New York Rangers Breaking News: Eminger Agrees To One-Year Deal
The New York Rangers announced they have signed defensemen Steve Eminger to a one-year contract. The deal is believed to pay Eminger $800,000.
The Rangers had talked about wanting to bring in a veteran defenseman to help out the younger guys, and with Eminger they get a guy who already knows the system. He obviously impressed John Tortorella enough last year to have the coach want him back in the fold, and he seems fine with playing a limited role.
Eminger appeared in 65 games with the Rangers last season. He tallied two goals and four assists. Although his points aren't spectacular, his aggressiveness and toughness is what the Rangers love the most. Eminger played a limited role last season, but could very well be on the third pairing if the young prospects do not pan out as expected.
Official press release after the jump.
RANGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH
DEFENSEMAN STEVE EMINGER
New York, July 25, 2011 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenseman Steve Eminger on a new contract.
Eminger, 27, skated in 65 games with the Rangers last season, registering two goals and four assists, along with 22 penalty minutes. He made his Rangers debut in the season opener on October 9 at Buffalo, and tallied his first point as a Blueshirt with an assist in the home opener on October 15 vs. Toronto. Eminger ranked third on the team with 101 blocked shots. The Rangers posted a record of 4-1-1 when he tallied a point. The eight-year NHL veteran recorded one assist and posted a plus-three rating while skating in his 400th career NHL game on March 4 at Ottawa. Eminger notched his first goal as a Ranger on November 24 at Tampa Bay and posted a season-high, plus-four rating in an 8-2 win vs. Edmonton on November 14.
The 6-2, 203-pounder has skated in 411 career games with the Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals, registering 17 goals and 74 assists for 91 points, along with 323 penalty minutes. Eminger posted a career-high, plus-five rating, tying Anaheim's franchise record for plus/minus rating in a single game, in a 5-2 win at Colorado on March 31, 2010. In 2008-09, Eminger established career-highs in games played (71), assists (21), points (26), power play goals (two) and shots on goal (85), and tied his career-high in goals (five) while splitting the season between Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and Florida. He tallied his first career NHL playoff point with a goal in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at Philadelphia on April 17, 2008. Eminger registered his first career NHL goal on October 10, 2005 vs. the Rangers. He made his NHL debut on October 11, 2002 vs. Nashville and recorded his first career point with an assist on October 10, 2002 at Toronto.
The Woodbridge, Ontario native was acquired by the Rangers from the Ducks in exchange for forwards Aaron Voros and Ryan Hillier on July 9, 2010. He was originally selected as Washington's first round choice, 12th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

MZA does
none of the other three have two-way contracts. I assume all of Wolski and Avery and EC would have to clear waivers to be sent down and brought back up.
They would, but it’s not necessarily being CT-bound that will allow the team to shed those deals.

True, but it has to happen first. Having Redden as an NHL contract makes the process tougher, as the Rangers will be approaching the 10% Cap overage for the summer.
The deals of Zuccarello, McDonagh, and Del Zotto only count a little more than half on the summer cap. Erixon’s deal doesn’t count as all.
Even with Redden, they should have ~2m more than what’s indicated on capgeek for flexibility.

Got it, learn new stuff all the time. Because they are two-way contract’s of previous NHL’ers, they count a little more than half and since Erixon hasn’t played an NHL game yet, he doesn’t count at all?
Right, their two-way deals only count the pro-rated portion, based on the number of days they spent on the NHL roster (which is 90-100 for all 3). Erixon, who spent no time on the NHL roster last year, counts zero.
There’s obviously some other guys (Kolarik, whoever else I can’t think of right now) that also count a portion, but it’s mostly negligible dollars.

3.8 to Sign Cally now. If its more than that, we’ll most likely see MZA start in Hartford, with potentially a cheaper Hagelin or Thomas taking his spot.

Its gotta be more than that, no? Do you think at this point, Callahan would take less than Dubinsky? If Im him, the contract better be >$4.2M
No, it doesn’t HAVE to be more than that. Cally’s a year older and has put up fewer points at every age thus far.
It’s a endless debate, but one can make a very good case that Callahan should make less than Dubi. (as one can make a good case he deserves more)

It’s obviously not a detractor.
He can argue for it being a boost, but until it’s actually announced, it’s a presumption that the Rangers could easily claim in arbitration is not a reality, should it come to that.

May not have worded that clearly. Meaning that ‘since we are giving you the honor of being Captain, you can take less money for the privilege.’ Not something I would agree with, but it was a possibility in my mind.
For your sake’s, gotta hope there is no actual hearing.
Oh, gotcha. Yeah, I guess they could ‘sell him the captaincy’ or something, but that’d be a bizarre tactic.
I figure this gets signed about 10am Thursday, just like Dubinsky’s. I don’t see a hearing coming, especially with Cally’s impending UFA status.

Even so, MZA makes 1.7 a year. We have 3.8 to sign Cally and keep everyone else.
If Cally signs for lets say 4.5, than we put MZA in Hartford and still have 1 mil to bring in another body.
Also, if Valentenko makes the team over MDZ, that saves another 200k. So we’ll be fine space wise.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. I have no doubt that things will work out Cap-wise, without having to ‘gut’ the lineup. But it could mean making a decision that is based on money versus being based on actual gameplay.
True. It shows me that buying out Wolski is completely unnecessary. Unless we plan on using that extra space, if you don’t use it you lose it.
A better scenario would be to send down Christensen, or Avery, or MZA (most likely MZA due to his two-way and 1.75 mil conract). For example, Thomas is making 1 mil, and Hagelin 800k.

We fine cap-wise sending MZA to Hartford
But that assumes he doesn’t earn a spot on one of the top 3 lines. If he does and we send him down anyway then we are hurting the team for salary purposes.
we will be fine no need to speculation. good or bad, slats knows a thing or to about the finances of the game and cba. he was always smart in getting the team together no matter how much money he thru at people. he does have a few tricks up his sleeve and will be glad to use them now that hes heading in the right direction for the team
Good to have him back. Price is right as well. Very good, indeed.

True.
If Eminger is here, that means essentially out of Erixon/MZA/Valentenko only two of them will make the team. I think we are forgetting about how well Valentenko played last year.
On the forward side, if Cally gets more than 3.8, than most likely we send MZA to the Whalepack and bring a kid up. But who?
Even if Cally makes 3.8 or less, do Thomas/Weise/Hagelin have a shot? If they plan great, Torts has to make a hard choice.

It doesn't make too much sense
It would seem to me like you let MZA do as much as he can while he’s with the team. I’d rather see them demote EC to make room for him (obviously a lot depends on MDZ and Callahan’s contract).
I like what I saw from MZA last year, and I really want to see more. I wouldn’t put too much faith into the link by the way (not Puck Central the actual link in his story), stuff like that leaks out all the time.

The thing is, even Cally gets more than 3.8, and we only demote Christensen, we most likely wont be able to bring anyone else up and we’ll be sitting with 22 players.
If we send MZA down, we have room to bring up another player and have 23.
Its just a choice Torts has to make. I’d like to see MZA get a shot though. Here’s to hoping Cally settles with 3.8

Hasn't been much time for hockey these last few days. But this article...
No quotes. Speculation. I love what the Rangers have done during the off-season. Even though the Blueshirts have become a much stronger unit, I still have a dream about Mats having a breakthrough on the RW this season.
I think the Cally-deal is going to require 4+ mill per year. If the capgeek numbers are correct, it means the little one needs to convince Torts – big time. I hope he’s up to it…

Don’t get me wrong, I think this was a very solid signing to add depth and experience to our back end, and at a very reasonable price at that, but I am slightly concerned that a guy who is all but 27 years old with slightly over 400 games played is considered our "veteran’ on the blue line. I would love to see the Rangers bring in a Beukeboom or a Zubov type guy in a coaching/mentoring role to help bridge that gap a bit more.

~Those Caps fans sure think they can make some noise.... too bad their team can't.
Brent Sople would have been my choice
but don’t count out the fact that Eminger knows the system, and impressed last year. Most vets aren’t willing to come back to a “you probably won’t play much more than 30 games this year” situation.
Plus, at the price, you’re not going to find a better deal.

I agree 100%. I’m more alluding to the fact that there is nobody on our back end who can say, “Been there, done that.” I think it’s a great fit at a great price and the guy clearly has the appropriate attitude to make this happen. I always said, if given a choice between Eminger and Gilroy, I take Eminger because he comes with an extra five years of experience. And by no means am I saying there was a better player out there, especially for the price, I’m just saying that even with this ‘veteran’ on the roster, we are still very, very young on the blue line.

I agree with you completely, but for me the important thing is he knows “the system.” You know how with a new boss/coach/teacher there’s always a bit of a learning curve where you need to figure out what they actually want? Eminger comes in knowing that already and has proven he’ll do whatever’s asked of him. Granted, someone with that “been there, done that” experience would be great, but in am imperfect world this works just great imho.

Two questions:
1) Does a 7th d man stick with the big club? Someone mentioned V-tank needs to go thru waivers, I would think he’d get the nod over MDZ.
Staal/Girardi
McD/Sauer
Erixon/Eminger. Valentenko
MDZ, Kundratek, Pashnin in CT
2) Anyone think Slats is looking to move the WW, MZA and ECs of the world to open cap space for a trade later on to get a top six forward (picks and prospects) ?
Say what you want about those three guys, they have some unique talents and show scoring ability in flashes. I can’t see shedding a WW unless you have something else lined up. MZAs salary makes him an easy target to move. EC has had many chances, but his skill set is pretty nice to have floating around as 13th forward.

Problem is EC right now is the 14th forward, not even 13th. There’s a log jam at forward, so yes, I expect one of those 3 to move. Not necessarily traded, but certainly off the opening roster. Christensen, given the center situation, is the most likely candidate, but Zuke’s is going to need to earn his spot because his 2-way deal allows the team the most flexibility.
I remain unconvinced that Wolski’s doing anything but taking the LW1 or LW2 spot to start the year.

not unless avery or feds play on the first line with richards and gabo…..your not splitting up the Pack line
True. But even so, than he’ll play on Stepan’s wing.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
I'm not sure why EC is necessarily behind MZA
Barring a move, or a sudden emergence from Thomas or Hagelin, Avery, EC and MZA are clearly the 12th, 13th and 14th forwards right now. But I am not sure in what order. And I expect that Avery will be on the opening day roster, even if not in the lineup. Which leaves EC or MZA to move (unless they shed Wolski’s salary). But I don’t know that it should be EC rather than MZA. Both have the same main strength – shootouts, and EC is bigger, more experienced and more versatile (e.g., if EC is in the lineup then either he or Boyle can serve as Stepan’s wing – or move Step to their wing – if Step hasn’t improved his faceoff performance). That said, MZA has the greater potential to take a big step up. But unless he does, I’m not sure he’s ahead of EC.
Be thankful for being a Ranger fan.
I came across this on Lighthouse, reading this fan post was a fascinating look into the mind of at least one Islander fan. Having grown up on Long Island and still having friends/family in the area, I can’t explain how deeply Islander fans hurt about what has become of their franchise…or how hopeful they are right now (whether the hope is grounded in reality or not is another story). As a fan of any team, the passion is great to see and makes me hope they don’t end up in KC or Hamilton down the road.
An Open Letter to the NHL Community from a Proud Islanders Fan

LHH Editor’s Note: It’s summer, baby. ’Tis the season for FanPosts like these.
Scapegoating (per Wikipedia): “Process in which the mechanisms of projection or displacement are utilized in focusing feelings of aggression, hostility, frustration, etc., upon another individual or group; the amount of blame being unwarranted.”
Dear Fellow NHL Enthusiast:
I’ve been an Islanders’ fan since the summer of 1983. In that time, I’ve endured a lot: loss of the Cup to Gretzky’s Oilers (after having missed the four straight championships); essentially the defection of such stars as Pat LaFontaine and Brent Sutter; the dismantling of the ’93 team, including trading Pierre Turgeon for a past-his-prime Kirk Muller (who wouldn’t even report); Fishsticks; Mike Milbury; not just bad ownerships, but a criminal one in John Spano; Mike Milbury; an arena that was a relic 15 years ago; the systematic trading-away of such talent as Roberto Luongo, Bryan McCabe, Todd Bertuzzi, Ollie Jokinen, the 2nd overall pick in 2001 (Jason Spezza), essentially the 1st overall pick in 2000 (DiPietro over Heatley and Gaborik), Tim Connolly, Norris Trophy winner Zdeno Chara, 48 goal scorer Ziggy Palffy; almost 20 years since our last playoff series victory; and Mike Milbury. That’s a lot for we fans to take. So, when you vilify our team, you should know that you’re preaching to the choir. You don’t know nearly as much of the hardship, as we do.
But there is something you probably don’t realize.
All of the nastiness, the utter disrespect, the lazy article writing, the scapegoating…the Isles franchise has experienced this before, back in the 70s, when we were a fledgling start-up existing in the shadow of Manhattan’s Original Six New York Rangers and their media machine. The New York Islanders were a terrible joke, but we began compiling talent. Lots of talent: Denis Potvin, Billy Smith, Bobby Nystrom, Clark Gillies, Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy, et al. But even that talent wasn’t enough to win one Stanley Cup, much less four in a row.
Any experienced hockey fan knows that talent, alone, does not win the Stanley Cup. There must be hardship. As evidenced by that championship Isles team, from the stars to the role players, guys must be not only willing, but eager, to spill blood for each other, to run through the proverbial wall, to win for the guy next to him, to be a family. Fat contracts don’t accomplish that. Neither does being the latest media darling. You know what helped to build the dynastic Islanders?
All of the nastiness, the utter disrespect, the lazy article writing, and the scapegoating.
Which brings me back to the current team. On February 11th 2011, in a game versus the Penguins, these Islanders finally had enough. The unwarranted disprespect wasn’t just from other hockey fans and writers, and it wasn’t just from the other teams. The refs and the “powers that be” were allowing other teams to take liberties with our beloved Islanders. It had become a mob rules field day, whereby players would run the likes of John Tavares with little or no consequence. Someone had to step up and, as with any tight team, the entire team stepped up. If it had been the Flyers, Bruins, or even the Lightning fighting back, it would have been viewed as what it was: old-time hockey where a group of young players stood up for itself and became a team. However, on cue, the greater hockey community chose not to see it that way for one simple reason: it was the scapegoat New York Islanders who had done it. Gasp!
When you, the hockey fan, write your childish comments like a good little lemming; and when you, the sports journalist, write your lazy, uninspiring, uninformed articles; know that you are playing your part to distinction. You are helping to shape this very young, very talented hockey club into a future champion. You are doing what was done a few decades ago, which is precisely what my team needs now to take the next step.
Because, you see, talent and competitiveness may be vital ingredients to a contending team, but when you add a generous helping of pissed off, you’re creating a Champion who is going to come into your building and hand your butt to you.
So, as a fan who genuinely loves the New York Islanders, thank you for that. Thank you so much. And keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
—A Patient Isles’ Fan

from the bottom of my heart
i want that shithole of a franchise to relocate anywhere
quebec
hamilton
kansas city
i want to hear the crying and sobbing of their remaining thirty four hardcore fans
i want anyone who has any affinity for that franchise agonizing and heartbroken in the streets
there are no words for how much of a dislike i have for fans of that franchise, and their enduring misery makes inexplicably happy
having dealt with the heartache first hand from 81-84 and the disaster that was april/may 1993, i want them to never again experience anything approaching joy, and i really, honestly wish nothing but misery on them forevermore

my bad….i don’t hate that franchise
i fucking despise it with every fiber of my being, in spite of being a perfectly rational human being who knows it’s a completely silly and irrational emotion to have….but nonetheless it’s there, it’s real, and in spite of them being a joke for the last twenty years my feelings haven’t changed
ken morrow’s shot through hanlon may as well have happened two days ago for me….i am psychologically scarred for life, and my friends all know it’s the only thing that will send me into a rage

who cares about the Isles or their fans?
Jeez, Gabby….you’re almost coming off like a fan of the Islanders by posting this…..who cares what their fans feel like? I hope there is nothing but continued failure in their future, they are a dismal franchise that deserves to be contracted. I lived through their run of Cups, it was a four-year blight on the sport of hockey as far as I was concerned…..and I don’t need to hear their whining now that their team has fallen to the level of one of the worst franchises in all of sports. Instead, let’s focus on the good things that are in the Rangers’ future, eh?
Screw the Isles. May they be moved out of Long Island soon.

Personally...
I am A Ranger fan, a Hockey fan, and then a NY fan in that order. The guy who wrote that article though was spot on with a lot of what he said. I actually like the Islanders team right now and the stockpile of talent they are amassing. If they were to build an arena and able to bring in some veteran presence, I think they have a good shot in a couple of years to be a serious contender.
I was saying to my friends over the weekend that by the time all of our current high end prospects are in the NHL, many of these high end Islander prospects will be also and will make for a hell of a rivalry. With Streit back healthy this year, Okposo, Tavares, Bailey , Strome, Kabanov, Nino they are building quite a club. And if they can get Nabokov to play there and actually give a shit, they have a very competitive team.
In any case, Good Article, but GO RANGERS! Can’t wait to see the opening night roster. The rest of the summer is going to draaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggg..
I don't think the opening day roster will be as interesting as in past years, barring injuries or any big trades
Top 2 goalies – set (Henrik, Biron)
Defensemen – 4 of 6 set (Staal, Girardi, McD, Sauer)
Forwards – 9 of 12 (Richards, Gabby, AA, Dubi, Cally, Step, Boyle, Prust, FedEx)
The other 2 defensemen will come from MDZ, Erixon, Eminger of ValTank (or if there is a big surprise, Kundratek may have a slim outside shot)
The other 3 forwards will come from among Wolski, Avery, MZA, EC and Rupp (with Rupp pretty secure), unless Thomas or Hagelin really make a huge splash. The latter two are the only really interesting potential wild cards in the picture.
