New York Rangers Analysis: More On The Ryan Callahan Contract
As reported on Blueshirt Banter earlier, the New York Rangers have agreed to a three-year deal with restricted free agent Ryan Callahan. The contract is worth a reported $12.875 million for a $4.26 million cap hit.
Many of you have been wondering why the Rangers didn't offer a longer deal. Callahan told Andrew Gross the two sides talked about a longer deal, but decided to go for less years.
"We were both working out three, four and five year deals and I think we agreed the numbers worked for a three-year deal," Callahan told The Record. "We couldn't come to a conclusion on a longer deal.
This actually makes a lot of sense for the Rangers, even though at first glance it seems strange that Glen Sather wouldn't have been willing to give the potential captain of the team more than three years. The long and short of the situation however, is that more years would have meant more money and a bigger cap hit.
Let me explain after the jump.
Currently, Callahan's three-year deal covers one restricted free agency season, and two unrestricted free agency seasons. We discussed earlier how the open market would significantly inflate Callahan's worth, thus increasing the amount of a new contract. Callahan and his agent know this.
So while a $4.26 million deal is reasonable for two unrestricted free agency seasons, that number would have to be much higher if the Rangers wanted to buy out a third or fourth UFA year. Especially since in four years Callahan will be 30-years-old, something which could potentially decrease offers.
So the price Callahan's camp set for a four or five year deal was probably very high. And since Sather didn't have enough time to negotiate those terms, he put his name on a three-year deal. A deal which is fair for both sides in my opinion.
Callahan also talked about how excited he was to be back in Rangers' blue for the next three years.
"(But) I'm thrilled to be back for three years," Callahan added. "I love playing for the Rangers. I'm excited to be back and to have this behind me and concentrate on the season. I was hoping it would get done but you never really know how it's going to go in these negotiations. I definitely didn't want to go to arbitration and only go on a one-year deal. I'm really happy it didn't have to come to that."
It's good to see the Rangers complete every step of their off-season plan. Sather has done a fantastic job this off season of building a competitive team next year, and locking up the key RFA's the team had to deal with. Especially since there were so many rumors to why the Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky deals wouldn't happen.
In the end, the Rangers now have their core together for another two years (if you count Mike Sauer, Artem Anisimov and Derek Stepan part of the core), and have their main guys locked up for three or more years.
More analysis on the deal later. For now? Thoughts on all this?

Hey, Joe...
it’s been a great offseason! Glen Sather has another move in him to create cap space, but he has done one outstanding job! Great to have Captain Cally back in the fold!

Where's the other shoe?
SIgned Dubinsky Callihan, Richards, Anisimov, Boyle, …….
Drury got bought out.
Where did my team go wrong?

Lets not act like this puts us over the top.
We basically added Brad Richards and Mike Rupp to a team desperately in need of scoring. The team needs Richards to be Richards and hope that the majority of players improve off career years (Anisimov, Dubi, Cally, Boyle, Prust) and none of the rookies who exceeded expectations regress (Stepan, Sauer, McD).
I love this team and share the optimism, but let’s not blow ourselves before Labor Day.

—Rookies who exceeded expectations not to regress. Plus WW is getting top six minutes, not exactly the 85 Oilers.

Well when you think about the fact that with BR in our lineup he has a solid chance of adding around 25 more goals over the course of the season than if he weren’t in the lineup. With that extra 25 goals we would be 5th in GPG
by Zuppa Di Pesce on Jul 27, 2011 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Professor George would say 25 is a bit too much. Agree he will be a boost, if Gabby rebounds 25 maybe.
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jul 27, 2011 7:22 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Well, thats the catch I think
Richards may add the 25 he scores, but I think his biggest impact is not his goal-scoring but playmaking and how he can help others (as we all stare at Gabby) find the back of the net.
Richards adds so much
We essentially replaced Drury with Richards. If he, Cally and Dubi score 25, Gabby gets 35, AA, WW, and Step gets 20, I think we look pretty good. Boyle probably gets just under 15 than just over 20. Prust probably gets less then last years too. I am really excited for this year. If I hear Sam say “its a powerplay goal”, atleast 5 times a week I will be happy

’It’s a PP goal’, 5 times per week, for the entirety of the season, would surely set every PP record that exists. It also means you’re seriously underestimating everyone’s goal scoring.
Unless you mean you’re going to watch every game live and in each replay, in which case that’s ok.

Yeah come on guys, I watch Rangers in 60 five times a week therefore if we score one pp goal a week then there you go. Nah, lol if every 7 games we score 4 probably is more realistic. But, and this is a huge but, if we do get 5 a week i want all the accolades, a t-shirt and a Calliskimov jersey.
by louielounz1 on Jul 28, 2011 12:17 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Heh…4 every 7 games works out to about 47PP goals. Last year, we scored 49.
We didn’t have 5 in a week though. We did have 5 in 8 days once or twice last year.

we can't stare at him..
‘cause he’ll just whiz right by like a big awesome blue blurr.
Very excited for this season
Nah, 25’s ok. He might not hit it, but I think that should be the expectation from him.

If I could blow myself I’d never leave the house
That said- we need Gabby boy to rebound. Otherwise- tough defensive oriented team that added scoring punch- looks damn fine.

On paper, this could be a 100 point team, maybe a 4th seed.
Some peoples posts read like they want Sather to put on a flight suit and declare Mission Accomplished.
I’m pleased about most everything this offseason, but I think you need to be realist.
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jul 27, 2011 7:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Agreed
I think the Rangers have certainly improved themselves with BRichards but they still need more scoring form Gabby, Wolski (if he stays) , Anisimov and Stepan. I dont expect a whole lot more from Dubi, Callahan.
I wouldnt be surprised if ol’ Slats puts together a trade that nets us a true 30 goal scorer. Maybe package up a couple of top prospects, Wolski’s contract and a MZA/ Christensen. If you can get that you ’re pretty there.
Looking forward to the season.

If its MZA and Wolski, with a prospect, that opens up 5.55 mil. Thats enough for a real solid player, and potentially enough to also bring up another guy (Hagelin/Weise/Thomas etc)

Any ideas on who might be a possibility? Good discussion for late July…..

PARISE! :)
Seriously though.. I would absolutely kill to get Lucic. It would take a lot though.
Talk about fitting the team perfectly?
A top 6 of Richards, Gabs, Lucic, Dubi, Cally, AA is best in the league. Boyle, Rupp, Prust kicking ass on the 4th and a rotation of ski//grit wingets for Step on the 3rd.

Sharp, Clowe, Kulemin as realistic possibilities though.

I don’t think San Jose lets Clowe walk. He fills a niche that no one else seems to be able to on that team. Plus, he’s not an UFA until 2013.
And fool that Burke was, he wouldn’t even trade Kulemin for Richards or Carter.
And fool that Burke was, he wouldn’t even trade Kulemin for Richards or Carter.
A bit more complicated than that as they wanted Kulemin & Kadri for Carter or Kulemin, Kadri and a 1st for Richards…. although I still think he should have done it.
Hard to compete with a B. Schenn + Simmonds + 2nd offer though.
Crazy would be NOT overanalyzing everything.

Well that’s what I’m saying… the Kings were willing to give up Schenn and Simmonds, but Burke wasn’t willing to throw in Kulemin with Kadri (assuming he was the main piece in the deal, like Schenn)?
For neither of these elite first line centers that he desperately needed for the team? That just seems silly to me.
Burke wanted to think about it and Holmgren called LA and never called the Leafs back after he heard LA’s offer…. not that I would either if I was Philly. LA’s package was better than the Leafs could offer.
Crazy would be NOT overanalyzing everything.

in my perfect world sather takes mza, wolski, weise, thomas(or valetenko, etc) and two first rounders to get vanek from buffalo. we would get a 1st line left winger with a big buddy, who does the dirty work for br and gabby and who would improve our PP immediatley. but i guess it’s just a dream of an austrian rangers fan
that's kind of a steep price to pay for vanek

An expensive top line too…. That’s like $20M (or ~1/3rd of the cap) in 3 players for a 23 man roster. Add in Lundqvist and that’s like $26M in 4 players.
Crazy would be NOT overanalyzing everything.

only thing i don't like this offseason is rupp
seems like a pointless signing…we have grit already, we have cup-tested leadership, we already had 14 other forwards.
if we really wanted rupp, there was no reason to sign fedotenko later…
just adding another skater who might be a healthy scratch more often than not.
i really don’t get it.
love the other moves though, as long as richards retires before his contract is up

I don’t think it was a pointless signing.. I just think that he’s getting paid a bit too much though.
He’ll be a great fit on a line with Boyle and Prust.. No one wants to play against them.

why sign fedotenko though? it’s the same slot. i’d rather have someone who can skate rather than someone who fights. prust and boyle can both skate and i don’t think rupp will be able to keep up with them.

FedEx is the signing I don't understand
It messed up any cap flexibility for this year, and he really isn’t significantly better than the players who will be sitting to make room for him – either Avery, EC or MZA.
I like the guy but agreed…
by Ranger McJersey on Jul 27, 2011 8:58 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Offensively Fedotenko is not those players, that’s true, but you can’t just have Boyle-Prust playing defense in the bottom 6.
Now, if Hagelin’s more ready than expected, then maybe Feds is a waste, but I think he made a lot more sense than Rupp.

Rupp
Will be scratched when we play a team like the Red Wings, Feds will be a scratch when we play a Philly like team. EC is what seems to be like the strange spare part. I guess he is a nice insertion if someone gets hurt but you never know, a team looking for talent on the cheap might give up a 5th rounder for him during the season.

Richards retiring
If he doesnt retire, we would buy out the remainder of his contract with like a 300k cap hit. wouldnt be an issue
Yeah, it’s not close to a 300k cap hit. If he were to get bought out on the last 3 years, his cap hit is $6m for those 1st 3 years. The 300k is what the penalty would be for the 3 years after that.

I think 3 years is perfect for Cally because, IMO, I feel that if he doesn’t change the way he plays by flinging himself at every opponent on the ice at his size then the injury factor will come into play. Going 4 or 5 years would have been a big risk as opposed to Dubi who is better built for playing a gritty game.
Torts likes Feds
I honestly think that’s why he was brought on in the first place, and it’s the only reason i can come up with as to why he was resigned. He recorded the lowest point total of his entire career last season with 25. The only positive i can see on his sheet is he was a +9.
Wasnt he hurt?
Wasnt Feds hurt a good prtion of last year- thus his low point total? The guy played tough, good 2 way hockey when he was on the ice. You cant discount a guy who gives 100% every night and plays well both ways. He may not be Ovy but then again who is?

Even though he plays the Pens really tough, I am glad he was signed in New York. He plays hard every shift, He fits.
Good luck this year and I hope he gets the C.
