2011 NHL Free Agency: Day 3 Open Thread

Brad RIchards is with the team, Matt Gilroy and Justin Soryal are no longer.  Thus is the summary of free agency transactions to the New York Rangers roster yesterday.  For Glen Sather, this has not been the most active period, but certainly one of the more productive in his tenure.

Other notable moves around the NHL yesterday:

Tomas Vokoun - Signs with the Washington Capitals for 1 year, $1.5m.

Ian White - Signs with the Detroit Red Wings for 2 years, $5.75m

Simon Gagne - SIgns with the Los Angeles Kings for 2 years, $7m

and

Tim Connolly - Signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2 years, $9.5m

Consider this your open thread for today's events.  As usual, any breaking news will be covered right here on the Banter.

Good morning :D Hope today isn’t as slow as yesterday for news… with the holiday though, might see nothing until Tuesday… we need them RFAs signed!

Sather said he would be working on the RFA’s this coming week. They are RFA’s, I doubt any other clubs send out offer sheets.

The Rangers have “hand” which is very nice :)

Canucks interested in Dubinsky and Callahan?

I’ve noticed a few fan sites talking about Vancouver taking a run at Dubi or Cally to play with Kessler. Haven’t seen this on any news sites or creditable sites.. Anything we should be seriously concerned about?

leaving his feet was a result of the hit, not jumping into the guy with his knees pointed like the faggot Russians did in the 1980 games. Thats a model for a clean hit. Richards Buyout

I may be looking really really far down the road here, but what would the cap hit be for buying out Richards before the 7th year (the first year of $1 MIL salary)? Is it still tied to the salary cap number or his actual salary?

I’m hoping that Vokoun looks a lot like Theodore for the caps this year, and gets to be our bitch in the playoffs.

by Berthe on Jul 3, 2011 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

First off. That second paragraph. Awesome.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think its tied to the actual salary because Drury is costing ~3.3 this year and then something like 1.6 mill, which are lower than half his cap hit.

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Jul 3, 2011 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

It is tied to his actual salary but not in the way you think. I believe you are subtracting the savings of actual money from the original cap hit amount. If you plug it into CapGeek, you see that if you buyout the last 3 years of the contract, the cap hit is $6m even for the 3 years and $333k for the extra 3 years. Not ideal. Better he retire with $57m in his pocket leaving $3m on the table.

Next CBA

Is this type of contract going to be something that is brought up in the next CBA? The ability to front load contracts to reduce the cap hit and then buy out the players when they are paid next to nothing. This sort of looks like a win-win for the players and management.

The more I think about it the more I like the contract.

by Berthe on Jul 3, 2011 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely. There is no way the NHL is gonna keeping letting itself get slapped in the face because of these contract loopholes. I can see them caping contract lengths, or forcing much more even distribution. All of these 7-12 year contracts are getting excessive

Nashville’s GM hitting the sauce early on a Sunday

Here’s an interesting one: Preds acquire Brett Lebda and Robert Slaney from the Leafs for Cody Franson and Matthew Lombardi.

@mirtle James Mirtle
That deal includes a conditional pick: If Lombardi plays 60 games, Preds get a fourth-rounder in 2013. If he doesn’t, Leafs get one.

George: you forgot Michael Rupp ???

That is a good, smart signing by Sather. A tough guy who teammates love with some skill and versatility up front.

I’m very happy with the Brad Richards signing. It gives us short term legitimacy and won’t cripple us long-term. Think back to last season and all those games where Henrik put up gems but we couldn’t score just one or two more goals to put us over the hump. I think Richards’ signing combined with across the board improvements of all our young core will go a long way toward helping the scoring. Wouldn’t it be nice to cruise into the playoffs instead of scratching and clawing into them?

Our team post-July 1st seems much better constituted to make that happen.

Next?

From what I’ve been reading, the Rangers will have close to 3 million to spend after re-signing the restricted free agents. If that’s the case, who are some viable defensemen that are still out there?

As for the lines, I’m envisioning:

Anisimov- Richards- Gaborik
Dubinsky- Stepan- Callahan
Wolski/ Avery- Christensen- Fedotenko
Rupp- Boyle- Prust

i dont think if he’s ever played alongside a center quite like BR…maybe that give him some incentive to work hard and get up to the first line where he can really do well….as long as gives the effort.

A little optimistic, yeah, maybe, but not by much. Only 8.33 more goals each. I think they will come real close. Dont be surprised.

Not sure how that happens, we have $8m+ freeing up this time next year… that was going to be my next post, below! As good as we can be this coming year, the one after may very well be our first “contender” year. We have Wolski, Avery, Christensen, and the next step down of Drury coming off the books totaling $8.66m, without many people needing significant raises (assume we sign Feds, MZA, MDZ, and Prust for same/moderate raises, or even some gone).

THAT excites me.

by BigB22 on Jul 3, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Can people stop breaking up the pack line?

This is absurd. Our ‘2nd line’ hands down is Dubi – Anis – Cally. No question in my mind. This unit cycles the puck, plays great in our own zone, scores goals, and forces teams to figure out who to send out their top defensive pairing against. You also say center acquired by trade, but any trade at this point would likely include Boyle. Also, I don’t want to break up Boyle and Prust. It will be interesting to see how Torts slots everything, but knowing Torts, no line combinations are permanent. And I also agree that Thomas makes the team, but I’d like to see him on a line with MZA and Stepan; I’d think their skill sets would collectively mesh. If I was slotting our lines, I’d roll them out like this:

Wolski/ Richards/ Gabby
Dubi/ Anis/ Cally
MZA/ Stepan/ Thomas
Prust/ Hagelin/ Boyle

I think EC and Avery are out of the equation, and Rupp and Fedotenko are our extra forwards.

by callahanisgod on Jul 3, 2011 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Imo the Pack line is our co-first line. They’re all gifted players, with the potential of being so much more, but even so their synergy is greater than just the sum of their parts.

I want to keep the Feds-Boyle-Prust line intact as well. We’ll see what happens, but they were really fun to watch at times.

by icespree on Jul 3, 2011 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely.
Boyle is defensively responsible – to the point of being a significant part of the PK last year (usually 2nd unit).
Rupp has never been known as particularly defensive – and his skating can’t compare to Boyle’s.
For that reason alone, Rupp will play wing. He may take quite a few faceoffs, but he’ll rotate out to wing after the F.O.

I don’t think they’re nearly as good. Take away Carter and Richards, and teams can really focus on Giroux and JVR. There’s less offensive depth there. Sure, Schenn is gonna be great, but he’s not gonna be tearing it up next season. He still has to develop. Voracek is a crap shoot. Simmonds is a solid 3rd liner. There D is getting older. I don’t think they’ll be nearly as good next season.

I think the 2011-2012 Flyers...

…might be the biggest wild card of any NHL team in the past decade. Still tons of talent, but so many changes and so many risks. And as much as I hate them, the Flyers do a good job of rebuilding while still trying to win.

My answer is the Flyers are a probable definite to maybe be possibly better, or worse. One thing I can guarantee is they may or may not finish above or below the 5th seed.

Also, Jaromir Jagr will score between 17 and 36 goals, and definitely not more than 72.

The Caps win the offseason with their latest move, I think.

Varlamov was on his way to Russia, and Vokoun was about to sign a big contract with the Avs. The Caps traded Varlamov to the Avs for a 1st round pick (potentially lottery) and a 2nd round pick as well, essentially taking out the competition.

After that, the Caps need a goalie, and who better than Vokoun. With no competition to bid against, they were able to sign an elite goalie for dirt cheap.

The teams going to be a powerhouse next year.

Caps signing was GREAT!

But, I’m still torn as to whether or not it is going to make them that much better this season. They didn’t exactly have goalie issues in D.C., whether is was Varly, Holtby, or Neuvirth in net, they all played pretty well. I still think their D is suspect, even with the Hamrlik signing.

If the Pens stay healthy this year, they ARE strong with Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kovalev, Staal, etc.

Green has had injury issues the last few years, but continues to improve his “defense” every year it seems. Schultz was absolutely horrendous last year. Alzner is solid. I think he’s a smarter player than Carlson. I kinda forgot about Wideman since he got hurt towards the end of the season.

Regardless, imo, their defense is their weakest part on paper…..still solid all around tho.

Too bad Arnott is a FA, he was a beast when he went to D.C. last year. I thought they would give him a 1 year deal of some sort, maybe still can, but probably highly unlikely, especially with bringing in Halpern.

nah, I’m ok with it in general but Preds too low. One of the best young teams in the league with Rinne as one of the best goalies right now and Weber as a top 5 player in the league.

I’m thinking the players they messed up on become FA and they can’t retain them all. That could really hurt them. If not, move them up.

Think you’re underestimating Devils and Flyers by quite a bit. I also think you’re overestimating Detroit and Anaheim and Dallas, vastly underrating St. Louis, Nashville, Phoenix, Calgary (especially), Colorado.

I don’t. As it is, they’ll get their best player back (the 2nd best wing in the game, I’d say), and I doubt they’ll shoot 5% for half the season again. They’ll be able to get league average goaltending or better from Brodeur or whoever will be there.

Regarding Nashville: who did they lose, exactly? Ward—they have a plethora of two-way forwards, losing him shouldn’t hurt them as much as it might another team. Lombardi—was hurt a lot. Franson—Ellis may already be better. I think they’ll be just as good this season as they were last (add a few goals against with Rinne’s regression, doubt he’s really this good, but add a few goals for with a better PP).

My, has Heatley's value dropped.

Although San Jose stole him from Ottawa in the first place.

Heatley is a two-time 50 goal-scorer and had one down year. He must really be annoying. Maybe he smacks his lips when he eats or something.

Doesn’t Heater play right wing? I guess he’s pretty interchangeable on the wing.

by suddendeath on Jul 4, 2011 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont get this trade.. Heatly produces a ton of offense.

He has some of the sickest finishing skills I’ve ever seen. Just looked up his stats and he’s a point per game player that averages close to 40 goals a season. He’s coming of a 26 goal campaign but I don’t think he’s in decline.

Is the “locker room” issue related to his accident in Atlanta or something else?

Good trade for MIN. SJS must have something else cooking.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jul 4, 2011 10:07 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Heatley is an annual stiff in the playoffs, that’s why he was traded. Great trade for the Sharks (for the playoffs) and the Wild as they need to put fans in the stands.

I don’t think Heatley’s attitude and Torts’ attitude would really mesh more as clash and explode in violent mess of hockey equipment and gore

you can tell the rangers are looking at players’ attitudes just as much as skill. So far the rangers have been adding/keeping players with good character. We are going to love next year’s team. I hear Heatly is a major P.O.S
