NHL News: Nassau Referendum Vote Not Looking Good for Islanders
When discussing the polling so far in today's referendum vote that will potentially spell out the future of the New York Islanders, a voting representative said the turnout has been "abysmally low". This is what the Islanders wanted, hence the reason they had the vote held on August 1 as opposed to election day. But all updates that have been released to the public so far have not been in favor of the Isles, or hockey in general for that matter.
According to Chris Botta, less than 10-percent of Nassau County's registered voters will actually hit the polls today to cast their vote. In the towns of Garden City and Mineola (both with a large population), a combined 110 people have casted votes so far. 110! More people have visited this site in the past hour.
Newsday reporter Randi Marshal says the vote in New Hyde Park has seen "No's" outnumber "Yes's" by a 3:1 ratio. As for all of Nassau County, it is believed that among the low turnout, there have been more No's than Yes's to this point, but of course those numbers are unofficial at this time.
Obviously the increase in taxes is a major factor here, but many people also do not trust the project and more importantly, don't trust owner Charles Wang. This may be a result of Wang's continuous campaigning towards Isles fans - who would have voted yes without his support - instead of reaching out to the common public who are not interested in hockey.
Polls are open until 9 p.m. this evening so there is still time for things to change. But for now, today's referendum vote does not seem to be in favor of the New York Islanders/Nassau Coliseum and their future on Long Island.

Those old people will be the ones who sink the Isles. And so far it appears many of them have gone out to vote, and it goes without saying that they are voting no.

Yeah, but it’s also not surprising that the vote is leaning no during the day, the old people are the ones home with nothing better to do.
I’d expect the younger people to make a surge of yes votes happen in the evening, but I don’t think it will be enough.

It depends. Either they vote yes and are of the mind that they want to keep the jobs at the coliseum and/or the islanders or they will vote no for the increased taxes and lack of a contract.
Just because they are working doesn’t mean they are Islander fans or they think the potential deal is worth the automatic increased taxes.

Did anyone read Brooks’ article about this? Apparently the Nets owner wants a hockey team in the new Nets’ arena, Brooklyn Islanders?
Is that near Quebec City?

Jim do really think the NHL is going to let the Islanders move? Regardless of what Wang says he is threatening something he may not be able to do.

Leetch, not to start an old argument, but I’ve still yet to get an explanation on why a team that is always near the bottom in attendance is worth saving, when teams that draw better than them (and not in hockey hotbeds) are part of every relocation scenario.
If you love the team that much, and you want to save it, you go to the polls in droves. That doesn’t seem to be happening.

That’s not to say Long Island is a hockey hotbed, but I would certainly put it above Phoenix, Atlanta (now Winnipeg) and Nashville in terms of being a hockey-friendly area

Agreed. I’m for letting them go, but Bettman may want to save it similar to Coyotes.
My question is will the NHL let them move anyway. I think under the right leadership, similar to the Buffalo revival, the Islanders could be a contender, but not under Wang, He’s a business man not a hockey fan.

I heard that arena couldn’t house a hockey rink. Is that not the case?

I had been under the mistaken impression that the arena rising in Brooklyn would not have ice-making capacity. I was corrected this week by an arena/Nets representative who informed me that Barclay’s, which is scheduled to open in time for the 2012-13 NBA season, is being constructed to accommodate an NHL-sized rink.
It stands to reason that Prokhorov would be interested in acquiring a hockey team that would account for 44-60 dates a season to fill the arena if Wang puts the Islanders on the market.

From Brook’s article
Couple Of Questions...
1} Would this mean the end of the Islanders this year or next?
2} What happens to all those players next year?
3} Do thhey relocate them or do they just close shop and eeveryone is up for grabs?
4} Since we have a large open number of cap space next year and some of these kids are actually good, is it likely we see some hit our team next year?
5} Does anyone actually think thhat this is actually gonna pass as the day progresses….the weather is getting pretty gross out, would that stop you from going out in it and saving the New York Islanders…?

1. Neither, the lease at the Coliseum ends in 2015 I believe.
2. See Number 1
3. Relocation or a possible move to Brooklyn
4. See number 1.
5. To me, if the projections of 10% or less voter turnout are correct, its a major sign of indifference. But that’s just me.

Islander fans at work... your hilarious.
We all know they live in their parents basements masturbating to grainy VHS tapes of the teams glory years. Maybe they take a minute to download some Iron Maiden or Def Leopard or play some Dungeons and Dragons, but I’m convinced a good portion of the day is spent in some combination of being shirtless or pantless..with classless being a perpetual state of being.

I love how there are more Rangers fans/ personnel than Islanders pushing the vote campaign to get them a new arena when nobody is going to fill it… they are a crumbling franchise and it has nothing to do with the players, they get no fan support.
That team needs out of the area in order to survive, if they move to brooklyn they will get over fill from fans of hockey who can’t get into Rangers games…

From an organizational standpoint, the Islanders are broken.
Their impossible-to-get-to arena blows and no one players want to play there. Honestly, I tip my cap to any die-hard Islanders fans because rooting for that team must be pure fucking hell.
From a Rangers perspective, we have plenty of major rivalries with Pitt, Philly and NJ and somewhat lesser rivalries with Boston, Montreal, etc. I wouldn’t mind the Isles disappearing off the face of the earth or relocated to a city where people will appreciate a hockey club.

While I do agree mostly......
It is really sad that this is happening. Years of mismanagement, failure to spend to put an attractive team on the ice, Milbury trading off anyone and everyone of value…..see Chara, Louongo and about 20 other guys. If they lose this and it comes down to knowing the team is moving when the lease is up, I’d hate to be a player on that team having to play there until that point…..essentially you know the fans and county really don’t care about you. Thats motivation! The Rangers/Isles rivalry died when we swept them in 1994. There have been a few good games…but gone are the monsters with the bench clearing brawls….where I knew every player on both teams……I just don’t care about the Islanders because they opitimize everything that is low budget. Its like a revolving door of temporary workers each game….you never really know their names……oh where’s mustache guy? Did you see olive loaf guy today? Sweaty armpit guy get back yet? As an NYR fan who came of age in the early 80s, there is no team I despise more than the Iholes, and I would be sad to see that rivalry go.
But as a rational human being, I feel no sadness when people finally take action that stops allowing government support sports teams. The proposed or expected benefits almost never work out as projected or promised, and, generally, the taxpayer loses. There are many studies which show this. So I don’t share the hatred many of you guys do for the Islanders. I guess I can understand however, because the hatred is probably similar to my hatred of the Penguins.
if that city lost their team I wouldn’t feel pity in the slightest. I would laugh at every single bandwagon fan.
With the Islanders though, at least for me, its different. I don’t feel that hatred for them, for whatever reason. I enjoy the rivalry, and I think the team has a bright future. My opinion might be different if they were a great team and rubbed it in, but in my lifetime that hasn’t happened.
For that reason I don’t want them to leave. Now, maybe they would do better in a place other than Nassau? Thats a possibility as well. I still feel pity for the fans however, the same pity I felt for the Thrasher fans in Atlanta who lost their team. No man (or woman) should have to lose the team they love.
Plus, if they leave, Boston or Washington might get pushed into our division, and that would suck.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
You can almost lock up that it would be Washington. Crosby/Ovechkin 6x a year?

ugh.. Next they’ll replace NJ with Carolina, giving us 18 games a year of Staal vs Staal in the Atlantic division..

no wonder you don’t have the hatred, you were only two the last time they hooked up in the playoffs, and you (fortunately) missed the early 80s

True. I do understand why you feel the way you do though, and I don’t blame you at all.
