Why the Richards Signing Was A Bad One

As we know the last few off seasons Glenn Sather has made awful free-agent signings. Drury, Redden, Gomez etc. In my opinion, a few seasons from now one will be adding Brad Richards to that list. Being only 15 years old, I've never seen the Rangers as true contenders, and i've never really seen a big free-agent name work out for the Rangers. To me this signing will handicap the Rangers down the road. I do believe it will cause them to lose a guy like Sauer, Anisimov, or Brandon Prust. The contract says 9 years worth $60 mil. But the first 6 years is worth $57 mil. Basically we signed him to that contract with essentially a few free years at the end of his career. I'd much rather see the Rangers offer contract like that to a guy like Zach Parise, a possible free-agent next season. Richards is also coming off a concussion. That's always tricky to deal with. On the positive side of things he should be very good still for the next 2-3 seasons and hopefully he will ignite Gabby. If we get Gabby to score 40 again, and get the same kind of scoring support like last year, we should be very good. You guys might think I'm crazy but it just doesn't seem that great to me. Thoughts?

Concussions

Stepan got one in college that was really bad but nobody is worried about him. Concussions are serious but there are too many misconceptions about them.

Also we aren’t going to lose those guys because look at the cost cutting that will occur after this year with feds, wolski, avery, and christensen gone. There will be 8,062,000 dollars off the books. Plenty of space. And then when we get closer to when callahan anisimov and dubi need to be re-signed, girardi will be traded, Rupp will be gone, and Boyle might become too expensive for what he’s producing by that point.

Papa Sather always manages to work things out.

Yeah I'm hopeful for Richards and Gaborik to work out... I mean how many FA signings does it take to hit the jackpot?

Yes that's Richards hoisting the cup in the picture. I'm hoping 9 years from now I won't have to photoshop that picture.

Also, the ESPN article about the Rangers’ cup window being open kinda makes me focus more on the now then the later… at least for the time being. But as Rich2Gabs pointed out, the Illusionist Sather has proven he can make things disappear

Not to mention a $2m stepdown on Drury’s contract, and a decision to be made about bringing MZA back or allowing a (cheaper) rookie to step in.

People need to realize that having a prior concussion doesn’t make a player more likely to suffer another one. Players get labeled as “concussion guys” when it’s not really fair. Cases like Stepan getting one then fully recovering are much more the norm than someone like Crosby or Marc Savard.

by jm187l on Aug 18, 2011 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

What? My understanding is that a prior concussion does do that, it’s just that some players are more prone than others and each body reacts differently.

Maybe you can have qualms with the numbers of the contract but as a player BR fills a need and not in just a one year band aid kind of way so no I think it was a good signing.

See the thing is, the Rangers never truly had a number one center. It was always bounced around between 2-3 guys. Sure it’s a long deal, but it’s a spot that is filled with elite talent. Something the Rangers have been missing there for a long time.

As others have said, there is no way his contracts affects Sauer, Anisimov or Prust. We’ll have plenty of room to breathe next year again. Christensen is gone, Feds is most likely done. So in the end, it all works out..

Rangers never truly had a number one center

Dont forget they also dont have a powerplay quarterback, which Richards clearly is also a specialist at. Aslo this is essentially a 6 year contract and the Rangers will surely buy it out in the lasst 3 years where the buyout would be cheap and save us essentially the majority of his contract(Unless Richars is still playing amazing hockey at 37+

Why go that far back? Messier was obviously a #1. Say what you want about him, but Lindros was as well.

I would say the Rangers surely will NOT buyout the last 3 years, that’s a $6m/yr cap hit and almost nothing saved to have someone not play. More liekly that Richards leaves $3m on the table and retires for the last 3 years.

BR: #1 center, PP point man, makes everyone else better playing along side him, allows everyone else on the roster to play on lines they are more suited for, leadership, brings in much needed elite talent, and MAKES THEM A CONTENDER.

COME ON... REALLY?

We’ve been whining for years to get a true 1st line center + quarterback. We got both with Richards We’ve been talking all year how much we wanted Richards. Now we got him and now we suddenly think he was a bad signing? REALLY? COME ON!!!!!

by SweNYRfan on Aug 17, 2011 6:56 AM EDT reply actions

The talk wasnt unanimous about Richards.

I am personally undecided we will see how he plays out. He should be better the Gomez and Drury but he is not Messier and wont be the same kind of savior.

Tank god we have those last three years as a buyout window/ trade to a team looking for the cap floor, if Richards doesnt pan out.

The thing that bothers me is the no movement clause I really do hate when Sather gives those out to guys with long contracts really ties your hands up because Brad Richards for under 7mil cap hit could find a home somewhere else in the league if he isnt working out here but now he would have to waive nmc to do that.

by Pballer505 on Aug 17, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

hah...

he should be better than both Gomez and Drury combined….otherwise BUST!@#!!!!!

In Prust we Trust

we need to get cam newton before the panther’s get off lock down cause eli cant (QB) by hisselfall this saeson also we need plax back to cause smith is the best (WR) we got nd plax cant help smith nd the team out….. do that nd we have a a shout at the superblow

by Master Ov Brutality on Aug 18, 2011 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

You do realize you couldn’t sign Richards without the NMC right? That wasn’t even a question. But he should have had a NMC for the next 6 years and then a NTC the last 3 years. Doesn’t handcuff the team as much, but it is what it is.

Yeah I'm hopeful for Richards and Gaborik to work out... I mean how many FA signings does it take to hit the jackpot?

by mgweissman on Aug 17, 2011 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Disagree with this...

I don’t know how well BR will turn out, but the potential and upside is great. He could be the playmaking center that Gabby needs, he could be our PP QB, and he could be the 1C for the next few years, pretty much what everyone else has said.

Well, I guess this is the real question: if the Rangers won even just ONE Stanley Cup in the next 3 seasons, and then got a couple of mediocre seasons out of BR, followed by his last 3 seasons where we are totally burdened by a bad contract, would it be WORTH IT? I think most of us would say YES!

I share Stepan21’s tentativeness about the Richards signing. Only time will tell if this is another Drury-like signing. I do want to make a couple of optimistic/realistic points though.

1. It is rare for guys like Richards to be on the free agent market and you can expect to pay far out the ass for them (and I’m glad they didn’t rent him like McCabe before the end of last season).
2. I know the money and length of his contract are than a lot more than some fans are comfortable with, but I would much rather have a front-loaded contract than an even-distribution one or a back-loaded one (Makes sense to pay him most for what will probably be his best years).
3. The Richards signing did address a Ranger’s need. We needed a bona fide #1 Center and we got one. Whomever you put one the 1st line with Richards and Gaborik, for the 1st time in a long time, you can actually say we have something that looks like a 1st line. Richards is an offensive engine and has played with Torts before on a championship team. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that for the 1st time in forever, the Rangers will actually have a good power play with Richards at the helm.

by NYRBlue on Aug 17, 2011 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

Drury was never a playmaking 1st line center or pp specialist. In BR’s 10 season’s, he’s had 6 season where he put up better numbers than Drury’s best season ever 69pts. For Richards those were: 74,79,91, 70, 91 and 77 respectively. A trifecta of 62 pt seasons, the first 2 seasons in the league he scored 62 points ea and when he was traded he scored 62 in combo. Also had an injury shortened 48pt/56 game campaign.

This move is not a mistake because Richards is the first line center we have always coveted. He is the PP QB we desparately need and he is going to make Gabby an machine. I’m not sure a concussion constitutes….persistant problems. The fact that Hank is not going to have to stand on his head every night because we can’t score is an added bonus. This is not Drury. This is a true offensive talent.

People need to get over the fact that Parise is not coming to the Rangers. Ever.

Richards is easily the best player the Rangers have signed in years. Yes he’s 31 and has had concussion problems but he will still be an impact player for this team.
