New York Rangers News: Alex Frolov Denies Comments About Sean Avery

NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 14: Alex Frolov #31 of the New York Rangers celebrates his goal in the third period of a hockey game against the Edmonton Oilers at Madison Square Garden on November 14 2010 in New York New York. (Photo by Paul Bereswill/Getty Images)

Lost in the shuffle of the New York Islanders referendum yesterday was the comments supposedly made by former New York Ranger Alex Frolov about some of Sean Avery's antics on the ice.

In that translation Frolov supposedly alluded to Avery having called players "black monkeys," something Frolov denied in a phone interview with Jesse Spector. From his article:

"I didn't have a chance to read the article," Frolov told the Daily News by phone. "Something in the Russian newspaper about Aves. They asked me about Aves and I said he's a friend of mine and a really nice guy. What I said was that he, in the past, used to have problems where he could say something, but he's a really nice person and good friend of mine."

"I didn't say anything about Aves calling someone bad language - I was saying he's really emotional and that in the past he could say the wrong thing," Frolov told The News. "It wasn't particularly about black people. He doesn't have anything against black people. I mean, he's a nice person, and he wouldn't say something bad about black people or Asian people or any kind of people. It's some kind of misunderstanding."

Honestly, this is a very bizzare situation. On one hand, this wouldn't be the first time that a player was misquoted in translation. On the other hand, it's difficult to see how the term "black monkeys" even got translated if it never got said.

Join me after the jump for more.

Star-divide

Frolov and Avery didn't seem to have a bad relationship during their time as teammates on the Rangers. Obviously things can be drastically different behind closed doors, but everything seemed fine on the surface.

Frolov, who signed with Omsk of the KHL this off season, really isn't in a position to be upset with Avery or the Rangers either. When the Los Angeles Kings threw Frolov on the back burner, while they were in hot pursuit of Ilya Kovalchuk, the Rangers were there to give him an opportunity to resurrect his career.

Frolov only played in 43 games for the Rangers, putting up a mere 16 points (seven goals) despite seeing time on the first line. Frolov's poor showing finished with a season-ending injury that completed his Rangers tenure.

In the end, no matter what the truth is, it doesn't matter. Frolov isn't even in the NHL anymore, and Avery has heard worse things said about him in his sleep. Avery will probably keep his focus on knocking the Flyers off their game in the NHL Winter Classic, and doing everything he can to improve on a rough campaign last year.

Thoughts on this guys?

Sounds like another case of Frolov being Manny.

To hear Frolov tell the story, everything he has said since “Dada” has been misquoted.

avery

there’s three possibilities here:

- players are taking the ‘respect the code of what’s said on the ice/in the locker room’ to a whole other level and looking the other way no matter how offensive the comments are (not a complete surprise);

- he has some serious blackmail material on guys who keep quiet about what he says on the ice (remember howard berger and 590’s retraction after the cancer thing with jason blake? neither blake nor tucker would go on record to back that story up)

- his past reputation will always create lightning rod material like this until he’s out of the league

most likely it’s a combination of one and three

Agreed

although I don’t buy the first one too much. Guys like Matt Cooke and Dan Carcillo (you know Avery was talking smack to the Flyers and the Penguins) would have JUMPED on an opportunity to rip him a new one to the media. Similar to the Jason Blake cancer comments that Avery was accused of, but Blake even admitted Avery didn’t say.

Regardless, this is only news because it’s August.

Avery could also (and I’m not suggesting) get on a plane and bury him in Siberia.

Alex Frolov should get on Twitter

Cut out the middle man and let us know what going on in that mind of his. I’m pretty sure it involves a reach around..whoops. Make that wrap around.

No, you were correct the first time.. Reach arounds all day, especially on an older Russian black monkeys at the local cafe.

Frolov can deny all he wants, my guess is he probably did throw Aves under the bus, and didn’t expect a comment in Russian to a Russian newspaper to travel so fast back to the US.

Whether Avery said what he’s accused of – who knows, who cares? If he did, it was years ago, and he’s grown up since then.

You wouldn’t care if Avery actually did use racial slurs on the ice or in the lockerroom?

by Skuba7 on Aug 2, 2011 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope. As long as he’s scoring goals or setting people up who gives a F*** . Let him pull a shank out n stab a phili player as long as it opens up an opportunity for a goal or a pass for a goal I’m down .

Ps. That’s a joke

by XxC17xX on Aug 2, 2011 2:10 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I would care – racial slurs disgust me – but I’m just guessing it’s been years since he did it, and in any case it’s never been proven or admitted to.

It would be foolish to resign Avery with the surplus of bottom 6 talent we have in the pipelines.

I'd be more specific,

It’s foolish to re-sign a bottom 6 player who can’t/doesn’t play defense, when you just signed another player w/ that description for 3 years.

Who even actually says "Black Monkey"?

Isn’t the word “Monkey” on it’s own used as a derogatory term towards black people? So wouldn’t adding “Black” in there be kind of redundant? I doubt it was said, especially the way they translated it.

by Eastern Impact on Aug 2, 2011 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

If he said “white monkey” would anyone consider it racist? Or if he said “cracker” or whitey?

Lets not go down this road.

by j-red on Aug 2, 2011 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Ive heard that exact comment used on the ice before, its not pretty and definitely wrong but people do use it.

by CrazyRangerFan on Aug 2, 2011 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

i guess it a slavic thing? well not a “thing”, but a way to say it something offensive about a black person. in polish, for example, black monkey is translated into a racial slur. russian and polish are the same. so from what im seeing here, some russian or american but the russian term “black monkey” into google translator and came up with black monkey

by polishBLUE on Aug 2, 2011 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Well yea, I fully understood “Monkey” was a racial slur, I had just never heard someone say “Black Monkey”. But, as CrazyRangerFan pointed out, he’s heard it actually used, so apparently people do say it that way. Either way, seems like a Russian Reporter trying to make something out of nothing.

Remember Howard Cosell lost Monday Night Football for saying "Look at that little monkey run!"

He said it was a reference he used to talk about his grandchildren.
Seriously doubt he was a racist but it didn’t matter.

You have to remember also that Europeans take words lighter then we do here.

In America people get pissy and there panties in a bunch about words said more so then actions taken.

This is just people stirring the pot cause there is nothing going on so why not dig up old shit about Avery.

Also to consider they played together in la he might have been saying that Avery used to say harsh words like (insert racial slur that will piss Americans off so they can over react and scream on the internet) but Avery has become more tame with that new choke collar torts put on him.

Personally I doubt the Guy supporting gay rights is a huge biggot but heh who knows

I don't buy it.

I think Avery has earned a little bit of leeway with his ad supporting Gay marriage, he doesn’t strike me as someone who would be intolerant. Maybe he made some questionable jokes or something, but honestly, who hasn’t?

I doubt a guy who would be outspoken and vocal about gay marriage.........

………..would be up for spouting racist comments. And remember, sarcasm escapes people who speak English as a second language. Avery could have been telling a joke or referencing something from a movie.

He definitely doesn’t like French Canadians.

I kid, I kid.

They do all glitch goal in NHL 11 though.

He was most likely talking about Aves using racial slurs, or at least offensive things on the ice to get players off their game, but it got taken out of context.
