Bantering Points: Do The Rangers Have The Best Defense In The NHL?
- The Rangers are often looked at for their large depth on the defensive side of the game. Kevin over at Hockey This Week looks at why the Rangers might have the best defense in the league.
- One of the Rangers prospects who received the least recognition this off-season was Andreas Thuresson. Thuresson was acquired this summer from Nashville for Brodie Dupont. Chris over at Blue Seat Blogs takes a look at the potential for this young Swede.
- NHL.com has high hopes for the Rangers next season. They stated that baring any injuries, the Rangers will not only be a lock for the play-offs, but also contend for the Atlantic Division. This is definitely good news going into next season!
- As we all found out by now, Chris Drury has retired from the NHL after 12 season. Joe takes a look at why Drury's retirement does not compare to that of Marcus Naslund.
- With the recent looks at the Research and Development Camp, one of the topics of interest, changing the overtime format. Justin Bourne at Puck Daddy takes a look at why 3-on-3 overtime works the best.

If the Rangers had a real offensive D then they would have the best D in the league. Drury screwed the Rangers. He made over $30M on his contract and the $5M he was actually due could have been made up in other ways. Just selfish and with the economy the way it is it is especially insulting to those who are suffering. These athletes should get a clue sometimes. Too few like Naslund. Anyone thinking that Drury had any chance of playing again was delusional and that includes Drury himself.
Lol Idk about you …call me selfish….but I’m working my ass off if I was Drury to become a professional sportsman I’m not gonna hold back on the cash. Anything to make my own life better. What would I care about the guy working at the Friendlys? He should of worked just as hard to get somewhere. Plus all these sports guys taking a pay hit wouldn’t make a dent in the economy I bet.

I work my ass off too. You’re missing my point. I don’t begrudge athletes making their $$. But Drury got paid really well and did not reciprocate on the production during the life of his contract (see if you have a job if you don’t produce). I’m an accountant and an employer. I gave my employees their raises in spite of the economy and took less myself in doing it. And trust me, the reduction I took was felt by my family as I don’t make the kind of money that a reduction doesn’t make a difference especially with kids in college. Drury and other athletes should follow my and other small business employers that sacrifice for their employees our lead. These athletes acknowledge zero compassion for the average person that help pay their salaries to see them play a game. You should feel insulted as I do not to mention the people who have been without jobs for years in some cases.

Your analogy is way off
drury was an employee not the boss or owner. He acted like an employee which he was and took the money to which he was entitled under the contract the owner agreed to give him. You did for your employees what felt right under your set of rules (moral ones I believe) and Dolan did to Drury what he felt was right under a different set of rules (a collective bargaining agreement). It is simply inaccurate and unfair to compare your actions to Drury.

You’re wrong to compare athletes to the average employee. When these athletes compare themselves to workers like you (I assume you are not a professional athlete) and me it is delusional and misguided. They have a different set of rules they go by inclusive of guaranteed contracts that guarantee their compensation over a certain # of years no matter what their production or the results they give back (except for football). I, even as an employer, do not have a guaranteed annual salary or guaranteed term of employment. All I’m saying is that Drury could have done this another way and not waste Ranger cap space. He owed at least that to the team and he chose not to.
You do realize that a large number of companies sign their employees to contracts?
Look up what a severance package is because they are an everyday occurrence and essentially what Drury got in his buyout. i don’t what your payment system is for employees but don’t assume its the norm because your an average person and not a professional athlete.
by Zuppa Di Pesce on Aug 21, 2011 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions
usually they are one year contracts and they are for the much bigger public companies. Actually employment contracts are usually reserved for higher level officers and not the average employee. severance packages are also usually defined in the everyone’s employee manual unless there is a specific contract. but specific employee contracts are for very high-level people in the really big companies. small businesses generally do not like to lock themselves into a binding agreement with an employee for any length of time.
Do you understand that there is a collective bargaining agreement that governs the employee/employer relationship in The NHL? The players have a union. Accountants do not which likely explains the lack of guaranteed contracts. The size of the company has nothing to do with guaranteed contracts. It all has to do with bargaining power. Unions have power to extract concessions from owners and mgmt. On the other hand, most CPA’s are fungible and have absolutely zero bargaining power. Your hatred Drury’s actions seems misguided, but rant away if you like.

I understand the CBA well enough. What has that got to do with Drury doing the right thing? Were Naslund and Rafalski exempt from the CBA? Come on. And I don’t hate Drury, I wanted him here in the beginning, I just don’t believe he did the right thing is all. You are entitled to your opinion and so am I. I know plenty of fans that share my opinion as well. There’s no right or wrong although you think I’m wrong, lol. So be it.
But Drury got paid really well and did not reciprocate on the production during the life of his contract
Drury put up the same numbers in NY as he pretty much did his entire career (his first 2 years with ny) Then injury and reduced role played a factor his last 2 years. Whenever Drury’s name comes up, it is way too often put in a bust category, the truth is it is a GM bust. You can’t expect a player to put up 100 points a year simply because you gave him the contract of a 100 pt. per season guy. I put both Redden and Drury as GM busts.
getting somewhere in life isn’t always about effort. Some people are born with privilege and opportunity, put in no effort, and get far. Others are born with zero opportunity, pour in everything they have into getting ahead, and either don’t make it or die young.
well said. unfortunately this is 100% true. the $$ do not measure “success”, it’s what you get out of life, work hard, and be respectful to others in spite of the general disrespect that engulfs our society. These athletes lose sight on how lucky they are to be paid what they are paid for what they get to do. Be around terminally ill children and young adults like I am and you really know the true meaning of “perspective” and “appreciation.”

I’m in medical transportation for the elderly, so yeah I hear us on the perspective. Only way I don’t get depressed is to stay somewhat disconnected.

in life
if you are offered money for your work you take it. I’m sure dru is involved with some great charities.
fix your headline
I’ll go out on a limb and say that the Rangers do not have the best “defensive” in the NHL. They do, however, have one of the best defenses…..
Prole art threat.
I doubt we are the best. Can make a case that we are one of the best shutdown d squads but we can’t make an outlet pass for shit. Lets see if del zotto can step it up. If he can be half of what leetch was we would be much closer to making that claim of best in league

Let's keep it in our pants boys..
Lots of potential on the blue line but to say “best” or even discuss it is premature. Top 5 talent wise is probably a safer call. But a number of things still need to break right for this group.
If MDZ pulls his shit together and McD and Sauer replicate last season..with Eminger/Erixon being steady, this group could easily be in discussion for best in the league.
As I’ve stated before, McD and Sauer styles make them less likely to have MDZ struggles or sophmore slumps..and Erixon / Eminger should provide more 3rd pair minutes for Torts than he’s had it recent years.
MDZ is the wildcard. If he pull his shit together it would make this group Elite.

not just about replicating last year's success
but exceeding it. The thing that got everyone so excitied is that for as well as these guys played, they are only rookies. Us fans could only assume that they will get much better.
Of course..
We all hope for improvement from McD and Sauer over last year. But you can’t assume they will. The point is they don’t need to improve for this team to be top 5 in the conference standings.
I think Sauer has shown he’s a dependable stay at home type..I think McD has offensive upside that might show thru more this year.

MCD definitely has an offensive upside that has not shown through yet. He shows a glimpse here and there. Believe it or not , Eminger has an offensive upside that has not been shown yet either.

The Rangers may have the best defense prospects in the game
but I doubt their defense is tops. Maybe when you include Hank the D is top 5 or something. Staal and Girardi are very good. McDonagh and Sauer are a solid 2nd pair and if Erixon is as ready as we think he is, boom. MDZ has taken a step back but if he pans out he’ll make it the best.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
No we don't.
But we are good. And if a few things happen: McD and Sauer improving, MDZ pulling his shit together, and Erixon having a similar season to McD last year we’ll be damn good. Probably one of the best shut down defenses, but not overall yet.
I think if by defense you are looking at defense/goalie than were one of the best. Still not THE BEST though.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
I think the best idea for OT is
5 minutes of 5 on 5
then
5 minutes of 4 on 4
then
10 minutes of 3 on 3
then
shootout

A 20 minute overtime for a regular season game? Not likely.

Imagine that on game 2 of 4 in 5 nights
The shootout really is not to amuse the fans, its for gaining an outcome to the game. They should revise the points system
3 pts for a regulation or OT win
2 pts for shootout win
1 pt end of reg tie for the loser of ot/shootout

10 min 4 on 4 then shootout.
Fair enough? Stops teams from playing for the shootout.

How about alternating power plays? Like college football. Each team gets a PP. Each team gets to decide wether they go first or second for that round. Continue until no more tie. This makes it more exciting as PP produce more scoring chances, no shootout.

I think the Rangers have a very complete defensive unit. Staal and Girardi might be one of the best top pairs in the league now. The emergence of both Mc D and Sauer into above average young players brings it together nicely. Eminger is a steady 6th or 7th. Hopefully Jan’s kid lives up to the hype and can be the #5 we need. As far as a QB or offensive defenseman, Del Z would have been the obvious choice out of our group but I think his defense and confidence are lacking.
