New York Rangers Analysis: Can Del Zotto Bounce Back This Season?

NEW YORK NY - FEBRUARY 20: Michael Del Zotto #4 of the New York Rangers controls the puck against the Philadelpia Flyers at Madison Square Garden on February 20 2011 in New York City. The Flyers defeated the Rangers 4-2. (Photo by Chris Trotman/Getty Images)

Sorry for the lack of a post yesterday. My humble abode got the crap kicked out of it by Hurricane Irene, but we're up and running now after a night at my girlfriend's sister's house. Hope all of you made out OK as well.

Anyway, onto what is sure to be a continuing hot-topic discussion as the season draws closer: Expectations for Michael Del Zotto

After an impressive rookie season offensively for Del Zotto, in which he scored nine goals and 37 points in 80 games, many were expecting big things from the young puck moving defenseman. But after just a few games last season, it became evident that something wasn't right with Del Zotto's game. He was telegraphing his breakout passes, his offense was sagging and he was our of position far too often on opposing goals.

The New York Rangers' brass saw the signs, and made the right decision to send Del Zotto down to the AHL to season his game and get his confidence back. I was lucky enough to get credentialed to a few Connecticut Whale games through my real job, and got to see him play on a few separate occasions. His game looked a little more refined at the AHL level, but he still seemed like he was trying to do too much on every shift. Still, it was a step up from what we saw during the season.

What does this mean for next season? Join me after the jump to find out.

Star-divide

Obviously most of this hinges on wether or not Del Zotto cracks the roster, but I can't see any way he doesn't, unless he has an absolutely dismal performance in camp. Remember that Del Zotto is in the final year of his entry level contract. That means the Rangers have just one more season to get a look at him before he becomes an RFA; that will surely factor into the equation during camp.

So assuming he makes the team, what can we expect from Del Zotto this upcoming season?

Let's start with his time in the AHL last year.

Del Zotto wasn't sent down because of a lack of goals and assists, he was sent down because his defensive game needed some fine tuning and he lost confidence in his game. There were offensive parts of his game that needed work however, and from what I saw from press row he was focusing on them.

In the games I went to he wasn't tossing the deep breakout passes as frequently, he moved the puck out of the defensive zone with confidence and made smart decisions with it once he hit the red line. He was quick to get back when he pinched, and his positioning seemed a lot better as well.

One of the things I did notice was some hesitation when it came to shooting from the point, at both even strength and on the power play. I only remember him taking three shots form the point in the games I covered. One hit the post, one missed the net and the final shot was saved by a miraculous diving effort by the goalie.

But the main thing I saw from Del Zotto was rejuvenated confidence. He was in bright spirits in the locker room, understood why he was sent down in the first plave and made a point to fix his game.

Back to next year's expectations, I would caution those expecting a 40-point year. Del Zotto will probably end up on the third pairing, and should see some power play time (I'm expecting Tim Erixon to see some as well); but his focus will most likely be on shoring up his defense.

One of the things that opened so many eyes when it came to Del Zotto's game in the OHL was his ability to create offense out of nothing, even if he was from behind his own net. Del Zotto always knew where his breakout forwards were, and he was skilled enough to get the puck to them. It made him successful his rookie season, but once other teams started catching on they picked him apart.

That doesn't mean Del Zotto doesn't have the skills to do that in the NHL, it just means it takes a little more work. And for the upcoming season at least, that's not going to be a focus. If Del Zotto plays a solid defensive game, I don't think anyone can complain about the offensive figures he puts up this season. Defense first, offense second; we already saw what happens when it goes the other way around.

If you wanted to be conservative, you might expect around 20 points from him this year. If you wanted to be optimistic, you would expect him to hit or exceed his rookie-season mark of 37. But again, if his defensive game is improving the offensive figures can be disregarded if they end up being low. And while that might not be what you want to see from Del Zotto a few years down the road, it could be a necessary stepping stone early in his career.

To his credit, Del Zotto recently removed himself from Twitter to focus on making the team, and even in the AHL he made it very clear that he wants to do nothing but help the New York Rangers. I was surprised at how good his attitude was while he was down in the minors, it spoke volumes of what he could become one day.

But until we actually see him on the ice, this is nothing but speculation. Regardless, what are you expecting from Del Zotto this season?

Not starting him at the whale is a big mistake. can’t have MDZ paired with Erixon, that would be asking for trouble. And breaking up McD and Sauer just to have MDZ and Erixon play is not wise either. That’s why Eminger was re-signed to help with Erixon and MDZ. but that’s just my opinion.

by Richter1994 on Aug 29, 2011 10:42 AM EDT reply actions

I actually think it's asking for trouble

not to have him make the team honestly. The Rangers need to see what he has to offer this year in order to figure out what to do with him when he becomes an RFA.

It’s a tough situation for sure, but I think the Rangers want to know what they have in Del Zotto.

Even though it's his last year of his ELC

He has no arb rights after his deal is done. Perhaps given the depth of the Rangers D prospects they might cut him a little less slack, but even amongst the likes of McIlrath, Valentenko and Kundratek, my understanding is that DZ’s game is still the most offensively inclined out of everyone.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Aug 29, 2011 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

You are correct

Del Zotto’s offensive game is easily the best out of all the guys you mentioned. Some scouts, however, believe that if Erixon taps into his offensive potential it would rival Del Zotto’s. Even so, Erixon put up respectable offensive numbers in the SEL as a 19-year-old, while playing 20 minutes a night.

Understood Joe and I don’t disagree per se. But MDZ is young and emotional. Having him make the team and having a set back could ruin the kid. my thought was he’s just coming off a bad year and injury, to start him at the Whale, even for a month, and let him get settled before bringing him up. I have always thought one of MDZ’s problem was he was too cocky for his own good and got devastated when he played poorly and sent down. Build him up and don’t send him down.

by Richter1994 on Aug 29, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't disagree that condense

Is a big issue for Del Zotto. Which is exactly when I think he needs to start the year in the NHL.

I’m ok with it. just hope MDZ’s is more mentally tough and it will not be an issue either way (succeed or fail).

by Richter1994 on Aug 29, 2011 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

The same could easily be said

For Erixon when it comes to adjusting to the NHL game. I know he did well in the SEL and it’s been said many times that the SEL is 2nd to the NHL in terms of skill, but at the very least Del Zotto has 100 or so games of previous NHL experience.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Aug 29, 2011 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

write it down, Erixon will not only make the team but play well in a short amount of time.

by Richter1994 on Aug 29, 2011 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Eminger?

What do you like about Eminger? I think he’s overrated. He does a satisfactory job, and doesn’t really control the puck or see the ice well. This would be an awful way to bring MDZ back. I can see your point about an unexperienced Erixon too. Why not go Sauer and MDZ? Think Sauer can be a reliable partner for MDZ, and MDZ might influence some offense. They can really teach each other.

by admichla on Aug 29, 2011 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I disliked Eminger when he first came here last year but when he started to play a physical game then he was a much better D. He wore down at the end of the year and Torts wanted to get more offense in the line-up with Gilroy but Eminger is a very capable 6th D and could play with Erixon or MDZ very easily. Forcing both Erixon and MDZ onto the roster does not help anyone including Erixon and MDZ.

by Richter1994 on Aug 30, 2011 6:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I loved the Sauer/McD combo — but in all honesty, they’re both just shut-down defensemen, and could really help out the team by playing with a more offensive D-man like DelZotto. If MDZ takes a chance and gets caught, you need a good D-man there to back him up, and one of those two would be perfect in that spot. We’ll see how it plays out, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see them split.

Pierre McGuire needs to go away.

Mcdonagh has offense to his game, and he should show it. Not like MDZ, but we should see 20-25 point seasons out of him, if not more.

He was a big contributor to the power play

in Wisconsin. He might be one of those guys that puts up 20 points for like five years and then hits 50+ out of the blue.

id like to see MDZ start the year with the big club

Put him with Eminger who could compensate for most of DZs mistakes in the defensive zone. Kid has a world of talent, just got to rebuild that confidence

problem is that Erixon is more ready right now than MDZ is to play with the big club. you would have to separate McD and Sauer for MDZ and Erixon to play at the same time. Eminger would be the healthy scratch.

by Richter1994 on Aug 29, 2011 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus MDZ and Erixon are both LD’s, MDZ has a hard time playing the left side and you don’t want to start Erixon off playing offside. Then again McD played offside in college.

by Kmp on Aug 29, 2011 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

very good point. the reason there is such a debate on where MDZ starts the season is because I believe Erixon is a lock to start with the Rangers.

I do see Eminger

playing in a 7th defenseman role. I don’t see him starting over Erixon, the organization is too high on him.

I think losing DZ would be a real mistake. Can’t forget his vision and passing skills, superior to most nhl players- I think he’ll bounce back.

The key to MDZ is not putting pressure on him right away.

Keep him off the power play and leave him in 3rd pair until he earns the time. Otherwise leave him in Hartford.. he and Redden will be the most feared PP combo in the AHL.

that’s what I think.

my understanding is that Montreal is hot and heavy to get EC. If thats the case, no worries, we’ll likely get their top 2 defensive prospects in return. This will make Del Z expendable. haha.

Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.

They must be mesmerized by this highlight film.

He has some of the nastiest goals, problem is they are infrequent and normall separate by extended periods of nothingness. Great on the shoot out as well I should add.

Isn't that Hecklund's latest rumor?

I don’t put any stock in anything that schmuck says… he’ll say anything to get hits on his website. When he gets better than a mediocre 2% success rate (which won’t be anytime soon), maybe I’ll peek over there, but it’s all rubbish.

by Kritikal on Aug 29, 2011 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

We are loaded with D prospects in our system. And EC is a very good Ranger- he tends to score at key times, and plays hard every night. Not to mention he wants to be here more than anyone- Did you hear what he said about Torts? He’s an excellent 4th line guy. Don’t forget, injuries will occur. Last year players like him really stepped it up.

An why do you want to get rid of DZ so bad? The future will not be like the past. Why not watch him first before deciding?

by admichla on Aug 31, 2011 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

The word on Erixon is that he is extremely responsible and makes great decisions… MDZ is a liability in his own end, and makes poor decisions over and over again.
I think he has to start in Hartford.
Don’t get me wrong, I love what he can be. But he’s not there yet, and he was rushed. He needs time with the Whale to build his confidence back up. He didn’t get enough of that time last season because of injury. If he starts there, he could work his way onto the big club, and hopefully be here permanently by mid-season. Too many mistakes were already made with this kid… he needs more time to develop.

CAN? No.. not a matter of 'can'......

it’s a matter of “will”.
Does he have the “will” to improve.
I believe he does.
Then, if he applies that – “will” he actually improve.

Only his desire, and his play, will tell. We’ll know by October.

Trade Deadline

I think we give him to the trade deadline, if he hasnt preformed then we should deal him for some sorta draft pick, we have log jam at the blue line. Even with him being our offensive minded D-man we may need to move on after this year.Prospects are waiting for a spot to open up.

by Zesta02 on Aug 30, 2011 4:34 AM EDT reply actions

Give hime the full year.

If he horrible at the deadline no one will want him. Give him a full year and at the end of the season then “LOOK” into trading him. Send him to Detroit or something since they’ll need a good O-Dmen by the end of next season. But for now don;t think about trading him. He’s got way too much talent to be worrying about a trade possibility. If he starts hearing that from fans or even the club that kid is just gone, MDZ might never get his confidence back.

I could get more love from a Cactus then you..........

by ReverseLife on Aug 30, 2011 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

MDZ plays 33 more NHL games and he has to go through waivers? If that doesn’t guarantee he starts with the Whale then I don’t know what does unless he plays lights out during the preseason.
