Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

An article that (maybe) we can all agree on. Fair warning, there are those number thingy's called advanced stats involved, and they actually prove that the Rangers are moving forward (and that Stepan might not have a sophomore slump if he stays in the same role as George pointed out yesterday).

Other than that, there are two other reasons why this story is a good read:

1) An attention to the fact that Hank is aging, so NYR better hurry.

2) Proves once-more that Christensen should be buried/bought out/whatever.

Time to believe?

Hank won't go anywhere

The Rangers have such cap flexibility that they can re-sign who they want or get comparable replacements. Hank is the key, he must stay.

Neither will Callahan

Gaborik and Boyle obviously depends on how they preform the next three years.

Hit post accidently

hit UFA by the end of the season. W
If they do, Sather better be signing one of them.
We will have a huge injection of cap space.

If we sign Parise, we are golden. Ready to be contenders.
If they get Suter, it gives us the flexibility on the left side. It will make one of our young LH defenseman expendable, allowing us to put together an enticing deal for another great player. Imagine 2 years from now.

Staal – Sauer
Suter – Girardi

The problem with Parise is what we do with the players under him. You figure Parise takes up the money from Wolski, Avery, etc leaving the team.

Now what do you do when AA, Step, Sauer, McD and others need raises? Who do you get rid of? Gaborik?

Even if we wanted to trade for him, it wouldn’t happen. As far as I know, the Rangers and the Devils have never made a trade.

agree 100%. Devs would never trade him to us. it will be interesting to see if Zack makes it to free agency or Uncle Lou trades him to a team that will lock him up long-term. Given that I would bet that if he gets traded it would be to a western conference team then I think he gets to free agency. Not to mention Zack could be the most sought after FA ever in the NHL so why wouldn’t he?

by Richter1994 on Aug 7, 2011 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea… I’m really not convinced Parise is gonna sign long-term with the Debbies. Suter’s availability will depend on what happens with Weber. If they feel they need to trade Weber, Suter probably gets signed long term. If they sign Weber to a huge deal, they may let Suter walk.

by j-red on Aug 4, 2011 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Nashville has a lot to worry about with 2 great players hitting UFA in Rinne and Suter, and their franchise player hitting RFA again. They are a cash strapped team, after all. If Rinne has another season like he did (which is a big if), they are going to be in big trouble.

As for Parise, I think it is pretty clear that he and his agent intend to hit Unrestricted Free Agency.

I think we are looking at 9 mil in cap space opening up.
Wolski 3.9 mil coming off the books
Avery 2 mil coming off the books
Fedetenko 1.5 coming off the books
Eric Christensen 1 mil coming off the books
Eminger’s 800k will come off the books.
Chris Drury buyout cap hit goes from 3.7 mil to 1.6 mil

Resign MDZ for 1.5 and prust for 1.2.

Right now, we are the Devil’s nightmare waiting to happen.

I saw the article and was very surprised. I didn’t know that ESPN NY had any idea what hockey was, not to mention actually knowing who Artem Anisimov is!

Jokes aside, this article pumped me up even more for the upcoming season. Though we are not a lock to get to the Cup Final this year, I believe that it IS true that our Cup window truly opens this year. We retained our core, picked up Richards (converting a weakness into a strength), and have a stable of prospects that continue to develop and work their way to the NHL (not to mention THE KING). I am SOOOOO ready for the puck to drop this fall. No lockout, no CBA nonsense, no footage of men in suits walking places. Just pure New York Ranger hockey. Cannot wait. LET’S GO RANGERS

To win a Cup, a lot of things have to break right, and a lot of things have to not happen, like crucial injuries in the final few laps. Having said that, maybe we got our injury bug out this past season, we stay healthy, and people perform better than expected.
The point the article makes about a very competitive East is well taken. The strongest team SEEMS to be Washington, but they’ve screwed the pooch so many playoff series….

We can all be legitimately fired up.
I just texted my brother – next week is the final week until Spring ’12 where there is no professional football or hockey in some form. Thank God.

I’ve been saying it for years, but AA is going to be better the Dubi and Cally. Seriously.

He’s going to be a 30/30 guy in a few years. playing in all scenarios. That line is amazing.

The problem with signing a guy like Parise for 1st line LW is where the money comes from. Sure we could sign him using Drury’s buyout hit lessening, and Wolski and Avery being gone. But what about when guys like Step, AA, McD, Sauer and others need raises? At that point we wont have money. I guess we could get rid of replacing him with a cheaper option.

An interesting route would be to spend 4-4.5 mil on a first line player (guys like Boyes, Hemsky, Brown, Penner, etc etc etc etc), allowing us to keep both Richards and Gaborik.

Just a thought.

I thought Boyes to Buffalo was an amazing get. He suffered from not having a center. That said, I think the Rangers are ok on the right wing. As it stands the way the roster shakes out, he’d be on the third line. Which, with Stepan would be a sick third line, but I don’t think the Rangers would want to spend 4.5 on a third liner.

I doubt Hemsky goes anywhere for 4.5 million. He’s gotta be looking at something like at least $5.5 million, I think. I do like him though. I see him going someplace like LA, though.

I completely agree, I think people are getting out of hand with the Parise thoughts a year from now. We already have one severely burdening contract on the books we don’t need a second with Parise. See how this team performs then think about possible upgrades next year but keep in mind years down the road when our young guys get better and need raises.

It's nice to see ESPN cover hockey, but it's also why I'm glad the league didn't get involved with them longterm

It’s great to see ESPN cover the Rangers, and I’m glad that Rob threw it out there to give us something to talk about, but content wise, it seems like it thrown together from a media guide. He also makes it sound like all we have to do is win before everyone becomes a free agent, ignoring the the fact we need to keep our two, 30+ year old, $7 million dollar “superstars” healthy, get the same overachievement we saw from so many players last year (Boyle, Girardi, McD, Sauer), and get Gabby back on the right track.

Some examples of stuff that bugs me…

With the signing of Brad Richards and the extension of restricted free agents Brian Boyle, Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan, the Rangers’ core roster will be locked in place for the next three seasons.

While I understand that Boyle signed at around the same time as Dubi/Cally , but is he really that cruical to the cup? Even if he repeats last season, he’s pegged as our 4th line center, and Hume acknowledges that when he talks about our centers later in the article, and he mentions Richards, AA, and Step while leaving Boyle out of the equation. The fact he even lists each of the guys in the order they signed makes me think he pulled their name off the Rangers “news” page.

After these next three seasons, that window could close in a hurry. In the summer of 2014, Callahan, Boyle, Marian Gaborik, Dan Girardi and Henrik Lundqvist will all hit unrestricted free agency.

Again with Boyle??? We’re already worrying about losing him in 3 years. Where we will ever find another 4th line center? Girardi too. I think the chances that one, or both of them, are booed off Broadway before their contract is over is MUCH better then the chances of either walking as free agents and crippling our team because we can’t find a replacement. As far as Gabby or Hank goes, If we get to the point, 3 seasons from now, where both are healthy and productive enough to still command what they’re getting now, I would be AMAZED. The only REAL possibility to break out and be a premiere UFA is Cally, and if be can be a 70 point guy, I think we’ll have no problem paying him. Our problem isn’t if we can win before these guys get gobbled up as UFA’s, it’s about winning before the wheels fall off.

Despite the common talk of “sophomore slumps,” the cliché is a myth, as discussed by Hockey Prospectus author Tom Awad a few seasons back.

“Hey guys, Dickey Dunn Tom Awad wrote this, it’s got to be true”! To be clear that wasn’t as much a shot a Mr. Awad, or his book, as it was an excuse to work in a “Slap Shot” reference. I don’t get how you can talk about “Sophmore Slumps” and not even mention MDZ. Well, unless you just pulled a random stat from a google search to support a feel good point you thought you should make about a player you thought you should mention.

Marc Staal entered the Rangers’ lineup in 2007-08. In every season since, New York has never fallen out of the NHL’s top 10 for fewest goals allowed.

Another example of finding (and somewhat manipulating) a fact to support a point you think you should make. The Rangers string of appearances in the top 10 for fewest goals allowed started two seasons BEFORE Staal came up… When Hank entered the lineup. I’m not looking to start an arguement about Staal’s value, just pointing out that there are plenty of other stats you can use to talk about Staal. Tweaking the first one you find is just lazy. Is it just more, or could Mike Hume possibly be the only guy who DOESN’T KNOW Marc Staal has a brother?

All in all, it’s effortless stuff like this that makes me happy that the league stuck with NBC/Versus. Sure Pierre MacGuire is a creep, and brown nose, but atleast he knows what balloon knots to stick his nose up. Milbury is clearly an idiot, but everyone who knows hockey already knew that from his time with the Isles. Milbury might spurt the rambling of a fool, but atleast he’s giving his foolish opinions on a game he watched, not pulling up stats sheets and rosters to fill his word quota on a hockey article so he can bang out his next piece on ping pong or women’s basketball.

by BuckarooClub on Aug 4, 2011 7:38 PM EDT reply actions

If anything, in 3 years Hank and Gabby would take less money. Or at least less relative to the cap limit.

I can see how some of this stuff bothers you, and some of it bothers me a tad… but it seems like you’re nitpicking here to be honest. Just enjoy the fact that ESPN is actually doing a decent job covering the Rangers, and if you don’t like the article than don’t read it.

Just my two cents.

by BuckarooClub on Aug 5, 2011 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I think to call it “nitpicking” is a little tough. It wasn’t like I had to try to hard to find out that ESPN gave a guy who never watched a Rangers game the job of writing about the team, and that guy went out of his way to prove you could write an article on a team without ever having seen them play.

I’ve said my piece, and I’m not dwelling on it, ESPN’s failure to deliver anything close to their self proclaimed “World Wide Leader” is a definatly a pet peeve of mine, and when i saw such a stunning example of it, i thought i’d draw attention to it. To put it in another light, this is from the “ESPN New York” site, and they couldn’t find one person in that office who knew anything about the Rangers to write that article? You never know, maybe some day it changes. The squeeky wheel gets the grease right?

by bwl1 on Aug 4, 2011 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Good hockey article from ESPN! I have to say that this window is wide open in terms of recognizing who got better and worse in the East. I’ll say Sabers, Devils, Pittsburgh and Tampa stayed the same. Isles, Panthers, Caps, Jets, Toronto and Rangers got better. While the Sens, Canadiens, Bruins, Canes and Flyers are worse then last year. But did the Leafs, Isles, Jets and Panthers put themselves in position for the playoffs, no. I like our chances this year and for the next 5 because by time Gabby is done, a replacement will have already been found. Hank will be Hank until he is Fatso’s age. And we have prospects up the wazoo. Sather seemed to finally figure it out. On paper, at least.

by louielounz1 on Aug 4, 2011 9:43 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

With the roster we have right now, anything can happen. With the addition of any of our prospects over the next few years, even more good things can happen. We have the heart, the soul, the jam, NYR’s pride. We do have the talent to do it. We are not missing anything. Could things be better? Of course, but if players like AA, Stepan, Cally, Dubi, Sauer, MCD, Boyle, continue to improve, that will be what makes us great. If players like Gabby and Wolski step up and play to their talent level, well that just puts us over the top. If Hank has another banner season, no problems. We definitely have the right core of players. As others have said, I think we have a 5 year window.

Keys to a Ranger cup run from a Lightning fan

1) Dont burn out king henrik 2) Ship Avery out-he is locker room poison 3) you have Brad (19) now-he is a class act you will love him 4) Ranger D – help king henrik this year 5) Gaborik grow a pair and take the hits (you can give them out too you know) 6) Team conditioning must be a priority 7) stay healthy.(Callahan) 8) Torts learn “ummfaba” when dealing with the media.

by bolt69 on Aug 7, 2011 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

1) Fair point. Up until Biron was hurt Torts was doing a great job keeping Henrik fresh. Afterwards we had no choice.
2) Comments can be made about Avery not being good enough to be on a team, but truthfully his three best friends on the team seem to be Henrik, Richards, and Gaborik. He doesn’t seem to be a locker room poison at all, despite his antics.
3) I agree. I believe we will come to love him.
4) Our D should be solid. I only truthfully see improvement from our young second pair of McDonagh and Sauer, who were solid last year. Staal and Girardi are out shut down first pair, and we have a lot of competition for the 5,6,7 spots. Eminger should make the team, and the last two spots will most likely be taken by Del Zotto and Erixon. I believe the D will be solid, especially with or abundance of two-way forwards.
5) Agreed, but Richards should help here. By having a “skill” line, hopefully Torts is smart enough to not make RIchards-Gaborik play a gritty game. Last year he was asked to play like Callahan or Prust, grinders, and he seemed confused and out of place. I agree that he needs to grow a pair, but by being on a skilled line with other skilled players he should be more comfortable, as well as more effective.
6) Team conditioning is one thing that wont be an issue. Torts will make sure of that.
7) True for every team. Hopefully we can avoid the injury bug.
8) It wouldn’t be fun if Torts didn’t have a mouth.

Keep stopping by though, we love input. The Lightning are my 2nd team in the east!

How is Aves a Poison? I’ve never heard a bad word from a teamate, and as was pointed out, Hank, Gabby and BR love him. If you’re calling him a “poison” based on his resume.. Downie is a first ballot "Dirthbag HOF " lock.

re: resonse to Ranger cup run

Thanks for your answers, a lot of insight. Dont get enough Ranger games on the tube in Tampa. I blog on a lot of the other NHL team sights. The only one I wont touch is the Flyers. when signing up you have to swear you love kate smith and the old spectrum and even though I am a Lightning fan I grew up In brooklyn with the Rangers and detest everything philly cheesesteak attitudes-kate smith-and the old spectrum, so forget that noise.

Aves poison

Sorry I didn’t clarify that point, It’s not about his relationship with his teamates it’s the media drag down of any proffesional. It winds up becoming I instead of team in the end and if the media (remember New York) decides it would sell to keep ripping him it becomes a distraction to the team, and that is what I meant by lockeroom poison.

About Downer

In response to Downie being called a dirtbag, I will give you a true assesment being a born New Yorker, I will not lie, New Yorkers don’t have to because we fear no one.(That means you too) Steve Downie suffers from LGTHIABG syndrome (Little guy thinks he is a big guy syndrome) He is a very talented player (First line 10 games last year) he is never intentionally dirty, but his attitude on the ice is that of the little brother fighting against his big brothers (If he has big brothers they definitly tortured him) The organization has worked hard to develop him (remember 94 cup disipline) and he is tking thier cue. Now as far as Aves is concerned, I watched him chase a puck behind the net and crack goalie Dan Ellis twice in the head with his stick.(no call) and Iv seen him try with his stick to turn the great eight (ovie) into a falsetto without provocation. so seriously Downers hits and trouble come on the ice, Aves seems to drop his dirty laundry everywhere or is he just messy (last word has nothing to do with the great Mark Messier, My all time favorite)

Have to make a correction

When I wrote (that means you too) I had meant to say you also as a New Yorker are proud and fear no one, no heat intended, this is the blog for Ranger fans and I definitely respect you and it. sorry about the miscomunication on my side.
