New York Rangers News: J.T. Miller Makes Exhibition Roster; McColgan Cut

ST PAUL, MN - JUNE 24: 15th overall pick Jonathan Miller by the New York Rangers poses for a portrait during day one of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft at Xcel Energy Center on June 24, 2011 in St Paul, Minnesota. (Photo by Nick Laham/Getty Images)

Team USA released their final rosters for the upcoming exhibition games against Finland and Sweden. The one name that still remains on that list is J.T. Miller. However, unfortunately, it seems as if Shane McColgan has not made the finalized list and was sent home.

Even though J.T. Miller was held pointless against Finland, he showed signs of brilliance in his play. As The Blue Seats pointed out in his article, Miller made some unbelievable passes to create multiple odd-man rushes against Finland. This is nothing but good news for J.T Miller, and this only increases his chances at making Team USA. He's not only impressed the Rangers staff, but also Team USA at the international level.

Team USA's next game will be against Sweden on Wednesday, August 10th. If anyone is interested, Team USA will have a live box score, and a paid Webcast for viewing the game.

Seems like just yesterday we were like who the Hell is Miller…now he is a rising star within a couple of months. Good for him. Looking forward to seeing what all the talk is about.

In Gordie we trust

but the more i read about this kid the more I love his game.

and for what reason exactly has gordie earned that trust?
And how exactly does this make Miller a rising star?

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 9, 2011 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well as for Gordie

Lundqvist, Dubinsky, Callahan, Staal, Girardi (Clark was a big reason why the Rangers signed him), Stepan, Anisimov, Sauer are all important players for the Rangers, all drafted by Clark and his regime. That along with a plethora of nuggets of gold the Rangers have in the pipeline.

Something tells me he has an idea about what he is doing when it comes to prospects. He hasn’t always made the obvious pick, but he is a hell of a scout when it comes to prospects. He has easily earned my trust, and he should earn yours too with his resume.

Selective memory, huh? You just basically picked through nine drafts (2000-2008) and pointed out a stud goalie, a really good defensemen (staal), a top line caliber forward (dubi), and a bunch of supporting parts. And for the misses in that time? No mention of Montoya, nothing of Sanguinetti, no hugh jessiman, along with many more. Yes he has had some good picks, but he has also had more than his fair share of mistakes so to assume a pick will turn out just because he made it is extremely foolish….

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 9, 2011 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

and yes i know not every pick turns out, but at the same time one can say not every pick busts as the excuse for him finding a couple decent players over the last ten years….

Part of what you say makes sense, but enough with the damn Jessimen bashing.

He was a stud. Great prospect. HE GOT INJURED AND HIS GAME WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM HIM.

How is it Gordie’s fault that he got injured? At that rate, we might as well blame him for taking Cherepanov (RIP) as well.

jessiman was a horrible pick

with parise, richards, getzlaf, brown, and perry on the board

a horrid, horrid, awful pick

True

But not that it matters in the presented argument because since then we have overhauled the entire scouting staff.

At the time he was a strong pick.

WIthout the injury, who knows.

jessiman was a reach at 13

parise or getzlaf were the right pick to make

jessiman’s flameout just makes it that much worse

ahmad’s rantings about fans overvaluing draft picks was never truer than in the year after that pick, where he was compared to john leclair and kevin stevens (pre-crackhead days), while only a handful of people noted that he would be playing in an inferior program at dartmouth

sorry, guys, it was a terrible pick no matter who made the call

Sorry, but you can make a case for Brown, Parise, or even Getzlaf, but there’s no way Perry or Richards were considerations at the #12 pick.

Errr….Jessiman was 20th among the NA skaters on the final central scouting list. Richards was 30, Perry was 35th

richards and perry were in the ohl, jessiman was at dartmouth

which is a better learning ground?

which is more likely to put a player on the path to the nhl?

Correct, but if you want to compare CHL to CHL, there’s no chance they take Perry/Richards ahead of Brown/Getzlaf.

Thus, there’s no way Richards/Perry were options at 12, and can’t be compared as such.

Jessiman was a great pick

like Moosh said above, an injury basically ruined his career. Sanguinetti wasn’t a bad pick, and it’s too soon to call him a bust, he just didn’t fit the Rangers mold.

Montoya was a bust, I’ll give you that, although his progression might have been hurt by never being given the chance to start thanks to Lundqvist.

Listen, I’m not saying Clark can’t screw up, but I’m giving miller more than a month before I start questioning Clark. I also didn’t mention guys like Blackburn (who was also very good before an injury).

No one team has nothing but great picks. But since 2000, the Rangers have turned a barren farm system into one bursting with prospects and potential.

I am giving Miller more than a month before calling him a bad pick as well, but I’m certainly not gonna already call him a good pick after a month either. Just gonna let it play out….

And yes, the way I see it Sanguinetti, Blackburn (and his career 894 sv%), and Jessiman are definitely busts. Did not even know Blackburn was a first round pick by the way.

by Ahmad Bradshaw on Aug 9, 2011 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Sanguinetti didn’t pan out (though he at least made the NHL), but they flipped him, Horak, and what turned out to be Markus Granlund for Jesper Fasth and Tim Erixon. So that one turned out good in some respects.

Also, Clark wasn’t hired until 2002, so Blackburn falls under Sather/Maloney/Renney (who was Dir of Player Personnel at the time). Clark also wasn’t head scout until 2005, and only took his current position in 2007. That’s when I believe he actually ‘controlled’ the draft, and so that’s where I’d personally begin to actually judge him.

Of course, the 2007 draft will have been a bust (tragedy aside) unless Hagelin makes an impact, but 2008 looks good, assuming MDZ gets his head straight.

I don’t how much credit to assign Clark/Sather for the acquisitions of McDonagh and Erixon, who are both recent and highly regarded 1st round picks. I do think that needs to factor in, however.

blackburn is too small a sample to call a bust

sixty-three games and a career cut short by nerve damage isn’t enough to call him a bust, regardless of what his numbers were (let’s also not forget the 01-02 and 02-03 teams were putrid all around)

he falls into the category of manny malhotra, thrown to the wolves as proof of a youth movement despite not being ready for prime time

Gordie didn’t take over of the whole drafting until 2007. So what you just said is completely irrelevant.

I feel like the Miller and Kreider picks are similar in that they were both relatively unknown American players at the time of the draft and within a couple months there stock starts rising due to the international play of theirs. It also seems like their game is similar in that they both like to skate with the puck and create chances with their speed. Hopefully their both in the system soon.

yea i definitely feel like that comparison holds merit, even though we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves in praising Miller’s international play just yet…
