New York Rangers Breaking News: Ryan Callahan Named Captain
The New York Rangers have announced that Ryan Callahan has been named the 26th captain in the team's prestigious history. Callahan will be taking the "C" from former-captain Chris Drury, who was bought out and subsequently retired this offseason.
Many have been calling Callahan to be named captain, even before Drury was bought out. The reality is that Callahan plays a captain's game, does whatever is needed to win and is well respected by the league and his teammates. It's a perfect finishing touch on a brilliant offseason for the organization. As fans, you have to be happy that a home-gorwn prospect will don the "C" this year for the Rangers.
Marc Staal and Brad Richards were also named assistant captains. While some might be upset that Brandon Dubisnky wasn't named an assistant captain, John Tortorella knows and trusts Richards, and wants the proven leader to do just that this year.
A statement from Glen Sather after the jump. Official press release below.
Glen Sather spoke to Andrew Gross and the rest of the media, and made this statement:
"Ryan Callahan embodies all the leadership qualities we seek from our Captain," GM Glen Sather said in a statement. "He leads by example with courage and tireless work ethic on and off the ice, which is why he is so deserving of this honor."
Here is the official New York Rangers press release:
RYAN CALLAHAN NAMED 26th RANGERS CAPTAIN
New York, September 12, 2011 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Ryan Callahan has been named the 26th captain in franchise history. Brad Richards will join Marc Staal as the club's two alternate captains.
"Ryan Callahan embodies all the leadership qualities we seek from our Captain," Sather said. "He leads by example with courage and a tireless work ethic on and off the ice, which is why he is so deserving of this honor."
Callahan, 26, has served as a Rangers Alternate Captain for the last two seasons after being named to the post on October 2, 2009. He captured a silver medal with Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, and is a two-time Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award winner (2008-09 and 2009-10). Last season, Callahan captured the Players' Player Award, as voted by his teammates, and the John Halligan Good Guy Award, selected by the NY chapter of the PHWA in recognition of cooperation with the media.
Entering his fifth season in the NHL, Callahan was originally selected as the Rangers' fourth round choice, 127th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He has registered 76 goals and 68 assists for 144 points, along with 179 penalty minutes in 284 career regular season games. Callahan has reached the 40-point plateau and surpassed the 20-goal mark in two of the last three seasons, and has recorded 200-plus hits in each of the last three seasons. The Rochester, New York native enjoyed his most productive season in 2010-11, establishing career-highs in goals (23), assists (25) and points (48) despite missing 22 games due to injury. He tallied his first career hat trick with four goals and a career-high five points on March 6 vs. Philadelphia, and notched his first career penalty shot goal on October 30 at Toronto. On October 23, Callahan registered his 100th career point with an assist on the game-winning goal at Boston. Callahan made his NHL debut on December 1, 2006 at Buffalo, and tallied his first career NHL point with a two-goal performance on March 17, 2007 vs. Boston.

Good choices
Someone commented yesterday that this selection would be good also because Cally and Richards won’t likely be linemates and we’ll have that player rep on the ice more.
Most likely it came down to the last A between Dubi and Richards. Dubinsky has shown leader qualities, sticking up for teammates, busting his ass, involved with many important goals and facing the media. I just hope he doesn’t get frustrated at not receiving a letter, and that he continues to lead by example regardless.
Richards has had this role before and experience, with and without Tortorella. Can’t find any fault for his selection beyond being new to the club. He’d have expectations to produce and lead in any case.
hopefully he's a lot better then the last captain
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

then immediately handing it to Hank lol

Solid decision.
I understand why Richards was given the “A”. He is here for the long-term and the guy exudes poise and leadership. If Richards wasn’t on the roster I am sure that the other “A” would be stitched on Dubi’s chest. Dubinsky is a very passionate, impulsive player on the ice. I am not sure if that is the way he is off the ice but I can understand why he is found wanting compared to the steady and reliable Staal, the heart and determination of Callahan, and the experience and poise of Richards.
This is Ryan Callahan’s team now. I expect him to embrace the new role and lead by example with every shift, hit, blocked, shot, and hustle to beat out an icing. The new identity of the team is one of character, hard-work, and… though I hate to say it… jam.
Callahan is the perfect captain for this team. I am thrilled about the decision. Let’s get this season started! Watching the Traverse City games has me itching at my veins for my next hockey fix.

Re: Richards
There was also the precedent set by Torts 2 years ago when he gave Prospal one of the A’s. Veteran player and someone that he’s already familiar with. Not to mention he’s had leadership roles on his previous two teams.
And Richards is going to be a focal point of this team for the next several years. I don’t necessarily believe that letters motivate players to do play better. I do think they can carry an extra burden, but again he’s played this role before and I’m going to give Torts the benefit of the doubt about how well he expects his number one center to respond to such a designation.

This guy sound familiar?
From Puck Daddy’s post on the Cally announcement:
frank 1 hour ago Report Abuse Ignoring both Dubinsky & Girardi who always stand up for their team mates thru
thick and thin-except maybe the Carcillo/Gaborik incident.
However, Staal was on the ice too during the Gaborik/Carcillo fight and stayed
totally away from the fisticuffs-as he always does.
Please note that after the fight Dubinsky said something to Carcillo that caused
Carcillo to get an unsportsmanlike penalty in addition to his fighting major.
Dubinsky is also a great interview, veryu well spoken, & knowledgeable.

Captain Cally! :)
With the official and exciting announcement Monday of Ryan Callahan being named the newest Ranger Captain by Coach John Tortorella, here is an introduction that I think would be most appropriate for the public address announcer to use when introducing Ryan to the Garden faithful before the Rangers’ 2011-12 season home opener at the newly-renovated Madison Square Garden on October 27, 2011 against a fellow Original 6 team, the Toronto Male Leafs:
Dateline: “The World’s Most Famous Arena”, 10/27/11: "He’s won the Steven McDonald Award twice for going “above and beyond the call of duty.” He’s won a sliver medal as a US Olympian. He’s won the John Halligan Good Guy Award. He scored what many consider to be the most glorious GWG of the year in OT agst the Penguins last season thanks to an outstanding assist by his buddy, Brandon Dubinsky. He’s won the Rangers’ Players’ Player award and fearlessly dove in front of a Zdeno Chara 100mph+ slap shot. And according to Coach John Tortorella, “He personifies EXACTLY what it means to be a NY Ranger”….Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome…the Rangers’ newest and 26th Captain in the history of our beloved and storied 4-time Cup-winning, Original 6 franchise. #24, Ryyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaan Callahan!" :)
“Congratulations!” again to Ryan & Let’s Go Rangers! :)
