2011 New York Rangers Training Camp News: Staal Plot Thickens

NEW YORK NY - JANUARY 05: Marc Staal #18 of the New York Rangers skates against his brother Eric Staal #12 of the Carolina Hurricanes at Madison Square Garden on January 5 2011 in New York City. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Just as it started to get a little brighter, regarding Marc Staal's injury, the clouds flew over once again. Marc Staal was not present during the after scrimmage workouts, earlier this afternoon. It appears that Staal arrived not feeling to well, and Tortorella sent him home as a precaution.

Obviously the lingering effects of the concussion are still present, and the Rangers are taking every sort of precaution. Tortorella said they will have to take it day by day, to assess his condition. He also stated that Staal did not need any pre-season games to get ready for the season opener in Stockholm.

According to Torts, the Rangers have continuously been searching for a veteran defenseman. Although, apparently the search began even before Staal's setback. The defenseman could either come via trade, or on a tryout basis. While another defenseman would be nice, we still have plenty of young talent to fill the roles, like Del Zotto or Valentenko.

We will keep you guys up to date on what happens with Staal. For right now, the signs are not looking so good. Aside from that, the lines for Wednesday's pre-season game will be released after tomorrow's practice.

I'd like to see them bring in a vet dman

I have a bad feeling that this Staal thing may linger. Shaonne Morrison is on the trade block after a bad year, but his cap hit is too big for the Rangers unless they bury Avery in Hartford. Paul Mara is out ther. but he’s on his last legs.

I saw earlier that we could potentially snag Carl Gunnarsson from Toronto. Weird but, it wouldn’t be terrible.

I honestly have no clue, I just posted what I saw. It seems very illogical, but you never know what could happen.

by Bryan Winters on Sep 19, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

WHY?

why the hell would we give up a very promising D Man in Valentenko for a rental player Gunnarson…makes NO SENSE!

by Eric Bure on Sep 19, 2011 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He's not really a rental

I was just throwing names out there. I don;‘t think the Leafs will trade him anyway as he’s pretty young and promising too.

When should we all start worrying?

I wouldn’t begin to worry unless he’s out of the season opener… these are meaningless games he’s missing… better these than games where two points are on the line.

by Kritikal on Sep 19, 2011 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone chill the fuck out.. Slats will do the right thing.

The team needs to move forward NOT EXPECTING STAAL to play this year. First step is to assess what we have internally and look at cap. To bring in a 2nd pair talent I think salary will have to be moved. You take a look thru preseason, if the answer isn’t here you over pay and make move now.

However, I’m of the mind set you give the young guys every chance to fill in. Take another pulse check at 10 game marker..re-evaluate.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 19, 2011 6:33 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

You need to chill out as well Gabby...

Proceed as thought he won’t play this season? Probably a little drastic….kind of like those you are telling to chill the f out.

Stall will be fine and would be playing if it were March. Better to take the time now than risk losing time later.

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Knowing the importance of Staal and attention this issue gets today, you can’t expect to have him.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 19, 2011 8:13 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

by your logic you want the rangers to make a trade to get a 1 D-man… staal’s being held out of training camp scrimmages and probably preseason, whats the difference if he left today? He’s been cleared and they are just taking every precaution as it’s pre-season… I’d be perfectly fine with Sauer or McDonagh taking his spot for the time being… They did it last season when he missed 3-4 games… i’m not worried… if it’s mid november and he’s not cleared to play then start to worry, but for now we are 4 days into training camp and game 1 isn’t until the 8th of october… chill out…

Obviously you can’t read. I clearly stated they should get a 2nd pair dman if the kids don’t look ready after 10 games of regular season. However, if MDZ and Erixon falter very badly in camp you can’t rule out a move.

Do you really believe this “precautionary” shit. The hit occurred 6 months ago. There’s obviously an issue here.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 19, 2011 10:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I in-fact I can read and i said by your logic, and did not quote… your logic based on the worst case scenario (Staal Retires…. Not happening) implies that we make a move to acquire a top defensive player, to make a move for a 2nd pair guy is dumb in and of itself, especially with the defensive depth that the rangers have, yes they may be unproven, but MDZ has played a full NHL season, Erixon has been a respectable defenseman in the SEL… why trade a guy like Valentanko in the middle of Training Camp for a 2nd Pairing dman?

If anything our pairings look like this

McDonagh/Girardi
Erixon/Sauer
Eminger/MDZ
with valentanko as our 7th if we keep a 7th…

as far as believing precautionary… it happened 6 months ago, he sat out passed tests and played… then al the sudden after not playing NHL games he now has symptoms so severe that he will not play this year… I don’t buy that…

the sky is not falling, the rangers have the depth to sustain his loss for an extended period of time…

Hard to believe....

Erixon, MDZ and Eminger all step up and are ready. I agree they get first crack, but Torts and Slats will be realists about this.
.
The Staal situation is serious.

All I’ve seen was that he “Wasn’t feeling well”, has it been confirmed that its related to the concussions, and not just a sniffle?

Mark Messier Helmet

Just thought I had to throw out the thought.
I’ve read about the new helmet, if it is that good in protecting players. Then why not make it mandatory? Or have Reebok come up with something similar?
Maybe take a look at equipement, I don’t know …just a thought…

by RangerViking on Sep 20, 2011 12:29 AM EDT reply actions

Drew Doughty may be available ….just saying. I think the Rangers will be fine for our cup run. Just hope Staal feels better soon. We all talked about our depth we have at defense, and now everyone is worried? Everyone here must have known we would not make it through the season without any injuries. I think, if necessary, we can sit out Staal the beginning of the season without any worries. Erixon is ready. Eminger can and will step up. I have seen some posts on here saying Emi is garbage, but that is far from the truth. If he is needed, he will surprise you. There are a few sources stating he is one of the better players on the ice during this camp. Then we can look to MDZ, if he is ready. VTank if he is ready. What about Parlett? I am sure if given the chance, one of them will step up and do what is necessary. MDZ does have 100 NHL games under his belt. We also have Brendan Bell, who has 100 NHL games and about 370 AHL games under his belt. He may not break records, but he has experience and is serviceable. We can make it through, no problems. We may be surprised by who is called upon to take up for the absence of Staal, and how well they do. With one player out(possibly, possibly not), there goes our depth? I think not.
Can’t wait to see WW shut some people up. That whole first line is going to light up the lamp. Then DubiAACally are going to put up the 90 goals I predict. Dare to dream or drink, either way I win. Seriously, no worries. We have a roller coaster season ahead of us.
Would it really be any fun if we began and ended camp saying everyone played great and everyone is healthy? This is just typical Rangers.
