New York Rangers Analysis: Torts Still Looking to Infuse Youth
We've talked before about how the New York Rangers have never committed to a complete rebuild with their team, but instead have went down the path of what I like to call a "modified" rebuild by slowly infusing more youth into the lineup each year. In 2009-10 it was Michael Del Zotto and Artem Anisimov, then in 2010-11 it was MichaelSauer, Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan and Mats Zuccarello (sort of). Now head coach John Tortorella wishes to introduce a few more youngsters to the NHL at some point during this season.
"We have to continue to try to infuse more youth into our lineup," Tortorella said. "During the summer we went in a direction that got a couple of veteran guys, I think that’s where we are in our process after going with a really young team, still a young team. We added some people at the other end who can mentor. But you can’t forget about back-filling with youth and growing that way. There are spots open and there’s going to be competition along the way because we want to continue to get young guys in there. So it’s a good situation for them. They have to earn it. There’s a number of kids out there that are going to vie for a spot depending on how they play. I would be (disappointed if none made it) because it’s important for our organization to keep on trying to grow from within. But I’m not going to force feed it, either." - JohnTortorella to Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants
The biggest opportunity for any rookies to break into the NHL with the Rangers this year lies on defense. The first four spots are more or less set-in-stone, but the third pairing is wide open and up for grabs. Tim Erixon is obviously the top candidate to crack the lineup as a rookie this year, and he already is well on his way to capturing a spot on the third defensive pairing based on his performance in the Traverse City tournament and so far in training camp.
We haven't even begun preseason yet, but I am fairly confident that Erixon will be in the opening night lineup. He's confident, he has poise and he brings something to the team that they don't have with any of their other defensemen right now - a threatening shot from the point.
But Erixon only makes one rookie for the year, and by the sound of it, Tortorella has plans to call up more than that by the season's end. Where else in the lineup could we possibly see a rookie brought up permanently this season?
The only spot I could think of is on the third line wing. However, that would likely mean beating out Sean Avery for the spot in camp. Avery is determined to make the team this year and contribute more than he has in the past. That was evident by the immaculate physical shape he came to camp in.
A player like Christian Thomas, Ryan Bourque or Carl Hagelin could give Sean a run for his money, though. All three players have experience in either junior hockey or college hockey and were also standouts in last week's Traverse City prospects tournament. I've already stated that Thomas is my darkhorse to make the club out of camp this year, and if there is a guy that could potentially oust Avery, it's going to be him.
You can't count out Mats Zuccarello, either. On Sunday I wrote an article on my site about Zuccarello and the dogfight that he is currently in for a roster spot. Ironically enough, he spoke about that exact topic with the media later that same day...
Zuccarello probably has a better chance of making the team than any of the other youngsters simply because he proved he can play at the NHL level for half of a season last year. He and the coaching staff now know what is expected of one another, but it's crucial he shows improvements from last year in the scrimmages and during preseason."I’ve got to think in my head I’ve got a good chance, otherwise I’m wasting my time here," Zuccarello said. "I just have to stay positive and think I’m good enough for the team and we’ll see what happens.
The inter-squad scrimmages that started up on Sunday and will continue this week will be telling for the future of all of these kids. Why? Because Tortorella is using the scrimmages as a way to determine which prospects will get a look during preseason action on Wednesday and beyond then if they perform to his liking. So these scrimmages are not to be taken lightly - they will have a major impact when all is said and done.
With all of that said, Tortorella made it clear that he will not be forcing anyone. The only way a rookie will be infused into the lineup this season is if they show that they are absolutely 100-percent ready to make the jump.

I see Erixon playing 3rd pair, MZA on the 3rd line, and Hagelin being a mid season/injury call up. I think Avery’s days are numbered unless he really shows something in camp. Can’t see MDZ, Valtank, or Kundratek replacing Staal’s roster spot. It will be a vet or even Bell for that matter. Staal’s health issues almost all but assures that Parlett’s chances of making the team are very slim as well. They need a vet to take Staal’s roster spot (not his place on the 1st pair though). I assume McD would move up to 1st pair.

Thank god I can do this on the train. Before I would stare out the window and visualize myself setting fire to the houses I would pass out of resentment towards those still sleeping occupants…not that I would ever do it.
The only exception would be the houses I see in Elizabeth and Newark, the pain to those people is their current lives. I wouldn’t touch that at all.

I think Avery/EC/MZA are the only forwards at risk
Hagelin/Weise/Newbury would be top 3 candidates. If Torts is done with Avery and EC and they carry one extra forward, someone is making it. Probably Weise or Newbury to allow Hagelin top minutes in CT.
The lines below are what they had yesterday (assuming Prust is healthy).
Wolski/Richards/Gabby
Dubinsky/Stepan/Callahan
Rupp/Anisimov/MZA
Feds/Boyle/Prust
Extra forward: ?

Swap Anisimov and Stepan, who hasn’t been clicking with the Pack in scrimmages. I think Avery gets the benefit of being the extra forward, MZA’s spot is at risk of rookie replacement, and EC isn’t seen unless there are multiple injuries.
I also fully expect Staal to play on opening day, despite your doom and gloom posts!
Stepan is the better center right now (despite face off problems). Reports differed about whether he did or didn’t click with Dubi and Cally.
I hope Staal is ready to go. But I’m not expecting it.

Meh..that’s opinion. Anisimov was just as productive against much harder competition. Much like you’re talking people off the Erixon bandwagon, I’m more than happy to try to temper the expectations on Stepan.

Strongly disagree.
AA has put up better numbers against better competition, and the face off problems are definitely an issue with Stepan.
I like Stepan, but at this point he isn’t better than AA. Also, the PACK line shouldn’t be broken up.
AA is on the same path statistically as Dubi and Cally, where Stepan isn’t there yet. Step could easily go the route of Cogliano. I hope not, but its possible.

I disagree
I think he’s the favorite for a spot on the third line and will get some pp time.

Disagree, especially if he’s with Stepan on the 3rd line. They wouldn’t be used as 3rd line checkers, it’d be a pretty offense-focused line, much as they were used last year.

Who I want to see – Rupp (keep FBP together)
Who we will see, I’m not sure.
If Wolski wins the LW1 spot, I’d guess it’s Feds-Stepan-MZA, with Rupp-Boyle-Prust.

Newbury is not a candidate…you get a look for the sake of looking, but he is not a candidate. Hagelin—definitely, Weise—no question…MZA will gets replaced and his contract goes to CT.
Not only should you swap Anisimov and Stepan, you can also swap Wolski, Boyle and Rupp to the third line LW (Wolski), third line center (Boyle) and fourth line center (Rupp). I said this over two months ago…albeit that Wolski will get looks there for now, the first line left wing will eventually go to Stepan. Step proved last season that his offensive instincts are primed to be a 25-goal scorer in this league. He scored primarily as a third line center last season, creating most of his own chances off of nice passes more often than not. With a pure passer like Richards, he can easily watch those numbers and ice time rise.
As for extra forward…Weise, Hagelin, Bourque all can be here, and the one-year contracts can all be scratched.

Using Bourque or Hagelin as a extra forward is a waste
either they play on a nightly basis or go play top minutes in Hartford.

Considering the need to clarify this roster, neither one would sit for long, anyway. So, saying they’ll sit now can mean having spots on a forward line before long with the right trade, buyout, or demotion.

Fun watching some preseason hockey last night, even if it was Ottawa vs. the Leafs.
Almost certainly we’ll see some more youth on the blueline whether it is in the form of Erixon or Del Zotto or both. I wouldn’t be surprised if a youngster challenged for a roster spot this training camp and preseason but the club doesn’t necessarily need a kid to step up make the big club just yet… though next year I wouldn’t be surprised to see several more kids getting a real shot at the regular season roster.
Should be exciting to see where guys like Avery, Wolski, Christensen, Zuke, Thomas, Hagelin, and Ryan Bourque end up. Might very well end up having a young kid in the lineup at the expense of someone like Aves or Zuke.
So long as we put the best possible team on the ice I am open to further infusing some youth.
I can’t wait for the first preseason game for the Blueshirts. Hockey baby!

Yeah next year we’ll probably see 2 additional faces. Figure EC and Avery will not be signed, but I do not have them on my starting line-up this year anyway. Prust will be resigned. Wolski, all depends on his performance but would be for less money. Assuming he is not back, his spot, Feds spot, and MZA could all be open. With a ton of cap space, perhaps a superstar LW and 2 rookies could make it.
Bring in Semin and Kreider.
Dump Girardi and let Avery/Wolski/MZA walk.

Dubinsky Richards Gaborik
Semin Anisimov Callahan
Hagelin Stepan Thomas
Weise Boyle Prust
yeah!

Line-up that I want..
Wolski Richards Gaborik (skilled first line vs. easy competition)
Dubinsky Anisimov Callahan (play against the other teams top line)
Rupp/Avery Stepan MZA (decently skilled line playing against easier competition)
Fedetenko Boyle Prust (checking and defensive line)
Avery/Rupp I think will be the extra forward.

I want Feds Boyle Prust together.
I can trust that line in D. I can’t trust Rupp on D. Defeats the purpose for me personally.

Rupp is pretty dependable defensively, so on that I disagree. I would have no problem putting Rupp at center on that fourth line, and moving Boyle onto the third line.

He really isn’t dependable defensively whatsoever. He’s a good checker though, just not good at defense which would defeat the purpose of having him with Boyle and Prust.
Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.
The average shift of a 4th line player is right around 18 seconds. Most of the time 4th lines are used as energy lines (bulk to “scare” the top lines into submission, to regain momentum following offensive attacks). This we all know Prust is good at; and so is Rupp. I liken him to the way the Rangers once used Sandy McCarthy…just wind him up and let him go.

I see Bourque coming up and taking someone spot in the second half
much like Cally did in ’06-07.

+1
I expect both Bourque and Hagelin to be on the team at some point during the year as injury replacements. Personally, I think Bourque is the better prospect, in part because he is 2 years younger and I thought he was impressive at the WJC, but if both do well, so much the better.
