2011 New York Rangers Training Camp: Tuesday's Early Morning Scrimmage

Today's scrimmage consisted of Henrik Lundqvist's White team, facing off against the Green team and Marty Biron. The white lines were as follows, Michael St. Croix - Matt Rust - Scott Tanski, Mike Rupp - Brian Boyle - Dale Weise, Jason Wilson - Kris Newbury - Collin Bowman

Along with the lines for team green, Callahan - Anisimov - Dubinsky, Sean Avery, John Mitchell, JT Miller, Andrew Yogan, Kale Kerbashian, Jordan Hickmott. Artem Anisimov and the "pack line" gave Green an early 1-0 lead. It was a pretty quiet game until we reached the second period.

Right off the bat, Kris Newbury and Samuel Noreau dropped the gloves after a scrum in front of Lundqvist. Almost instantly after, Avery and Wilson decided to drop them as well. According to multiple beat rights, Wilson got the upper hand on Avery.

Follow after the jump for more.

Marty Biron was pulled halfway through the game, and Jason Missiaen replaced him. Later on in the second period, Mike Rupp roofed a penalty shot over the shoulder of Missiaen , to tie the game at 1-1. Michael St. Croix cashed in on a nice pass from Matt Rust, giving White a 2-1 lead late in the game. Both Dubinsky and Girardi had great opportunities in the final 10 seconds of the game, but Lundqvist turned away both.

White went on to win their third straight game, and give them a 3-0 record thus far.  Also, check out our latest news story about the Rangers having an interest in defenseman Paul Mara.

I can’t comprehend the point of fighting during team scrimmages. If the young guys feel the need to prove themselves & show their toughness, do it during the pre-season. How does punching your teammates in the face help the team in any capacity?

Pierre McGuire needs to go away.

“Defending a teammate” or “setting the tone” come to mind… and neither of those seem like they’d have any place during an inter-squad scrimmage game with your linemates…

Pierre McGuire needs to go away.

i don't think guys have a problem

fighting guys who are competing for the same job—you’ll notice that all the guys that fought are vying for similar roles

Avery is making 4 million a year… does he really need to be fighting in a ‘meaningless’ scrimmage game against his own teammates? What positive effect does this have on Avery other than possibly hurting himself?

I don’t think fighting teammates is going to help him make the roster.

while a agree with you

We all know not everything Avery does is logical. Also, he really isn’t fighting his teammate. The reason he fought him, imho, is they never become teammates.

Also, guys fight all the time in camp, agree with it or not.

I’m sure they go easy on each other.

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Besides roofing the penalty shot

I haven’t heard much about Rupp. (Perhaps I’ve missed it). But how has he looked?

Good to see St. Croix get a goal

I have hopes that he could become a legitimate NHL scorer in a few years. How did he do at Traverse, by the way?

by LJR on Sep 20, 2011 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

He played okay. Certainly not bad, but didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

He made a few heads up plays here and there. It is his first tourney, consisting of mostly prospects that have been in their respective systems for multiple years. How he does in the tournament next year will be a better gauge of his potential.
