New York Rangers News: Roster For First Preseason Game Announced; Staal, Sauer and Hagelin Update
Hey guys, as you know tomorrow the big boys head up to Albany to play their first preseason game against the Devils and a little while ago the Ranger beat writers have been tweeting the roster for the game.
FORWARDS:
Brandon Dubinsky, Sean Avery , Artem Anisimov, Carl Hagelin, Erik Christensen, Christian Thomas, Dale Weise, Ryan Bourque, John Mitchell, Andre Deveaux.
DEFENSEMEN:
Michael Del Zotto, Dylan McIlrath, Dan Girardi, Brendan Bell, Steve Eminger, Tim Erixon
GOALTENDING:
Kind of surprised Henrik is making the trip seeing as how he played an entire scrimmage game today but after the jump an update on all things Marc Staal, Mike Sauer and some analysis of Carl Hagelin.
To start things off, John Tortorella stated that nothing should be holding back Mike Sauer from playing in preseason. Sauer suffered from tendinitis a couple days back, and was sidelined for the time being. Both Staal and Sauer were on the ice following workouts, and both looked fine.Marc Staal was sent home yesterday after "not feeling well", but that seemed to change over night. Staal also skated without any problems, but the Rangers will most likely give him a lot of rest leading up to the season opener.
Tortorella also stated yesterday that they would like to infuse more youth into the lineup during the season. He noted that Carl Hagelin was one of the six players that they would take an extended look at, during preseason. Tortorella was very impressed with Hagelin's speed and skating ability, which is what earned him an extra look.
The other five most likely being, Ryan Bourque, Christian Thomas, Dylan McIlrath, Tim Erixon, and Brandon Bell. All of which will be on display for the first preseason games. The Rangers will be making their first cuts on Friday night, following the conclusion of the second game against New Jersey.
We will have an open game thread going up at 6:30 tomorrow evening. Be sure to be there!

They only released the players, no lines.

I suspect that Bourque will play with Dubi and AA
Avery’s been on a line with Mitchell in all of the scrimmages.
Message Being Sent
to Christensen and Avery. They’d better outplay the kids or they will start in Hartford.
Hagelin is going to dry hump the shit out of the ice tomorrow night.
He’s making this team. Torts wants him on the big club. It will happen, just as it was foretold in the good book.

Agreed, Hagelin & Erixon both potentially fill important needs & both will make the team.

Sweet!!
I live in Albany and I’ve got tickets for myself and 9 others. I’ve heard from a bunch of others that are going, too. It should be a good turnout, I hope they make it a regular thing!
I am excited to see some of the prospects [Thomas, Hagelin, Bourque, Erixon, McIlrath] as well as some favorites [Dubi, Henrik, MDZ].
Sweet, indeed. Have a great time Graves.

Is it true?!
Richards didn’t take part in laps because of groin soreness? Here we go
by XxC17xX on Sep 20, 2011 8:36 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
It is true, but it’s just soreness. They sat him out a precaution, not because he couldn’t skate. He’ll be fine.

you’re really jumping now?

Not jumping anywhere just rather not hear anything negative about him for a really long time. This is just something I prefer not to hear before the first game as a ranger

its nothing serious
just some stiffness from going from sitting around most of the summer to going into Torts’ rigorous conditioning and skating drills

you know what I mean
he could have been training but I don’t think a lot prepares you for Torts’ torture sessions

a lot of people are saying Carl Hagelin will definitely make the team. I would agree but there are just not enough roster spots. As far as Im concerned he would fill a similar spot to Feds, Rupp, Avery or EC. And two of those guys in my opinion don’t make the opening night roster, most likely Avery and EC. So I don’t see where people think he is going to fit in. Injury call up midseason most definitely but not opening night roster.
MZA?

Decent problem to have.
When Feds/Avery/Christensen and maybe Wolski are gone next year those kids (Hagelin, Thomas, Weise, etc) will get a real shot.

I totally agree, but I don’t its gonna happen this year for Hagelin like many are saying.

Anyone else think Hagelin is this years Stepan?
If so, who does he replace? I’m thinking Avery makes the team, Christensen might because of shootout abilities.
Either way, this is going to be a great preseason to watch.

Well Wolski and Richards are both very good at shootouts.

not to mention MZA
but the more i read, the more it seems like he is getting crowded out of a roster spot. I can see him being moved for a pick sometime soon.
Hagelin's too old to be this years Stepan
If by “this year’s Stepan” you mean a rookie forward who might crack the starting lineup out of camp and play on one of the top 3 lines, then Hagelin is probably the best bet. But if “this year’s Stepan” should also have comparable future growth potential, then it would have to come from one of the younger longer shots, like Thomas or Bourque.
Guess all he needed was a new environment.

I think he'll develop like Korpikoski
Maybe 30 points this year and then 40 next year. He’s still looks like a 20/20 guy at best. Luckily this team has not shortage of that. We needed him to be more 25-30/25.
If he turns out to be a best I won’t really mind. He’s in the Western Conference and I don’t want to se JD get axed if the team shits the bed.

An EN goal and a rebound tap-in, nothing special

but...
brendan bell is old (by NHL career standards)
how is adding an AHL-level 28 year old infusing youth? I don’t get it
To me...
The Staal concussion issue makes me think McIlrath may be necessary to apply the right depth on the blue line. As much as Staal is not known for scoring, he is known for his defense; and losing that could be a real problem. I know the rumors have been rampant about signing Mara, but let’s be honest…Mara IS NOT Staal. Mara could take the 5th or 6th spot at the point, but then you’re putting pressure (potentially) on Del Zotto or Erixon to play with someone who doesn’t defend as well. Eminger played well here, but I suspect he was brought in as window dressing.
I also feel Del Zotto may not make it. I don’t want to cast doubt, honestly, but MDZ pre-injury fell out of favor with Torts, and I just don’t feel he can recover to be an effective part of this team. With the Staal injury, he will need to be here. But when Staal returns, I think a package to move him along will be in order.

It would be harder to fall further out of favor with Torts than Sauer did in 2009
But Sauer made it back. MDZ can too.
I'd like to really see that for him...
on the whole, I think he’s a good kid with good skills.
