New York Rangers Pre-Season: Rangers Fall 2-1 In OT Against Devils

Tonight marked the start of the pre-season for both the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers. Both teams faced off in Albany, in a very fan filled arena. Henrik Lundqvist started in net for the Rangers, along with Keith Kinkaid in net for the Devils. In the first period, Petr Sykora put the Devils up 1-0, off a great feed by Adam Larsson.

Henrik Lundqvist stood tall for the Rangers in an eventful first two periods. Halfway through the second, Cam Talbot was sent in to finish off the game, and Jeff Frazee in for the Devils. Later on Andre Deveaux and David Clarkson dropped the mittens, both players got some good punches in, but Deveaux got the upper hand.

We started the third period, with the Devils still up 1-0. The Rangers had many chances to score all throughout the game, and hand a handful of chances in the third period. Dale Weise dropped the gloves with Brad Mills halfway in the second period, Weise had a the upper hand in the beginning, but lost it near the end. Shortly after,  Weise was able to put the Rangers on the board with a loose puck that squirmed to the front of the net. Weise had an excellent check in the corner that led to the goal, followed with a great centering feed by Anisimov.

Follow after the jump for more.

Star-divide

Cam Talbot had a very impressive performance in the second half of the game, included his incredible glove save on Petr Sykora. He absolutely robbed Ilya Kovalchuk with a glove save as well. With loads of chances for both teams, the game would have to be decided in overtime.

Just 45 seconds into overtime, Patrik Elias was able to redirect the puck past Talbot on a slick pass from Zach Parise. The goal was caused on a bad pass from Eminger that Weise fumbled in the slot, which led to the turnover. Overall it was a great game by the young Rangers squad to pull this game to overtime, they have a ton of potential.

The players that impressed me the most were Artem Anisimov, Brandon Dubinsky, Dale Weise, Dylan McIlrath, Ryan Bourque and Cam Talbot.

Ryan Bourque had his speed and grit on display once again tonight and he caused quite a few turnovers for the opposition. Both Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov were strong in the corners and protected the puck very well. Dale Weise also had a very physical game, along with his fight in the second period, and his goal to tie the game. Cam Talbot was simply amazing in net tonight, with multiple key saves, that kept the Rangers in the game.

Michael Del Zotto did not have the greatest of games, along with his turnovers once again. He tried multiple times to force passes, and as a result turned it over the puck multiple times.

The Rangers will face off against the Devils this coming Friday in New Jersey. We will have yet another open game thread, starting at 6:30. That game will also be on MSG.

Was at the game tonight. Obviously way too early for conclusions, but I’ll offer a few thoughts anyway (some of it echoes Bryan’s assessments)…..
1. Anisimov was clearly the best player on the ice, and deserves most of the credit for the goal. He looked uncontainable at times, and each time he was on the ice his presence was conspicuous.
2. Dubinsky had one shift where he seemed intent on doing something stupid (throwing the puck blindly around in his own zone), but otherwise was terrific. One play in the third particularly impressed me. He dug the puck out of the corner, made a crisp pass to the middle of the ice, slipped a check and took the return pass up the boards. The cameras might not have shown him once he made the first pass, but watching him, I could see the maturity. He’s growing into a smart, tough player.
3. On the other hand, Del Zotto was awful. Not so much for the idiotic turnovers, but for a general lack of physical presence. At one point he even shied away from a check in the Rangers zone, which led to a scoring chance for the Devils. Something is going on in this kid’s head, and he has to work it out.
4. McIlrath is a large individual. I hadn’t watched him in person until tonight, and even at his young age he is imposing. He’s still pretty awkward, and he falls down when he shouldn’t, but at times he looks like a menace. On two occasions he effortlessly plowed over a Devil.
5. Ryan Bourque is a player. He’s a gnat, he’s slippery in the corners, and defenders often do bunny-hops trying to keep up with him. His father was there, and the crowd gave him a nice ovation.

by Chris Teepe on Sep 21, 2011 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

I first spotted McIlrath at the far end of the ice as he skated in front of Lundqvist. I was like whoa big man there, must be McIlrath, sure enough it was. He had a strong game, responsible defensively, blocked some shots, threw a few good hits.

I spent the first period mostly trying to sort out who was wearing what number. Del Zotto was invisible except when he turned it over. Getting his pocket picked as he skated up ice was just lazy, really poor. Avery started strong but seemed to disappear.

Dubinsky and Anisimov showed some flashes, as expected. Good sign if they are linemates again. Miller was on with them for a strong shift, but he and Thomas and others didn’t seem to have much chemistry. Lots of the rookies were crowding each other and passing was pretty sloppy, which generated very few shots and scoring chances.

A few times I thought Hagelin was about to start flying, but hesitated and lost the opportunities.

Good crowd. All in all, can’t be too upset losing to 90% of the Devils starters with just a handful of ours. Hope they come back up next year!

It makes me happy when our players who are fighting for a fourth line spot, besides Arty and Duby, can bring most of the Devils opening lineup into overtime.

Side note Christiensen looks out of a job if he doesnt turn it on and keep it on all season, which he wont. I predict him going on the waiver wire sometime this year. Avery played smart this game but just because he wasnt stupid doesnt impress me or make me want to keep him up on the main squad instead of a kid.

Devils Side Larsson looked very mature and like a quality dman. Then he got man handled by Dale Weise and then we tied the game.

Good game I am so happy its hockey season again.

So long EC

We’ll miss you’re nifty shootout goals and the two periods every 15 games or so when you show off your innate skills. Hartford awaits.
MDZ – same as it ever was. Someone send out a search-and-rescue squad to try and recover his missing brain.
I’m happy for Weise, but I don’t see him making the team.
McIlrath and Miller – I’ll never question Gordie Clark again, even if he picks Daffy Duck in 2012.
Cam Fuckin Talbot. Who knew? Personally, I credit this website for his performance – obviously he read all the posts about him being a kitten-killer and took offense.

Couple of observationas:

1. Dubi and AA are ready to fuck shit up this year. The two of are monster below the circles.

2. I noticed McIlrath more than Erixon. Not to say Erixon didn’t have a good game. But McIlrath made a few more plays.

3. Bourque is 100% Scrappy Doo and didn’t look out of place.

4. Hagelin’s speed was great and PK performance was good. Moved the puck well in offensive zone, but had a few moments where he either forced a pass or turned it over.

5. Thomas didn’t look out of place. He played with some jam but much like Traverse is having trouble getting shots off and/or to the net.

6. Cam Tabot is the devil.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 22, 2011 5:18 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Have to agree with Gabby. I think Bourque makes it before the others. Dubi and AA looked great. Defense looked good, well mostly. B. Bell looks like he can play. Like I said, no worries. If we fielded another vet or two, we would have won the game. Our rooks played well. We are going to surprise some teams this year.

Dubi is turning into a monster power forward—he looked bigger/stronger/more athletic than ever before—look for 60 points out of him.

McIIlrath threw a few bodies, but he needs to learn how to stay on his feet. I’m happy with his play in his own zone, but he looks lost in transition.

Avery should be given a good shot of making this team—he looks supremely focused

MDZ is a bust

Dale Weiss got his ass handed to him, but he is turning heads. I’m impressed with his play so far, but its a long shot to make the team.

by Town on Sep 22, 2011 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Avery might have had a stay of execution but Weise made a big statement last night. Was very strong throughout the game. He wants a spot. MDZ? Geez. I said over and over: Hartford to start AND I really question whether he has the goods. Sorry, age isn’t the issue. It’s style of play and attitude. You can get away with a lot of loose play in juniors when you’re an offensive D but not here with the big boys. His skating is terrible. Bourque and Hagelin were very good. I agree that AA and Dubi will be monsters this year.

by Richter1994 on Sep 22, 2011 6:39 AM EDT reply actions

It’s sad that you might be right about MDZ…. It’s possible that he’s just not an NHL player. I’m not ready to give up on him yet, but he certainly isn’t ready yet and needs plenty of time to develop.

by Town on Sep 22, 2011 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

deal him now while there is a window of opportunity because any more continuous bad play and MDZ has zero value. teams will be able to sign him on the cheap if the Rangers don’t qualify him after this year.

by Richter1994 on Sep 22, 2011 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem or concern I have with him going back to AHL is that it might make things worse for him. He can get away more of that shit down there and it actually works due to the lesser level of competition which leads him to do it more often.

I am starting to understand Torts and that swagger comment. Kid tries all-star plays constantly instead of taking the safe route. His swagger says I’m an all-star and he might have the physical good for that, but his play and decision making say otherwise.

I imagine management must be at a loss too because he cant keep this up and stay with the big club and doesn’t seem to be getting it.

I agree with you but they can’t afford to have MDZ playing NHL games as once he hits 33 this year he cannot go down without clearing waivers. That’s why I think it’s a no-brainer he starts in Hartford and proves himself before coming up.

Who goes to Europe?

Per Brooks piece today, Tortorella said the team will take 31 players on the European trip including 18 forwards, 10 defensemen and three goaltenders.

My guess below (assuming Staal is healthy):

1. Gabby
2. Richie
3. Wolski
4. Stepan
5. Dubi
6. Cally
7. AA
8. Boyle
9. Prust
10. Feds
11. Avery
12. Rupp
13. EC
14. MZA
15. Hagelin
16. Weise
17. Bourque
18. Thomas, Miller or Yogan

19. Staal
20. Girardi
21. McD
22. Sauer
23. Erixon
24. Eminger
25. MDZ
26. Kundratek
27. McIlrath
28. V Tank

29. Henrik
30. Biron

Eminger has a good chance to be in that mix and for 1 of the 7 final places due to his experience in NHL and with Torts.

No, I get that, Eminger’s spot on the team is pretty secure I think, although his role may not be.

I’m saying that they’re obviously bringing depth with them to Europe, but I don’t think Tortorella’s going to go overseas with the presumed top 7 (No. 19-25 on the list) and 3 guys without NHL experience. I think they’ll bring Bell to have someone that has actually played at the NHL level standing by.

Can’t wait to see Bourque and Hagelin on ice that isn’t so crappy, several people commented how slow it was.

by BigB22 on Sep 22, 2011 8:04 AM EDT reply actions

I’m really liking Bourque, he seems close to ready if not ready.

McColgan you could tell was trying to make an impression with his effort on a number of plays, I’m glad we took a chance on him.

Hagelin seemed a bit jittery, he’d have a few good things in a row then cough it up or nOt read the play. Didn’t really get to see him get his wheels going.

McIlwrath looked better in that game then he did in Traverse, to me. Knocking down Boulton effortlessly put a bit of a target on him early on but he showed some maturity. Got his stick in the way on a few good Artois. When he “comes into his own” he should be a beast.

The more I see JT Miller the more I like him. He had several nice passes and you could see him reading where the D was going and where his teammates would be, his vision is definitely good.

I tried paying attention to erixon, but he was hard to notice. He had a nice shot on the first PP I think.

Oh and can we PLEASE get a new PP coach, that was upsetting to watch even with just rookies.

MDZ is done.

I don’t take too much from results, but I’m encouraged the Ranger kids played so well against the Devils top talent. I still wanna kick Don Maloney in the balls every time I see Zack Parise do something amazing – which is pretty much every shift.

Hate trying to keep track of all the crazy pre-season high uniform numbers. And Sam “I have an interesting story to tell” Rosen is no help. I was screaming at the TV last night for him to STFU and call the game. McIlrath had a huge hit in the corner, the crowd went wild, but Rosen was so deep in a mind-numbing diatribe he never even mentioned it. Glad I don’t have a twitter account, or the broadcast request to tweet a question for the announcers would have gotten me banned.

Had to rewind two or three clips where Hagelin turned on the jets, I thought it was an optical delusion. Just incredible.

Ryan Bourque is ready for the NHL. Weise made a great case for a much closer look, you don’t add eight pounds of muscle without some very hard work.

MDZ

I spent a good part of the off season asking for the Rangers to giveMDZ some time to mature and that trading him could be a big mistake. Now, I didn’t see last nites game, so this is all opinion, but if this is what he learned in Hartford, perhaps he’s going to be one of the many superbly talented kids that just can’t cut it in the bigs.
Granted, he’ll make mistakes, but, his biggest failing to date is forcing poor breakout passes. If half a season in Hartford didn’t cure that problem, then I have to re-evaluate his ability to learn how to play at at the NHL level. There are many things he’ll have to learn, and judging by how long it’s taking to learn just ONE facet of the NHL game, I’m beginning to have concerns about his accomplishments ever matching his potential.
That would be a shame for both MDZ and the Rangers.

There’s varying rates of growth in terms of production and increased ice time, but a lot of these guys didn’t really get their careers into full gear until at least the 3rd year if not later.

Even if Erixon seems more mature and more responsible there’s still the fact of the matter that Eminger isn’t exactly going to have a secure spot on the team the entire season. This is certainly an important year for Del Zotto but proclaim him a bust after a step backwards last year (when even through his first season he should have been probably sent down the HFD) is still umping the gun IMO.

The most notable was John Carlson, who I know a few people had wanted at the time.

While Carlson is more polished

they are basically the same player with DZ having more offensive upside

Carlson’s light years ahead of MDZ’s development right now.

I too am starting to lose faith in MDZ, two years ago we though we had two juggernaut Offensive Dmen in Gilroy and MDZ, now one is gone and the other just plain old sucks at this point….oh how much can change in two years.
