New York Rangers Pre-season: A Look Ahead To Friday; Staal Update
The Rangers will hit the ice for their second pre-season game of the season, against the New Jersey Devils. Last night, they also faced off against the Devils, but unfortunately lost in overtime. Last night's line-up was VERY young, compared to the Devils line-up.
Tomorrow night, we should definitely get a look at most of our starters, like Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik. Along with them, Carl Hagelin, Dale Weise, Brendan Bell, Michael Del Zotto and Tim Erixon will be getting another look after last night's performance.
Tomorrow's lines look as follows:
Forwards:
Brian Boyle, Ryan Callahan, Ruslan Fedotenko, Marian Gaborik, Carl Hagelin, Kris Newbury, Brad Richards, Mike Rupp, Derek Stepan, Dale Weise, Wojtek Wolski, Mats Zuccarello
Defensemen:
Brendan Bell, Michael Del Zotto, Tim Erixon, Ryan McDonagh, Mike Sauer, Pavel Valentenko
Goalies:
Follow after the jump for more and an update on Marc Staal
The Rangers also tweeted today that one of the young forwards, earned himself a spot in the European pre-season games. My guesses would have to be either Dale Weise or Carl Hagelin, they both had good games last night. As you probably noticed, both Brad Richards and Mike Rupp will be making their unofficial Rangers debuts tomorrow night. Also look for Brian Boyle to be matched up tomorrow with both Gaborik and Richards, as Tortorella wants to give him a shot up there as well.
There was almost a scare today as Marc Staal was not present at practice yet again. Although, Staal was at a doctors appointment seeing a specialist, that was conflicting with practice. Close call there, but all is well with Staal so far.
Be sure to join us tomorrow night in our open game thread, it should be a good one!

Probably Weise
If any young forward earned a trip to Europe just off yesterday’s game, it’s probably Weise, with a goal and a fight. Although I wouldn’t necessarily call his play “spectacular” and there was a costly giveaway.
If it wasn’t Weise it was more likely Bourque than Hagelin, since Bourque outplayed Hagelin both last night and at Traverse. And even Bourque was not “spectacular” yesterday.
Nobody earned shit last night
Some played better than others but it’s still to early to speculate, even Torts said not to get too high/low on one game.

I meant roster spot for opener.

Bourque over Hagelin for sure
Hagelin has legit speed and def has the skill but as for being ready or giving him a shot off of last nights performance, no way. Bourque was hands down the best ‘kid’ outside of Weise. I was hoping to see Bourque play with dubi and AA for a shift but I don’t recall that line combo.
I think hagelin has more potential to be a scorer in the nhl but currently Bourque is quiet a few steps ahead.

Weise was likely going already anyway, I don’t think he was the add. Same for Bourque and Hagelin, I think they were both already going.
My money is on JT Miller being the new addition.

Kundratek not on the roster for either of the 1st two preseason games
I don’t think that bodes well for his chances to make the team out of camp, or even to Europe.
Same for Niemi. I would guess.

Colored me shocked. Niemi is terrible.

They are (were) both playing in the Rangers / Devs. prospect game today.
Anybody know how it went?

4-3 Rangers right now. Bourque (2), Thomas and Miller with the goals.

Looking ahead to Monday against the Flyers, at least we won’t have to look at Jody Shelley’s ugly face. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=589450&navid=DL|NHL|home

Shelley and Leblond got spanked. Shanahan making an early statement. Shelley got spanked twice, as Rosehill made him bleed.

How many games will each miss?
by nhl_legendz on Sep 22, 2011 10:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Shelley will miss the rest of pre-season plus the first 5 regular season games. Leblond got 4 pre-sason games and one regular season.

To clarify, Rangers said 19 forwards are going to Europe after last night.
Thats the take away, sloppy reporting. But we’ll look the other way for now.

hahaah Gabby.......
…………where were we when each of us was suggesting Boyle on that line?

Boyle-Richards-Gaborik
Damn that’s a pretty sick line. With Boyle’s big body and quick reflexes I can totally see that working out.
by XxC17xX on Sep 22, 2011 11:17 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
I like the idea in that it gives that line a big, forechecking body that should also see the front of the net on the power-play. Whether it sticks or not is a big question, but it will get Boyle off the 4th/‘checking’ line into a top-role with more quality ice-time.

That also lets Wolski play on Stepan's line
giving Stepan someone with legitimate scoring potential to pass to.
Well well well.......
…………Torts is giving Brian Boyle a look on the top line. Yours truly tried cramming this concept down everyone’s throats over the summer, and when it wasn’t simply ignored, I was informed that this was an outlandish idea.
I shouldn’t gloat unless he actually sticks on Richards’ line, I realize that…but I can’t help but want to say ‘I told you so’ when the head coach looks like he’s going to at least try it out in pre-season.
Its the little things that get me through the day lol
good foresight
but with Torts, almost every top 6 forward will probably get a shot there at some point lol (hell, even bottom 6)
Yea it’s sorta like predicting Hank as our starting goalie.

Rangers messing with you guys
Boyle is going to get a look, Wolski is going to get a look, Stepan is going to get a look, Dubinsky is going to get a look and if you are a forward with a pulse then odds are you too will get a look on the LW for Richards and Gaborik.
Are you guys forgetting who is coaching the Rangers? The bigger story should be anyone who gets to play more than a game or two on the top line.
Not trying to bust anyone chops but Tortorella never keeps line combos together for long anyway.
As for the young player who earned a trip to Europe last night, it was John Mitchell sorry guys but the Rangers are really messing with you folks,
BTW Kundratek and Niemi are both playing in a closed to the public game against the Devil prospects at 1PM, Have no idea why they are not allowing people to watch as to me the idea of an all prospects vs prospects game sounds good.

QUESTION
last season Gabby got the puck a few times and still couldn’t hit the back of the net. lets say hypothetical that Richards DOES open up more chances for Gabs to get the puck this year and they DO click. What if Gabs still can’t hit the back of the net……then what

Gaborik
I really am not worried about Gaborik finding his game again this year, with or without Brad Richards. A player with that much talent, who has consistenly put up the kind of number he has (when healthy) doesn’t jus tlose it in one season. Even the great Alex Ovechkin had a down year last year. It happens. It’s not like he’s one hit wonder Johnathon Cheechoo who went from 50 goal scorer to borderline AHL player over night. I dont worry much about Gaborik…
by Peter North Stars on Sep 23, 2011 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions
You gotta remember, Cheechoo had Jumbo Joe feeding him the puck the season he hit 50… Who has Gaborik had his entire career? :P
That proves the point even further if thats what you were getting at….
He was doing all this with no stud center. I highly doubt he just lost it…

Still no MZA
This does not bode well for the hobbit. I was surprised not to see him out as I was under the impression he would be given a chance to compete for a roster spot. I can only assume that want to call up a younger player and leave some cap room by sending MZA down.
