New York Rangers Pregame: Mats Zuccarello Earning A Spot, Brad Richards To Play, Tonight's Line Combinations

There is a plethora of news to sort through this afternoon, as the New York Rangers prepare for their tilt against the New Jersey Devils tonight.

Both of the Rangers new offseason signings, Brad Richards and Mike Rupp, will be playing tonight; which should help put to bed any concern of Richards' sore groin yesterday. Although nothing will be set in stone this early, we should get a good look at who are the preliminary favorites to fill the wing slot on the Richards-Marian Gaborik line.

For tonight, and as it has been mostly through training camp, it's Wojtek Wolski. Wolski hasn't just been auditioning for a role on the first line, he's been auditioning for a contract at the end of the year.

Star-divide

Here are the combinations for tonight's matchup with the Devils:

Wolski-Richards-Gaborik

Ruslan Fedotenko-Brian Boyle-Zuccarello

Mike Rupp-Khris Newbury-Dale Weise

Carl Hagelin-Derek Stepan-Ryan Callahan

Brendan Bell, Michael Del Zotto, Tim Erixon, Ryan McDonagh, Mike Sauer, Pavel Valentenko

Martin Biron, Chad Johnson

Stick salute to Jesse Spector for the line combinations. Those are just the defenseman, not the pairings, we'll update that as soon as the information is available.

Zuccarello is also impressing in camp, and not just the media members. Many reports came out to day that Zuccarello was used heavily on the power play during the morning skate, which is a good sign for the young forward.

The fact that he's getting a look with Boyle and Fedotenko tonight is a good sign as well, since he'll have ample opportunities to show he belongs with the big club. I've been saying for awhile now that I want to see Zuccarello make this team out of camp, tonight is just another opportunity for him to prove he belongs.

The open game thread will open at 6:30 as usual guys, hope to see you there.

its nice to hear that Zuke is being used on the powerplay

But is he being used correctly? I don’t wanna see him on the point again like he was last year

zucc’s a valuable player. we’re gonna kick ourselves if we ever trade him. he just needs to get used to the NHL and be given viable scorers on his line to click with. maybe him, artie, and cally could be good.

by InxDisgust on Sep 23, 2011 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Putting the physical adjustment aside, my only gripe with Zucc last year was his propensity to stop moving his feet in the offensive zone both on PP and ES. Perhaps that’s part of the rink adjustment. We’ll start to see tonight.

I wonder why Kundratek hasn’t gotten a game yet.

He’s got the same problem as Neimi, lack of talent. All toast, no jam.

My impression was Kundratek had a bunch of jam to his game.

Given Staal’s situation, I hope Valentenko comes out and rocks the shit. The more insurance the better.

Devils lineup tonight, from Gulitti again:

Forwards: Ilya Kovalchuk-Jacob Josefson-Nick Palmieri, Mattias Tedenby-Adam Henrique-Petr Sykora; Rod Pelley-David Steckel-Vladimir Zharkov; Eric Boulton-Tim Sestito-Brad Mills.

Defensemen: Anton Volchenkov-Andy Greene; Bryce Salvador-Adam Larsson; Matt Taormina-Mark Fayne.

Goaltenders: Martin Brodeur, Keith Kinkaid.

Weaker lineup than what we saw Wednesday, but still a healthy dose of NHL players and close to their entire defensive roster. (missing Tallinder is all, I think)

So basically Parise and Elias are out, fatso in. Really shows that Devils have no depth at all. When Parise went down with injury last year their lack of depth came full circle with the team.

I laugh a bit at fans of the isles and devils who claim by having good stretch of the season last year proves they are a very good team or can be one. Same goes with the Pens who finished up nicely last year minus Crosby, Malkin, and Staal.

I think the Pens though are a good team minus just crosby, but not a great team or cup contender.

John Tortorella on 24/7 will be like Ari Gold on Entourage.

(Choke, cough, vomit in mouth) Isles do have some very good young scorers. They will be able to put up some numbers this season.

They are also not deep at all, if they have 2-3 injuries they are in trouble.

by BigB22 on Sep 23, 2011 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Add 15 goals

To the Isles total from last year and they are top 10 in the league. I think a full year of Okposo and Streit could easily account for that type of production.

Their problem will still be keeping goals out of their own net.

Didn’t they just lock up Montoya and Nabokov through the 2034 season?

Brooks

Brooks tweeted that campoli could be an option for rangers.. thanks brooksie what would we do without you. That’s right, go to capgeek.com, look up free agent d men, and name one of the more known names on the list but not the highest paid player cuz the rangers r up against the cap. Thanks for the break news!

After watching Traverse and the 1st preseason game, I am confident our depth at defense is sufficient to get us through the beginning of the season with no problem. We can make do without adding additional players with no problem.
BTW—- LETS GO RANGERS!

Fan Conduct

Did anyone see the story about a fan in Detroit that threw a banana peel at Simmonds during shootout attempt? Thought that crap was only done in Europe, very sad.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 23, 2011 4:11 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I did read about that. Very classless in my opinion. But the real sick part about it is if that happened at a NFL or NBA game it would be all over sportscenter, and Al Sharpton would be running to the nearest camera he can find. But since it’s hockey interest level in a story like that is very low. News organizations absolutely love to talk about stories like that but since it has to do with hockey they’ll only mention it.

I was even more surprised to read that it was in Ontario, (not Detroit), I thought Canada had less racism and more ethnically diverse cities like Toronto and Vancouver…

Canada also has MTL fans who wreck their own city after hockey games, so it’s a mixed bag

Help a blueshirt fanatic in panic!!
Last season i watched every single game live on ESPN Player, just found out that they dont have the rights to NHL this year :( Only option i know of is NHL Gamecenter Live at NHL.com, but last year they redirected me to ESPN because i live in sweden(Atleast i can watch my beloved Rangers live for the first time) Please is there a fellow blueshirt fan who can help me fix this lifethreatning problem?

Best information about watching games from Europe I found is this one.

You can’t sign up on NHL Gamecenter Live yet but it should be available soon.
