2011 New York Rangers Training Camp: 35 Players Survive First Round Of Cuts
The New York Rangers have made their first round of cuts. A few surprises are on the list, highlighted by Pavel Valentenko. Valentenko probably wouldn't be on this list if it weren't for his performance last night, but that's the way training camp goes sometimes.
Erik Christensen will get one more opportunity to prove he belongs, despite a rough preseason thus far. He better make the most of his chances, however, because Mats Zuccarello is having a heck of a camp.
Although many would have liked to see Christian Thomas make the squad, his game simply isn't ready yet. After one more year of seasoning at the OHL level, however, he's going to make a huge splash next year. And while this year's first round pick, J.T. Miller, got cut, he proved that he was a great first round pick who can be a special player someday.
Good to see Ryan Bourque, Tim Erixon, Dylan McIlrath and Carl Hagelin survive the first round of cuts as well.
A full list of who got cut and who survived below.
New York, September 24, 2011 New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has assigned the following 21 players to Connecticut (AHL): goaltenders Chad Johnson, Jason Missiaen and Cameron Talbot; defensemen Lee Baldwin, Collin Bowman, Sam Klassen, Tomas Kundratek, Jyri Niemi, Jared Nightingale, and Pavel Valentenko; and forwards Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, Tommy Grant, Jordan Hickmott, Tayler Jordan, Kale Kerbashian, Chad Kolarik, Chris McKelvie, Matt Rust, Scott Tanski, Kelsey Tessier, and Jason Wilson. In addition, the Rangers returned seven players to their respective junior club: defensemen Peter Ceresnak (Peterborough, OHL) and Samuel Noreau (Baie-Comeau, QMJHL); and forwards Shane McColgan (Kelowna, WHL), J.T. Miller (Plymouth, OHL), Michael St. Croix (Edmonton, WHL), Christian Thomas (Oshawa, OHL), and Andrew Yogan (Peterborough, OHL).
The Rangers now have 35 players remaining in training camp, including three goaltenders, 11 defensemen and 21 forwards. The Blueshirts practice schedule for tomorrow, September 25, is 11:00 a.m. at the MSG Training Center. New York continues their exhibition schedule on Monday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. when the team will travel to Philadelphia to face-off against the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.

He wasn’t going to make the opening night roster, it’s better he stays here and doesn’t miss any time in juniors. I agree he played well, but this is the best plan for his development

He had a good game
But there was never any chance of him making the team this year. He and McColgan apparently earned a chance in camp to show their stuff in a preseason game, which they made the most of, but the team (and they) knew all along they were going back to juniors, so might as well do it now so they can play and practice without impeding the opportunity of other Rangers to get ready for the season (i.e., most of the vets) or to try to show that they are ready to be on the team this year, at least at some point (i.e., EC, Avery and youngsters like MZA, Bourque, Hagelin and Wiese).
Final cuts as of now (assuming no trades)
Bickel, Bell, Parlett, McIlrath
Deveaux, Mitchell, Bourque, Hagelin, Thuresson, Newbury, EC (trade?), Weise
I think Torts wants Weise. But would he put Avery down to do it?
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 24, 2011 12:39 PM EDT reply actions
EC should be checked for concussions. that kid is so MIA in his head he looks depressed on the ice. like i said after hearing all these symptoms about concussions and i didn’t know any better i would say EC is suffering from a concussion because he is just missing even more than usual out there

Weiss. i never liked him but i give him so much respect now. he is doing everything he possibly can to do the right thing. he deserves something. a hug from torts is probably all he is going to get….actually maybe a Sullivan hug

I think they can fit both Weise and Avery under the cap
But I am not sure there is an opening in the lineup for Weise unless there are some injuries. And if he isn’t going to be in the lineup on regular basis, he is still young enough to benefit from playing full time in Hartford.
Just shows us that we really didn’t need Rupp. :(

Actually, does Weise need to clear waivers to go to Hartford?
If he does, maybe he could stick as a 13th man, since he might be lost if placed on waivers.

One thing that stands out to me
Ryan Bourque survived the first cuts while Thomas is going back to the OHL early. Bourque has been a very pleasant surprise and has played past Thomas to earn his spot. Not saying that Thomas disappointed, but it shows that he still has some seasoning to go through in Juniors

They are in different situations
Bourque has no junior eligibility yet, so he will be in Hartford and a potential injury replacement if he doesn’t make the Rangers out of camp (which is a longshot).
Thomas still has a year of junior eligibility yet, so unless he was going to make the Rangers, he was going back to Oshawa. Especially given Thomas’ size, the only was he was making the Rangers this year was to prove he is ready right now to be a significant NHL scorer. And he didn’t. Even if Bourque had not outplayed Thomas so far there is a good chance that he would have outlasted Thomas on the preseason roster.
Bourque will be in the AHL?

So if he doesn’t make the Rangers he’ll go to Hartford.
Well after that, it should look like...
Wolski – Richards – Gaborik
Dubinsky – Anisimov – Callahan
Fedotenko – Stepan – Christensen
Avery – Boyle – Prust
Rupp
Girardi – Staal
McDonaugh – Sauer
Erixon/Del Zotto – Eminger
Erixon/ Del Zotto
Lundqvist
Biron
I’d love to see the likes of Hagelin, Weise, MZA and McIlrath get their shot, but don’t see it happening yet…
EC has been awful. Best case scenario for him: healthy scratch most nights. but he will most likely be in the AHL, or traded.

you are so wrong on your bottom 9 and defensive pairings
1 KEEP FEDS BOYLE PRUST
2. No way does erixon serve as the 7th defenseman….it just makes no sense to impede ap players progress by keeping him around as a 7th defensman who will be scratched on some nights. Erixon makes the club and will become a major factor in a short time. Also yeah, i dont see EC in the lineup this year but i still dont understand why we didnt ship him out to Montreal earlier for at least a 5th round draft pick or something…..We managed to get MCD and valentenko or gomez so that shouldnt be too hard
How is he so wrong?
At least offer different suggestions. His defensive pairs are spot on.

Rangers didn't sign Rupp to a three year deal
for him to be a healthy scratch. He’ll be in there on a nightly basis. Torts is on record saying he thins Rupp can be a solid player.
Neither MDZ or Erixon should sit for Eminger
either hav em in there on a nightly basis or send em down.
The way I think it goes down...
Weise, Bourque, and McIlrath have made this team. I’m a little surprised that McCoglan was cut so soon. At best, he was good defensively, anticipated passes and intercepted well. His size is questionable, but that kid can play…he’s one to watch.

It was more of a Bell over Mcilrath argument but Bell has professional experience, I didn’t notice any problems with his game, granted it was one preseason game and he has a lot to prove and the org is prob way higher.on their young kids, but you cant deny the fact that bell made an impression.

All of them
Maybe not Kundratek, I’m not too sure about him.
Del Zotto is still one of the best prospects in the game, he’s just fallen on some hard times. Right now he is miles ahead of McIllrath in terms of development.
Erixon I don’t even feel the need to explain.
Eminger is a veteran, McIllrath has never played a game.

I like Del Zotto, but one of the “best prospects in the game” is a joke. We’re not talking about a top 5 pick here… At this point, there’s just as much of a chance that he doesn’t become a regular NHLer, as there is of him tearing it up in the NHL.
Hm
At this point, there’s just as much of a chance that he doesn’t become a regular NHLer, as there is of him tearing it up in the NHL.
I wouldn’t say that.
I mean you can say that about any young player in the NHL/AHL right now.
Del Zotto is 21 years old. A 21 year old that is already two years into his NHL career stands a pretty great chance of sticking somewhere, if you ask me.
Again, 21 years old.

I agree… he’s still young, lots can happen. But he’s far from a “lock” to be a dynamic NHLer. I think the highest probability is that he’s middle ground – but one extreme (not making it) is just as likely as the other extreme (becoming a star) at this point. I just wouldn’t say he’s one of the best prospects.
Eminger is in already. I don’t know why people continue to put him down, he is solid. I think some of you way underrate him.
Bell has been playing real well. He also has 101 NHL games and over 370 AHL games under his belt. With our depth at defense, he was laughed at when he said he was looking to make the squad several weeks ago. No much laughing (If any) going on anymore.
I think if Erixon is thrown into the fire, he will adjust within several games and be the player that he can be. Did not like seeing him standing as a pylon when Kove went around him though. Take the body!
McIlrath, I have the same feeling for him as Erixon. Although not exactly ready yet, I think if he was thrown in, he will do well. His heart is ready, he is still a little awkward though.
I like what Parlett has shown too. Remember, he tweaked his knee in Traverse, and maybe we are not seeing him at 100%.
MDZ, throw him in. Sink or swim. At this point it is all up to him. I did watch some of Cam Fowler tonight, and he did not look so good.Reminded me of MDZ. He also made a pass from the high slot in his own end to a player behind the net. Weird play.
Just mho.

An small 18 year old 5th round draft choice had zero chance of making the team this year
He apparently earned the opportunity to play in a preseason game, which most just drafted 5th rounders don’t get a chance to do. I’m sure he was thrilled to have that opportunity and had a good game, and I’m sure the Rangers will be watching his development closely and maybe in 2 years if he keeps developing he’ll get an opportunity to make the roster.
You must've been the same person who must've thought...
an 18 year old small fourth-round pick would never be captain of this team someday, either.

As for the others...
I’d be surprised if any of Weise, Bourque or McIlrath is still on the team when it returns from Europe, barring injuries. There is no room in the lineup. Even if both EC and Avery get cut, MZA has played well enough that he is certainly ahead of Weise and Bourque for the 12th forward spot. And both Weise and Bourque are too young to be sitting in the press box. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if either are on the team at some point once injuries start to accumulate.
As for McWrath, he has plenty to work on still in junior.
Weise has already outplayed Avery, Christensen, MZA, and most of the guys who were cut. Within the posts recently, I read how Weise was being compared to Lucic…now, as I don’t buy that, I do buy that he does have the size and skill (p.s., he has shown some of this so far, and it’s been so far, so good) to be an effective player: moreso effective than EC and Avery, by far.
As for Bourque, his speed has really made people pay more attention to him than we could’ve imagined. The Rangers do have decisions to make, and don’t discount Bourque being one of the players that makes the decisions as tough as they can be.
MZA, to me, makes sense to go down and get a little more North American experience. I saw some nice things, but if there’s any one who is subject to a sophomore jinx, it’s him.
And as for McIlrath…Erixon may have played well during Traverse City, but that hasn’t come with him to training camp. McIlrath can take the body and stick check. At times, he’s shown some offensive prowess. Is he the fastest guy out there? No. But I haven’t seen Eminger or MDZ show that they have affixed themselves into the conversation ofor the 5th or 6th spots. In fact, Erixon, Vtank, Ktank, MDZ and Eminger look like they’re morseo on the bubble. And anyone who can deny that they had awful games against the Devils ishould take their blinders off…seriously.

"I'm a doctor, not a barber, Jim." Dr. McCoy to Captain Kirk

Arguably Weise outplayed those guys for 2 exhibition games
That said, he didn’t outplay any of them in his time in NY last year. And he didn’t outplay MZA in their time in Hartford together last season either. I’m certainly rooting for him, but unless he continues to outplay Avery AND someone like Prust or Rupp gets hurt, I think he starts the year in Hartford.
As for Bourque, I think he got a little lost in the Hagelin and Thomas hype. I definitely think Thomas has a higher ceiling. But I saw why Bourque should be placed behind Hagelin. Like Hagelin, Bourque scored more than a point per game last season. Like Hagelin, he is solid defensively. While Hagelin played well in the NCAA postseason, Bourque played well on the US’s last two medaling teams at the WJCs, winning gold 2 years ago and as an alternate captain for last year’s bronze medalists.
As for McWrath, he had a generally good game against the Devils in game 1, but so did Erixon. And he still has a good deal of learning to do – MDZ is an example of what can happen when defensemen get rushed, and McWrath doesn’t have close to MDZ’s offensive skills to fall back on. A defensive defenseman in particular needs experience to be effective in the NHL, and there is no point in rushing him this season when he is only 19. If we have to live with Bell and Eminger as our 3rd pairing while McWrath grows into his body and learns the tricks of the trade in juniors, so be it. But I expect Erixon to have one spot on the 3rd pairing nailed down – he has more experience to begin with, and holding down a position in the SEL is strong evidence that he is ready to play in the NHL – much more than McWrath’s up and down season last year in WHL.
Correct
This is all time sensitive data.. mcilrath is going to be a monster, but he currently is not a monster and it would only hinder him to play significantly less time with the.big club when we.have. guys with experience that will play the position better. It just doesn’t make sense to rush a kid because someday he will be better. Right now we have bell and eminger that have experience and know how to play in the nhl, erixon and.mdz ill put together because they both have the tools just not quite there yet.

Please?!
Nine games of 7 to 9 minutes of hockey wouldn’t kill him, nor stunt his hockey growth, no more than the 17 or so minutes Del Zotto was getting. If we were talking about an offensive defenseman being counted on to turn around a team’s fortunes, it would be one thing…but we’re talking about a defensive defenseman who hits and will drop his gloves. This is not that tough an equation.

Wasting nine games of development and barely playing him is stupid
don;‘t get what’s the use of that. It makes much more sense to go with a guy like Eminger than wasting Mcilrath like this.
For a forward perhaps...
But if the Rangers have a defenseman playing only 8 minutes a game that is overstressing the other 5. And an offensive defenseman (like DZ a couple of years ago) is generally better able to contribute in this situation, because offensesive defenseman can lean on his offensive skill – for a defensive defenseman there is no substitute for experience, not even size. Even Staal, the best defensive defenseman we drafted in many years, was not ready to make the team before he turned 20.
That's hardly overstressing the other five...
They’re not being relied on to make his life easier on the ice.

That was me comparing Weise to Milan. Although I like the way he has been playing, I think it is more sarcasm then truth. I said it because several months ago, when Diddomete (sic?) was cut, someone stated he was supposed to be the next Milan (sarcastically). The posters did not know who I was, or my hockey knowledge.(Although much more limited than it used to be 20 years ago.) So I pretended to fall for the sarcasm. Next post was ,“I’ll take sarcasm for 300, Alex.” I posted my name was not Alex, it was Nathan.(Not true either.) Saying all this, (Nobody gives a fuck what I am posting anyways), I think Dale looked good. How can you not love the goal he scored the other night? Dumped Larsson with a good check, then went to the front of the net and buried. My kind of hockey, definitely.

Before you made the comparison, it was made by Hradek. Nonetheless, Weise is not being judged on last year, but THIS camp. And he has looked good, skated better (thank you, Barbara Underhill), and hit the hell out of everyone he’s seen.

make the team over who?
There just aren’t any spots, unless Avery and Christensen both don’t make the team and we use Weise and Borque as extras.

They have not made the team
Weise is the only guy that has a chance to make the team from the start of the season. Mcllrath is going down to juniors.
He will be this years sauer. Last year everyone was punping mcd and valentanko, neither made opening day roster. This year its erizon, del zotto who are assumed. I think both start in ahl, barring staal missing time, and bell being the 6th d. Eminger is playing folks, else they woulldn’t have signed him, and he wouldn’t have come.
by GAThingy on Sep 24, 2011 2:48 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
who makes thar sort of assumption?
After he played a solid defensive game and added some offense, and scoring the game winner off a bouncing puck that came off the boards at the point? why is it that bell won’t play in the nhl, again?

play A solid defensive game. Thats ONE game and we have enough competition for our blueline. There simply is no room
Eminger was signed as a guy who can take minutes if need be and sit in the pressbox without much fuss. He’ll play as of now b/c of MDZ’s lack of NHL play, not because he was signed to be given a definitive spot.

Or just to have him around in some extra preseason games when they don’t feel like playing Hank or Biron.
Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.
they are planning on bringing 3 goalies to europe just in case there is an injury….europe is a little far away for a call up lol…thats why we have 3
I read somewhere that the 3rd goalie going to Europe would not be the “third” goalie in the organization. Meaning Talbot and possibly Chad Johnson are likely ahead of Stajcer. Logic being whoever goes to Europe would likely get little work and be equivalent of bullpen catcher.

I’ll bet he clears and everyone clamoring that we would lose him on waivers if he didn’t start the season in the NHL would be proved wrong.
#12 Carl Hagelin
by The Blue Seats on Sep 24, 2011 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions
There a a number of clubs that could have interest in a young defensemen with a big body and a hard shot. Islanders don’t necessarily need that at he moment with streit coming back into the lineup, but you can’t rule it out.
by nhl_legendz on Sep 24, 2011 6:44 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Glad Hagelin is still around
I was at the game in Albany and I could not keep my jaw from dropping everytime he turned on his speed
He’s still here because he’s got that speed and that he proved to the organization that he at some point will be a regular in the nhl. That’s about it, he’s not making the team this yr, maybe mid season if he’s hot and were depleted, but not opening night roster.
Still, have to love when prospects pleasantly surprise.
by nhl_legendz on Sep 24, 2011 6:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Wait. Is he still in juniors? If so, he’s not a mid season call up. I expect him to get a long look and possibly a spot next yr..
by nhl_legendz on Sep 24, 2011 7:06 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
No. He just finished four years at michigan. He’s 23 so its AHL for him if he doesnt make it.

Thank you.
Therefore, mid season is probable, still think he.needs a little seasoning.

Let’s get a few things straight.
1. EC sucks and should be traded for ice shavings or be sent to connecticut.
2. Brendan Bell had one good game and needs to play well against the Flyers for me to give him some consideration.
3. Avery’s spot is still in question and he’s another one who needs to have a good game against the Flyers as he was invisible in Albany the last 2 periods.
4. MZA has a spot on this team. I think he is primed to provide to some secondary scoring with Stepan this year.
5. Our forwards should look like this:
Gabby
Richie
Wolski
Cally
Dubi
Artem
Stepan
MZA
Prust
Boyle
Rupp
Feds
Avery
Bourque/Hagelin
Also, I expect Bourque and Hagein to see some period of time on the NHL level this year. How long their time is on the level will be determined by their play.
John Tortorella on 24/7 will be like Ari Gold on Entourage.

Sounds right except
there is no way Bourque or Hagelin are the 14th or even 13th forward. If they don’t crack the top 12 they go to Hartford. Which isn’t to say they won’t be on the team at some point in the event of injuries.
Being nit picky.. but it right
by nhl_legendz on Sep 24, 2011 10:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I’d rather give Borque and Hagelin extra time in Hartford and just keep Christensen as the 14th forward.

More than likely will be the case.

Unfortunately, i suspect EC may stick to start season
Having a guy with talent to step into top six if someone gets dinged is a luxury. Agree above on hagelin/bourqe. Weise/avery/ec are 12/13/14 for opener.
