New York Rangers News: Staal Will Not Travel To Europe; Cuts and Prust Update
The New York Rangers announced today that defenseman Marc Staal will not be traveling to Europe with the team. Along with that, Staal also won't be traveling to Philadelphia for the pre-season game tomorrow night.
Tortorella and camp are still evaluating Staal's condition, and will receive an update in another 4-5 days. Although, Staal isn't ruling out the season opener just yet, and there still is hope. We hope all turns out well with Marc Staal.
The Rangers will also be cutting two more forwards, following the game in Philadelphia tomorrow evening. This will finalize the roster ,heading into the European exhibition games. Torts also gave an update on Brandon Prust, stating that he is "on track" to play some games in Europe.
Follow after the jump for some analysis on prospects and tomorrow's line-up.
Tortorella commented on recently cut J.T. Miller, and stated that he was really impressed with his game this year. Also stating that he is confident for the future with Miller. Dylan McIlrath also had a mention, and he stated that "he isn't ready" to make that next step just yet. They plan to play him in Europe to give him some more training, and to teach him.
Forwards:
Avery, Dubinsky, Boyle, Weise, Deveaux, Mitchell, Zuccarello, Christensen, Anisimov, Thuresson, Bourque, Wolski
Defense:
Goalies:
Lundqvist and Biron

Somebody please explain this to me
They suspect that Staal’s consussion (or symptoms) are caused by his retarded brother when he hit him in the head.
But that happened in March or April, why Mark has not been evaluated since then and why is it all of a sudden surprise for the team management and for the fans?
I don’t believe it was a surprise for the management. If I remember correctly, they said it started this summer when he was getting ready to ramp up work outs for training camp. The team most likely new, but did not have to disclose it until it got closer to camp with roster cuts and whatnot.
Glad to hear that Torts liked Millers play. I was impressed with his play as well. Good to hear Prust is on track to play some games in Europe. That guy has lots of Jam.
He passed a baseline test before he played.

I read that he passed two baseline tests. One of them was when he first returned from his knee injury, which was also incurred during the hit from his brother. Torts also stated in an interview, that at the time they were worried about his knee. He stated since the media never asked about his concussion, he did not disclose it for obvious reasons. then the symptoms popped up again. Rangers have definitely been handling this properly from what I have seen.

Simple
He took the hit in February, passed all the baseline tests during the season and then during the summer symptoms started appearing so the Rangers started monitoring it and are taking all the right precautions

When I first heard about Staal I wasn’t worried, but there has been nothing in the way of positive news regarding this since the Rangers finally decided to let the cat out of the bag after they had known about this for six months. At this point, considering the information we have been given, and the likelihood that there is a great deal more we haven’t been told, I’m ready to assume the worst. Me personally, I’m willing to put the chances that we see Staal within the first 5 games of the year at about 20%, in the first 10 games, at about 35%. Something just doesn’t smell right to me here, in fact, it downright stinks.

~Those Caps fans sure think they can make some noise.... too bad their team can't.
It’s rangers business as usual, they don’t tend to share behind the scenes info that often.

Staal
isn’t scheduled to miss any time, he’s still expected to play in the opener on October 7th. No need to make him take a long trip to Europe, they may as well shut him down until they need him, and give him a few extra weeks to rest.

well...
whats the difference if he makes the trip with them now….as opposed to a week later.
if he’s expected to play the opener on the 7th…he’ll need to make his way over to Sweden at some point.

See no reason for him to play the first two games of the year
the goal should be to try and have him ready for the game against the Isles on the 15th.
That’s my feeling as well. The Euro trip isn’t all that important, especially the preseason/exhibition games

Home opener.
He’s too important. Stay close to .500 and it should be okay. Slats should working phone to clear a bit of space and get another vet closer to 4/5 guy versus 6/7 guy.

no
no more veterans… eminger slides in to 6, erixon slides in with sauer, mcdonagh with girardi… or you flip flop eminger and erixon and give MDZ limited time on the pp, the answer is within… not with trading… guys like bell and bickel can step up and take the 7 spot… MDZ has nhl experience all of this is moot cause staal will play… if i’m not mistaken he skated today…
the need for a veteran is grossly overrated… if i’m not mistaken mcdonagh and sauer were rookies who took over for veterans and were a great shutdown pair… veteran doesn’t mean a damn thing…
@clalicata17
You dont really think they can hide MDZ and Erixon in the line up at the same time. Mentioning Bell and Bickel suggests you’ve been drinking or had a stroke. Seriously, think about it.
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 25, 2011 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions
who do you suggest we get? anybody worth trading for is going to cost more than we are willing to part with… and if we go sign a 35 year old defenseman who is barely clinging to his nhl career? I’d rather let erixon play…
staal’s not out for the season, hope is not lost relax… they aren’t going to remodel the team because staal may miss 10 games… even 20 games…
@clalicata17
you bring in a vet for a young team who needs leadership and stability, our teams leadership has been defined…
@clalicata17
They need someone who can play decent minutes, including some late in 3rd. Nobody is talking about leadership.
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 25, 2011 7:37 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
you don’t need a vet to eat up minutes… we need a defenseman to eat up minutes… and we have plenty of defenseman to do that… better than any option that is out there… we are looking for a possible short term fix not something long term so signing a player and or trading for a player is out… the answer is within…
@clalicata17
we don't even know
if McDonaugh and Sauer will play to the level of last season, exceed their expectations, or regress. There is just too much uncertainty on our blue line without staal—he was the rock that would make this huge youth infusion work—without him, we need another vet.
From what I have seen from Bell, I think he is solid. He has not played at the NHL level since 2009, but has been playing in Europe. Give him a little bit of time re-adjust. Furthermore, he has 101 NHL games and 374 AHL games under his belt. He has some experience.

You either have really poor sarcasm or are overreacting tremendously.
The team didn’t collapse last year when Staal missed some games, and as of now he’s not scheduled to miss any real games.
Even if he does miss some games, our team can step up and handle it.
Can you explain what we do with this vet dman you want us to get after Staal returns(if he does miss time)? Do we push mcd or sauer down? Do we stop trying to get erixon set on the NHL level? How much $ are you spending and for how long?
Plot out your idea a bit better maybe there’s a cheap 1 yr 4/5 dman out there we’ve all missed….including the rangers who have even said they’ve kept an eye out since the end of last year.
by teknics on Sep 25, 2011 6:08 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I don’t get it either. We have been bragging about our depth at defense, then we lose one defenseman (Although arguably our best) and now we have no depth? We have not even lost him yet. We do have several rookies, who if called upon, will make that jump and do ok. Ready for the NHL or not, they will be able to handle it. We can absorb the absence of Staal. It is not the end of the world. Will the rookies make mistakes?Absolutely. Remember, we also have the King and Biron , who can negate some of the expected bad plays.
I watched Cam Fowler the other day. I thought McIlrath has been making much better on ice decisions than him. I think he is in for a soph slump. One play he was in his own end, high slot, and passed it back to a player behind his own net. If you saw MDZ do that, you would have kicked the tv over. What I am saying is we will be just fine. Just hope everyone is healthy for our late spring cup run.

Exactly, we’re full swing in a youth movement, one of our guys MIGHT be hurt and now we’re going to abandon youth and look for another vet? We just got rid of Rozi let’s just stick to our youth.

Its pretty obvious, if Staal doesnt improve soon Slats will make a deal. Dont listen to me, you can read about in the press release
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 25, 2011 7:42 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
what press release? torts saying that they’ve been keeping an eye out for a vet was a statement made prior to eminger signing… and not a press release… i haven’t heard any press release stating the rangers are in the market for a veteran defenseman…
@clalicata17
I was being prophetic. I’ll accept your apology in advance for when the trade/signing announcement comes out.

Maniac, Gabby is right, at some point, in the future, at no particularly specific time, Sather will…..make some trade, for some guy, to address some need, not necessarily particular to this instance…so Gabby is a friggin clairvoyant in that aspect for predicting that.
Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.
Can't compare a guy plying in a pre-season game
vs a guy that had a strong rookie year. That is silly.
Haven't really heard much bragginbg about the depth
Erixon may not be ready yet and who knows about MDZ and Eminger is a 7th dman.
uhh Sauer and MCD are stone cold locks to play everynight no matter what
A vet would push out Eminger of the line up, which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
So who slots next to girardi then? In this majorly hypothetical you have:
?/girardi
Mcd/sauer
Erixon&mdz/eminger
Where do you put a cheap 1yr 4/5 dman without either being no better than adding a young kid or hampering someone from getting the time they need/deserve with a role they fit?
Fire away.
by teknics on Sep 25, 2011 11:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
McD slots up to play with Girardi, Erixon to play with Sauer, and Eminger and MDZ round out the team.

You guys are in denial.
Counting on any combination of Eminger/MDZ/Erixon early in regular season is a recipe for failure. I think its worth a try for next week or so..but if Staal doesn’t improve they will make a move.
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 26, 2011 6:46 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Really? Which cookbook has this recipe? Maybe counting on those pairings in the playoffs would be bad, but IF Staal misses time (which he’s NOT scheduled to do) I dont see how 2-3 games of that causes a season-wide failure.
Again, you’re over reacting like a girl who sees a spider.
by teknics on Sep 26, 2011 9:00 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
It’s not so mouch “counting on them”.
Its focusing on the guys we can bring in versus the guys we already have. Is Campoli that much better than Eminger? Not to my knowledge.
Also, if Staal is only out a few games, I’m depending on our top 4 to play 45-50 minutes a night. The bottom pair can handle 10-15, even if they play sub-par.

Depth
If we were to add a vet dmen it would be to add some depth and insurance, but with all the young guys we have it wouldn’t make much sense considering our current team philosophy of bringing in the kids..
by nhl_legendz on Sep 25, 2011 11:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Right now if Staal's healthy
Eminger is likely the 5th or 6th Dman. Erixon and MDZ both won’t likely make the team by all accounts. You are assuming Erixon is ready which he may not be and he may or may not need to be and he may need the majority of the year to develop in Hartford.
sure...
why not just bring back Redden. :-D

Very interesting info:
I like Tank’s game a lot. I hope we can see him get some minutes this year.

What “game” are u reffering to because all I seen from him is garbage (sorry if that’s too strong of a word). That snippet said he likes the north American style but he still wants out if he doesn’t make the rangers this year. Instead of going to the whale n try again next year he wants out n away. I say peace out we can get another

Flying and Concussions don't mix
They’re probably not letting him go because concussion symptoms (e.g. headaches, dizziness) can get worse if you fly for many hours. The trip to Europe is a long one and there’s no reason to make his symptoms worse just to have him unable to play BECAUSE hi symptoms got worse.
He’s likely feeling fine – they wouldn’t have given him the “A” if they thought he wasn’t going to play.
For all of you optimists about Staals condition
He is still symptomatic seven months after the hit. What gives you reason to think it will abate in the next two weeks?
If anything, the prolonged duration of symptoms tells us something is wrong and expecting him back in the line up any time soon is dillusional.
All is not lost. This team is going to score goals and without Staal the d is still middle of the oack. Not to mention a top three goalie in the world.
But dont be shocked when Sather makes a move if Erixon and MDZ dont start showing more.
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 26, 2011 6:54 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
He hasn’t “had symptoms for 7 months”
He had no immediate symptoms of a concussion, several months later he had a few days of “post concussion-LIKE symptoms” and they’ve been babying him ever since to be safe.
