Owens signs with Rangers, Campoli to Canadiens

Former Ranger prospect Jordan Owens signed a free agent deal with the Rangers. We originally traded Owens to Detroit for Kris Newbury. This should be an AHL signing as i don't see him really having a chance at the NHL squad this season. Also Chris Campoli signed a free agent deal worth $1.75 million. This throws out any possibility of Campoli signing with the Rangers as an insurance policy for Staal's concussion woes. Any thoughts?

i believe any hole we need to fill can be done so from within the system. I highly doubt staal’s condition is so bad that he will be out of an extended period of time. We will be fine. We can use who we have now and possibly have a few of our kids 9 games stints if need be
As evidence by what?
Looking back at the hits that led to this concussion problem they certainly looked worse than Crosby’s. I think it’s been documented a tone lately that the severity of a concussion is extremely difficult to diagnose.
Bottom line… he’s got post-concussion syndrome and NO ONE knows when it will subside and for how long.
And having MDZ, Erixon, Bell, etc. in the lineup is going to make this very difficult start to the season much more difficult.
We can fill space with our depth but we cant gain back that talent. MCD is the next best thing down Staal’s side and he isnt Staal caliber yet, it was easy to see in the Philly game that he is going to take some bumps facing top lines if Staal isnt ready for the season opener.
My biggest worry is Sauer right now. We have the defensive depth to keep the ship afloat without Staal but if we have to move MCD up and Sauer is missing time our whole #2 line needs to be replaced and that kind of depth we dont have yet. Eminger can take that role but with a kid if MDZ gets his head on straight (doubtful) he might be a filler, Erixon doesnt look ready for that kind of role just yet and he is the best of the bunch.

MCD-Girardi
MDZ/Erixon-Eminger
MDZ/Erixon-Bell
Our third line would be fine but our second line will get exploited by deeper teams. If Sauer is ready to go though we can weather the time without Staal but if they are both missing some time this season we dont have a true second defensive pair, none of the kids seem ready enough to get stuck out there against top lines and hold their own night in and night out.
