New York Rangers Breaking News: Rangers Finalize Roster For Europe
I hate to bury Kevin's recap, so please make sure to give it a read after you take a look at this.
The New York Rangers have finalized their roster for the trip to Europe to play a few preseason friendlies and then eventually start the season.
A few players have made pretty big impacts on John Tortorella so far this preseason, and all of them remain on the team. Ryan Bourque, Tim Erixon, Dylan McIlrath, Dale Weise and Carl Hagelin highlight the list of prospects who are making the trip. It will be great to see what McIlrath can do with the extra time with the Rangers, Tortorella has been very impressed with his game and hopefully he keeps showing it in Europe.
For Bourque, Hagelin and Erixon, it's an opportunity to make a final push to make the team, or at least keep their names in the back of the minds of the Rangers' brass. All three have truly shown potential, and the skill-sets to be NHL players in the future, but maybe not this year. Of everyone, Bourque has been the biggest riser in terms of prospects within the Rangers' system.
Andre Deveaux and Andreas Thuresson were the two players cut. Erik Christensen and Sean Avery will have a few more opportunities to try to earn their spots on the team, their cases weren't helped by a good Mats Zuccarello performance against Philadelphia, Monday.
The Rangers official press release is below the jump, including a full list of the player making the trip.

You want bodies on the team
especially for all these preseason games.

Yea I would have rather kept Thuresson than Newbury.

Would hate to lose Weise and Mitchell on waivers
Decent NHL ready 4th line types for call up. I guess the upside is those chances will go to Bourque, Hagelin, and Thuresson (who impressed last night).

eh i think they'll clear
ppl also thought we would lose v tank on waivers. Truth is, we probably see these guys play way more than most front office ppl from other teams around the league. Most organizations have their own 4th line call-ups that they know much better and are high on.
We’re most likely to lose a guy like MDZ or Zucc if anotehr team decides to take a flyer on their upside.
+1
In any case, losing Mitchell would not be a big deal, despite his good game last night. There are plenty of players just as good in the AHL. Weise would be a bit more problematic due to his youth, but still, his upside is a 3rd liner, so even losing him would hardly be a tragedy.
As I understand it
Once you make a waiver claim you go to the bottom of the list.
A claim is not to be taken lightly, if someone shows up later in the year you might miss out.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

This is what I was worried about in July when we signed Rupp
He obviously gets a spot with that contact he signed. of course if we didn’t sign him or Feds back & none of the kids impressed we’d be screaming about the lack of Vet presence in camp.
I say dump Avery, Newbury, Christensen, Mitchell and then try to trade Weise maybe, sucks he’s out of options
Were they saying "Boo" or "Boo-urns?"

Tortorella has stated up front that McIlrath is not ready.. but it would be interesting to see him stick around for the 10 games junior players are allowed before a decision must be made, to fill in for Staal should he miss any regular season action. He’s looked pretty capable, enough to get a “cup of coffee” in the league as they like to say in baseball.
Tortarella said McWrath is still with the team to get more teaching and practice with the big club
Keeping him for 10 regular season games would just be a waste of his development time at this point though.
The staff there certainly has a better feel for where he’s at than I do, but what I was suggesting was that it would be neat to see him get a little game action on the third defensive pairing before he had to be returned.
I agree that having him around and not playing would be a waste. And realistically it won’t happen because they have other defensemen they have to make decisions on without the option of juniors. But it would be interesting to see how he fared, I think.
Hopefully players like Bourque and Hagelin could use the larger ice surface to their advantage and really show off their speed these next few games

agree
Hagelin has struggled in the offensive zone so far. Good work defensively and on pk. Still figuring out offensive game.

Bourque showed good speed and movement last night
Would love him on 3rd line wing next year.

This is a nice reward for the young guys
Rangers have 4 games in 5 nights, then need a few extra lines / bodies.
I can’t imagine how cool it must be to ride a jock strap stinkin’ bus in the minors for years – then get on an NHL charter jet bound for Europe.
I’ve been high on Bourque since the WJC. My money is on him making the team this year. He is the guy who nabs a candy bar from the Tortorella ice time vending machine.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .
BTW I hate Philadelphia
