Rangers Analysis: Brian Boyle's Elevated Role on the Rangers
Brian Boyle has come a long way since being acquired by the Rangers in the summer of 2009. He saw his goal total quintuple (yes, that's a word) last season and he also put up 29 more points than he did the previous year. Boyle is no longer a fourth line player, which is evident by the $1.7 million contract he was given in July. But the statsheet is not the only place in which we've seen changes in Boyle's game since coming to New York. He's more physical, he's more capable, and most of all, he's more vocal.
During Monday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Flyers, MSG Network had Boyle mic'd up for all three periods. You learn a lot about a player when you listen to those things and that held true with Boyle the other night. He was constantly communicating with his teammates in order to set-up plays and scoring opportunities, and he was also acting as a leader when giving tips to young guys such as Ryan Bourque.
Communication in sports goes a long way, especially in such a fast-paced sport like hockey, and you can hear the conversations that Boyle has with Brandon Dubinsky and Dan Girardi on how they are going about setting up the cycle and the breakout.
Take a look/listen...

Going into the season I saw Brian Boyle as someone who was emerging as a core player on this hockey club. I think after watching this, I'm convinced that he definitely is a core player on this hockey club already.
The constant encouragement and advice he was giving in that video is something you want to see out of all of your players, but unfortunately there are only a select few that actually possess that sort of personality. Boyle is one of those players and it's evident that he is a leader on this team even though he may not wear a letter.
Boyle has been one of the more impressive players in training camp and preseason, picking up a goal and an assist in Monday's 4-3 loss. He's setting himself up for yet another successful season on Broadway this year, and maybe will even be able to surpass his 21 goal total from 2010-11. But even if he's not scoring, he still brings the intangibles to the ice that not every player is capable of doing, and those are the types of players both coaches and fans fall in love with.
It's amazing how much Boyle's role has expanded since being traded here, and I think you have to credit the coaching staff and management for helping him reach his peak here in New York. Boyle is a huge part of this team now and if the Rangers do end up having a strong year this season, you can bank on Boyle being a big part of that.

As stated often, bigger players take more development time. He is still not crunching people but you can see he has started to learn how to use his size to his advantage. Plus he has pretty good hands and legs for a player that size.
I would really be interested in seeing how he would do on wing playing a more north/south game. I think he could be a Mike Knuble kinda power forward. Ironic comparing a big guy the Rangers developed to a big guy the Rangers gave up on. My how the times have changed.

I agree 100%
No reason he can’t be a 25 goal 50 point power forward that plays on the top line ala Knuble.
Damn, i'm good

this is obviously a much better/ more thorough write up, but i stated something similar in a fan post a few days ago haha. good to see im not the only one who thinks this. hes gonna be impotant this year.
I've been saying this for four months!
Look at his ice time and production last year. Look at his career progression at each level. He’s the 7/8th forward along with Stepan.
TORTS NEEDS TO FIND A WAY TO GET THEM ICE TIME!
Give me Boyle / Stepan / Zucc for a few games. That could be winning combination.

Good Call Gabby !
From your mouth to Torts’ ears. +1
this is my preferred third line
step and boyle woud be interchangeable, getting them each experience at pivot and wing—plus boyle can take draws for step.
how is zucc in the circle I wonder?
Love when he asks EC if he wants to take the faceoff and EC just goes “uhhhhhhhhh” like the soft moron he is. I hope we never see that guy again.
I thought that was Artie.
But agree on EC. cya!

Boyle's emergence has made me change my opinion on the lines.
The set up of..
Wolski Richards Gaborik
Pack Line
MZA Step Rupp
Feds Boyle Prust
Is okay, but I think Boyle is too skilled for that line. Put Boyle with Step and MZA and have a 4th line of Feds/Prust/Rupp/Avery. Give Prust and Feds some PK time to get more minutes as well.

Boyle has the potential to be one of those “power forwards,” a label that has all but disappeared from the game…Guys like Guerin, Bertuzzi, Shanahan, Nolan, Tkachuk…That type of player is just about extinct. I have a hard time even thinking of players like that now – guys who score 25 to 30+ goals and have 200+ penalty minutes. Boyle does not have the same talent as those guys (they are rare specimens) but he has shown the skills to get up there in the goals. However, his “snarl” seems a bit forced, almost as if the coaching staff told him that since he is so big, he has to play nasty. I don’t think its part of his game where he would be the 200+ penalty minute guy but he has protected his teammates, thrown his body around, and been in the middle of scrums. He has been a real find.
Well..the 200+ PIM thing alone is virtually extinct. There’s only been 12 of those seasons in the last 4 years, and Carcillo has 3 of them.
The only 25+ G, 100+ PIM guys in the league over the last 3 seasons
2011 Perry (50, 104) and Lucic (30.121)
2010 Burrow (35, 121), Malkin (28, 100), Perry (27,111) Kesler (25, 104)
2009 Perry (32, 109), Backes (31, 165), Hartnell (30, 143), Burrows (28, 150), Getzlaf (25, 121)

Lucic might be the one guy that is modeled after those older guys, mainly based on his scoring ability. I thought about Iginla but noticed that his PIMs are much lower than I had thought. I hate thinking about Perry…oh, Hugh Jessiman! I just looked at that 2003 first round and there are some monster names there. Even the later rounds had some real gems like Pavelski and Byfuglien. At least we have Boyle now…
He hasn't reached his peak yet...
Great article, great video too. However, at the end you stated that teh coaching staff should be credited for helping Boyle reach his peak. I honestly think he tops his performance from last year and if he continues to grow as a skater, he could be putting up 30 goals a season in 2-3 years.
But anyhow, great read.
boyle
i agree completely with this. boyle has been a great leader on the ice he is not afraid to speak up or out towards anyone. he always wants whats best for the team and puts the team needs first. i wish to god there were more boyle in the league cuz this name calling shit is pointless. anyways i mean if he works as hard as he did last year and devise a scheme around boyle he would easily put up 25-30-55
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Boyle is going to be a player in this league. The raw talent is there, the size is there, but most importantly, the motivation is there. He took it upon himself two summers ago and got help on his skating when he knew he needed to improve. How many Rangers followed him to Barbara Underhill’s camp this year? This guy is going to have multiple 30+ goal seasons in his career. Maybe not this year, but he will continue to get better because he wants to get better.
~R.I.P. Derek
~Those Caps fans sure think they can make some noise.... too bad their team can't.
Absolutely. He does have the size, skill, and determination to be a force. Overall, if we stay mostly healthy, we as a team will be force.
