Bantering Points: Was Steven Fogarty Worth The Risk?

 - Yesterday, Russ Cohen contributed another article for our prospect watch and this time it was on Steven Fogarty. According to Russ, Fogarty was well worth the risk, and could pan out well for the Rangers.

 - The Rangers finally got some light in a recent Hockey News article. But in this case, it was about upcoming prospect Tim Erixon. According to the article, Erixon has improved drastically with a deep SEL playoff run, and playing along side Adam Larsson.

 - The Islanders went ahead and did something bizarre yet again. No, DiPietro didn't get an extension. BUT, they did sign a deal with a tattoo parlor; oh it gets much better. The deal also includes a tattoo parlor to be included in Nassau Coliseum!

 - We all know Sean Avery is known for his rather aggressive attitude. But, did anyone know that he planned to get arrested in Washington, following a Keystone XL pipeline protest?

 - With NHL 12 right around the bend, Wayne Gretzky shares some insight on NHL 12 and what motivated him as a player in the NHL.

I have nothing against the Cubs. But I know how much their losses hurt their fans…so I like seeing them lose. Knowing that sort of spiraling misery exists makes me happy.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 3, 2011 9:32 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

ok, so why hate the second city? I know of no real sports rivalry between the two, so what gives?
As a NY fan, I’ve lived in Texas, Philly and D.C.; so you can imagine my NFC east position. By Chi-town? Just don’t get it.

Sounds crazy, but It has nothing to do with Chicago. Its the misery of the fan base and knowing how disappointed they are year after year. Its an odd obsession I have enjoying their pain being prolonged and relived. Felt same way about Red Sox until they finally won. Now its blah when I watch them.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 3, 2011 9:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

so what did you do in ’94?

by bleed'n blue on Sep 3, 2011 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I was 16 at the time and celebrated with the unbridled joy of being a care free teenager. Fast forward 16 more years and I’m living on the top of a mountain looking down at Whoville.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 3, 2011 10:19 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

sounds like ‘94 didn’t releive too much " prolonged " pain. So do you revel in the Islander misery right now, or have any memory of their nausiating “drive for 5”? Personally, I fell vindicated in dispising Islander fans who showed up in droves when they won, but play the disappearing act now that they suck. Islander fans could learn much from Cubbie fans; jubilation at winning gets sweeter when you’ve suffered through the rough years, but if no one showed up, then it’s just like pittsburgh or washington … they deserve to fold and move. That’s my beef with my only two non-division rivals on my list … the fans don’t deserve the success their teams are having right now.

Why did you put the USA Men's Soccer Team on your list?

Your not anti-American are ya? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! :-P

by NYR #35 Richter on Sep 4, 2011 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m a self loathing American… I love watching the US Men’s Soccer Team lose because they are the best we have to offer and so very bad compared to the rest of the world. However, the media here in the US tries to spin it like they are up and coming. They force feed bullshit to the few thousand viewer watching coverage about how dynamic the team is. But they are no closer now than they were 10 years to doing anything on international stage.

Guys like Landon Donovan playing in the MLS are like pimples on the ass of international soccer and made out to be great players here in the US, when they are very average. Even Clint Dempsey (who I like) plays for a low end squad in EPL. Even a Tim Howard who gets commercials here in the US is a stale fart in EPL.

In short, I like watching them lose because it sets the story straight about how bad our other football is in this country. Not that enough people care, but maybe at some point people will take notice and try to change things.

Very true. The USNMT is going nowhere fast. They have a few young guys who, as you said, the sportscasters try to hype up, but who would at best be fighting for top 11 spots on mid tier European teams.

I’m watching ND getting thumped at half time by South Florida and realized I’m enjoying it way too much. Plus my wife always asks me why I take more joy in watching ND and other teams lose than I do watching my favorite teams win.

I probably have a personality defect, as a fan of teams like Giants/Rangers/MUFC.. I feel relief when they win, not joy. My joy comes from watching the other teams fans funnel out of the stadium after a loss and knowing the fans watching on TV for the losing team are drinking too much and committing acts of domestic violence..only to wake up with a worse hang over and the depression of a loss.

Another thing I enjoy is hearing announcers that love certain teams having to rationalize why they lost. Notre Dame coverage on NBC is prime example. Islanders coverage is the same deal..you end up hearing some warped views on what drove the outcome of the game.

Long story short, I’m not a well adjusted person.

Miami Heat is a good one. Just outside my top 10 but another season of the south beach hype will move them up.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 3, 2011 9:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He was worth it!!! even though I dont see how your taking a risk on a third round pick but whatever

Grachev will be another Korpikoski. If not this year, next.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 4, 2011 12:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

maybe but the big difference between Korpi and Grachev is that Korpi was always aggressive and gritty. I see Grachev as very timid so I don’t know if he follows the same path as Korpi. I also liked Korpi’s wrist shot and thought he could be a 20 goal scorer in this league (19 last year). Grachev needs to use his body more to control the puck. He’s certainly big enough. Fogarty, at the cost of Grachev, was a good and bold move. Certainly worth the risk.

by Richter1994 on Sep 4, 2011 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Grachev would be lucky to be another Korpikoski.

I mean Grach asked to leave a year earlier, we obviously weren’t gonna go anywhere with him so Fogarty was a great pick

by CrazyRangerFan on Sep 4, 2011 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree that if the situation was as Sather stated it was a smart move. Nonetheless, I’m bullish on Grachev and think change of scenery and playing/being around guys like Backes, Arnott and that other old bastard from Stars/Devils could be kick in the ass he needs.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Sep 4, 2011 5:24 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Sometimes a change of scenery and being given another chance is enough, sometimes it is just a change of scenery. We had no room for him, we traded him and got a good prospect, no problem.

Various

1) I think it’s even more ridiculous and ironic that the Isles chose a song by “Nickleback”…as in what change Wang will get when he unloads his Mike Mill-buried organization.

2) I am so spent from bashing #16, I’m too exhausted to give him any more consideration.

3) Kinda off topic somewhat, but didn’t “King Richard” Brodeur of those same ‘Nucks let in a milestone Gretz goal at some point? I thought it was Wayne’s 1st but apparently not.

Any takers? :)
