Why Waiving Sean Avery Was The Right Decision For The New York Rangers

NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 05: Sean Avery #16 of the New York Rangers watches the action between the Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs at Madison Square Garden on December 5, 2011 in New York City. The Leafs defeated the Rangers 4-2. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

For some reason I cannot understand, Sean Avery has been a fan favorite in his time in New York. Despite his time in New York, then trip to Dallas, then trip to Hartford, then back to New York, then to Connecticut, and finally back to New York, throughout the entire way Avery has kept his own die-hard fans.

The Rangers ignored the die-hard Avery fans, however, and waived Avery on Friday. The news came as a shock to some, but it seemed destined to be after Avery was scratched in another set of consecutive games.

The Rangers made the correct decision in waiving Sean Avery, and here is why.

The Rangers don't need Avery- John Mitchell and Mike Rupp cost Sean Avery his job. Prior to Rupp returning, John Tortorella had to rely on Avery a bit for the "Rupp role" of defending the teammates and getting dirty goals, rather than solely relying on Brandon Prust for it.

Now that Rupp has returned, Avery is no longer needed for that role. Mitchell, on the other hand, has taken the last spot on the four lines by storm. When Wotjek Wolski returns, he will have to compete with Mitchell for that spot. Avery will not even get the chance.

John Tortorella still is not a Sean Avery fan- I never got the feeling that Tortorella got over Avery's antics. Tortorella is known to have blasted Avery when he was an analyst, and it still seems like Tortorella does not like the way Avery plays.

When the coach and a player cannot co-exist, the player does not belong on the team.

Follow me after the jump for more.

Star-divide

Avery was a waste of a roster spot- Not to call anyone out, but one comment from the original Avery thread jumped out at me.

Bad move. It might not make a huge difference, but I don’t see in the slightest why you would keep Rupp and/or EC over Avery.

It certainly seems that way, even I prefer Avery over Eric Christensen.

Going along with my last point, however, John Tortorella is more likely to play Rupp or Christensen over Avery. When the coach is as sure of his decision making as Tortorella is, there is little to no point to keeping Avery on the roster.

Unless one, or both, of Mitchell/Rupp got hurt, and Tortorella didn't see a replacement on the roster, Avery was not about to get back into the lineup.

Christensen and Rupp may play, but Sean Avery was not about to re-enter the lineup so fast.

The Rangers are in first place- Sure, you can throw stats at me that the Rangers have a better record with Sean Avery in the lineup, but the fact of the matter is that the Rangers are in first place, and you simply cannot attribute that to Sean Avery.

The Rangers have seen breakouts, comebacks, almost every type of improved season among their players. The blueshirts do not need Avery to win, and they proved that over the last stretch of games.

The waiving of Sean Avery does little to nothing to the Rangers in the long run.

Well put.

I think the Simmonds situation in preseason was final nail for Torts. No distractions needed.

I think Avery is good enough to play every night for a team. Hope he gets a chance somewhere else.

Hopefully we wont have to debate this anymore.

You may be right , and most probably you are, but I’m still sorry to see him go. Throughout all his trials, the one thing you have to say about Avery is that he gave 100%, 100% of the time he was on the ice. He never backed off, he never stopped trying, which is a LOT more than you could say about a lot of recent Rangers (present Rangers EXCLUDED). His play lessened for a couple of reasons which would hold true for ANY player- he was not given enough time on the ice (athough 3 goals in his last 15 games, playing a severly limited of time isn’t exactly bad), and rightly or wrongly, Torts really didn’t like/trust him and severly limited his style of play. His talent level is comparable to some players who are still on the roster, so I believe the other factors really made the difference in Tort’s decision.
Bottom line, a couple of factors made this decision the right one, but it’s still a shame to see him let go. I still think he has NHL talent and wish him good luck.
He has surely made things interesting in the short time he played for the Rangers.
I, for one, will miss him on the team.

This is a Business Leave your Feelings and Emotions at the Door

Did we forget this was a business? And the powers that be need to make decisions in order to improve the team even if means demoting Avery or even trading for a Bobby Ryan. I’m all for Avery’s demotion because the move was to make way for a team improving and getting healthier. The Rangers have a good thing going and there is no reason to mess with what’s currently proving to work, unless the powers that be can make a trade to improve the team without sacrificing key components.

Agreed

I’m an Avery fan, but like you said Rupp getting healthy has cost his job. The role Avery was playing on this team is a role more suited for a guy like Rupp.

You have to feel bad for Christensen in all this. The man has been trying like hell to play his way off this team for a long time now and Torts won’t waive him no matter what. Even with Wolski healthy. Does he have pictures of Torts with a goat or something?

While I also agree this is not likely to affect the team, it baffles me that EC is still here. In terms of return, EC gives this team nothing. If Avery’s spot was taken by Mitchell and Rupp, EC never had a spot to get taken away. I don’t understand why he is still here and I stick by an earlier statement that this may be a move to get cap for a future trade.

Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.

I’ll take Rupp over Avery or EC any day! He’s a hard nosed player that is tough, can score occasionally, and isn’t a liability. It’s really EC I could live without. I don’t need to see a flash of brilliance once every 10 games!!! At least Avery is a consistent player. Half the time I don’t even know EC is in the game!!!

Finally, Avery has been a waste of space ever since he came back from Dallas…..

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 1, 2012 12:08 PM EST reply actions

I’ve been watching this team religiously for more than 30 years – and in my recollection there has never been another character on the Rangers during that span quite like Sean Avery… probably never will be in my lifetime. He was the guy every other team despised for various reasons (many of them valid), and let’s face it – it worked for a while and was fun to watch at times. That being said, if our intention right now is purely to win hockey games, there is no place or purpose for Sean on this team other than for sentimental reasons. He was expendable – not because he did anything wrong, but because the team around him has improved considerably since he began his second tour. That’s just a fact – and one we can all rejoice in. No reason to call out or question the fervent Avery fans out there… at times I’ve been one of them – we all have. But today, we’re focused on winning a C*p for the first time in many, many years… and I’m content to close the Avery chapter, thank him for his hard effort & wish him well.

Done. Now let’s please just move on.

Esa was a fantastic agitator and usually did it cleanly… though rarely a game-changer in that respect. Understand, I’m not saying Sean was the best villain we’ve ever had… just uniquely entertaining.

I may be wrong on this..

but didn’t we start to turn this season around and win right around the time Avery came back??? The truth is NY’s love affair with Avery is because he is a hockey bad-ass, and NY loves hockey bad-asses who like to cause trouble. Only problem is torts doesnt want a trouble-maker or a bad-ass on “this team” or “NYs team” because it is “his team.”

It may have started when he arrived, but it sure didn’t need him throughout the ride.

I see this a lot on the boards for the less-informed (NY Post comments, etc) and need to point out that the 7 game win streak that Avery supposedly “brought” started 2 games before he stepped foot on the ice, and our winning ways continued once he was scratched so I am not buying it.

by BigB22 on Jan 1, 2012 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with your post Brandon though disagree with some of the reasoning.

We have a lot of role players, but I don’t think Avery’s role has ever been competing with Rupp.. Rupp is an enforcer and a deterrent and while Avery is “gritty” I do not think he would deter even the smallest opposing player from making a cheap shot. I guess Rupp has a small agitation component to his game that is of course Avery’s bread and butter.

Avery’s biggest assets, and ones pointed to by supporters, are his energy and forechecking. It is Hagelin, not Rupp or Mitchell, that eliminated Avery’s spot on the roster. Hagelin is better at both of these skills and is a great defender on a defense-first team. Mitchell and Rupp serve different functions that I do not see Avery competing for.

I see a ton of comments from die-hard supporters saying that Torts is making this a 100% personal decision and he should be fired. I have to immediately write off these commenters as morons. If Ovechkin has a personal problem with the coach, maybe you fire the coach. No coach is getting fired over a 4th line player.

def a bummer.......

as big a Avery fan that I am,it does make sense. Rupp is a character guy and you need that in the locker room for cohesiveness (sp?). We seem to have the majority of all the pieces you need to have a cup team, just looking at our roster, its very clear. Also, you can tell our team is tighter then they have been( a cohesive unit) in as long as I can remember, aside from our ‘94 team, but this team is built from the ground up,far different, anyway I don’t think Avs helps at all in what I’m talking about,I know he’s tight with Hank and Voros, etc but thats not enough,no individuals here anymore. Not only does he have to deal with Torts’s wrath, but Richards was embarrassed by him when he was in Dallas too.Damn shame, when he came back up and scored those goals I was bouncing off the walls.
I wish him the best and I’ll follow him……..until he goes full-time fashionista.
It’d be great if a NHL team did pick him up (Larry Brooks has a great point that the islanders are a “no-brainer”) I thought it was cool playing against him when he was on Dallas,he didnt let up at all. AVERY! AVERY! AVERY!

NICE STORY

I wish every Ranger fan can read this and quit whining about Avery.. I like Sean and his antics were fun to watch, but clearly no spot on the roster for him with Mithcell’s play and Rupp healthy.. I just scratch my head when I hear people say that Avery deserves the spot over Mitch, I mean are these people watching the games?

by ImMike88 on Jan 1, 2012 4:52 PM EST reply actions

Good move

I’m all for the demotion of avery. As a lot of people have been saying in the comments, there is just no room for him anymore. Rupp is fitting the role of “tough guy” perfectly. Prust is a great third line player, there will be room for avery somewhere else, just not in NY.

ThankYou

Thanks for the effort Sean. You always gave 100% effort even when many of your teammates did not. You brought inspiration and hustle to very game you were allowed to play in.
Best wishes and I hope you get picked up ( by a west coast team).

After we lost to Buffalo and made what’s his name an invisible, not motivating captain of this hockey team and after jager split for Europe, Avery and Prust molded this team into the gritty, hard working club we are today. The Ranger’s used Sean and kicked him out the back door. All is fair in love and war. What surprises me is not that he can’t find a roster spot on this team, but that no other bottom 20 club in the NHL wouldn’t want a guy who will definitely be a fan favorite, help them sell tickets and bring a warrior spirit to the ice night after night. I am more interested in winning a cup than keeping him here on sentimental grounds, but Sean is definitely an NHL caliber hockey player.

Avery is a perfect example of someone who burned too many bridges. I agree with you – Avery could be a solid bottom 6 forward for a lot of teams!

one huge thing you forgot to mention Brandon

It’s his contract that doomed him. When staal comes back the rangers will be tight up against the cap. Avery although better than EC is too expensive to keep in the press box. I saw the writing on the wall when wolski was due back. Unfortunately for Avery the numbers game, contract, and coach worked against him when it came to who gets sent down.
While I love the energy and effort he gives, it was the right move. The only hope for him is he lights it up for the whales and forces his way into the roster via injury
