Rangers Vs. Coyotes: Rangers Top Coyotes In Shootout To Win Five Straight

The New York Rangers got their fifth straight win tonight with a 2-1 shootout victory of the Phoenix Coyotes. Although it was a fairly easy night for Henrik Lundqvist, he had to make a few great saves tonight, including locking it down in the shootout. Derek Stepan was credited with the shootout winner tonight, with a great shot over the glove of Mike Smith.

Just two minutes into the first period, Mike Rupp and Paul Bissonnette dropped the gloves right off a face-off. Rupp got some good punches in early, as well as Bissonnette. It's also worth noting that the Rangers are undefeated when there is a fight in the opening five minutes of a game. The Rangers had handfuls of chances in the first, and Mike Smith was up to the task on all of them.

While the game was pretty even in the physical department, the Rangers had a clear cut advantage offensively. Henrik Lundqvist made some great saves on the Coyotes five shots. The Rangers outshot the Coyotes 12-5 in the first period of play.

Follow after the jump for more.

Star-divide

In the second period the Rangers came out with some speed once again. They again had tons of chances, but there was a man named Mike Smith still in the way. With about five minutes left in the period, the Rangers would gain their first power play of the game, as well as the only penalty called this game so far.

However, the Rangers struggled big time, and were unable to even gain the zone on the Coyotes. Derek Stepan had the lone shot on the power play when he broke down the wing on Mike Smith. Stepan let go a quick wrist shot, but Smith once again, snagged it with the glove. Even with the Rangers outshooting the Coyotes 21-10, the score still remained tied going into the locker rooms.

Finally, just two minutes into the third period, Ruslan Fedotenko put the Rangers on the board. Brian Boyle did a great job in front of the net, and put up a monstrous screen on Mike Smith. However, just under ten minutes later, Radim Vrbata notched his 20th goal of the season. It was a bit of a defensive lapse, as Vrbata was left wide open in the slot, nothing Henrik Lundqvist could do.

The game would need to be decided in overtime, where Marian Gaborik would eventually be awarded a penalty shot. However, Mike Smith continued his solid play, and made a sprawling save to keep the game tied. The save by Smith could easily be the save of the year, wow what a save.

Overtime solved nothing, and off to the shootout we went. After three shooters missing, Vrbata scored once again, and left it up to Marian Gaborik. On his second attempt on Smith, Gaborik slipped the puck five-hole to tie it. After another two rounds of saves, Derek Stepan came in and shot the puck over the shoulder of Smith. I called it since the beginning of the shootout, the only way to beat Smith is with a quick shot, and Stepan did just that.

It was all up to Henrik Lundqvist to turn down the captain of the Coyotes, Shane Doan. Doan made a move to the backhand, and Lundqvist stuck with him the entire way. The Rangers would win up winning their fifth straight game in dramatic fashion.

The Rangers next game will be at home once again, this Thursday against the Ottawa Senators.

Good win

but a game like this makes me think adding a depth scorer at the deadline would help a lot down the stretch. This one shouldn’t have been so close.

Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the oppositions goaltender. Mike Smith was lights out till Feds goal and the 2 shootout goals he gave up. Give him credit for the big paddle save on Marion Gaborik’s penalty shot.

I thought he was dead in the water till he kept his stick where Gabby was gonna shoot it.

PP

I feel like our problem on the power play isn’t anything with personal or even positioning, its just a simple matter of gaining the zone! I feel like every power play starts with a faceoff loss and then the next 1:25 is spent trying to work it through the neutral zone.

Usually they lose the puck right at the blue line two times before they can establish some sort of attack. As a sidenote, watched the game on phx local tv out here in zona and their broadcast team is brutal

phx feed

agreed. i was streaming the phx feed since i’m a time warner customer and their commentators know nothing about hockey. one guy was going off about the penalty shot call saying that Aucoin only “tapped” Gaborik with the stick, and didn’t hook him.

by jectalo on Jan 11, 2012 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

I mean it really was just a tap, it was a weak penalty shot call in my opinion. If anything a two minute slash minor.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 11, 2012 7:40 AM EST up reply actions

+1
I thought it was a very weak call particularly at that point in the game. If were reveresed we would all be screaming.

The hook may have only been a tap, but it appeared to knock the puck off of Gabby’s stick, thus preventing him from scoring (which I think he would have done). Penalty shot is justified.

I think had he gotten off any semblance of a shot it would have been just 2min. But he didn’t even get a sniff when he was on a breakaway due to the infraction..PS called.

If it had just been 2min I don’t think I would have been up in arms. Sometimes that calls go in your favor and sometimes they don’t. This time we got one.

Penalty shot call aside (I think it could have gone either way actually), the phx broadcasters were just plain awful in their lack of hockey knowledge. my three year old daughter could have called a more insightful game than these idiots.

They were acting as if it were a game 7 Stanley cup final thriller. Laughable at some points.

THE WRONG GUY RUNNING IT

we gotta get someone else to coach the pp. with our firepower it’s unbelievable how bad we are. let sullivan run the d and do some filing in the office and turn the pp over to someone else. maybe we should bring someone into the organization to teach the pp during practice.

I’d have gone with the title “Rangers beat Coyotes 1-1 for 5th straight”

they really did dominate this game tonight, Mike Smith and puck luck was the difference tonight

I agree, they were doubling up the the Yotes in shots through two periods. Smith played like a man possessed tonight.

They sure did. They’re going to have nights the puck doesn’t go in, but you’ll take this performance every time.

what were the final tally in scoring chances

I know that a very rough estimate the Rangers had about 3-5 solid chances per period

I had 18-10 NYR on first pass, I think I only had one or two to double check. By period it was 10-4, 3-1, 4-3, 1-2, IIRC

I’m looking forward to this leafs game Saturday, we’re 0-2 against em so far and I don’t like it at all, Boston has dominated those guys, that’s a must win game Saturday

With a win thursday, we finish the first half of the season with 60 points and technically on pace for 120 point season… Even though unlikely, when the hell was the last time we could even say that?

If the rangers go .500 the rest of the year

Which I think we’ll agree is pretty much a worst case scenario, given their all around depth and dynamic goaltending, the team would still finish with 100 points, comfortably in a playoff position.

Sather got fleeced.

He’s been a monster since the trade 6 goals and 2 assists in 21 games. Last year in 70 games he had 2 goals 10 assists for Fudgie.

The POS Bouchard we got in return has 3 goals & 7 assists in 25 games but is probably sixth in line for call up among forwards.

good win- I have a few gripes since I am a Time Warner customer-I watch their NHL live channel

good lord are those guys on NHL live are horrid ‘experts’.
I hate how no one gives the Rangers credit for what they’ve done. If we do what us fans hope to do, is this team ever going to get the credit they deserve?

I also dislike how they only showed the Rangers’ highlights once on all the sports channels. so frustrating! I miss our broadcasters who actually know something about the sport they announce.

@gabby the gutless sniper-

I hope you’re being sarcastic. every GM makes bad moves once awhile, let’s see if Kundratek actually performs before we bash Sather. just enjoy the Rangers’ ride and give credit when Sather deserves it!
