Erik Christensen Assigned To Connecticut On Conditioning Stint

The New York Rangers announced today that forward, Erik Christensen, has been assigned to the Connecticut Whale for a conditioning stint. Christensen has been scratched for awhile, and has not be getting any playing time what-so-ever. There was talks that both Wojtek Wolski and Christensen would be sent down just to get some playing time under their belts again.

Although, Christensen did have to accept the assignment, he accepted it to finally get back to playing hockey. Here is what Christensen said following the assignment, "I love hockey and I want to play. It hasn't been a lot of fun to be bag-skated the past month. I'm just looking fwd to playing again."

It is believed that Wojtek Wolski was not assigned to do the uncertainty surrounding Brandon Dubinsky. Dubinsky injured his shoulder last night, but did return shortly after. However, Dubinsky was sore today and will remain a game-time decision for tomorrow.

Follow after the jump for the official press release. Also be sure to check out how Brandon ranks the active New York Rangers roster.

NEW YORK RANGERS TRANSACTION UPDATE

Erik Christensen Assigned to Connecticut on a Conditioning Stint

New York, January 11, 2011 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Erik Christensen has been assigned to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL) on a conditioning stint.

Christensen, 28, has registered one goal and four assists for five points in 20 games this season. He recorded four points (one goal, three assists) in a three-game span from October 31 vs. San Jose to November 5 vs. Montreal. Christensen is tied for third in the NHL all-time in shootout game-deciding goals (11), ranks ninth in shootout goals (24) and ranks fifth in shootout shooting percentage (52.2%) among active skaters with at least 10 shootout attempts. He has not dressed in 20 games this season, including each of the last 10 contests. His last appearance was on December 17 at Phoenix.

The Edmonton, Alberta native was acquired by the Rangers on December 2, 2009, claiming him off waivers from Anaheim. He was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins as a third round choice, 69th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

EC would be a great player if he got a brain transplant.

seriously, my dog has more hockey sense.

Is hockey hard? "I don't know, you tell me. We need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But we need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill us, oh yeah did I mention that this whole time we're standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick? Is ice hockey hard? I don't know, you tell me. Next question."

Um . . .

. . . I think EC’s hockey sense isn’t too awfully bad. It’s his effort — or considerable lack thereof — that irritates me.

Speaking of dogs and hockey sense, has any of you ever played floor hockey with your hound? It can be sooooo much fun. I have thought of taking mine out on a pond, but just couldn’t risk a skate injury to those exposed paws.

I like Bryz. I personally hope he stays in Philly for the length of his contract.

Good for NYR bad for Philly.

He would literally have to exceed all expectations in order for that deal to come out as a positive which is impossible.

WW has too much talent to be in the AHL. Throughout his entire NHL career, he has always been in the top third OR better stat wise, of all left wingers. After his injury, he had two or three games where he looked like he was going to break out, before the injury took over again. Unfortunately, he injured his way out of the line up. I like WW, but if I had to choose, lets say, the Sea Hag, or J Mitchell, it is no choice. The youngsters have played well. WW also produces well in the playoffs. Would love to see him get a real chance, at least ten games or so, to see if he has the Ranger attitude in him. He can add way more than EC. If you look through his career stats, they are nothing to sneeze at.

Just in case anyone is unfamiliar with the rules of sending a player down for conditioning...here it is.

A player who has been on IR or otherwise incapicated (and the team must be able to demonstrate cause) can agree to be assigned to an affiliate for a conditioning stint that cannot last longer than 14 days. At the end of the 14 days, the player must either return to the NHL roster or be placed on waivers to remain with the affiliate.

Enjoy.

I’m sure you cut+pasted that, and I know what they meant, but, “incapicated” isn’t even close. They must have just been like, “in – ca – … in – ca … oh, f*ck it.”

Funny...

Funny how this guy has all this skill yet can’t mesh with any player or any system in the league. Let’s see, they paired him with Crosby and he couldn’t score. Then they paired him with Kovalchuck in ATL and he couldn’t score. Then Gaborik, let me see, couldn’t score! The thing that bothered me is the 9 lives Torts gave him over a younger better more able talent like Zuccarello. Now zuccarello goes down to the minors and gets brutalized by AHL thugs twice his size who will never make it to the NHL and injured 2 times because of it! Duh!!!!

'Cause Brawndo's got electrolyes....

by Tim-May on Jan 12, 2012 11:31 AM EST reply actions

Well, to be fair, besides Prospal and arguably Avery, before this year Christensen played better with Gabby than just about anyone else.

Also, you need to look at cap hit and potential. Christensen knows what he is, a waiver wire played who can step in and play some decent minutes and contribute when he’s on his game. He knows his role as an extra forward, and costs less than a million.

Zucs on the other hand, has a good future ahead of him, and needs ice time. Torts felt he couldn’t get him ice time, which is fair because we have a solid team and he doesn’t fit too well, so he did the right thing in sending him down to the minors so he can improve his game, gain experience, and eventually get a shot somewhere else.

There are a lot of teams in the league that would love to get a shot to develop Zucs, and they will after this year, as there is no way Zucs stays here. For that reason we should try to trade him at the deadline for a guy like Boyes or Doan or Prospal, etc.

Regardless, right now he would be an extra forward, and for that role, Christensen is cheaper. The reason for Avery being sent down is similar. In a salary cap world, you don’t want to use up too much cash on your healthy scratches.

I just wish Sather figured that out, because while an extra 500k for guys like Boyle and Rupp seems harmless, it adds up. Essentially, take out Wolski’s 3.8, and add an extra mil from overpaying guys, and we could have a guy like Lucic, Penner, Hemsky, Boyes, Doan, Neal, Stewart, Oshie and the like.

That’s the difference between a very good team and a great team.

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
