Bantering Points: Awards And Free Agents
Since we are around the halfway point of the season, many hockey writers are offering their thoughts on who would win the NHL awards if the season ended today.
First of all, let me say it is awesome that the Rangers are in first when these articles are being written.
Anyway, here are the articles:
Puck Daddy Midseason Awards and Superlatives
Puck Daddy Midseason Fantasy Hockey Awards
Another observation I made last night was that Brandon Prust will be a free agent at the end of the season. I wonder if the Rangers will hurry to bring Prust back, or look elsewhere for possible scorers and all around players. I hope Prust is back.
Here is a list of the 2012 free agents, who would interest you among this group?
Other questions of the day:
Assuming the Boston Bruins are the best team in hockey, who is second? If not, who is first and why?
How would you rest Henrik Lundqvist for the playoffs down the stretch? Bench him more or less?

I think there is a good chance that Prust comes back. After this season I don’t see he getting that big of a raise, at least not something that cant be managed. He plays a solid 4th line role and can even be slotted on the 3rd.
As far as UFA intrest:
Parise (If he makes it to UFA and we can swing it cap wise)
Suter (see Parise)
Ruttu (depends on price)
Boyes (see Ruttu)

Would you trade Dubi or Girardi this summer to land Parise?
Given depth at wing and d i would think about it.

The question is
Would Lou trade Parise (or his rights) to the Rangers. The two teams have never made a trade with each other.

Easy question to answer. No way Lou would do that.

I don’t think we can afford to get rid of Girardi just yet. That would force us to bump Sauer up to the 1st pairing, keep Stralman at 2nd and keep Bickle as 3rd. As well as the D plays as a group, it would be a step down. My gut feeling say we might go deep this year but next year (12-13) we should have a better chance. The year after (13-14) we will have Girardi on the last year of his contract before UFA and McD and Sauer as RFA and Staal being a UFA the year after Girardi. I think a decision will need to be made then (2013-2014) on the plan going forward. We will also know more about McIlraths development and where he slots in on the right side.
Im not sure you need to dump Dubi to sign Parise. We should have almost $16m in cap space (of course the new CBA can change that) with really only Prust and Biron to sign as UFA. Say they both get a bump to $1m, that still leaves $14m with MDZ, Stralman and Bickle to sign as RFA. $1.2m for Stralman, $800k for Bickle leaves $12mil left to sign MDZ, Krieder and other entry level contract. More than enough to sign Parise.

I would trade Dubi if I could get Parise. At this point I would not let Girardi go to get Parise. Girardi has proven himself to be a top notch defenseman. You can only hope that upcoming prospects pan out to be as good as him.

I am not getting it, why would you have to trade a player to sign one as a UFA?

We wouldnt have to trade for him.
But we would need to shed salary beyond expiring contracts. Hence the question of moving Girardi or Dubinsky in the offseason and signing Parise as UFA.

Guys that might not be bacK:
Wolski 3.8
Avery 1.9375
Feds 1.4
EC 0.925
Eminger 0.800
Stralman 0.900
Woywikta 0.650
Drury’s buy out goes to 1.67 from 3.71

Those numbers are gorgeous when u realize ur losing almost no one who actually plays
by teknics on Jan 12, 2012 10:04 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Exactly.
Feds is the only one of the forwards who even consistently dresses for games.
2 of Eminger/Stralman/Woywitka are redundant when the blueline is at full health this year and all are probably surplus to requirements next year if Erixon sticks with the big club.
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jan 12, 2012 10:08 AM EST up reply actions
Keep in mind that Avery is not on our NHL roster right now (and wouldn’t fit under the cap, right?), that Feds spot needs to be filled by someone, albeit a cheaper prospect, and that one of those 3 defenseman has a spot (7th?) that also needs to be replaced, probably by a similar salary.
That means the figure above of money being freed up is probably closer to $9m than $12.5m.
Prust, Mitchell, Biron, and MDZ all need to be resigned with raises. I don’t know how much you guys think they realistically will get. Let’s just say $2m, most of which is MDZ with minor bumps for the others?
That leaves you with $7m. On it’s own, $7m would seem like enough to make a big FA signing like Parise (well not quite enough but for someone good), BUT as other pointed out, the following off-season you need to resign: AA, Stepan, Hagelin, McD, and Sauer. Now, who knows if you resign Sauer but at best you break even replacing him with McIlrath. You get the rest of Drury’s contract back, but the point is that those guys are all getting significant raises.
If you want a big name this summer, you definitely need to move a $3-4m contract.
Players on the current roster, under contract for next year:
Gaborik
Richards
Callahan
Dubinsky
Anisimov
Boyle
Rupp
Stepan
Hagelin
Staal
Girardi
McDonagh
Del Zotto
Lundqvist
Plus Drury’s buyout and player bonuses of 612.5K
15 players (9 F, 4 D, 1 G)
total $48.383M which is $15.916M of cap space against the current cap number
I could see:
Del Zotto getting around $1.75M
Erixon making the team at $1.75M
Prust re-signing for a little over $1M
Kreider on an ELC of $1.75M
Those contracts take up about $6.45M
With a need for one more forward and a back up goalie.
If they keep the backup goalie to less than a $1M they can afford a large ticket player for next year. But things could get complicated beyond that and there’d probably be some cap casaulties as a result.
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jan 12, 2012 11:35 AM EST up reply actions
Correction, that should be 14 players, not sure why Cap Geek lists 15
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jan 12, 2012 11:36 AM EST up reply actions
The issue is our 2013 RFAs (as pointed out above)
That will eat up cap space. I dont think you can committ the 2012 space (net of RFA increases) to a $5 million plus salary without shedding a big salary (Dubi/Girardi) to keep flexibility for 13.
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Jan 12, 2012 11:56 AM EST via Android app up reply actions
Nothing at all against Dubi. Its just that I think Parise is a top talent and if we could get him and it meant having to lose Dubi’s cap hit then I would do it.

Brad Boyes intrigues me as trade deadline pick up.
Like him for 3rd line center and sliding Boyle down to 4th. Hesitant on going after him as UFA, pretty steep production slide in recent years.
Anisimov Stepan Gaborik
Dubinsky Richards Callahan
Hagelin Boyes Mitchell
Feds Boyle Prust

With the late season push coming...
I wouldn’t mind seeing Prospal back as a rental. And if they end up blowing up Columbus, it may not take much to get him out of there.
what line would you put Prospal on? Does he bring enough to warrant sitting someone currently in the starting line up?

It would be more of a depth move but a depth player that could play LW on your 1st line, on the PP, as a center in case of injury. To have depth like that would go a long way in the playoffs. Not to mention his leadership, familiarity with team and system. Plug and Play Prospel
Right now you have WW or EC coming off the bench for an injured player. Yikes!

Prust will likely be re-signed. The Rangers have a big RFA class after next season, with McD, Anisimov, Stepan, Sauer, and Hagelin all expiring. That will probably keep them out of the market for the top FAs (like Parise, Suter). A move like Ruutu or Boyes might make sense if Kreider/Thomas/Bourque and whoever else can’t step in and play productive middle 6 minutes.

This about sums it up. Prust will be back; he’s cheap, fills a good 4th line role and plays good defensive hockey and can PK, along with his fighting and seemingly being a great locker-room guy. No reason to let him go.
I don’t think we can afford one of the major UFAs this off-season and still keep everything else. I think McDonagh and MDZ will be getting decent raises this coming year (still RFAs without arbitration rights, but they’re going to get something).
I’m leaning more towards Ruutu at this point with a trade for this season (I think he could slot in at LW on any of our top 3 lines) and a possible extension depending what happens.
I think George hit the nail on the head though.
Someone could overpay for Prust
He is a symbol of this team and an up and coming team could pay premium for that. Would you give Prust 2 years at 1.75 per? Someone might.

Pruster will be back. We let Colton Orr go and I thought that was a mistake. Prust is better than Orr offensively and defensively…and will fight most anyone. I wouldnt mind Ruutu….but instead I’m going to throw this out there…Shane Doan anyone?? He would fit right in with this team. Great leader…great playmaker who can still score…and can be physical. I know it’s all about $$ but I think he could be a nice piece to our puzzle.
by inHANKweTruST on Jan 12, 2012 10:02 AM EST via mobile reply actions
If Doan wants a one year deal then you might consider it. But he’ll have the over 35 cap hit so you’d want to protect yourself against the downside risk of him declining and being stuck with a multiyear deal.
As of now the forwards that will most likely be on the team next year are:
Gaborik
Anisimov
Stepan
Richards
Dubinsky
Callahan
Boyle
Hagelin
Rupp
That’s 9 forwards, and for the most part the top 6 remains intact. Throw Kreider into the mix and that’s 10. Boyle and Rupp would likely comrpise 2/3rds of a 4th line in that scenario. So basically they’re left looking for a 3rd line center and a 4th line wing (I imagine Prust would have the inside track on that job if he doesn’t go searching for the highest contract). I don’t know how or if Doan fits into the picture. I’m not saying they shouldn’t give it some thought, but there’s not an immediate fit ulness they move Anisimov or Dubi back to center the 3rd line.

No, but if anyone wants to trade Sauer and Erixon for draft picks, I know where to find a guy.

I Say It Was Unintentional
I’ll bet he made no connection between the reference to Jared Boll and the inane posts of good ol’ Frankie C, that his choice of words was a mere coincidence, and that he got lucky it turned out to be funny.
Whether this was intentional or not, this is the funniest comment I’ve read in a while

If Jagr is available for around 3
I know its extremely unlikely that he will ever come back to the Rangers, but just imagine what he could teach the young core. Much like Richards has done for MDZ on the point, I think Anisimov and Hagelin, and even Stepan would learn boatloads from him. He is a future hall of famer and it’s hard to say no to that if he is willing.
Rule of 32/2/2
Dont sign any forward over the age of 32 for more than 2 years and 2 million per year.

The problem with signing players is the future repercussions (spelling?) for it.
Right now, it looks like we have cap space, but at the end of next year we have a lot of guys that are going to need raises. That takes us out of the running for a big name, which I’m fine with.
At the end of the day, Antrel Rolle, you don’t want 4 guys on your team making ~$30 million. That’s not a good strategy in today’s NHL, especially with potential injuries.
Now, the deadline this year is different. There are some solid guys available that could do wonders on our second or third line. Since Zucs isn’t coming back next year, we might as well ship him and a pick, etc. for a guy like Doan, Boyes, or Prospal. Also, potentially we could re-sign a guy like that for a moderate amount for 1-2 years, and still have room to keep all of our RFAs.
It essentially would give us regulars of… AA Step Gabby Dubi Richie Cally Hagelin and Doan/Boyes/Prospal. Now for your last 4 forwards, you can rotate some combination of Boyle, Feds, Prust, Rupp, and Mitchell, and potentially Wolski if he isn’t traded. I know WW isn’t the most consistent forward, but with motivational leaders on his line, and at the end of a contract year, he’d work hard.
A line-up of…..
AA Step Gabby
Wolski Richie Cally
Hags Dubi Doan
Feds Boyle Prust
Mitchell Rupp
In the playoffs their are bound to be injuries, and having a deep team with 2 guys that can step in and play would be huge. Assuming Sauer gets healthy in time, I wouldn’t make any defensive moves. That would be my plan going forward.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
