Three Players To Represent The New York Rangers At The All-Star Game

Photo

The NHL released it's finalized All-star game roster this afternoon, and three New York Rangers' players appear on that roster. First we have Marian Gaborik representing the forwards, and well deserved it is. Marian Gaborik currently leads the Rangers with 23 goals, and 11 assists. Marian Gaborik has been lights out this season, bouncing back from his disappointing 2010-2011 season.

Next up we have Dan Girardi representing the Rangers on the defensive end of the game. Girardi has been amazing this season, and stepped up big time in the absence of Marc Staal. We also saw a bit of offensive flash from Girardi early in the season as well, notching three goals, and 12 assists.

Finally, Henrik Lundqvist will be representing the Rangers between the pipes, and it is VERY well deserved. Henrik Lundqvist has always been carrying the Rangers, but this season is by far his best performance. Hank leads the Rangers with an impressive 19-7-4 record this season, and even single-handily won the Rangers games this season.

Well done. I’m happy these three were recognized, ESPECIALLY Girardi.

Hank and Gabs knew they would make it, and it probably doesn’t mean much to them, but I’d bet it means a hell of a lot to a guy like Danny G, who for his entire career has been thought of as a guy who was only good because of his partner.

So when healthy our top defensive pair are both all-stars, and next best 3 guys are all young with a floor of a second pairing player and the ceiling of a first.

If only Girardi could work on that shot and get it on net more. If he could turn into an offensive force with some work this offseason, he could definitely turn into a consistent all-star.

That Girardi is going makes me absolutely thrilled for a really good guy who has stepped up for his team. Congrats to Danny G.

Gaborik deserves it and Hank deserves it. Very happy to have three guys going, not that it really matters though… still, it is nice.

Oddly enough, in years past Girardi used to always get his shot on net. This year is pretty different with him being the defensive anchor.

by Caerid11 on Jan 12, 2012 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah that’s right.

He always had that low, hard shot. It was nothing amazing but at least the damn thing hit the net. It was ideal for creating rebounds and deflections.

Yup, I always remembered him getting the puck, making a quick step left or right and flicking a low, hard snapper at the net. Always seemed to go through. 27 assists last year, I think a bunch were off that shot.

He’s probably involving himself less I’d guess, just trying to keep the puck deep and not taking chances. Probably not getting nearly the offensive zone starts since the loss of the Sauer/McDonagh pair.

It was refreshing

To see someone hit the net from the blueline. Miss those little, heavy snappers.

Would be smart to shake up the offense a little bit by letting Danny G (and others) take some shots from the blueline, especially on the powerplay.

His PP minutes are scant this year, I’d guess at least. Spends enough time doing other things. He’s not superman, he’s GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

by Caerid11 on Jan 12, 2012 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

A Point Man . . .

. . . has several choices.

Go cross-ice to his partner
Pass to the half-boards forward
Send the puck along the boards, deep
Send the puck diagonally to the corner
Shoot toward the net and hope for the best, but risk a blocked shot
Shoot wide on purpose

It all depends, of course. But everything being equal, shouldn’t Girardi et al. think highly of getting the puck to the net?

by cmont on Jan 12, 2012 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Our system

Would lend itself well to a dedication of getting the puck to the net, especially the grinders.

The more shots on net, the happier I will be.

Also, since he is playing so many minutes, especially in the defensive zone, he is bound to be tired whether he admits it or not. I don’t care what type of shape you are in, playing 25-30 minutes in an NHL game every night will exhaust you.

Just like tired players miss free throws more frequently in basketball, exhaustion plays a role in shot accuracy.

Nice to be recognized

I agree with the previous statements. It’s nice to see the NHL get it right with Girardi and select a guy based on merit and hard work.

However, I wasn’t happy to see Ovechkin there because I think the NHL went in the opposite direction with his selection. I don’t think he’s earned a spot this season. He hasn’t really had an All-Star quality year to me. It gets me angry because his selection takes away a spot from another player who may be more deserving. (I’m going to be biased here and elect Richards: he has a similar number of points, better plus/minus, 6 GWG vs Ovie’s 1, and is on a team in first place in the league whereas the Caps are barely holding onto the last playoff spot in the East). This was merely a popularity pick. All-Star selections should be about what the player has done now and not picking them because of past accomplishments.

They got it right with Girardi (Yay!) and wrong with Ovie.

Don’t forget, the all-star game is about $.

Without Crosby, they need someone to be the star. That’s Ovi this year.

Yeah, I’m surprised how much his selection angered me because normally I don’t put much stock in the All-Star Game. I tend to like the skills competition more than the actual game.

For Girardi, just saw this the other day on another board:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIXGhWNiseI

It’s high-time a player got recognized in one of these events for his defensive play. Usually it’s the perennial Norris-type or offensive D who get these calls. He’s earned this.

kudos to all 3. a case could have been made for McD as well, but he’ll have his turn i’m sure.

I personally think that Hagelin should have gotten the nod as one of the rookies for the rookie event.

They’ve voted in guys who haven’t played a game all season in years past. Shouldn’t make a difference.

by Caerid11 on Jan 12, 2012 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Meh, probably. The Rangers are also sending three guys to the All-Star game. The Devils are sending two rookies to the Rookie Event (whatever the hell it is called) and aren’t sending anyone to the game proper.

Oh well.

Used to Be, Long Ago . . .

. . . the defending SC champions played the ASG against a collection of standouts from the other teams. This was before expansion, so there were only a hundred players to select the challengers from — easy to do. Not so easy now. Still, I love the idea. Wouldn’t you enjoy watching the Bruins, a cohesive group, battle the best of the rest?

by cmont on Jan 12, 2012 4:38 PM EST reply actions

The only issue is that it’s a big disadvantage for the SC champs.

They really don’t get a break, and that could prove to be detrimental down the stretch.

The Rangers . . .

. . . do not own the Sanators. The Blueshirts are 1-10-1 against Ottawa in the last twelve games at MSG.

Maybe you belong in a Sanatorium?
