New York Rangers Noon Number: 10

The New York Rangers were the final team in the NHL to lose their 10th game this season, with the decisive loss coming from a 3-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators Thursday night.

The Rangers didn't come to play against a surging Senators team and suffered the price with a tough-to-swallow loss at Madison Square Garden.

The good news? These games have been far and few between. The Rangers are still two points ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers in the Atlantic Division, and also have a game in hand. John Tortorella is apt to be upset with the effort from his team, and will probably make some adjustments in practice.

Still, the way the Rangers have played can't be overlooked because of one bad loss. That's one of the best things about this team, they always seem to learn from their losses and rebound well. They'll have an opportunity to do that when they travel to Toronto.

Although the Blueshirts outshot the Sens most if not all the shots were relatively easy for Andersen to stop. When the other team commmits 2 & 3 men to stop Gabby (zero shots ) then Stepan and Anisimov have to step up.
The most glaring problem is that lately we havent been scoring at even strength. Thus the power play is critical. If the PP does not improve it will be our achilles heel down the stretch and more importantly, in the playoffs.
We seem to have the talent- maybe Torts needs a new PP scheme. Something. Anything wuld be better.

Sullivan is a piece of shit assistant coach.

Why can’t they go out and get a power play consultant…just find the most credible and available powerplay savant with NHL coaching experience and give him 500k to work with the team thru june.

Sullivan is also the Defense Coach, so saying he’s a piece of shit is not entirely accurate, shitty PP coach yes, but not a total idiot… Our Defense is among the best in the league at positioning and blocking shots due in large part to Sully…

What our lines lack is creativity on the PP… you can see a noticeable difference when you watch Pittsburgh even missing all of their guys… they move the puck quick make short concise passes and did i mention they are continually moving…

I think Schoenfeld, if I’m not mistaken, does most of the work with the defense.

by Caerid11 on Jan 13, 2012 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

Hagelin needs to see PP time, his speed causes all kinds of problems for opponents and he’s willing to move unlike some other players on our PP… Our biggest problem is we are too stationary and wait for the passing/shooting lanes to open and they never do thats why a pass or shot turns into a block and clear

I could not agree any more. Although I don’t like dump and chase on the PP, its what we end up doing most of the time anyway and it usually doesn’t work cause we don’t get there first. With Hagelin out there to "chase’ and secure possession down low it may work. I know you then still have to score but if it doesn’t take 1:30 to finally get setup that’s a lot more time for shots per PP.

PP IS A JOKE

PP is not even bad its worse. you can sugarcoat it all you want its really really bad. there is no hope looking at their PP. we need a drastic change. Its absolutly crazy that we are in 1st place in the east with this PP. Imagine if our PP was average.. we’d be unstopable.

PP

no matter what team we play I feel like eavn if that team doesnt score they move the puck better than us. everytime we go on PP i feel like its 2 minutes wasted in a game

Rangers could use another finisher

A great team, but lack the gloves on some nights. They get bailed out by goal tending and defense, but if you don’t score against teams like the Sens—especially in the playoffs—you aren’t going to win.

Boyle is helpless offensively. Stepan and Anisimov need to step-up their game. Hagelin is still a work in progress. Cally and Anismov are a little raw in their finishing ability.

I think adding a nice finisher is important for us. I get what dubi brings us, but our puck possession was fine last night without him. Just sayin’

Defnitely one accquisition away from being a true contender. Last night was a perfect example of what happens when our Defense and Lundquist (primarily Lundquist) have an off night. If Hank doesnt stand on his head, we’re going to be in a tight game. Anderson looked good last night, but would have been a different story if we popped one early on some of those chances. Primary shots were coming, but we werent positioned to take a second or third shot. For example, boyle and hagelins line is probably the best recently at creating scoring chances, but they post up too close to the goal and often miss the rebounds that bouce out past them. Second Sens goal last night, good scoring opp, but puck squirts out in high slot, all three of our fwds on top of the crease, and were in a chase mode to get back on the backcheck. Fedo can’t make it, Boyle had his guy, and boom goal. Boyles doing the right things, cant knock him. but hes got to find a way to bury.

PP seems completely deflated, with no confidence. Girardi should not be out there, period. Hes a lot of things, but not a PP quarterback. Del Z has the skill but still none of our D are a true threat. Teams usually concede the our pointmen knowing that.

Just a thought...

We have got to stop trying to cycle the puck behind the net and along the boards. Every team knows that’s what we (try to) do. New scheme, new tactics are needed.
If we had Gabby, Hags and B Rich on the pp line we have speed, passing and shooting. Maybe we try those three without a dump, chase and cycle and see what it gets us?

sounds good to me, we have the personnel for the most part, aside from a o-minded defensmen. I think as a team we are not the best passers, and thats integral to an effective PP. Passing the puck moves them around and gets them out of position.

LOL one loss and everybody goes apeshit, our PP sucks!!!! it has to get better!!! we can’t keep cycling down low!!!! Mike Sullivan sucks!!!! guys its one loss were still at the top of the conference calm the f*** down.

While I agree about people going overboard, our PP does suck. It has for years now. I haven’t been excited about a Ranger’s PP since Jagr was on our team, which is saying something.

by p-town on Jan 13, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

agreed, even then I didn’t think the PP was any good….

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 13, 2012 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

No panic- its just that if we are going to advance in the playoffs you need to have a strong power play- or at the least one that isnt a limp dick. we are at the top of the league due to Lundquist and our defense first focus- both defensmen and forwards. However, if we had a power play that could get us a goal out of every 4-5 powerplays we wouldn’t have to be so reliant on our goalie and d.

Bostons Bruins, 2010-2011 Stanley Cup Champions

Regular season power play, 16.2% (Rank: 20/30)

Post-season power play, 11.4% (Rank: 14/16)

bruins score at will at even strength though. we need PP goals.

We need better 5v5 and on faceoffs. PP doesn’t win playoffs series, 5on5 does.

Is It in the Genes?

WW was born in Europe but moved to Canada at an early age. Played all his youth hockey in Canada. And didn’t learn, all that while, to take the body?

If he’s playing now for a nice contract, North American GM’s are not gonna like the scouting reports.

Is it in the Genes?

that was ignorant, he probably idolized some European stars as a kid and took to that style of play. A skill game. Stop criticizing him because he’s European and thats why he doesn’t play a heavy contact game, thats just stupid.
