Early Awards Picks
Here are my early awards picks. This is so far this year, not what it'll be at then end of the season.
Calder Trophy Winner - Adam Henrique- He's been a stud for New Jersey
Other Nominees: Ryan Nugent Hopkins, Matt Read
Selke Winner- Jonathan Toews- Simply one of the best 2 way fowards in the game
Other nominees- Pavel Datsyuk. Patrice Beregeron
Lady Byng Winner- Pavel Datsyuk- He always wins this
Other nominees- Jason Pomminville, Louis Eriksson
Norris Winner- Shea Weber- +12 playing 26 minutes a game and lots of points too.
Other nominees- Erik Karlson, Zdeno Chara
Jack Adams Winner- Torts- Very close, but he wins in my opinion
Other nominees- Ken Hitchcock, Kevin Dineen
Vezina winner- Henrik Lundqvist- He's simply been the best
Other nominees- Tim Thomas, Jonathan Quick
Hart Trophy- Evegeni Malkin- I can't stand him, but where would Pittsburgh be without him? 11,12,13 place? And 51 points in 37 ain't bad either,
Other nominees- Jonathan Toews, Phil Kessel
Picks? Opinions?l

Agree with everything except for Karlsson. Frankly I wouldn’t put him in my top 5, and I don’t think if I really thought about it I’d even put him in the top 10. He is not good defensively and I don’t this his offensive skills, as elite as they are, mitigate the liability of his defense. Personally I think Danny G has been better overall I don’t know if I even would nominate him for the Norris; Karlsson has 30 more points than Girardi but he also plays more 2 min more per game on the PP.
Karlsson has a plus-minus per 60 minutes of ice time of +0.90 (the Senators are -0.39 without Karlsson on the ice). That is 19th among defensemen in the NHL, minimum 30 games and 12 minutes per game at 5v5. Of the players ahead of him, there are six Bruins and three Red Wings, plus two Sharks, two Blues, and another Senator (Kuba).
However, the only players playing a shutdown role for their team, like Karlsson is, are Chara-Boychuk, Boyle-Vlasic, White-Lidstrom, and Timonen. All of those players have two-way studs to help them: Bergeron and the Krejci line, Thornton-Marleau-Pavelski, Datsyuk and Zetterberg, and Claude Giroux. Karlsson does not. As far as I know, Phillips is the guy who plays most frequently with Karlsson, and though I like his game a lot, I’d take all of the partners of the D I listed above (save Boychuk; Timonen plays with Coburn) over Phillips.
I’d say Karlsson is doing a very, very good job. Good defensively or not, given the above information, I’d say he mitigates whatever defensive shortcomings he does have by being incredibly dynamic when his team has the puck. He has 44 points in 45 games. I’d say that’s finalist material, easy.

I knew he has stepped up his defense this year
Absolutely a Norris finalist

Fair enough, but I personally don’t consider him a finalist :). I guess its a good thing for Karlsson I dont get to vote for it

Word. Green was in the same situation, had more star power in front of him, and was playing in a weaker conference. If they nominated him, Karlsson will at least get the look

Girardi could win the norris.....
if only he could get 15 goals and 40 points. never would happen. Also, I don’t think any defenseman under Torts could win that. He could give a shit if our defenseman score or not. Their job is just to block shots and keep the puck outta the D-zone
I’d have to give the Hart to Malkin but I hate the whole MVP notion in any sport. Especially hockey, I mean it’s a team effort. I can’t agree with Toews if you take him away I don’t think the team would crumble. I think it would struggle a bit but not be outta the playoff picture.
Is hockey hard? "I don't know, you tell me. We need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But we need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill us, oh yeah did I mention that this whole time we're standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick? Is ice hockey hard? I don't know, you tell me. Next question."

Very true with Torts
Look at Dan Boyle, he was very good with him in Tampa, but he was in his “prime age” then and he was good, but when Torts left as coach his offensive skills definitely took over. Then when he went to SJ? Career years, too bad he was already 33 or so at the time.

the Ranger bias that exists in the league office would never allow it. IF the King gets the Vezina it will be because they will have no choice but to give it to him. my “revenge” against the league and Bettman has been one thing: the Rangers win the Cup and Bettman is forced to hand the Cup over to Cally with 18,000+ Ranger fans booing him unmercilessly.
What does the league office have to with awards voting? Or are you suggesting the GMs that vote for the Vezina are given an agenda?
The awards voted on by the writers have zero to do with the league office.

George, after the Winter Classic officiating and the real lack of media outcry I am totally convinced that Bettman has major influence on the media and how far they go to talk against the league. the league allows media access. they can take it away too. don’t think for a minute that the league doesn’t have influence on the media and how they vote because they do.

Good point, but writers themselves are very good manipulators; they’d probably realize if they league were trying to taint them. I’m sure the league could probably revoke some privileges to those who don’t comply, but the NHL doesn’t really strike me as the totalitarian type.

The only reason RNH does not get the Calder is injury. He was getting well over a pt per game before getting injured. Henrique is a nice player but he is no where near RNH, IMO.
Henrique’s the better player right now. Yeah, RNH was putting up some sick offensive numbers, but he doesn’t have the responsibilities as a two-way player than Henrique has. I know it wouldn’t matter with the voting, but all the same, RNH has some work to do.

I like Henrique very much but look at RNH’s stats game by game. he was off the charts. I don’t think the past voting has taken into consideration 2 way play, lol. that’s a different issue.

Well, they will if it’s close, but I agree, RNH was on pace to win the award. I think it’ll be close now when RNH comes back, and I think Henrique beats him now.

RNH hurt pretty bad so I don’t know even when he comes back if he’s back to form so I believe you are right. it’s Henrique’s to lose at this point.

Hes on Kovalchuk’s line right? Would explain the need to be a 2 way player lol

I always felt Kovy got a bad rep with his work ethic/defense, I personally don’t see him as a liability

He’s being trusted to kill penalties this year for like the first time ever, beyond “hey, we need a SHG badly here” duty.
