Rangers Vs. Predators: Rangers Rebound With Huge 3-0 Win Over Predators

The New York Rangers rebounded from their 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, with a huge 3-0, shutout, victory over the Nashville Predators. Henrik Lundqvist earned his fourth shutout of the season, and the Rangers retained their top spot in the NHL.

After spending the first couple minutes in their own end, the Rangers found a way to put the puck in the net. Dan Girardi notched his fourth goal of the season with a shot that deflected off of the Predators defenseman in front. As I stated in the keys to the game, the Rangers needed to put everything on net, and they did just that.

The Rangers went into the locker room with a huge 1-0 lead, despite being outshot 11-10 by the Predators. John Mitchell struck just ten minutes into the second period, with a great turn-around wrist shot from the slot. This goal was huge for the Rangers as they carried a solid 2-0 lead into the locker rooms.

Follow after the jump for some more.

Star-divide

Nearing the end of the second period, Marian Gaborik was whistled down with a double-minor for high sticking. However, after looking at the replay, Gaborik's stick was never involved in the play, it was the player's own teammate that hit him. The Rangers found a way to kill off the penalty, and got back to even strength in the third period.

After a solid defensive third period, Ryan Callahan broke in on the empty net with just under a minute remaining. However, he was hauled down and the referee's awarded him the goal to finish off the scoring, and give the Rangers a 3-0 victory.

Henrik Lundqvist was SOLID in net tonight, and made some huge saves to keep the Predators off of the scoreboard. The Rangers will have a tough up-coming schedule with the Pittsburgh Penguins this Thursday, then they will head off to Boston to face the Bruins on Saturday afternoon.

Almost as much as I miss Dolan NOT addressing the media. Wish he didn’t say that shit, makes us look like asses.

by BigB22 on Jan 18, 2012 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

I compiled this from two different stories on it
NEW YORK — In a rare, impromptu news conference Tuesday night, New York Rangers owner James Dolan said he feels his Blueshirts are closing in on the Stanley Cup.

Q. What do you think of the way the team’s playing? We haven’t talked to you in a couple of years, and in that time the organization has really turned it around.

DOLAN: [Laughs] ‘This is very spur of the moment. We were just in the coaches’ office and I’ll answer the question…

“I’m very proud of the organization,” Dolan said after the team’s 3-0 win over Nashville. "I’m particularly proud of Mr. [Glen] Sather because all the way back to 2004 when things weren’t going so well and we had a lot of free agents here and we decided to basically re-do the strategy, Glen and I made a pact.

“I gave him something, which I won’t reveal today, but I gave him something to seal the pact. I said ‘You can’t give it back to me until we win the Stanley Cup.’ And I think we’re pretty close to getting that thing back,” said Dolan, who has not addressed the Rangers media since the 2005-06 season.

Dolan went on to laud his general manager for constructing the team the right way — building through the draft and cultivating a foundation of home-grown nucleus players.

“For me it’s all about the system he built. Of course its great coaching, but it’s about the farm system, the scouting system and the development — going with kids — and sticking with that philosophy even at times when it didn’t look so good. So, I’m very proud of him and the organization,” Dolan said.

Q.How much did you know about John when Glen came to you and said this is the guy?

“I don’t think Glen wanted to tell me anything about John. [Laughter]”

Coach John Tortorella’s reaction to that observation?

“We just have to go about our business. I had my owner up here talking about a Stanley Cup, and that’s a bunch of bull[crap],” said Torts after Dolan had vacated the room, to the laughing media.

Sorry I cut and paste different paragraphs from TSN/ESPN and Puck Daddy…

Can we kidnap Dolan and hide him in a warehouse somewhere till after the season/playoffs are over? Can’t afford to have him jinx us saying dumb shit this early in the season.

Funny how Dolan barely mentioned Torts at all as a reason for the team’s success.

by Eastern Impact on Jan 18, 2012 12:59 AM EST up reply actions

Funny how he doesn’t mention the thousands of fans he screwed that can’t watch the fucking games because he’s a money-grubbing whore.

Sorry….I have grown to despise the man.

How could he? He still had his mouth around Sather’s ****

Thank you

so much for saying this. Dolan is the main ingredient for the MSG and Time Warner shitstorm (he fired one of his top guys who did the negotiating and took it over himself, which was absurd). And after 5+ years of drooling over the Knicks he decides “Oh hey, those Rangers are pretty good. I should go put them on a pedestal so if they don’t win a Cup everyone in this organization will look like idiots.” And while I’m glad he gave Slats’ ego a good stroke, he probably couldn’t tell you how Dubi has been playing lately or what kind of a season Boyle is having. He is the farthest thing from a “hands-on” owner I have ever seen. And the fact that he comes out of the woodwork when we’re in 1st place is embarrassing. I’m glad Torts called him out and told him to basically shut up.

Also, if anyone cares, one of my friends is a lawyer for Time Warner and knows what’s going on between them and MSG. Happy to explain.

Any progress from the talks with the attorney general?

by BigB22 on Jan 18, 2012 7:43 AM EST up reply actions

Explain away

I haven’t seen many articles written on the time warner/msg situation. Is it any closer to being resolved? I don’t really know much except that it seems it’s mostly Dolan/MSG that is to blame.

by jectalo on Jan 18, 2012 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

From what I understand, we’re still at an impasse. The story goes something like this:

The main guy under Dolan that handled all the negotiating was told to fire one of his top executives (for some unbeknownst reason….I think there was a major screwup and someone had to go). This left the #1 negotiator having to handle that ex-execs workload and therefore couldn’t handle negotiations. In steps Dolan. This is where things went FUBAR.

Dolan came out hot and asked for an obscene amount of money for MSG to be broadcast on TIme Warner. Time Warner said absolutely not. There was a long, extended battle. Some compromise was finally reached regarding money, but Dolan wanted TIme Warner to keep the Fuse channel (which is run by the same group). Time Warner, knowing that Fuse is a cancer, said no way. Dolan basically said, keep Fuse or we want our originally asking price. Your choice. Time Warner said, that’s a horrible deal. And the standoff ensued.

This all boils down to Dolan’s terrible negotiating. I realize we’re not dealing with peanuts here, but ruining your company’s reputation and relationship is not a smart move.

and of course Stamkos got the ENG in Boston to bump his total to 31.

Haven’t been able to see many games lately but what is up with Gaborik?

offtopic but this caught my eye

3 different Dereks (Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett, Derek MacKenzie) were stars of the game for Columbus tonight, as they each had goals.

Gotta be a first, or something.

R.I.P Derek

Another nice bounceback effort.

And one I actually got to watch (especially after having also gotten to watch that horrid Montreal game).

Essentially everything that led to Montreal scoring goals (poor rebound control, bad defensive positioning, no backchecking) was fixed tonight. However, I do feel that some of that sloppiness was the result of having played 3 games in 4 nights (even the best teams can get fatigued).

At least their schedule up to the Boston game will be more restful.

Officiating was abysmal again

The high-sticking call on Gabby was the worst call of the season….what a joke. The lack of consistency in NHL refereeing is embarrassing to the league. But hey, at least the refs managed to award Cally a goal when he was dragged down heading towards an empty net. I was surprised Cally didn’t get called for a penalty, and that the refs did not award a penalty shot to Martin Erat. But I guess that only happens when Comcast-owned teams are playing the Rangers……

Prole art threat.

Another worst call of the season?? We should just have a top 20 worst calls of the season.

I don't know about the conspiracy theory..

But the Refs are just Bad. I’ve seen lots of teams get screwy calls made against them. Bring Back Kerry Fraser and Mick McGeough.

by Jarett on Jan 18, 2012 9:42 AM EST reply actions

The team didn’t look sharp last night. They were very lucky to come out of the 1st period with a 1-0 lead. They played better in the 3rd but Hank got them there. Nice to have Dubi back although he looked a little tentative. I hope Feds picks it up at playoff time (which is his M.O.) because he’s been doing very little.

by JordyNYR on Jan 18, 2012 11:11 AM EST reply actions

Disagree. They looked sharp, other than the top two lines not putting some in the back of the net. Like the Toronto game, we were dictating play. I was at the game, and the crowd did not have any of that lip-biting nervousness we get when we are playing “lucky”…

by BigB22 on Jan 18, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

You’re certainly entitled to disagree but IMO that kind of effort would not have worked against Boston, Philly, Washington, Chicago, Vancouver and Detroit and probably several other teams. Nashville wasn’t exactly sharp either. Maybe that’s why people weren’t biting their nails. Torts didn’t roll 4 lines like he usually does and Bickel was benched for most of the game because there was some very sloppy play. My point is, that effort by the Rangers is IMO not going to get it done in bigger games or in the playoffs.

Stamkos with 31

Unless Gabby gets an Ovechtrick in one of the next few games, he’s not going to catch our dear friend Steve Stamkos

by Guess Who's Back? on Jan 18, 2012 12:07 PM EST reply actions

Did anyone see Torts whisper something to Callahan, and then both of them laugh hysterically, after Callahan got back to the bench after the EN goal?

I bet he said something like “Glad you didn’t grab his stick with your neck this time!”
