Brandon's Take: The All-Star Game Has Been Handled Almost Perfectly By The NHL
Today it was announced that Zdeno Chara and Daniel Alfredsson are the two captains of the All-Star Game teams. I, for one, think they are two terrific choices for a terrific event.
I love the "fantasy" all-star draft, the mocking of the "Mr. Irrelevant," the possibility of the Sedin twins being on separate teams and all that jazz.
The NHL did not turn the event into something bigger than it has to be, like the MLB did by making the winner of the game get Home Field Advantage in the World Series. Instead, the NHL turned the All-Star Game into the exact opposite: a pickup game between the best of the best in hockey, and Alexander Ovechkin, (Zing!)
The only flaw in the NHL's handling of the game is that the fans get to choose the first six in. Instead, the fans should be allowed to choose the Captains out of the pools, or the Alternates, or something minor.
Regardless of said flaw, the game is nothing more than a fun exhibition. Like many here, I like the skills competition just as much, if not more, but for all that has been said about the NHL's mistakes, this is something they got almost right.

I like the choices for captains...
Alfredsson, a long time veteran who is a fan favorite in Ottawa.
Chara, a former Senator who helped lead the team to the 2007 Stanley Cup finals and was partners with the infamous Wade Redden.
Anyone wanna predict the draft order?
I like the captain choices too. Classy.

You know what would be better?
All of us sign up to vote for the All-Star game… how about 2 of the voters are randomly drawn and those 2 become the Captains for each team. Then they make their picks for the game. You want to make people watch… Imagine having the opportunity to take the stage and draft a team? How about all the discussion on who drafted a better team and why…
Get rid of the Hometown Bias… Get rid of the Teammate Bias… Let the fans really pick the teams…

I like the idea of the captains. One should be from the team hosting the event so that there’s significant home-crowd involvement, and the other from the current Stanley Cup Champion works for me.
The starter voting and ballot-stuffing sucks because it keeps legitimate players who have earned it out of the game. It’s nice to have fan involvement, but maybe they should do something where a team’s standing gives them a certain # of positions on the draftable roster. So if we get 3 spots, then we’d get to vote on the 3 players we want to send. Teams at the bottom get to send 1 player. Obviously some fuddling would have to take place so that there’s the correct # of positions represented (6 goalies, 12 D, 24 forwards, or whatever the All-Star rosters are). Would at least keep them from voting in an entire group from 1 team (Canadian teams cough) as ‘starters’.
What if you are in TB situation and have Stamkos and St. louis who deserve to be there, but your teams position in the standing only dictates you get 1 player…
Instead they need to have a requirement where players must be in the top 20 ranking by position or top 15… and Goaltenders must have X amount of Starts… Eligibility requirements are more suited than by position in standings…
@clalicata17
Nothing was stopping ranger fans from stuffing the ballot box, or any other team for that matter.

League should scrap the game… have a skills competition followed by the winter classic… League has the skill competition int he WC hosting City on the Friday Night Skills Competition, Saturday Night Alumni Game, Sunday WC game…

Another solid idea. The skills competition should really be showcased. The actual all-star game is anti-climatic because it’s meaningless and they don’t want any injuries. The skills competition gives bragging rights, which is huge, and it’s a great way for fans to “get to know” some of the star players as they have helmets off for much of it and some are mic’ed up. They really should do more with that, hell, mic everybody!
Skills should be expanded. Give eveyone a chance at breakaways, hardest shot, etc. Why only 3 from each team?

There is no difference between the NHL All Star Game and all others
They are all a waste of time. Give everyone the weekend off.

who actually watches all star games? These guys play 82 games, like you said, give them a few days off. And if I’m not mistaken, those chosen must play or have to sit out a game after the break? Just silliness.
All Star Games Suck Ass, NHL more than others.
They are non-competitive games that barely qualify as sport. More like controlled entertainment. The play is more like practice scrimmaging than anything else.
The games resembles neither of the highest forms its played at (NHL Playoffs and Olympics). The whole thing is a money making gambit that has no redeaming value.
If you want to make it interesting, put up $25 million to the winning team. Then maybe these shit bag players will show some balls and back check. Eliminate fan voting. Most fans are ignorant assholes that just vote for their home team players because they dont know anything about the game or other teams. Most of them think Corsi and Fenwick are an ambulance chasing law firm they see commercials for in between feeding sessions of fast food and episodes of Storage Wars.
I say screw the All Star Game and sterilize those that support it.

I like the All Star Games...
Only in that it is the only time you see stars from different teams having a good time together, in a game purely for fun rather than say the competitive all star olympic teams. Like the behnd the scenes 24/7 stuff but with all bold names.
i always liked the skills competition,
get guys mic’d up and bullshitting, good times. The game though, meh…

you know what the all star game needs?
some kind of thing with, say, a mascot, or a guardian, if you will, for every team….almost like a super hero
and then at the all star game they’d unveil these ‘guardians’ in a big 3D CGI movie thing, tying the guardians to their teams
that would be the most epic idea ever….too bad the NHL isn’t smart enough to jump on board with something like that

Scott Gomez, the gift that keeps on giving!

I just want them to make the playoffs. Good experience for Erixon and if Sather gets Kreider signed right after the Frozen Four the way he did Hagelin we’ll get to see him im a couple games.

Hockey Prospectus Midseason Prospect Ranking has Erixon #5..but no Kreider.

Kreider’s on his 26-50 list, at #32 to be exact (up from #70 preseason)

I also asked about the other two forwards:
@RangerSmurf: how far off are JT Miller or Christian Thomas from the honorable mentions?
@coreypronman Not far, but they’re not top end prospects

Top 6 potential?
He looks better to me now than Dubinsky did at his age. I vote yes.

Which one? I think Kreider has the potential to hop right onto the top line LW spot next year. I also think that Thomas has the greatest chance to disappoint and never really make an impact. Hope I am wrong.
Kreider = Stud
Thomas = Nigel Dawes
