Reaching out to Blueshirt Banter: Community research project
Greetings, Blueshirt Banter.
I recently started a community research project on Die By the Blade. We got off to a good start but I thought reaching out to other fan-bases would only help. Please follow the jump for details.
What I'm looking for:
Goalies who have suffered a concussion.
What I have so far:
Ryan Miller
March 29, 2011. Source. Source.
November 12, 2011. Source.
Steve Mason
November (?), 2011. Source.
(Also apparently had one in Juniors (date?) - see above source.)
James Reimer
October 22, 2011. Source.
Rick DiPietro
March 13, 2007. Source.
February 4, 2011. Source.
October 12, 2011. Source.
Al Montoya
December 20, 2011. Source.
Josh Harding
(Date?) 2011. Source(?)
November 28, 2004. Source.
Jonas Hiller
January 30, 2011. Source.
(It was never officially announced as a concussion (it was later announced as vertigo after he had recurring symptoms), but if it waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck...)
Ondrej Pavelec
October 8, 2010. Source.
Mike Smith
January 4, 2007. Source.
February 3,2008. Source.
Dan Cloutier
October 29, 2005. Source.
Jocelyn Thibault:
March 9, 2003. Source.
Mike Richter:
(Date?) 1998. Source.
March 22, 2002. Source.
November 5, 2002. Source. Source.
December 12, 2002. Source.
April 5, 2002. Source. Source.
Mike Vernon:
December 20, 2000. Source.
Jamie Storr:
December 11, 1999. Source.
Jacques Plante:
March(?) 1958. Source.
How to help:
In the comments, please respond with the goalie's name, the date of the incident, and a source. If you can only provide one or two of the three, that's fine. Every bit helps.
Also, anywhere you see a (?), that means I need a clarification - such as a date or source.
Thanks in advance.
PS: If this should have been a Fanshot, I apologize. I looked for a posting guide but didn't find one.

I'll bite....
On Jonas Hiller: he didn’t suffer a concussion, he actually was diagnosed with vertigo (trust me, vertigo is NO joke; I suffer from it).
For an official link to follow, try this:

Thanks for reponding.
I read that they announced it as vertigo but there seemed to be a lot of doubt about the initial injury. After reading up on it and using my own interpretative lens, it seems like he suffered an initial, partial concussion that went un-diagnosed (or at least wasn’t announced). Upon returning to game-action, he suffered recurring symptoms that were diagnosed as vertigo. Basically I think the partial concussion + physical activity = vertigo.
Either way, I think it’s close enough to be included in the discussion and I’ll add a note about the vertigo.

My intentions aren’t to be rude, but unless you are a doctor (who examined him, to boot) I would leave the diagnosis to the pros. I totally understand you’ve noted that it wasn’t, and perhaps hoping for more sample size, but if you want integrity in this project I think it’s important to stick with facts.
I don’t have insight to other instances, but an interesting topic. Keep us posted with your findings!
I'm not just making a list to see how many goalie concussions there have been.
It’s going to be much more involved and in depth then a simple list. Hiller’s particular case will be noted throughout and analyzed separately from the confirmed concussions.

I had a hunch there was more to it, with the word “project” in your title. Just wanted to emphasize that sentiment and offer an objective view. I tried to suggest I meant well, and it seems you picked that up. You never know who’s behind things like this and it would be far from the first time a study “manufactured” results.
Good luck with your research.
Mike Richter and Jamie Storr.
Richter, 36, missed all but 13 games last season following a seemingly minor concussion on Nov. 5 against Edmonton.
His concussion happened Nov. 5th, according to ESPN.com

I remember the Rangers lighting him up for a bunch of goals and then learning later that he was suffering a concussion.

I'm only considering NHL.
Mostly because of availability of stats. Thanks though.

Vezina has to count for something ;)

I hear you but the concussion happened after he was out of the league.
Now if he ever made it back to the NHL that would be a different story.

Jocelyn Thibault (formerly of the Nordiques baby!)
Thibault sustained a mild concussion March 9 against Boston. He has suffered symptoms of that concussion off and on since then and reported them again after Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

I think this is going to be difficult for a couple reasons
1) It’s hard to find info from 20 years and beyond
2) It wasn’t until about 10 years ago that people really started diagnosing concussions and players coming forward with concussions.
"Anson Carter is a highly skilled, versatile player who we feel will play a very significant role on our team this season. He is a very intelligent player who brings a strong presence and leadership qualities." - Sather
"He's the best first passer in the game. He moves the puck up exceptionally."- Sather on signing Wade Redden
"If you look through the NHL, there aren't many players with his type of ability; he has superstar ability."- Sather on signing Vladimir Malakhov

That's why I'm reaching out to other SBN blogs.
Die by The Blade did a really good job but it’s a lot easier to remember concussions to your team’s players then it is to remember concussions that have happened to other teams’ guys.
