Rangers Vs. Penguins: Rangers Fall To Division Foe 4-1
Perhaps they were looking ahead to the next opponent, or they just simply couldn't get the pucks in the net, but the New York Rangers lost tonight 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Penguins were led by the fantastic goaltending by Marc Andre Fleury, along with the offense provided by Evgeni Malkin, who scored the third goal, and the game clinching empty net goal.
The lone goal for the blueshirts came from the Hagelin-Stepan-Gaborik line, as Gaborik sent a perfect pass to Hagelin who netted it in.
For the Penguins, the other goals came off the stick of Chris Kunitz, and on a pretty shot by Richard Park. For some reason I don't get too angry when Richard Park scores goals, but when it's against the Rangers down with the man!
Tough loss for the Rangers, but the next game is an even bigger one. New York will travel to Boston to take on the defending Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins on Saturday.

Anisimov hasn’t gotten a point for 13 games…. scratch him. Let the players fight for their play time.
No one called for Dubi or Boyle to be benched.
Just remember that.

Not like this.
And he wasn’t down to playing 6 mins either.

It was one game. He played almost 12 against the Pens. AA went from about 16 to 6, Dubi went from about 19 to 9 for one game. Same thing.

I suppose.
12 is still low even, for a guy like AA. Plus, there is just a general dislike for him on this site.
I suppose the fans are just frustrating me all season with this “3rd liner” nonsense for these guys that are putting up 45-50 points a year.
If that was a teams third line, they’d win the cup every fucking year.

Nah why mess up a good thing with Stepan. The whole thing was we were rolling 4 lines deep and every line was good. It all comes back to the same problem. We need some scorers. Where do we get it from come deadline is a whole other topic. I for one am cool with sticking with our guys but reality is we need more guys like….dare I say it…like malkin….guys who crave to get on the ice. Someone like ovi and malkin and crosby who say hey coach let me go on I’m fired up. I’m still not nervous about there recent play but still going to be really challenging come long run. Staal had some brain farts tonight but shit happens he’s still an awesome defensman working himself back to elite level again. This team is good but to be the best we need more guys who can hit the net rather then the back glass/boards , high in the air.
Oh well we move on. Let’s kick some B ass Saturday

Quick example they said gaborik wouldn’t of passed if he realized that was prust not hagelin. Are we to maybe think players arent trusting there teammates more? Hope not

In my opinion Stall has had enough time back not to be making the kind of lazy, idiot mistakes that he is. Let’s face it, Stall’s play has been atrocious. He’s hurting the team more than helping it at this point.
The Staal play that really doesn’t sit well with me is the 1st Geno goal. Staal is coming into the glass, and seems to tense up and listen for the footsteps. That’s something he’s got to get over, and your not just going to “get the rust off”. It’s more about him changing the way he makes that play, and being comfortable that he can protect himself.

Can you tell me what Del Zotto was trying to do there? Why did he not defend and instead attempt some pee-wee inspired diving play? That was a very odd decision there. Its almost like he threw in the towel.
All of our defensemen dive at pucks in that situation. Every one of ’em.

I went back and watched it a few times on the DVR and I still could not understand why Malkin was not defended in a normal way, i.e. body or stick checking. There was not one person in the Garden that did not know that Malkin was not taking that right to the net.
Really watch Girardi closely one day and count how many times he slides/dives/etc to get at pucks, especially in transition.
I’m telling you, that’s something the coaching staff is teaching them.

Sometimes it’s a smart play, and let’s face it, Girardi is a smart cookie, especially when it comes to poke-checks and the like, so he gets away with it. That MDZ play was abysmal. If they’re being coached to just snow-angel anytime they need to play D, then whoever is coaching that needs to be shot.
Purinton has it right, you do it to block a pass, break up an odd-man rush…not against a skill guy like Malkin. He’s a lefty coming in from the right side, which means he’s limited in his options if you come out after him.
I agree here. I’d also say the 1st goal was sort of a coaching philosophy thing. Girardi goes for the hit in the neutral zone, and doesn’t get all of the guy. Girardi knows he’s going to miss that one as soon as he makes contact. He should have grabbed the man and taken the penalty. Torts would have flipped out though.
by BuckarooClub on Jan 20, 2012 12:38 PM EST up reply actions
It’s easy to say that because of the concussion, but if that’s Girardi, that’s not what it looks like to me. The puck took an odd bounce off the boards, he tried to stop with his skate but was too slow to react to it.

You could be right
IMO he seems to take his focus off it for a second and that’s when the bounce runs away either way, I wasn’t so much blaming him for the play as saying there might have been some other things at work. If it’s a bad bounce that happens, and wouldn’t agree with hanging that on Staal anymore then I’d agree when people try to blame another D man for a goofy bounce. It’s something that happens.
If he WAS hesitating because of the situation, it’s something people should be working with him on. Get him to make sure he feels comfortable and safe coming out of the corner with the puck, and making sure were not putting him out there in situations where that can hurt us until he’s comfortable. There’s no need to force Staal back into the lineup. We’re going fine defensively, and he’s not giving us the shot from the point we lead. Let the guy take his time, get his bearings and figure things out. I’d rather have him be hungry for more ice, then forced into too much.
by BuckarooClub on Jan 20, 2012 12:35 PM EST up reply actions
It’s a fair assessment, just saying I don’t think that’s even a consideration if it’s not Staal there.
I agree on the general picture…too much ice time too quick and he’s not playing anywhere near the level he’s shown capable of to justify it so far.
I will say, I don’t understand the Staal-MDZ pairing. Ignoring that now you have MDZ playing the off-side, Staal’s trying to be very active offensively as he gets going, you can’t have two d-men like that. MDZ was at his best with Sauer who covered up everything else. If they’re going to use that pairing, they need to reign in Staal, which is fine for now while still recovering, but won’t be long term.

Player consistency
The team is consistent while the players are not.
Luckily this applies only to our offensive players.
Remeber how the Sedin’s cooled off during the cup finals? Everyday, our players need to bring it. *Boyle Gabby Richards Anisimov
Coaching
Is no one addressing the fact that our Power Play is still horrendous. Can I start the fire Mike Sullivan campaign? The guy is ruining everything
Maybe try different line..with Richards.....
Torts may try for a few games play Richards with Gabby and Hegelin, and put Stephan with Dubi and Callahan..just for a few games…to see if it works and if they can develope mutual chemistry…just a thought..Go Rangers!!!
Along these lines, try putting a few of the old lines back together. Dubi-AA-Cally
Agree with Hags-BR-Gabby
Just throwing these out there….
Mitchell-AA-Cally
I know many of you hate WW, but he should be given several games to show if he can play here or not, and not 5 minutes a game either.(After supposedly correcting "personal problems over the off season, injuries, etc.)
WW-Boyle-Cally ??
Well maybe we have been a little spoiled so far, a mid season slump can be expected. I for one am not worried. I would just like to see everyone show up for every game.
Revamp the entire power play. Maybe (The players) put up a bonus of 10 grand( Insert your own incentive here :)) to whomever scores the next PP goal.

Problems the Rangers are Having...a Mid Season Slup
1. PP. this is one area of the game where a coach can have the greatest influence and is flat out sucks. There is no movement , picks or screens .
2.Staal. The guy has been awful since coming back .-4 in 9 games.
3. Lack of Production 5vs5. All lines the greater onus falls on the high $ players. Wish we had a Team with all Hags. The guy is Fire.
4. Not winning the battle for the puck down low or along the boards.
5. Lack a breakout with a successful transition into the offensive zone. I feel depending on the line combos they should both dump it in and carry but be based on match up and personnel.

scoring
we’ve scored 8 goals in the last 6 games. its been 10 games since we’ve scored 4. yes, its been a great year, better than i could’ve imagined so far.boyle, prust, fedetenko, rupp and mitchell are all 4th liners.the power play is poor, so are our scoring chances. i hope its just a slump but why not try wolski and give him some minutes. is mza still injured? I don’t want to go the trade route.whoever posted and compared hagelins hair the other day to gene carrs hair still got me laughing. can anybody post a shot of carr on this site

we lost in part due to f%$#in pp among the other playsby bad defence but this is going to kills us in the playoffs we need to score on the pp.get rid of sully its not working. Two i know im going to ripped about this but im tired of boyle and dubi .were not paying dubi 4 mil to check and make bad passes enough with him already a boyle to much ice time for a guy who cant score either. i say put gabb steph aa back they were doing fine at the start let the work out there own kinks.put cally rich halligam back. and why not use rupp on the power play in front of the net big body though we have nobody that dose that . it cant any worst trying it . let me upsetpeople here and its time dubi goes 4th line or sits out . hes not producing or helping this club .i wouldent mind trading him at this point. and this is not a panic move cause we lost were not going to win every game.I love they way this is playing i just think these are just a few ajustment need to make to go deeep in the playoffs. think if sather cat dump woltrk dubi thats over 8 mill i belive we can use .who would you rather have evander kane or dubi
Anyone think Rangers #1 spot os masking the fact Sullivan is not good planning out the PP?
People are getting fired left and right. If they were lower in the standings maybe he would be fired.

I don’t think anyone overlooks how bad the PP is. It’s been a problem for years though. Last time the Rangers had a PP that clicked at 20% was when Gretzky was on the team.

Does Sully force Torts to let him run the PP at gun point
The offense has struggled the whole time Torts has been here. If Torts can’t do it, and Sully can’t do it then they need to find someone who can. Put another assistant on the bench
by BuckarooClub on Jan 20, 2012 12:44 PM EST up reply actions
Craig Ramsay is sitting on his couch right. He was Torts associate coach on the Cup team in Tampa and actually has had as much, if not more, success then Torts behind the bench since that Cup team. Could be the right fit, certainly can’t hurt.

LMFAO at calling Hagelin “halligam”…how do u even get that far off?
As for Rupp on the PP….. Been there, done that, still didn’t work.
by teknics on Jan 20, 2012 10:48 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Rupp is useless on the ‘Rangers’ PP because of 2 things. 1, he can’t transport the puck, which is a huge problem for this group, and 2. His usefulness as a big body screening the goalie is severely limited because we never just get pucks on net. It’s always 10-15 passes and scrambles along the boards before somebody on the ice thinks they need to fire a random shot at the net before Bettman institutes a power-play shot-clock.
anyone catch the NHL feed with Pitt announcers? are they the worst are just challenging for the worst.
Rangers are not playing well, so to lose to the B’s now doesn’t say much. This is the point of the year where the swoon is most likely. They look tired, slow and unenthusiastic. I’m hoping they’re not headed for a slump but they might be.
Shoot the puck Barry!!!
Last time I checked we are still in 1st.
