Rangers Vs. Flyers: Keys To The Winter Classic

It's almost time, folks! At 3:00 PM ET the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers will battle at Citizens Bank Ballpark. The Rangers and Flyers both won their last game.

The Rangers will be aiming for their 24th win of the season, and here's how they can get that win.

Enjoy the Experience, But Not Too Much- The Winter Classic is a once in a lifetime opportunity for some of the players. It's expected that both teams will try to soak in the atmosphere at the beginning of the game, but the coaches expect that won't affect the play. If anyone on the Rangers is skating around looking through the crowd, there is no doubt that they will be clocked. Henrik Lundqvist needs to focus completely on the play, and not the weather or fans himself.

Score First- The Flyers fans will be going absolutely bonkers at the Winter Classic, and they have every right to do so. The Rangers have every right to shut the Flyers fans up, however. Scoring early, and even more importantly scoring the first goal, can help the Rangers take away some of the Flyers momentum.

No Mismatch Fighting- Remember when Mike Rupp said to Jody Shelley that he's "irrelevant out there?" Well, he was right. Shelley will likely try to drop the gloves in the Classic, and players like Brandon Prust and even Brandon Dubinsky, who Shelley called a "weasel," should know better than to fight a player of lesser talent. The Rangers cannot afford to give the Flyers the upper hand.

Follow me after the jump for more.

Star-divide

Score On The Power Play- If the power play problem is ever going to be solved, today is the perfect day. The Rangers will need to jump on Sergei Bobrovsky, the starter over Ilya Bryzgalov. The Rangers have had Bryzgalov's number, but since it's Bobrovsky, the Rangers will have to adapt. One of the best ways to adapt is throw the puck on net, and that is something the power play team has not been doing. Fix that, and Bobrovsky will have to have the game of his life.

Avoid Any Huge Off Games- If Henrik Lundqvist has an off day, the chances of the Rangers winning this game dramatically drop. The Rangers need everyone to bring their A games, which means no rookie mistakes, and no reverting back to 2010 form, for some of the players.

I didn’t want to write it, considering it’s just rumors right now, but Rangers are holding a press conference in an hour and some are hearing Staal could play.

I hope not.

Barry Melrose just said live on ESPN that Stall is playing

If he is healthy, why would you hope not?

by BigB22 on Jan 2, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Because I don’t believe he is fully healthy, nor do I believe he is ready to play in NHL game, nor do I believe the Rangers are truly comfortable letting him do so, nor do I believe this is the time or place to do so.

Sorry but I disagree that anyone OTHER than Staal would allow him to rush back. Trainers and doctors are very careful these days since Crosby’s injury and with how long a 2nd concussion could sideline someone.

Keep in mind that for weeks he has been medically cleared and it has only been a matter of conditioning, ie his legs not his head. The media had been buzzing that he would be ready on Thursday or Saturday. So we are talking about a 3-4 day difference in conditioning. Perhaps he can only play 10-12 minutes tonight as a 3rd pair defenseman.

I feel fully confident that he is 100% healthy, 90% conditioned, and that if the Rangers are allowing him to play then they are truly comfortable with it.

I don’t agree still. Doctors and teams give players way too much freedom. He hasn’t played any rehab games (a fixture in the NHL that I HATE) and as of yesterday he wasn’t supposed to play. What gives, he magically got better? No, someone changed their mind, and that shows they don’t believe 100% in this.

This isn’t time to give someone a run at playing again. It’s Rangers vs. Flyers in the Winter Classic, not Rangers vs. Coyotes or something.

I don’t think it matters if it is Rangers vs Flyers or vs. Coyotes, either he is ready or he is not. As of yesterday he wasn’t supposed to play, only per Torts – who is notoriously tight lipped. I think if Staal 75-25 or even 90-10 to play, Torts wasn’t going to say anything for the small chance he’d be wrong. Also, there is the drama and build-up of a surprise return, perhaps Torts DID know yesterday… seem to remember another Staal doing the same thing in a Winter Classic a couple of years ago…

by BigB22 on Jan 2, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Staal should play unless he’s 90% or better. Anything less than that doesn’t cut it. I do think it matters the game, as Rangers-Flyers games are notoriously physical, and that’s not exactly the way I want his season to start. I much prefer he play rehab games, anyway.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m happy he’s back and I can’t wait to see him play (if he’s really playing) and I think he’ll be good enough, but I worry about the future for him if he’s not 100%

B.C. I totally agree with you on all points. Staal’s probably really pushing to play in this once in a lifetime game. Can’t blame him, but I’m nervous he’ll be targeted by the flyers.

Players don't practice hard...

unless they’re intent is to play hard. Concussed players are the hardest to work with, according to many doctors. So, if a player is moving in the direction of returning to his sport, doctors are not looking to upstage players. They are honestly concerned, but they are not looking to seeing their patients return.

So, I’m definitely continuing to pray for Staal’s health. Because this is definitely a rock ’em sock ’em game to come.
