Note: Hey guys, with the new SOPA bill we're cleaning things up a little bit inside the game threads. As you've surely noticed, we're cracking down on pictures and the like in game threads. Please understand that by cleaning up our act a little bit we're not only opening our arms to a younger audience but also making sure we don't have any pirated pictures posted. Thank you for your understanding. Any questions can always be directed to me at Joe@blueshirtbanter.com.

If you have a decent cellphone and data package

..try the Tune-In app. Its small and allows you to stream radio broadcasts through your phone. I typically use my Bluetooth connection to my car stereo to play the games on 1050 ESPN etc.

I’m stuck at work now so I’m using my desktop to broadcast and have the game DVRing on my TIVO back home waiting for me tonight.

Of all the brilliant things Tortorella does, he has an equal and opposite action. Like starting Richards with Fedotenko and Prust. For a team that lacks scoring, it makes perfect sense to put Richards on a line without a puck-possession guy or scorer. Especially against a team that defends and goaltends just as well as the Rangers.

by dar9898 on Jan 21, 2012 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

Alright.

I’m just confused on what’s being called or now. I mean AA was hit in the face in front of the official. Cally was crosschecked from behind in front of the official, yet Gabby’s stick tipped the end of Chara’s skate and it was a penalty.

I’m just confused as to what constitutes a penalty anymore. It’s too inconsistent for me.

MSG sent a bunch of spin people to the farmers market near me to fill petitions

I had to explain to them that Time Warner Cable isn’t necessarily wrong to resist 53% rate increased from MSG. They hadn’t even been told that MSG was trying to jack up the rates cable subscribers pay

Yup.

The rates are ridiculous.

3 penalties in one period is a lot. That means the refs are looking for calls, which is fine.

But if that’s the case, than call the hit from behind or the stick to the face.

There is still 20 minutes left, you don’t win a hockey game in the second period. The Bruins are still a good team, but the Rangers are matching them very well.

Well, the Rangers are like 20-1 when going into the third with the lead, or something like that..

So the odds would be in our favor. Now it’s even.

no you don't win games in the 2nd

it just means that you win games by scoring more goals than your opponent. and if you happen to have scored more goals than your opponent when the third period begins, then you are more likely to finish that period having scored more goals and thus win esp since goals are so rare in the nhl.

for another example, see commentators who announce that the team that wins the first two games of a five game playoff series wins the series 83% of the time… aka exactly what you’d expect guessing randomly

PPs aren’t about coaching. It’s about player instinct and adaption. The Rangers didn’t even practice the PP in 1994. You serious overvalue the coach. He doesn’t matter that much. The Ranger PP has sucked since Jagr left

by NTB on Jan 21, 2012 3:28 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

We’ll just disagree about that.

There are plenty of teams with less skill that have better powerplays.

For me, it’s completely about movement and coaching.

And if the players we have are that bad at it, even though they have an abundance of skill, than maybe other players should get a shot.

BR had no problem running a great PP in Dallas. Here, he can’t do anything on it.

Disagree. A lot of powerplays are movement, passing and rebounds- getting a man in front. That is why the Rangers pp sucks. They dont move; they dont get in front and they dey dont get the rebounds

totally disagree. I ran the #s for the 2013/14 season and I can make it work

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

For 2013/2014? How?

If you add Nash in 2013-2014, its rougly 47.5 mill committed to Nash, Boyle, Rupp, Cally, Dubinsky, Gabby, Richards, Staal, Girardi, and Hank. Thats probably about 3/4 of your cap space tied up into 10 players, and only 2 of those are defensemen.

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

2013/14: Nash-$7.8M, BR-$6.667M, Cally-$4.275M, Kreider-$2M (assumed), Stepan-$962,500 (qualified), Gaby-$7.5M, Hags-$962,500 (qualified), Boyle-$1.7M, Prust-$1M (assumed), C. Thomas-$1M, Miller-$1.275M, Rupp-$1.5M, Staal-$3.975M, Girardi-$3.325M, McD-$2M (currently RFA for 2013/14 so I gave more than qualifier), Sauer-$1.75M (currently RFA for 2013/14 so I gave more than qualifier), Erixon-$1.75M, McIlrath-$1.325M, King-$6.875M (final year), back-up-$1M. That totals $58,641,667. Anyone that doesn’t have a comment after them has a contract for 2013/14 which is a good portion of this roster except for Kreider, Stepan, Hags, Prust, McD, Sauer, and the goalie back up.

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

That might work

But I kind of wonder if one of the young d-men (Sauer or McD) might get squeezed out in that situation.

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

new CBA coming and I guarantee that younger players will get less not the vets. with all the concussions the vet players will argue that they are like football players with a short career life.

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

see the key is all are signed through 2013/14 except for the RFAs and Prust and a back up goalie. this is by design by Rangers’ management to make a run for the cup by 2013/14. it is also Gaby’s and King’s final season at their current contracts.

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

McD is never going anywhere. neither is Sauer. erixon at $1.75M might be at risk.

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

Haha

What I meant was, they’d play WELL and price themselves out of the Rangers if they acquired Nash.

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

they’re RFAs for 2013/14. besides the cap issues are a year by tear thing. if the cap is at $65M by 2013/14 then we even have space.

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

You think it will be that high?

I’m optimistic it will. If you’re planning it that way though (as in targeting 2013-2014)…would it be better to wait and just try to sign Parise?

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

the new CBA will be the same basic system it will be a fight for revenue % just like the NBA. with inflation coming and the current contracts grandfathered in how much less could it be?

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

My fault on those 2

I don’t know what I was looking at where I didn’t see that they weren’t RFA’s.

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

I guess what I mean is

I’ll take a winger who is just as talented and almost $3 mill cheaper if they want to make a splash…like Ryan.

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Ryan won’t be available. if Murray trades him he should be fired ASAP. The guys who will be available are Nash, Parise, maybe Doan though I don’t he waives his NTC, anyone who is high-priced. Ryan Smyth as a rental is interesting since he will re-sign with the Oilers after this season.

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Ryan SHOULD be available

but the fact that it was bandied about heavily earlier this year makes me think he probably is available. I think that’d be a huge overreaction for the Ducks in a year where it just seems like everything went wrong for them. But GM’s don’t always think that way.
Like where your head is at on Smyth. I don’t want them to make a move for any D-man because if they get Sauer back soon, thats almost like a deadline deal. Like their D-men a lot.

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

And Available

has many different meanings…there’s a big gap between “actively shopping a player” and “we’ll entertain offers.”

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

Murray was trying to shake up his team. trading Ryan and Getzlaf who are in their lower 20s would be insane.

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Phaneuf got traded when he was 24

GM’s overreact to dry spells by young players all the time.

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

true young, good players get traded but 30 goal scorers at 24?

by Richter1994 on Jan 21, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Well

if a franchise defenseman can get traded, a 30 goal scoring winger would too. Since I think D-men are valued higher.

by NastyNate82 on Jan 21, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

is Pfaneuf really a franchise D? seems like Calgary knew what they were doing, no?
