NHL Update: Andrew Ference Given Three Game Suspension For Hit On Ryan McDonagh

Brendan Shanahan and the Department of Player Safety announced that defenseman, Andrew Ferenence has been suspended for his on on Ryan McDonagh. In overtime, Andrew Ference laid a vicious hit on Ryan McDonagh that propelled him into the boards in an awkward position.

On the play, Ference received a five-minute major for charging accompanied by a game misconduct. McDonagh remained on the ice for several minutes before being escorted off by medical trainer Jim Ramsey. Shanahan states that McDonagh was in a defenseless position, and the onus was on Ference to let up.

As Shanahan stated, this was a "textbook example" of the re-written boarding rule that was put in place prior to this season. However, there was some good news coming out of all this as Shanahan states that they have heard there was no apparent injury to Ryan McDonagh as a result. Definitely comforting to hear that.

If you wish to view the suspension video from Shanahan, it will available for your viewing after the jump.

Fair.

I agree with Shanny’s intrepretation—no malicious intent, but reckless—and am content with three games.

Another thing to note was that in this video, Shanny states that after contact with the NYR, McDonagh does not have an “apparent injury”… maybe he did just get the wind knocked out of him… one can only hope.

Agreed Very Fair

I have to admit when watching the play and the replays from yesterday I thought it was a shove and that’s it. Never saw the skate of Ference bumping McDonagh’s skate that started the chain reaction.

Great job by Shanahan and the right amount of games.

I think the hospital thing was a precaution, if anything he may have pop his shoulder out. His head never seemed to contact the boards. I do know you can get a concussion just from head getting rattled like that but it seemed like he took most of the impact on his shoulder pushing it awkwardly “rearward over his back” if that makes sense.

He did seem woozy getting up but hopefully it was just because he was in a bit of shock from the unexpected-ness of that strong of a hit from behind.

Looked to Me . . .

. . . that the side of Ryan’s head hit the dasher. Mostly because Ference’s skate clipped his at the beginning of contact and that made McD unbalanced for the shove.

I hope you’re right, though, Tek. I hope there’s no head injury.

by cmont on Jan 22, 2012 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

still think it could have gone either way

Mcdonagh knew Ference was bearing down on him. He stopped a few feet from the boards so he could play the puck up the far boards to dubi. It was def his feet and the fact that ference came in with so much speed that he deserved the suspension, plus the amount of time he had to make a decision on the hit. I honestly thought, if anything, it would be a small suspension, 3 is small enough. Glad Mcdonagh is ok, he just seemed shookup a bit.

by nhl_legendz on Jan 22, 2012 4:44 PM EST via mobile reply actions

If you watch the play, you see Ference start turning towards McD as he puts his elbow out. Now, he didn’t launch himself into him, and instead pushed him in the back, so the suspension is only 3 games instead of 5-10.

Fair call IMO.

Fair ruling IMO.

Maybe not intent to injure, but he still should have held up.

The NHL is trying to send a message, so these players have a first reaction of holding up. Maybe it’ll start working soon.

not sure about intent. nobody talks about Ference bringing his stick down after the hit just missing McD’s head. he was out of control IMO.

According to Shanny, there was no apparent injury to McDonagh, or so they have heard.

by Bryan Winters on Jan 22, 2012 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

No argument here...

I think Shanny took the Marchand hit into account, and the comments of Claude Julien in both situations.
I have a feeling the Bruins brass may have pissed off Shanny the last go-round. Maybe this will curtail some of the unnecessary rough stuff the Bruins have been guilty of lately.

I disagree. I defer to an expert in Torts when he says that hit was one of the most dangerous he has seen in a long time. In response, Shanny places a phone call knowing full well that he cannot hand out more than 5 games as per the CBA. It took Shanny less than 12 months to be a Bettman shill. If they keep this up all the stars of the game will be knocked out by the time they’re 28 years of age. That’s really great for the game. The league is successful because hockey is the greatest sport in the world not because of the knuckleheads that run it led by head troll Bettman.

Larry Brooks tweet: “Three games for Ference fits into scale of sentences previously established by league/Shanahan but does nothing to act as deterrent.” says it all. just disgraceful.

by Richter1994 on Jan 23, 2012 6:10 AM EST reply actions

This from Pat Leonard’s article:

“The defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins have cluttered the video vault of NHL senior VP of player safety Brendan Shanahan.
Sunday afternoon, Shanahan went on camera to dole out a three-game suspension to Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference for his dangerous boarding of Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh in New York’s 3-2 overtime win Saturday at TD Garden.
Ference’s suspension without pay follows Brad Marchand’s five-gamer for clipping the Canucks’ Sami Salo (concussion) on Jan. 7; Milan Lucic’s one-gamer for his illegal check from behind of the Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo on Dec. 17; and Lucic’s escape of suspension despite running Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller (concussion) on Nov. 12.
The good news from Shanahan’s announcement is that it appears McDonagh – not available to the media after the game or on the Rangers’ off-day Sunday – was not injured on the play.
“It is important to note that although McDonagh left the game, the reports we have received at this time are that there are no apparent injuries,” Shanahan said.
Unfortunately, while Shanahan’s suspension was consistent with his enforcement of the league’s new safety measures, his consideration of McDonagh’s lack of injury and Ference’s lack of intent on the play resulted in a suspension that likely won’t act as a deterrent of such dangerous plays in the future."

So the Bees have a parade of players that go through the suspension process but it doesn’t matter because they know that the punishment doesn’t fit the crime and they will continue to hurt opposing players. Jon Stewart’s video clip on the dirty Bees is funny but true. The non-calls on Cooke’s slewfoot and Malkin’s low bridge should have been game misconducts by themselves but weren’t even called as 2 minute penalties even with the refs right there looking at the plays. It’s all just bullshit.

I understand that the “punishment” is consistent with previous incidents. However I find it appalling that punishment is predicated on whether or not the victim is injured.
So if a player broke his arm because of a hit like this the offender would be suspended for more games. What would happen, God forbid, if a player was paralyzed? Would the offending player then get 10 games? WTF?
I dont believe that 3 games is a strong enough detrrent. If you want to get it out of the game a penalty needs to be much more severe. Because the resulting injury could have been so much worse. McD just got lucky.

If they really want to tie suspension to injury then the offending player should sit out until the injured player returns.

Right now in most cases suspension does not hurt the offending team just the offending player’s checkbook (a little). If a team loses a 3rd/4th line player for a few games, most have depth enough to mitigate their absence. How does that deter teams?

or the player must sit out the games against the "injured" team

In this case, Ferance wouldn’t play the next 3 games against the Rangers. Only if there weren’t games remaining would he sit out against the rest of the league. In addition to be being fairer, it would also be more disruptive for the offending team.

I would prefer that they DONT tie the punishment to the severity of injury. If it’s a dangerous, illegal hit then they should suspend the offending player for 10, 15 or 20 games. That may seem extreme but it will make even the worst goon think twice. No one wants to lose that much money.
I dont see how three games for Ferrence is much of a deterrent.

Agree wholeheartedly with your 1st sentence. Any time somebody mentions relating the length of suspension to the injury I just cringe.

You punish the act, not the result. There are a million things that go into a play like the hit on McDonagh. While banged up, thank the FSM that he wasn’t seriously injured. There’s a real chance he could have broke his neck, blew out his shoulder, gotten a bad concussion…you just don’t know.

Everybody knows if McDonagh was severely injured, Ference gets at least double the games, and that’s wrong.

by Caerid11 on Jan 23, 2012 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

but the funny thing is the “injury barometer” has been ignored in the cases of Marc Savard, Cindy, etc. so Shanny’s explanation for Ferrence’s suspension is bullshit again. it was just convenient to justify the 3 games that way. Shanny has become a shill.

by Richter1994 on Jan 23, 2012 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

I guess I made you cringe.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you. They should not be linked. But the NHL does when they make statements like they do. My point is if you are going to relate length of suspension to the resulting injury then link the length of the injury as well. They wont do that so then stop making the relation.

Yup, I hate it when they mention the severity of the injury or the lack thereof. It pretty much signals that it’s ok to do these things as long as you don’t maim or paralyze somebody.

by Caerid11 on Jan 24, 2012 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

Another boarding?

I was unable to watch the game so I only saw replays of the hit but I’ve seen many comments about Prust boarding Chara? I know he received a penalty for it but how bad was it (in your honest opinion)? More or less dangerous or possibly deserving of supplementary discipline?

Greatly embellished

Chara is what, 12 feet tall and 600 pounds? He sure went down easily on a weak hit from little Prusty. I thought it was even a borderline penalty call. Highly doubt he’ll be hearing from the league on that one.

by Steeeve on Jan 23, 2012 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

It was a bump along the boards that Chara turned in to. Comparing it to the Ference hit is like comparing getting slapped in the face to taking a bat to the temple.

Actually, on the TSN boards, the ridiculous Boston fans were more upset with Stepan’s “similar” hit on Campbell which they said was more dangerous and deliberate than Ference’s. Absolute bullshit…
