Selanne to NYR?

I'm sure this will get some blood pumping this morning but my intention is not to stoke the trade fires, just to open it up for discussion.

It was reported in the Ottawa Sun on Sat that the NYR, along with Detroit, Boston and Sharks, have all inquired about Selanne's status with the Ducks. He has a NTC clause so it will be ultimately up to him if he wants to move to a playoff team. That being said, you could assume that if that was to happen the Ducks would look to accommodate him and thus the return for his services would not be astronomical. Combined with that and his pending UFA and possible retirement the cost should be reasonable.

Assuming the cost is pick(s) and/or mid-low end prospects, is he someone you would want on the team for the playoff push? Obviously he brings experience and professionalism along with dynamic play. If so, where would hit fit?

I know he is a RW but unsure if he can play off wing. If not, would Cally move over or would you keep him on the so called 3rd line? Could you make the comparison between Selanne and Loui Eriksonn and think that he would be a good fit next to Brad Richards?

Comments, criticisms, complaints?

Seriously doubt you get selanne for a draft pick. My guess is they would want Anisimov or Dubi. He is a first ballot hall of famer, regardless of his status after the season he could seriously bolster a cup run.

Want and get are two different teams. Can’t see any team giving up young, core players for an uber-rental. Even if he doesnt retire next season, he most likley will return to the Ducks as a UFA. Kovy went for less and no disrespect to Selanne, Kovy is definitely a better player now with a future. UFA, possibly retirement, and a limited number of teams he could go to would all effect the price.

ANA wants/needs defense so something like a 2nd and Valatenko could do it.

I’m not so sure Kovy has a better trade value. If Kovy was as consistent as Selanne then maybe, but Kovy’s laissez faire style of play doesn’t exactly make him a commodity.

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Jan 23, 2012 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Kovy had a much higher value because of the team being able to re-sign him.

No one is re-signing Teemu, except the Ducks.

The guys dynamite but I can’t see him playing tortorella hockey. That’s why Shane doan and Ryan smyth are better options.

I think the team

Has an abundance of guys that can play grind it out hockey. They’re still a bit lacking in top end skill. Assuming the cost was equal, I think Selanne fills a bigger need.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jan 23, 2012 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed, we need a pure scorer who will net us 10 goals in the final 20 games and has a serious post season resume.

by BigB22 on Jan 23, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Oh, and we need it on Richards line. We have our “best” playmaker on a line with 2 grinders, thats why his assists are so low.

we dont need everyone to be a grinder. trtorellas system s great for getting the best out of those guys, but if you put richards and selanne together with a tough guy on the left, maybe dubi, i think he would do awesome

by nhl21 on Jan 23, 2012 1:32 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

exactly, like bigb said

we need somebody to put the puck in the net when we need it. We have enough grind it out cycle and forecheck type players, we need the scoring of a TS or somebody similar. Besides, it isn’t like Selanne is some lazy piece of shit that will be a huge liability for us defensively.

79 points in 111 playoff games. Do we even have half that many playoff games played in our roster, combined?

by BigB22 on Jan 23, 2012 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

You and everyone saw the game against boston

if thats the conference finals I might not want selanne in a tough series like that. It’s going to already be a tough series physically and having a guy that doesn’t get physical in all 3 zones can be problematic.

If he does come cheaply enough I’d consider it. I definitely do not advise going after him with everything we got in the farm.

Power Play

Selanne is exactly the type of rental to go out and get. He immediately helps the power play, he plays in both ends of the ice, he won’t cost a fortune, he adds scoring finesse which we could use…he’s a perfect fit and a great chracter guy that Torts would likely find minimal fault with in any situation. Problem is, will he choose NY over Detroit. I serioulsy doubt hed approve a trade to the Sharks, nor would the Ducks likely consider that.

by BeukeBOOM! on Jan 25, 2012 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

I think somebody like Selanne should slot in well with Richards.

Even if he does have to play RW, you still have AA and Cally on the 3rd line, Hags/Step/Gabs on the 1st, and Dubi slots in well on that Richards line I think (provides some size/grind/defense). Mitchell would fit fairly well next to AA (though I could see them making another trade to upgrade there), and leaves us with the Prust/Boyle/Feds or Rupp 4th line.

I doubt we give up much for an UFA rental. 2nd rounder and a lower-tier forward prospect IMO get it done unless somebody else is selling the farm for him. All depends on Selanne, but you’d have to think 1. The Ducks aren’t going to contend this year, so get some picks/prospects for Selanne and 2. I think he’d waive his NTC for a chance to contend and help the Ducks get a return for him because 3. he can just re-sign there in the off-season.

Not my 1st choice, not my last choice, and if we don’t have to give up much, it’d be well worth it IMO.

by Caerid11 on Jan 23, 2012 10:39 AM EST reply actions

Or think why would he wave his no trade clause to come to some cold ass place to play hockey when he can just soak up that California sun. He is gonna move from that little heaven to some cold ass place to chase a cup he already held? He has made his millions and has won his awards I’m sure sitting on a golf coarse in calli in April while his paycheck gets cashed is very appealing to him.

Players like that I don’t think will fair well with torts. Id be afriad that he doesn’t have that drive to give everything for the cup. I’m afraid most of Anaheim lacks that drive similar to Washington. Id prefer a vet that is still looking for his cup at the end of his career instead of one who has his hardware already

Doubt Anaheim gives him to the sharks or kings.

by Pballer505 on Jan 23, 2012 11:10 AM EST via mobile reply actions

How can you presume he doesn’t want to win another one? He’s 40+ years old and still putting in the work to play in a league that’s now built for players half his age. I’d be willing to bet that he’s got just as much competitive fire as anyone in the league.

I believe he said everyone on the team is available except for Selanne and Koivu…who happen to have NMC. So yeah; in that sense they are not available and he said he wont approach a player to ask them to waive their NMC.

But there is nothing to stop Selanne from approaching management and asking for a trade if he wanted to compete in the playoffs. As I alluded to above, you would have to imagine if a player like that makes such a request and the organization can get back assets it would be shocking if they did not accommodate it.

Also, really dont see Dubi being used for a rental. This team will not trade a core player for such.

Aucune clause de Mouvement

by Blueshirt in Paris on Jan 23, 2012 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Dubi isn’t going for a rental. Stupid discussion, even dumber idea, won’t happen.

I’d actually be surprised if it wasn’t the other way around: the Ducks ask Selanne to waive his NMC/NTC. Ducks aren’t doing anything this year, so they move him for picks/prospects. Selanne gets to go to a contender for a few months, Ducks get pieces for the future, Selanne can re-sign in the off-season. Don’t see how it’s not a win-win for everybody (unless Selanne really would rather just sit tight.)

Maybe not an Eastern team, but if the Sharks came calling? He’d still be in Cali.

by Caerid11 on Jan 23, 2012 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

I doubt he’s trade.

He means so much to the organization/fans, and while they wouldn’t trade him unless they got a very nice return, most teams wouldn’t give up much for a definite rental.

That’s why guys like Smyth, Boyes, Prospal, or maybe even Doan make more sense.

What does Prospal bring to this team that it really needs? I think Vinny was a good Ranger but I think e have too many players in the line up that are better than him. Your not bringing him in to play on the 3rd line and I don’t see a spot for him on the first or second. Bobby Ryan might cost us Dubinsky and a pick. He is sgined for a few years and Is Dubinsky with more of a scoring touch. I don’t want to lose Dubi, but if it meant Ryan…..I’d go for it.

Essentially on a fully healthy team he would take Rupp or Mitchell’s spot, assuming Torts wont play Wolski or we trade him.

It gives us a gritty enough two-way guy who can score. Also, it gives us another guy with cup experience.

I kinda think Rupp has solidified his position on this team with a few timely goals and he seems to be a great team guy. You can’t replace that and toughness with Vinny especially in the playoffs. I loved Vin when he was here, I think we have too many younger players that make him obsolete. He is not the guy we should add.

Sure he’s scored some clutch goals, but thats about it. He isn’t an offensive or defensive presence.

We need more scoring, the team is tough enough.

Prospal

Please Glen, make it happen!
Honestly, who could be a better fit? Prospal has shown he can play with Gaborik, he has that savvy veteran personality about him, best celebrations ever, he’s been on a team coached by Torts 2 different times, I think he would seriously be a big help. Just imagine, we would also have a bit more versatility with our lines, we’d have options to put the Pack line together if we need, we have a guy who can score to play with Richards and also Gaborik, a boost to the PP, also Prospal means Dubi and Hagelin getting lesser competition to play against, so he could possibly make them more effective by that. You could do a lot of things.

I would tend to agree that Prospal might be our best bang for the buck trade. Should not cost all that much and he comes right in with very little adjusting needed as he is very familiar with our system and players. His versatility can have him play on any line and even center in the event of an injury.

My only concern is how much he has left in the tank. If I remember back to last year it seemed he ran out of gas but that could be due to his injury. Admittingly I have not seen much of him this year but his numbers dont show that he is having an issue.
