New York Rangers Can't Overlook Winnipeg Jets Tonight
The New York Rangers got good news on Monday when the team learned that Ryan McDonagh will probably play in tonight's matchup with the Winnipeg Jets.
The Rangers have had their fair share of injuries this season, especially to their defensive corps, and having McDonagh back will be a big boost for the team.
New York does, however, have bigger things to worry about. After a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday, the Rangers now have some much needed confidence and momentum. They also have a big break in the schedule, having an entire week off before taking on the New Jersey Devils January 31st.
Join me after the jump for more.
The Rangers have watched their power play falter, and their offense run dry at time, but the team has still managed to win some huge games this season. None of those games was bigger than the victory over Boston, something that proved the Rangers belong in the NHL's "elite team" conversation.
Marian Gaborik scored two goals, Brad Richards picked up a key assist on Gaborik's overtime winner and the Rangers found themselves atop the East once again. The Bruins have since tied the Rangers' record, but the point remains the same: the Rangers can hang with anyone in the NHL.
In other Rangers news, Steve Eminger has been cleared for contact. This is good news, especially with news breaking that Michael Sauer has suffered a setback. John Tortorella needs all the help he can get on the back end, and Eminger might be just what the doctor ordered to give McDonagh or Girardi a break when they need it.
Regardless, the Rangers have to focus on tonight. You don't want to have an entire week to sit on a loss, that doesn't help anyone.
Thoughts on this guys?

its funny one day your first in the league and the next day
Your in 2nd place sharing it with 3 other teams with a few teams only a win away from catching up. Assuming that’s why grabbing as many points in the beginning of the season is the right thing to do. Gabby and Del zotto are not even league leaders anymore in goals and plus minus. Funny how quick things can turn around

We have been pretty average the past 6 games and Gabby was cold for 11 games. We are still first in the East, today, with 2 games in hand on Detroit in the West.
From the Post this morning, B Rich said:
(Regarding Torts comments about being first in January not meaning anything) "It’s like how you can’t start clock-watching when you take a one-goal lead into the third period; you have to take care of each shift.
"It’s way too early to be thinking about holding on to first place. It’s January. If we have a bad 10-day stretch, four teams can catch us

Marty in net tonight
Personally, I would have waited until the next back to back after the ASG, meh.
He needs some work
Plus, he’s no Hank, but it’s not like he’s a C+ goaltender
"Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!"
This is smart move by Torts… going to the back-up keeps the teams head on straight knowing they have to work a little bit harder without Lundqvist back there… He did it in florida with Biron and it work and it has worked numerous times… This isn’t a slight on Biron at all… it’s the whole mindset of the backup and the team doesn’t take this game lightly with the backup in because they have to work … It’s a good move by torts

He’s 2-0 with a 0.50 GAA and a .980 Save% against the Jets…no need to have a bad feeling about him in goal

I don’t mind Marty tonight. not sure if the stats back it up but the team seems to play better defensively when he’s in net. After some of those long stretches of Bruins dominance in our own end last game we need to tighten it up a little make better outlet passes and stay in better position, imo.
a lot of that has to do with marty’s ability to play the puck…

Holy Crap that’s the most far out rumor I heard yet.
I think the parise Ryan salanne rumors are more believable.
I heard Valequette to islanders for real BTW

Bring in Parise, Ryan, Teemu, and St. Louis for Redden.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Redden AND Christensen

Wow, tip your hat to Ovie
Passing on ASG…
‘’He really doesn’t feel like he deserves to be there and doesn’t want to be a distraction,‘’ McPhee told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre Lebrun. ’’When he came in this morning, he said, ’I’m a suspended player and I don’t deserve to be there.‘’’

I think you guys are thinking too hard about it. He is upset the league didn’t give that other guy a suspension. He is also upset that he gets penalized this time, he should know better than to leave his feet he is constantly doing it.
Honestly, if this was another season he wouldn’t do this but he is probably depressed about how bad he is playing, in addition to the league not exempting him like they normally do, so like a child he subconsciously lashes out for attention by saying he doesn’t deserve to be in the ASG.
Hmmmm
John Tortorella needs all the help he can get on the back end
Unsure what this means, exactly, but I am not about to probe.
