Laughing stock?

Has Alex Ovechkin become the laughing stock of the NHL. He recently withdrew his spot in the NHL ASG because his "heart is in that game". Last year everyone said that Ovechkin had an off year which could be said about a few players. This yeah he isn't doing much better. Alex withdrew his spot just after being handed a 3 game suspension Mr.Shanny. Personally this seems to be his way of pouting and trying to get back at the NHL. This move also makes me wonder how the Capitols fan base feels about him as of late. They have a very streaky type of team with few consistent players.

I know this is a Rangers blog site but its just makes me laugh in disgust that a player chooses to opt out of a game cause his heart isn't in it. Kind of makes me think about a book I read about Crosby and Ovechkin. I can't remember the gentlemen's name or the book. But in the book he stated that Ovechkin does not play to his best when playing for the NHL. He plays at his best for his country and that's it. Now i understand wanting to be your all for your country but I Think players play Ovechkin just see the NHL as a pay day. That is not entirely their fault either, NHL has kind of done that to them self. Either way i see Ovechkin as a good laugh and a disgust to the NHL. I used respect him as a player and enjoy watching him when he didn't play the Rangers. Now there is no longer and fun in it.

Never liked Ovechkin. He is actually ahead of, do I say, Crosby in my hatred department.
Wouldnd ever want him on my team, total headcase.

his pride was just hurt. he is obviously doing this in protest hah, although i love watching ovie play it is a little bit sad he hasn’t matured past these kinds of actions.

Total dick move. Should get suspended for a few more games for it.

He would never fit on a real winning team

It takes a team mentality to go far in the NHL, something he has not developed yet. Does he have the chance? probably. But it doesn’t help that the Caps organization give him cart blanche and fire coaches before they discipline their players. The NHL is half to blame here as well, vaulting that kid into fame weather he could handle it or not.

The Ovechkin Project by Damien Cox and Gare Joyce. FYI, there’s a ton of evidence to the contrary—his international numbers aren’t very good.

Damien Cox. Alrighty then….moving on.

I think the biggest issue here is that the NHL metaphorically shit-the-bed when it hitched its wagon to Crosby, Ovechkin, and their ‘rivalry’ as the focal point of the ‘new NHL.’ If Ovie wasn’t the current poster-boy, this wouldn’t have legs.

Frankly this made me like him more (or maybe more accurately hate him less). The dude is taking accountability. He’s not playing because he hasn’t played like an all-star this year, and frankly I think its great that he owned up to it. I wish Dwight Freeney did the same thing this year for the Pro Bowl. Its a refreshing sight to see some humility.

Yeah, this is how I was taking his actions. Who knows, I gues you could read it either way.

It's how he said it

We’re all speculating based on his statement, which I’ve only read, but he doesn’t say he shouldn’t be there because of his sub-par season so far. He chose to focus on the fact he is suspended.

I like the way he plays (for the most part) and he’s fun to watch. I don’t know if I agree that it’s humility although it could definitely be a factor in his decision. He should have touched on it, though, if that is the case.

I’m basing it mostly on the comment where he says something like “I don’t deserve to play”. I consider that humility :)

Well, if the all-star game wasn’t such a joke, maybe he’d play in it.

Fans didn’t seem to get this pissed when Datsyuk and Lidstrom skipped it.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

I’m saying that if you are going to hate on Ovechkin, then fine, but not for something like this. The game is a joke, and with no meaning to it that isn’t going to change.

The skills competition is fun though.

Totally agree, I’m just kind of pointing out, albeit poorly, Ovi had some haters before this and LIdstrom in all likelihood had none so people were already predisposed to criticize on Ovi

Well, most people were saying he shouldn’t be allowed to play in the game since he was suspended. A lot of people were ripping the NHL for “letting” him play in the ASG. Then he decides not to play and everyone is ripping him for that.

Honestly, it’s the ASG, who gives a shit if he plays. It’s not like the game is in Washington, and he doesn’t deserve to play in it anyway.

I agree that he doesn’t deserve and it would have been different if the NHL said “No you can’t play cause your suspended” but he seems like he just doing this to “spit” in the NHL’s face. And you know a ton of Washington fans were going to be all hyped up cause their big boy was playing in it.

I could get more love from a Cactus then you..........

He made the right decision for the wrong reasons. Enough said who care about Ovetchkin people talk about him enough in this league.

Ovechkin reminds me of LeBron James, two super star great player who always choke during the big moments. And if Ovechkin ever leaves the Caps, their going to be completely irrelevant just like the Cavs are now.

by Nedved11 on Jan 28, 2012 3:35 AM EST reply actions

I disagree.

Obviously they wouldn’t be as good, but without Lebron the Cavs were atrocious.

The Caps would still be okay.

Basketball is purely a star-driven sport where 1 guy can make an enormous difference. Hockey is completely different.

by Caerid11 on Jan 28, 2012 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

The Capitals have essentially been playing without Ovechkin this entire season. His 5v5 scoring rate is terrible and I think guys like Perreault and Semin could replace a good deal of what Ovechkin does on the PP on the half wall or near the front of the net, to say nothing of guys like Carlson who on other teams would be logging four PP minutes a game but don’t even get half that on the Caps right now.

Ovechkin is a laughing stock because

he opted out of a meaningless game that nobody really wants to be at, and because “some gentleman” wrote that Crosby likes the NHL more then Ovechkin. Whatever.

by nrmax88 on Jan 30, 2012 1:39 AM EST reply actions

He just worded it in the worst way ever

"You play to win the game!"
"There are two ways to deal with pressure. You feel it or you apply it."
"I'm not a loser"
"When you win, nothing hurts."
"I'm the one who's supposed to throw like Vince."
