Blueshirt Banter Discussion: Who Is Your 2012 NHL Winter Classic MVP?

PHILADELPHIA, PA - JANUARY 02: The New York Rangers celebrate after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers by a score of 3-2 during the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park on January 2, 2012 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images)

The New York Rangers won the 2012 NHL Winter Classic in dramatic fashion, using three unanswered goals to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 Monday afternoon.

So let me ask all of you: If you had the final vote on an MVP from the Winter Classic, who would you choose?

Maybe you would select Mike Rupp, who scored two of the Rangers' three goals, including on late in the second period to halt the Flyers' momentum and keep the Rangers in the game. Rupp would strike again in the third period from a bad angle to tie the game. He also did a Jaromir Jagr salute after the first goal.

You could also select Henrik Lundqvist. Not only did Lundqvist shine the entire game, he also stopped a Danny Briere penalty shot with 19.6 seconds left to preserve the win.

What about Brad Richards? The Rangers' premiere free agent acquisition scored the game-winning goal (his sixth game-winner this season) and made a few spectacular passes throughout the game.

Or maybe you could chose someone else? So go ahead guys, who is your 2012 NHL Winter Classic MVP?

Henrik! Henrik! Henrik!

Tough call between the Rupper and Henrik. Have to go with Henrik though. The Flyers were pretty dominant for a good deal of the 1st 2 periods. 34 saves. Penalty shot. 2 breakaways.

Have to give Rupp the good old 1A though. Most of the forwards were generating very little until his first goal (wicked shot btw, thankfully Meszaros backed off like he had Ovechkin coming at him). After that our forwards found life and dominated most of the 3rd.

Have to pick Henrik though. Anybody could have scored those goals. I doubt anybody else holds the fort, stopping a PS, 2 breakaways, and an onslaught in the first half of the game and the last 5 minutes.

Torts

If it wasn’t for Rupp we would of lost. At that time no other forwards were doing that much.

If Richards didn’t get that game winner we would of tied and maybe lost in overtime or shootout.

If henrik didn’t fight till the end when phili said hey wah wah this is unfair and we want overtime because we don’t want to be embarassed in our city in our stadium . If henrik wasn’t henrik we would of went into overtime or shootout n maybe lost.

So I’m going to go with JOHN TORTS
he single handedly made the right lines and set up the right changes to fight off that idiot lav. Team and gave us the win :)

Rupper

He basically gave the Rangers hope when there was none. Getting 2 goals from a role player like Rupp really got them going.

Sadly, I am way to accustomed to Henrik always being spectacular. Its gotten to the point where he may need to play without pads for me to be more impressed. Best goalie since the lockout. Period.

oddly enough im pretty sure briere and giroux scored on hank 5hole in that shootout to go to the playoffs 2 years ago. Maybe they see that as his weakness. Regardless hes a beast and, in my opinion, has been the best goalie in the league for a few years.

Not trying to play devil’s advocate but I think we are getting a bit over sensitive. Seen people called out on this several times. It is not offensive on the same level as the profanity used daily like F bombs and the like. It is a tier down and has some real life implications making it similar to homophobic remarks we all use like saying that bad call was gay or Carcillo is a faggot… And nobody is called out on that , even though there are surely more homosexual relatives and friends of posters than those with Downs Syndrome. Again, I am not trying to argue for the sake of it especially given that info not say “retard” like that, I just do not think any of it should be censored here. We are all thick skinned adults here, I am sure those affected by any type of comment are used to ignoring it.

by BigB22 on Jan 4, 2012 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

“info” should read "I don’t "

by BigB22 on Jan 4, 2012 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

SBNation and blog editors have every right to censor anything they see fit. For what it’s worth, I’ve commented on other blogs under different names and the guys here are by far the most lenient moderators I have come across. I’ve given them due amounts of shit, and seen them put up with things even I wouldn’t, so when they ask for a little refrain, I think it right to honor their request.

For me, the word ret**d has lost a lot of its meaning over the years, just like many other ‘phrases’ that have become so overused that you’re better off getting their meaning from Urban Dictionary than Webster’s. When I hear somebody called a ret**d, I just think of that person doing something purposefully stupid (cast of Jackass as an example) and not somebody with a disability.

However, there are many out there who have a child, a friend, or other family member with a disability and they do take it seriously because I’m sure they’ve heard the term used derogatorily, so, for the greater good, there’s a multitude of other fitting phrases that can be used to describe Danny Briere, such as smarmy douchebucket.

by Caerid11 on Jan 4, 2012 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

Yes they are very lenient and yes the term has lost a lot of meaning which is why I find it somewhat hypocritical, while we are totally allowed to talk about fucking Stepan’s sister, or whatever. Anyway I digress – I don’t use the term but I kinda like that smarmy douchebucket, will go with that.

by BigB22 on Jan 4, 2012 12:54 AM EST up reply actions

I mean I have a disabled sister and its really an offensive term. I don’t take any offense to it but I don’t think there is any reason to use such on a board like this. There are plenty of alternatives, especially when you have the time to think about it, I think its better off for everybody if stuff like that and other offensive things are cut down on. This is the internet its extremely public, and to your comment on were all adults here could be misguided at best. You have no idea who comes over hear to read this stuff, could be a kid of age 10 or an adult of age 80 we have no idea.

NOTHING IS OFFENSIVE TO ANYONE

…who has no idea what they’re talking about.

being called a retard isn’t a high crime unless, perhaps, you have a brother or a friend who is developmentally disabled.

being called a homo isn’t a big deal unless, perhaps, you or someone you care about happens to be gay.

…et cetera.

and, honestly. have some bloody imagination. like there isn’t a list as long as my arm of perfectly obvious things with which to insult that ill-tempered, rugrat-saddled, oft-traded mouth-breather danny briere.

So your logic is that as long as you are not offended by the usage of these words that it is OK to use them?

Way to see yourself as the center of the universe. The people who run this blog do a good job at restricting the use of offensive words, instead of complaining about it and giving them a hard time maybe you should be thankful that they don’t let online chats descend into the abyss of profane tirades.

they are just ignorant to the world around them…

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 4, 2012 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

As the dad of 3 year old budding Ranger fan, who also happens to have Downs Syndrome, I just want to say that I appreciate the thread here and the heavy participation – regardless of what your opinion is on the matter. The term retard doesn’t personally offend me… didn’t before Elliott came along, and doesn’t after. I hear it used all the time and rarely take exception because I know the person saying it or writing it is usually not being malicious toward my son or any other person with Downs. Plus, he’s a beautiful little boy in the eyes of his parents and others who love him – regardless of somebody else’s ignorance or just poor choice of words. However, just because I’m not offended, doesn’t mean someone else won’t be – and don’t for a minute think that we don’t have readers of this very blog who don’t have Downs themselves. Just like we probably have some who are from the LGBT community.

Look I’m not big into censorship in the form of removing people’s offensive comments – whatever they may be and whomever they offend. What I do support is the right of others to openly judge those comments and point out the gaffe for others to see. Brandon does this perfectly in my opinion with regard to the “retard” term… and I think those of us who are sensitive to this and other comments should simply follow suit. There’s no reason to bash someone about the head for a poor choice of words, or scream censorship when someone gets called out.

This simple rule should prevail – you write, you own it. Think before you post – if that’s too much to ask, perhaps you should stick to lurking. Otherwise, let’s get back to hockey…

Good post, I hear what you are saying and I agree.

by BigB22 on Jan 4, 2012 10:00 AM EST up reply actions

First of all, I do not use the word and I am not defending my own prejudices.

Secondly, you totally missed the point. The point was that we use a HUGE amount of offensive words and terms here and it seems a bit hypocritical to single out just one, especially since it is not one of the more offensive ones we see daily. I am not ignorant and I am not giving anyone a hard time. I just found it odd and pointed it out.

I think either you have none of it our you allow all of it, so long as it isn’t hate speech or a personal attack. If he were making fun of someone who had a disability, that would be a totally different story. But much the same way that alarms don’t go off when we say “that was a gay powerplay”, I did not expect it here.

That’s all I was saying, and I was not trying to start an argument or give anyone here a hard time. I respect the mods here, they do a great job, and think that this is one of the best run fan blogs around.

I did not expect this kind of discussion following my comment, and regret even bringing it up, so next time I will just keep it to myself.

by BigB22 on Jan 4, 2012 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

Nothing wrong with the discussion… actually I’m glad it was brought up. 99% of us on this board are sensitive, responsible people in my opinion. I don’t see anything wrong with pointing out that we should be consistent while not overreacting… hopefully this thread will help that along.

Hank is pretty much expected to give that kind of performance every game and he generally does. I don’t think anyone can say that this was Hank’s best game of the season as far as spectacular saves. Might not be even top 3.

We can always count on Hank, but we can’t always count on scoring. Rupp brought us from 0-2 to even. I am giving him the MVP for the day.

Jeez, tough call. I think my obvious top three are Rupp, Hank, Torts. (Richards 4th). Torts I will leave in third, but without his line matchups and matching players to the flow of the game, I think the end result would be much different.
That leaves Rupp and Hank. G-damn, those two goals by Rupp were so clutch. He scored exactly when we needed someone to step up and change the flow. Especially for a player who does not score that much, his goals were so important.
Now Hank, IDK, but it’s just something about him, I expect him to play supernatural in net. He plays at such a high level of play, I expect it. His average play is better than most goalies. He could be considered a star in every game, and he is a big reason why we are in first place. Saying all this , take your pick. any one of them could be your first star. What about the 21 hits between Cally and Dubi? This team makes it tough to pick an MVP. Mine would be Rupp, Hank a really close second.

This doesn’t qualify for MVP since it’s not one person, but the Rangers had 50 hits, 20 blocked shots. Dubi/Cally combined for 21 hits. Those aren’t goals or saves (well i guess blocked shots are saves of a sort), but to me that tells a big story.

Tie between Claude Giroux and King Henrik

Hear me out.

Yes, Brad Richards was in the right position to get the perfect rebound and slam it home “top shelf where momma hides the cookies”……but……if “OH MY GOD ISN’T HE WONDERFUL CLAUDE GIROUX” hadn’t gone star-gazing at Callahan and tip-toed behind the net, Richards might never have gotten that rebound. So, for having an epic fail of a defensive lapse at the best possible moment for the Rangers and BRich – Giroux gets ‘half-a-hat’.

Henrik gets the other half – well – just for being typically (universally?) marvelous. If he keeps this shit up and doesn’t get the Vezina – we’ll have a right to be pissed.

by dbmaven on Jan 3, 2012 11:16 PM EST reply actions

On that play, as bad as Giroux’s mistake was, JVR is literally standing around doing nothing at the faceoff dot (where he should’ve slid down to cover Meszaros, who went behind the net to challenge Cally), and Lilja is spinning in front of Bob looking for someone to cover, before settling on Dubinsky (who should’ve been JVRs man).

Their whole defense fell apart on a play where they had 4 Flyers down low to cover 3 Rangers.

Dude didnt cover the puck (at least the camera doesn’t have evidence of it covered) on a great heads up effort that is a prime example of the heart this team has. Lundqvist was fantastic along with Rupper and Richie. Seeing Torts go nuts on the bench after the one goal (I believe it was Richards goal or Rupp’s tying goal, cant remember) was awesome!

My personal favorite quote of the year, I find it hilarious how we’ve seen some Paul Holmgren on 24/7 and the only visual and audio of Glen is that little quote makes me laugh every time. Hes always hiding in the background and he comes out with a bold prediction like that, and the team pulled through that was the best part.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 4, 2012 8:52 AM EST up reply actions

I'm going with...

Dubinsky.

His intangibles came into play in the latter second and all of the third period. He was handing out body checks and blocking shots; his deflection pass to Richards gave us the game-winning goal. Also, his shift just prior to Rupp’s first goal loosened the Flyers D and caused their goalie to have to get in the game.

An honorable mention belongs to Brandon Prust, whose passes to Rupp were perfect for the first two goals.
