New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils, Jan 31, 2012 7:00 PM EST

Tonight the New York Rangers will take on their Atlantic Division rivals, the New Jersey Devils. Tonight will mark the first game back from the All-Star break for both teams. The Rangers are currently riding a two game winning streak, while the Devils are coming in with an overtime loss.

Marian Gaborik notched a hat trick in the All-Star game, and even came away with MVP honors. My gut is telling me that he will have a big game tonight.

Enjoy the game tonight everyone!

I’ve been sick all day so I’ve been by my computer all day.

I’m hoping tonight we confuse the few devils fans at the pebble when the Marty chants go out.

The Move to Start Biron Tonight . . .

. . . is interesting. Say we face the Debbies in the playoffs, first round. Say Hank is (perish the thought) unavailable. It’ll be nice to know that Marty can match up well against Kovy and Parise et al.

the reason behind torts decision to play marty is...

…that he does not want hank bailing the boys out again…like the last time we played them, until we exploded for 4 lucky bounces in the 3rd.

if we lose, it probably won’t be on biron (knock on wood), but on the teams play. And if the team plays poorly, thats not bad at all cuz then it proves the team that “we’re not where we should be and theres still things to work on before the playoffs”

just my 2 cents. enjoy the game. I’m streaming it from rome and its 1:14am so hopefully its not a stressful game cuz i gotta be up early

by polishBLUE on Jan 31, 2012 7:14 PM EST reply actions

Do you know the real reason?

Meaning, what did Torts say about the decision?

by bkny on Jan 31, 2012 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

Prolly to just give Hank a rest from the all-star weekend. 2nd half of the season the schedules are really tight with a lot of games, so it’s good to see Hank get plenty of rest and start the play-offs with a full tank.

by Caerid11 on Jan 31, 2012 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

the press release? nope.

im guessing it would go along the lines of “we want to give Hank a break here since he played the sag” lol

by polishBLUE on Jan 31, 2012 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

i think it is a combination to make sure the rangers come to play as the extra effort is usually there for the back-up goaltender as well as the fact that Biron hasn’t started in a while… especially having missed the last game due to the flu

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

actually the goalie coach benoit allaire makes the schedule for starts

since hank played before the asg they made Biron start

i must have missed that… i don’t think that’s entirely true… because torts has to have the final say… i think allaire might give a suggestion based on what he see’s in practice… because certain games you want hank playing back to backs and such

Breaking Out

Wow, I think I’ve mentioned this, but we get hemmed into our d-zone waaaay too much. Like, we have an issue breaking out. Yeah, we block lots of shots, but christ, that also means we’re giving up a lot of shot opportunities, meaning we’re in our zone a ton. We have to work on breakouts…

by Guess Who's Back? on Jan 31, 2012 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know if thats true

They’ve played him a lot more on the PK this year, and reports I read say he’s more committed to defense than he ever was before. Honestly, I don’t know much about him at all…but I think if a player is really good on shitty teams (which he has been most of his career) the selfish label comes out, true or not.

It just might be that. Figure we’re set defensively with G/MCD/Staal/Sauer/MDZ and a kid/waiver guy in the last spot, and for the forwards, adding another sniper is a priority on the LW.

With Dubi’s lack of production, you can easily replace his defensive value and shed that contract, and we don’t need another contract coming back.

In a few years, maybe.

That game we played against them was not pretty. Showed our tenacity, and theirs, and we won which counts for something, but they could’ve easily beaten us by a wide margin if Hank wasn’t on top of his game. We just didn’t have the same number of serious quality shots, imho.

Not even a question, Boston. Flyers are always a mess, and the other teams? Pffft. Washington maybe if all their offensive stars are firing, but we finally have enough offensive depth that we should be able to keep up with them.

I don’t think I would want to play Washington in a 7 game series…I feel like they can explode offensively at anytime

yeah i figured i ask.

boston i think that can be exploited easier than the other teams. The problem is Thomas/other goalie is the best 1-2 ours id rate up there also.

Boston

But Philly and Washington have enough firepower to scare

New York fan stuck 30 minutes outside of Philly...

by Stepan's Sister on Jan 31, 2012 8:37 PM EST reply actions

first off, great name. Secondly, Teams like philly and washington scare me more than boston because philly/wash score in droves which requires perfect play from the Rangers to win. We don’t often have 4+ goal games but I feel as if they do. I have no stat sheet in front of me to back that claim up right now but my point is, the game we’d have to play against a flyers/caps team is more worrisome than a bruins game in which their team is much more like ours so we can just come out at straight up be the better team.

Why are there still NHL rinks without seamless glass anyway?

by gruss on Jan 31, 2012 9:21 PM EST reply actions

Not literally seamless, but without the metal stanchions between panes of glass.

by gruss on Jan 31, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

Seamless glass that bends is the best. That’s why they have in most of the Canadian arenas and places that don’t host basketball and other shit. The old seamless stuff didn’t bend and lots of guys got hurt from it. The stuff in the Pebble and MSG (as well as others) is the stanchion shit because it has to be able to be quickly removed on a daily/nightly basis.

by Caerid11 on Jan 31, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

by Hoggo on Jan 31, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

Gaborik finally realized how he can be good on the shootout. Act like it’s a breakaway. He pushes the puck forward and zooms in, makes no dekes, but stick handles just quickly enough to keep the goaltender guessing. It he does that more consistently, he’d probably score more.

That said, I wouldn’t put him out there. As it stands, Stepan is going out there.

coasts all the time is a liability defensively… and barely plays any minutes.. is soft on the boards… he’s good a shootouts big deal.. if we are going to shootouts every game we have bigger issues… Rupp plays a grind it out game which is the style game the rangers play… wolski is suited for a wide open game which is why he will never fit in our system… wolski

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Completely untrue.

Yes Wolski slacks at times, but his best game is puck possession behind the net, and rebounds in front, which is exactly the Rangers style.

He’s more valuable than Rupp, and we need skill.

Before making some asinine trade, why not give him a shot?

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

Because, we have other guys who can shift down to the 4th line, and create a more balanced teams. You need to look at the ripple effect.

Wolski comes in, gets put on a 3rd line with Dubi and Mitchell, than Boyle can slot down to the fourth, giving us a great defensive line.

Rupp is a below-average defensive and offensive player. At least WW has one of those.

what ripple effect? putting wolski on any line is a defensive liability… he’s horrible defensively… if you move dubinsky down you take his element from the richards line out of the equation…

If anything anisimov should be moved back between cally and dubi… with richards moving up with gabby and putting stepan on the wing…

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

And then you still have Boyle on the third line.

Boyle should be on the fourth line, with Prust and Fedotenko. That’s the best defensive line we have.

Wolski really isn’t any more of a defensive liability than Rupp is. Throughout their careers they have been pretty even defensively. Maybe Rupp has a slight slight edge, but Wolski’s ability to control the puck completely outweights it.

It gives you a top 9 of. Wolski, BR, Cally, Stepan, Gaborik, Anisimov, Dubinsky, Hagelin, Mitchell. How you want to break that up is up to you.

AA Step Gabby (skill with AA for defense)
Wolski BR Cally (skill with Cally for defense)
Hags Dubi Mitchell (energy/possession line)
Feds Boyle Prust (defensive line)

In a top 9 position, Wolski > Boyle, and in a 4th line position Boyle > Rupp. It’s a win/win

i have not once seen wolski play a strong game along the boards with any consistency… or for that matter throw the body… his unwillingness to buy into team defense is why he’s watching from a press box and his pouting about not playing and denying a conditioning stint is something i don’t want in the locker room… guys like rupp bring the intangibles to the game… he’s a great locker room guy and he will stand up for his teammates… wolski is an enigma who shows up once every 10-15 games… thats why he was traded out of phoenix for Roszival yes Roszival…

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

putting richards with wolski would be the biggest mistake ever… richards is not a defensive minded center and also a liability defensively it’s only workable because we have two workhorse 2 way forwards in dubinsky and cally on his flanks… which eases the burden i shudder at the possibility of having wolski with richards they may score some goals, but they are going to give up as many as they score… we play a team defense not a run and gun…

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, great. We have a line of Dubi, BR, and Cally, who can’y score for shit together.

If that’s your argument, just put Wolski with Dubi and Mitchell, so his defensive liabilities aren’t recognized. Rupp is a defensive liability as well.

Hagelin-Stepan-Gaborik gives us one defensive liability.
Anisimov-Richie-Cally gives us one defensive liaibility.
Wolski Dubinsky Mitchell gives us one defensive liability.

FIRST you argue that you want the 3rd and fourth lines to be defensive. NOW you argue that you want to strong defensive players on each line.

So now we want 10 out of 12 forwards to be two-way/defensive. I’m sorry, but you need more offense than that.

i have not refuted wolski offensive, but he can’t play defense at all and is not committed to playing defense… therefore he has no place on the team… rupp doesn’t see big minutes he’s not relied upon for scoring, that is what our current top 6 is for… personally i’d like to see arty back up in top 6… rupp serves a converse purpose to the one you expect of him… yet you insist he’s terrible because of his point totals which is completely outside the scope of his purpose… i guess lundqvist shouldn’t play either he can’t score… thats basically the argument you are making… rupp purpose to hit and fight if need be so prust doesn’t have to anymore… and that’s what he does and has a knack for scoring in the clutch which is something not a lot of players can do… he comes up big in big games… aka Winter Classic…

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

what i’m arguing is if you want him in you have to remove somebody in the top 6… nobody else on the team does what rupp does, check, forecheck, and fight… he keeps prust on the ice for times when we need him instead of in the box on a fighting major…

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll respond to both of your comments here.

You are completely misunderstanding my argument. I don’t expect Rupp to score. In fact, like you said, what he’s good at his hitting/fighting/etc. That’s exactly my issue with him.

On another team, he might be a perfect guy to slot in the lineup. This team has enough toughness. My point is that we should sacrifice some of that toughness (Rupp) for some skill (Wolski).

And no, we don’t have to remove someone from the top 6. We don’t have to at all. Our top 3 lines are a mish-mash of skill/energy/defense. There’s no rhyme or reason to them. Boyle is currently on the third line, which is not a good fit for him.

Boyle should be put into Rupp’s position on the fourth line. That will give us a great defensive fourth line. Next, put Wolski in Boyle’s spot. At this point Boyle is being put in a spot where we are relying on him to score goals. Put Wolski in his spot on one of the top 3 lines, and let him add to the scoring.

Gaborik Richards Stepan Anisimov Dubinsky Callahan Hagelin Wolski and Mitchell are your top 9. It doesn’t matter how you break them up, because that depends on how Torts feels after he takes his morning shit.

Your 4th line is now Feds-Boyle-Prust rather than Feds-Rupp-Prust, which is a huge improvement as well.

Intangibles? Back to this argument again? If your entire argument is about things that can not be valued in any way, well than it’s difficult to say anything back to it.

Fuck if he’s a great locker room guy than let him do that, in the fucking locker room. Not on the ice.

If Wolski can show up every 10-15 games and still put up over .5ppg, than I’d love to have that on my team. Dude is in a contract year. He’ll be motivated.

If you haven’t seen him play strong against the boards than you haven’t watched him consistently. That’s where he thrives the most. No he doesn’t throw the body, but goals win games not hits.

You complain that he doesn’t show intensity, but than trash him for being upset about not playing. That’s a big unreasonable.

Wolski’s NHL career point totals.

50
48
42
65
35

249 points in 402 games.

So if we are going to use stats, let’s do it the right way.

you cannot compare him to rupp… they are not the same type of player… 4th line is energy… a lazy lackadaisical player is not bringing energy… 3rd line is a defensive line that grinds really well… again not wolski type… so essentially you’d be looking at moving one of Hagelin, Stepan, Gaborik, Richards, Dubinsky, Callahan out of the lineup…

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Read what I wrote above.

Shift Boyle down to the 4th line (which is where he should be), and it opens up a spot for Wolski in the top 9.

Shit, put him with Richie and Cally, and let AA play with Dubi and Mitchell if you want a “defensive” 3rd line.

He brings more value than Rupp. Dude has like .6 PPG in his career. Rupp is like .06

why don’t we compare wolski to brashear then… omg he has better offensive numbers… wow… lol that’s an invalid argument… also he was playing top line minutes aka 25 minutes a game… he’s not going to get that if he takes rupps spot which is 7 minutes… guy is a one dimensional player on a team that focuses on team defense… notice how badly the rangers played with feds and dubi out of the lineup and wolski in… the balance was completely thrown off…

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

we lose one game and it’s chaos… maybe rupp shouldn’t be in the lineup ever… well i guess his two goals in the WC weren’t needed… wolski can score 50 points congrats Rupp has a Stanley cup and has a knack for coming up big… wolski doesn’t end of story…

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

Omg……

Can you at least attempt to read my comments before responding? It makes conversation better.

It’s not chaos, at all. I’ve been calling for this for weeks, and tonight just reinforced my belief. The fact of the matter is that we don’t have enough offense. We have too many grinders and not enough scorers. And a lot of players have Stanley Cups, since when is that an argument for being a good player?

If Wolski gets slotted in a top 9 spot, he is more effective there than Boyle.
If Boyle moves down into a 4th line spot, he is more effective than Rupp.

It’s that simple. If the “end of story” for you is that the guy has won a cup and that he is “clutch”, whatever the fuck that means, than I guess I’m at a loss for words. Impossible to argue with something that can’t be calculated.

All I know is we need more offense, and Wolski has a better chance of bringing in than Rupp.

And just to counter your point even further, every full season Wolski plays he is one of the top forwards in points per minute.

if he played more minutes earlier in his career he would have done even better. He’s never really been a 25 min guy.

Let him play 12 minutes a night, and put up a point every other game. That’s much more effective than what Rupp will bring.

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. it’s beyond arguing because you just want to put wolski in to give more offense and fail to see the negative ramifications of putting him on a line with richards (awful defensively) and callahan… Apparently a stanley cup winner means nothing anymore and if a player doesn’t have a good points per game then he’s not worth playing… considering the rosters that the Avs had when he was putting up those points, sakic forsberg svatos, hejduk smyth, liles his numbers are skewed… he’s been traded twice and on his way out with the rangers… obviously there’s something wrong there… so yes give him that spot watch him do nothing and listen to the bitching about how much of nothing he does… he’s had a fair opportunity and he’s just dead space waiting to be cleared…

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Jan 31, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

Sigh.

Numbers are skewed? He put up .7PPG on the Coyotes. The Coyotes!

I understand the ramifications. I’m saying that the defensive dropoff from Rupp to Wolski is completely outweighed by the increase in offense. Also, since Boyle is being dropped down into Rupp’s 4th line spot, that line becomes better on both ends of the ice. Wolski takes Boyle’s spot in the top 9, which increases our offense as well.

It’s a two-step process. Replacing Boyle with Wolski on a scoring line, and replacing Rupp with Boyle on a defensive line. BOTH are improvements.

I fail to see how the guy has had a fair opportunity if he has played 9 games this year due to injury.

This is where you blame Torts for the loss. Should’ve used Henrik tonight. Biron looked shakey and sadly he gave up a point for no reason. Sadly Biron’s record against the Devils is not that spectacular.

Be lucky you got a win tonight Devils fans. Henrik was not in net.

by NYR #35 Richter on Jan 31, 2012 9:41 PM EST reply actions

guess Torts thought the sabres would be a tougher test for a goalie. He was betting on a dominating victory that wouldnt test biron much.

The Sabres are 25th in goals scored, and tied for last in the conference.

Banking for a dominating victory over the Devils? That happens next to never.

I don’t get why Hank didn’t start tonight honestly.

by Five-Tool Tool on Jan 31, 2012 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

It was just Biron’s turn. Can’t put this game on the coach for not starting Hank, because then that becomes the excuse EVERY night that Biron is in for a loss. Biron was supposed to get the Winnipeg game but was ill, so he got tonight.

by Caerid11 on Jan 31, 2012 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

Biron’s turn was suppose to be Winnipeg at the Garden, but he had the flu. Torts gave Henrik one extra day of rest after the all-star break to give Biron that chance to play the Devils.

It’s really simple. If Biron’s record against the Devils sucks balls, then Henrik should’ve played tonight and Biron kicks his old team in the ass. Because Henrik would not have given up that type of a goal within the final minutes of regulation.

Let me also say this, I’m happy with how Biron has filled in when Henrik has gotten a mental night off. But once again rewarding an extra night before going to Buffalo was not necessary. Henrik was needed tonight because this was a divisional game.

Remember on 24/7 when Torts said the Flyers game in December was important, but don’t over look the Islanders game because it’s a divisional game as well. Their start was key and they did win against both teams.

Torts on this night dropped his own ball. He needs to fine his own ass on this one. This was a 3-2 win and sadly Biron coughed up a bad goal within the last minute of regulation. The Devils got 2 points let alone got a point for no reason.

I’m happy they got one, but ticked off the Devils came away with two that they didn’t deserve. Fatso can celebrate winning the shootout, but he got lucky that Lundqvist was not in net. If he was, the Rangers win the mental battle right there and it’s another loss for the Devils.

Mike Sullivan needs to go

The Rangers have enough players to have at least a slightly above average PP. This is purely a coaching and scheme problem. How many years are the Rangers and Torts going to allow this guy to be here with these type of results?

What surprised me the most though is that bonehead play by Callahan. I think that’s one of the first times this year where he has made an absolutely horrible play. He’s the captain and he is unbelievably important to this team but that was god awful.
