by jhipko13 on Jan 5, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Just a joke about how they could see McD cover a puck with his hand during all that chaos yet they couldn’t see blatantly loose pucks all game.

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Ohh, that reminds me...

… not to stir up trouble, but my eyes bugged out of my head when i read this late yesterday. Still had the tab in Chrome open to the NHL rules, get a load of this:

No defending player, except the goalkeeper, will be permitted to fall on the puck, hold the puck, pick up the puck, or gather the puck into the body or hands when the puck is within the goal crease. For infringement of this rule, play shall immediately be stopped and a penalty shot shall be ordered against the offending team, but no other penalty shall be given. The rule shall be interpreted so that a penalty shot will be awarded only when the puck is in the crease at the instant the offense occurs. However, in cases where the puck is outside the crease, Rule 63 may still apply and a minor penalty may be imposed, even though no penalty shot is awarded. The significant factor when determining whether or not a penalty shot is warranted is the location of the puck at the time it was held, grabbed or gathered into the body. If the puck is in the crease, penalty shot. If the puck is outside the crease and gathered into the body of a player (other than the goalkeeper) who is inside the crease, minor penalty). See also Rule 67 – Handling Puck.

Emphasis mine. Who writes these things? They’re so generic, it’s crazy, but the above doesn’t even specify intent. So, if in a goalmouth scramble a defenseman falls on top of the puck in the crease, even if he didn’t even know where it was, it should be a penalty shot.

The refs did a terrible job, but man they are not given anything well-constructed to work with.

by VorAbaddon on Jan 5, 2012 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

Way I saw it, he slid into the crease and the puck was lost in the area of his hip, and then came out. Whether he did or did not cover it with his hand couldn’t be determined by slow-motion replay. The refs kept losing pucks the whole game, and even earlier in the game the ref fucking TOLD Henrik he couldn’t see the puck. He had to ask Henrik if it was frozen.

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

They also missed showing some of those plays the refs blew dead when the puck was loose. Would have been nice of HBO to show that too.

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, but that’s what I’m saying. He doesn’t have to cover it with his hand at all, that’s a misnomer that fans/coaches/players understand because, 9 times out of 10, that’s how it’s called.

But, by the letter of the law of the game, the player falling on it or gathering it in ANY way. So, lets say as a player, i just sit on the puck, the rule above says it’s the same treatment.

That’s where I think the confusion comes into play, and I think this was all about a “make up call” for the refs losing sight of the puck earlier in the games. They used this as a way to get a call back, which is the worst way to try and “even out” a mistake.

I think that’s the thing the league needs to stop more than anything. It’s so ubiquitous in our sport that players, coaches and announcers openly discuss make-up calls, and the exchange with Talbot during 24/7 in Ep 3 flat out proves refs do it.

The problem is, you can’t make up a call from earlier in the game with a call that late because it just engenders this type of confusion and anger.

by VorAbaddon on Jan 5, 2012 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

Agree, I said it in that other thread we discussed this, as with anything in life, some of the worst mistakes are people who make a mistake, and then do some amazingly dumb shit trying to fix the earlier mistake, and wind up fucking things up beyond repair.

I’d really like some clarification as to:

1. Were they supposed to? As in, is it custom? I can’t remember for the life of me in past Classics, but I think it should be done.

2. Who actually made that decision?

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

Same. I think they are supposed to and have in the past.

It was never more apparent than at the end of the Classic, with the Capitals 0.6 seconds away from victory; and then after the game, when the Penguins and Capitals broke a two-year tradition of postgame handshakes by leaving the ice after a stick raise to the fans:

Apparently it’s supposed to happen, but teams get pissy and don’t do it. That’s fucking horseshit. Teams should get fined for that crap.

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

And apparently it was the Penguins who walked off

So, naturally, he also managed to steal the show in the final episode as well. In one of the coolest scenes of the episode, Boudreau had this to say when the Penguins stormed off the ice, refusing to shake hands.
“F*** them all, we’ll go then.”

Nice job.

I don’t think they should have to in the first place.

With everything surrounding the classic, it should be done for the fans. It’s already enough of a spectacle, why not add a finishing touch?

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

The handshakes are so artificial, so fake. I find it so silly.

It’s nice the whole idea of sportsmanship and whatnot, but who really believes these teams want to shake each others hands and act like they don’t despise each other?

Okay

So it was done in 2009 and 2010, but two classless teams descided against it

A 2 year tradition isn’t much to go on. So that means:

No shake in 08
Shake in 09
Shake in 10
No shake in 11
No shake in 12

So before now, it was, as noted above, about 50/50. If it’s meant to be, the league needs to make it so, but I honestly disagreed then (Not that I didn’t rib the Pens fans about it and so I expect to hear it about us) because there’s a difference.

In the playoffs, the shake happens because no matter what occured during the series, those two teams will not meet again until the next year. It’s time to shake the bad blood off for the summer, season’s over, and congratulate the winning team for the losers, while the winning team sends off their opponents with the respect due other players.

The Classic is mid-season. There’s games left to go, and the bad-blood rivalry only fuels more ratings later. Save the handshakes for the playoffs.

For folks like us, it’s pointless, but if it’s something that’s supposed to happen, they might as well do it. Have to figure the banter between the players during it would be worth its weight in gold during the 24/7 telecast.

It’s a little sore loser-ish too considering the past 2 losers decided to just walk off. But hell, the Canucks shook the Bruins hands last year, and the Bruins abused them physically to the point of needing police protection.

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

I agree it looks odd, but it’s gotta get addressed by the NHL. Tell them to shake or tell them DON’T shake and to save that for the playoffs. Leaving it up to the players means that we’re going to get 50/50 responses.

by VorAbaddon on Jan 5, 2012 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yup, that’s what I’m wondering. Does the NHL require it? I doubt it, because it got very little play when it happened last year, and Boudreau actually made a small stink about it. It’s probably nice to see for the casual fan though. For us we’d probably rather see an end-game brawl.

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Nah, End-Game is no fun. Gotta do it before the game even starts, a-la Hextall-era Flyers & Habs who had a locker-clearing brawl before the puck even dropped.

(Trivia: Hextall was actually NOT involved as the coach locked him in the equipment cage to prevent him getting hurt after realizing what was going on around the ice.)

After watching the series, I’m amazed at how much Hartnell drives that team. It seems like if he’s going, they’re going, and if he’s not, they’re not. Laviolette points it out a few times as well.

by Caerid11 on Jan 5, 2012 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

As much as Sir Fozzie has his cold streaks where his contract value utterly infuriates us all, I’ve never seen him out and out quit. After his divorce finalized, which did a lot to him as a player, he’s been pushing hard every game.

He’s also got a pretty good sense of humor. We’re fairly certain he reads BSH and he’s picked up on the #HartnellDown count on Twitter, plus there’s always the Scott Fartsmell saga.
