Rangers Vs. Sabres, Rangers Beat Sabres 1-0 In Shootout

The Rangers and Sabres met tonight in Buffalo in a game that was expected to be a physical, hard fought battle between the best team in the East and the most inconsistent team in the East.

Both teams played hockey....I think.

The first three periods were an endless cycle of dumped pucks, shots off the goalies pads, and turnovers, while the Henrik Lundqvist and Ryan Miller swapped simple saves. Both had a few fantastic ones, but overall the night wasn't too difficult for either.

The Rangers power play was the Rangers power play, so the team didn't get any goals again there, while the penalty kill was the penalty kill, so neither did the Sabres.

After an intense overtime period, the teams went into a shootout, where Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan scored for the Rangers, and only Jason Pominville scored for the Sabres.

Great game for Lundqvist, but overall not the most exciting 1-0 win you will ever see. Take the two points and move on!

ESPN doesnt know how to spell NHL. there was some stats that showed they had less than 14 minutes of hockey coverage in an 11 day span in january. every number 1 play on ESPN’s top 10 is a meaningless unoriginal dunk in an NBA game (except griffin’s the other day which was pretty legit)

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 1, 2012 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

this morning’s top 10 actually had like 6 hockey plays in it

Ha, ESPN

Two weeks ago, deadspin.com gave a running total of all the topics covered in that week’s SportsCenters.

Total hockey coverage: 13.5 minutes
Total coverage only on Tim Tebow: 30 minutes

I agree. When Boyes pulls that move, i don’t quite understand what the goalie sees, but only rarely is the goalie still in the crease when he scores.

OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.

just because no goals were scored doesnt mean it was a snoozefest. there was some good up and down action at times in this game and the OT was pretty awesome

the SO is fun and all but I would love to see more than only five minutes of OT because, you’re right, that was awesome

Actually on That’s Hockey 2nite they were talking about how exciting it was and that just becasue it was 1-0 didn’t mean it was dull at all. Also they could not stop talking about the King

There should be a sister website called, “Can you believe we got McDonagh for him?”

With a clock that just says “It has been x years x months, x days, x hours, x minutes, and x seconds since the Rangers can’t believe they got McDonagh for Gomez.”

by CrazyRangerFan on Feb 2, 2012 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

Call me old school (even though im only 21) but i enjoy these games more than 5-4 games. Every time down the sabres were in our zone youre fearful that one mistake or bad bounce could essentially end the game. PPs become more intense as you know the game hinges on the team being able to kill it off.

There was a 0-0 Rangers Devils game a couple years ago that was probably the most exciting game that season. two average goalies and the score would have been 6-5. Just because the goalies stop everything doesnt make the game boring

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 1, 2012 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Agreed.

However parts of the game were just complete defensive lockdowns, with no attempts at offense. Now that’s boring.

Take the win

Got two points even if it wasn’t by the prettiest method. Glad to see the majority of the Rangers shooters just going for fast, accurate shots instead of dekes.

As this was the first Ranger game I’ve been able to watch since the New Year I was hoping for more Ranger goals and less freaking icings…

Now they have a few days of rest and that’s good because they won’t be able to beat the Flyers if they continue scoring 0 goals a game.

Stralman

did Stralman but his skates on backwards tonight? He looked like he couldnt stand up out there. His worst performance of the year.
I thought Hank bailed them out again in the third (along with the post) a couple of times.
My main concern is that if we have this much trouble with Buffalo (while they’re missing their top scorer) we got issues.

was reading NHL.com

and saw alot of fans from boston , chicago , detroit ,buffalo and etc giving hank so much credit and its deserved. I just love seeing him get this attention is all . If he doesnt win the vezina this year i will write the NHL the most strongly worded email ever !! Here are some of the comments .

“Lundqvist, 3 shutouts in 6 games. Who is this guy… He’s gonna beat Howard for wins if this keeps going on. " – Det Fan
“Lundqvist for Vezina! " Chicago fan followed by a reply by a boston fan !!
“There aren’t even any contenders even close enough to Lunds to get it. Its his already.” – Boston Fan

’Pretty exciting game considering it was scoreless. Lundqvist made it happen tonight, (crap). Looking forward to our game next week. Should be another doozy. " – Devils Fan

You get the drift. The man is amazing and deserves this recognition and should def get the Vezina this year and even the MVP !!!

Funny, read those comments too. The Rangers have been getting a lot of air time the past month or two, for obvious reasons. I have been watching games that have nothing to do with them, and I will hear a mention of them, which is almost unheard of. You have to recognize the elphant in the room, and we are not going anywhere. If a few of the four or five slackers(Scoring wise) step up, we’ll be that much better off. Shit, I am the knucklehead that predicted Dubi-AA-Cally line would score near 90 goals. I could not have been farther off. Admitting my mistake, it will now take the curse off Dubi and AA. So it is written, so it shall be done.

Don’t worry about Boyle. He’s fine. Yes, you’d like more offense, but he’s being purposely slaughtered by Tortorella to make sure Stepan and Gaborik can run rampant in the offensive zone.

Dubi and Anisimov have to be more gooder. They’re driving play fine, but no points = not good enough.

The King is unreal. Nothing more to say about Dubi and AA. The coach is saying by his actions with them. It speaks volumes. Very disappointing.

by Richter1994 on Feb 2, 2012 6:08 AM EST reply actions

AA is improving and got 16 minutes to show for it. Hope he is rounding the corner, even if it doesn’t translate to scoring. Dubi logged just 8 minutes last night though :(

by BigB22 on Feb 2, 2012 7:06 AM EST up reply actions

you will find no bigger supporter of both of them than me but the reality is that they are showing nothing right now. the reality is that Dubi had like 10 goals in calendar year 2011 spanning over parts of the 2 seasons so maybe this is what he is. if that’s the case then he’s overpaid. I’m sure the Sabres are thinking the same with Stafford. Read the Hockey Rodent.

by Richter1994 on Feb 2, 2012 7:33 AM EST up reply actions

perfectly worded by the rodent

I could forgive all if only he’d not play like a pussy. I count 34 hits (15th on the team) and just 22 blocked shots (14th) this season. If you’re not scoring, not hitting, not blocking shots and you’re winning just 45% of your faceoffs…

by rmg10 on Feb 2, 2012 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

Did anyone notice how many icings the Rangers had last night? They were making sloppy passes that missed connection and even icing it when they had no need to. A good portion of the Sabres shots and scoring opportunities came off of the ensuing faceoff win. I hope they clean up that portion of their game by Sunday.

I liked that AA had three shots and seemed to play more aggressively. He got 16 minutes or so too.

Dubi on the other hand… not good.

We need both those guys to start putting up points.
