Rangers Vs. Flyers: Power Play Success Earns Rangers Fifth Straight Victory Over Flyers

The New York Rangers came away with their fifth straight victory against the Flyers this season, with a 5-2 victory this afternoon. Ryan Callahan notched his second career hat trick today, including two power play goals as well. Henrik Lundqvist had another strong performance between the pipes to preserve the lead for the Rangers.

Just eight minutes in the first period, we saw Stu Bickel and Tom Sestito renew their rivalry once again. Sestito crashed the net after the whistle and Bickel took exception. Both would receive ten minute misconducts, but Sestito would get the extra minor for roughing. It's also worth noting that Stu Bickel was dressed as a seventh defenseman for this game, and saw some time on the right side of the fourth forward line.

Just 24 seconds later (ironic huh?), Ryan Callahan cashed in on the power play to give the Rangers an early 1-0 lead. Marian Gaborik made a great pass over to Callahan, which wound up fooling Sergei Bobrovsky. However, just over five minutes later, Wayne Simmonds tied up the team with an beautiful deflection in front of Lundqvist.

Follow after the jump for more.

Star-divide

Andrej Meszaros would take a hooking penalty with about five minutes remaining in the first period. The Rangers would capitalize with another power play goal, this time from Marian Gaborik. Richards picked up his second assist of the game with a excellent slap pass to allow Gaborik to redirect the puck past Bob. The Rangers headed into the locker rooms with a big 2-1 lead.

Although, the lead only last six minutes into the second period as Claude Giroux scored on a breakaway. Simmonds caught the Rangers on a defensive change to spring Giroux on a breakaway. Lundqvist would make an initial diving glove save on Giroux, but Giroux jammed it into the net shortly after.

Just three minutes later, the Rangers would score their third power play goal of the evening. Scott Hartnell was whistled down for high-sticking. Ryan Callahan got his second goal of the evening off of a great pass by Michael Del Zotto. The great passing on the power play allowed Del Zotto to get a lane and slip it over to Callahan for the easy tap-in.

Again, the Rangers went into the intermission with another one goal lead. Six minutes into the third period, Artem Anisimov scored on yet another tap-in, in front of the Flyers net. Derek Stepan picked up the first assist with a great feed over to Anisimov. Also, Marian Gaborik picked up his fourth point of the night with his third assist of the game.

The final goal of the game would give Ryan Callahan his second career hat-trick against the Flyers. Brad Richards made a great pass over to Hagelin who was sitting on the far post. Hagelin mishandled the puck, and Callahan picked up the loose puck and put it into the empty net. With that assist, Richards picked up his third assist of the game as well. Richards currently has four points in his last two games, talk about breaking out of a slump.

The Rangers power play was clicking all afternoon long and was the deciding factor in this game, and it's finally nice to see that working. With this win, the Rangers once again widen the gap with their Atlantic Division lead. The Rangers will be in action again tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 against the Washington Capitals back at Madison Square Garden.

Rangers are good at exploiting offense-heavy team

and the power play was a microcosm of that…the Flyers play a very aggressive, counter-strike-oriented penalty kill and the rangers were able to capitalize….they need to improve against balanced teams like the Blues and Devils…let’s see success today can boost confidence and carry over into the game tomorrow.

@btown46

by Town on Feb 11, 2012 4:05 PM EST reply actions

Exactly.

All 3 of the flyers forwards are aggressive, and they give up a large amount of odd-man rushes because of it. Unless you have elite defensemen and goalies (they have good ones), you can’t get away with that.

Let’s hope the PP keeps up, and we can do it again tomorrow.

the reason the Flyers lose big at times is because they don’t have the goaltending to play the style they do. They think they do but Bryz isn’t making good on his contract and Bob isn’t an elite goalie.

by OhCallyMyCaptain on Feb 11, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

Well, the style they play only works with a top 3 goalie and a great defense.

They are aggressive, and their forwards get caught, and while their defense and goaltending aren’t bad, they aren’t good enough to cover odd-man rushes.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the majority of Flyer fans i know are obnoxious blind biased people who will never give credit to where it is due.

When i saw that i got a warm feeling in my tummy, but it doesn’t excuse all the trash talk ive heard over the years.

Keep in mind, trash talk hasn’t been on these boards but with flyers fans in person on other boards etc..

maybe the BSH people are overall better but I am still wary of all Flyers Fans in general.

Of course we all trash talk, but there is a difference between the fans and players after the game, you give credit where it is due, I think the rangers’ players and fans are excellent at this, every interview i see they are really positive and talk about how great of a team the Flyers are, deservedly so.

I don’t know the crowd at BSH well, but the Flyer fans i know are trash, you aren’t going to convince me otherwise its impossible lol.

There’s witty trash talk and then there’s Flyer fan’s trash talk. at least from the kids im used to dealing with, one of my friends from philly is so stubborn whenever we win he just tells me to think about that shootout loss to end our season the season before last.

by rain-g-errs on Feb 11, 2012 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

Jump to conclusions

Not trying to “convince you otherwise”, just trying to point out that you are looking at a small sample size and jumping to conclusions about the rest of the fan base. The guys at BSH are solid dudes.

Seriously though, I try to make a point of fraternizing with the “enemy” and being respectful to the fans of the opposition and to other hockey fans no matter what colors they wear. That is probably just me though. Agree to disagree.

And I still dont understand why they always jump back to the Mets sucking. The Eagles lost the division to the Super Bowl winning Giants, the Flyers have been trounced 5 times by the Rangers, and the snarkiest comment they can think up is “lol mets”. I would probably pack up and move if the Eagles won the Super Bowl. This city is full of low life apathetic scum.

I understand as fans we have a bias towards the teams we root for. but Flyer fans complaining about the officiating when they commit a penalty every 30 seconds or so is delusional. the Rangers could have easily gotten 5 more power plays in this game. don’t call everything but letting the Flyers get away with crap just because they do it constantly is BS too.

unfortunately it won’t matter by then. he is the key to the Cup and why Sather may make a big splash with the King getting older and having a shot this year.

Dont look now but the Rangers are 3rd overall in Goal Differential (+42) without any Bruins-esque blowout games.

After last year I’d never have guessed I’d be seeing some of the numbers the rangers have put together this year (well, actually the PP is worse than I’d imagine, but heres hoping todays game was a turning point)

Does anyone think how we scored our PP goals this game was reminiscent of how we were scoring them at the start of the season? Picture perfect setups that looked EA Sports-ish?

I don’t know but that Gabby deflection was beautiful. Haven’t seen one of those in so long I am proud haha.

Hope this gets the PP going now. Pretty goals, ugly goals, matters not to me. Long as we score em.

as bad as the PP has been, they have more PP goals than PP goals against.

like i been sayin, gain the zone and attack quickly before the PK can get set. dump ins and perimeter passing is a waste of time.

loved boyle’s reaction after his fight. “WHEW!”

i think the Flyers should just keep playing Rinaldo and Sestito, lots and lots of minutes.

This rivalry is going get great for the next handful of years.

Not that is isn’t awesome enough already. But the Rangers have this defensive system they play behind possibly the young core of defensemen in the league with the best goalie. And the Flyers have probably one of the top young offensive players in the league with Giroux being a top 5 center in the NHL.

The matchup of Giroux, Couturier, Schenn, Van Riemsdyk, Simmonds, Voracek, Read, and most likely Hartnell going up against the likes of Staal, Girardi, McDonagh, Del Zotto, Sauer, and eventually Erixon and McIlrath will be an interesting one to say the least.

Very well said

I never really thought of it in that technical of a sense but I love Ranger-Flyer games so how can I resist?

by Kevin Papa on Feb 11, 2012 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

Cant let this overlook the fact we could still use one more high scorer

I love the energy and win today but we just spent like 3 days going over who’s slumping and who needs to get traded. We still need to pick up a scorer or our boys need to continue picking up the slack or we will still fall short somewhere don’t u think? Flyers D is terrible I think that’s why we got those goals what do we do against more talented goalies and D ?

haha occasionally but yeah we still should pick up a rental at the deadline and maybe pull some kinda magic in the off season

they are also the most penalized in the league.

by rain-g-errs on Feb 12, 2012 12:38 AM EST up reply actions

and they still don’t get all the penalties they deserve.

by Richter1994 on Feb 12, 2012 5:15 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah that’s the thing. Refs cant call them on everything so they to play beyond the edge. Also refs have a tendency to try to even things up so they will call it the other way.

So instead of 10pp v. 0pp you wind up getting 5pp v 5pp. To me that is why they lead in penalties and also opportunities.

you see but why? if a team continuously commits fouls then why not call them? the Flyers are using their sticks almost after every whistle. they do it on a regular basis, why not call them for it? if you call it then they stop.

Simmonds, and may I’m biased, should have gotten the extra 2 during his fight with Boyle. Boyle did everything he could not to fight. But when the guy is punching him then what is he supposed to do? Simmonds clearly instigated and initiated the fight (what a shock as his team is getting spanked).

When a game is lopsided and teams like the Flyers are on the short end of the stick, EVERYONE knows what’s coming (the fights and nasty play). this is where I fear for the King where the Flyers send out the mafia squad to take the King out.

Oh I agree, its just they way it is unfortunately.

I thought last night the refs did a good job on getting things calmed down.

they did ok. the one play that really got me incensed was when Prust was along the boards in the defensive zone, the puck was long gone, and I think it was Timonen that leveled him. Not only was interference but it was a clear cheap shot as Prust went down hard because he wasn’t expecting it.

by Richter1994 on Feb 12, 2012 8:13 AM EST up reply actions

They have the most powerplays for 2 reasons. First, they are the Sean Avery of teams. They throw you off your game and cause you to take retaliatory penalties. Second, they are all-offense and sometimes the only way to slow down Jagr or Giroux is with a hook.

by BigB22 on Feb 12, 2012 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

we’ve outscored them 19-8 this season, and 29-10 over the last 7.

I like those stats :D

Don’t trade Dubi. Pull him out of the lineup and the ship wobbles.

by voice22 on Feb 12, 2012 2:16 AM EST reply actions

he is unappreciated but geez 5 goals?

by Richter1994 on Feb 12, 2012 5:15 AM EST up reply actions

http://hockeyrodent.com/ Here’s one advocating for Nash and he’d give up the Dubi, Kreider, and #1 pick package to do it. As much as I like Nash I don’t know that I would do that deal.

by Richter1994 on Feb 12, 2012 5:45 AM EST reply actions

I wouldn’t personally but Nash is a hell of a player and nobody thought they would be able to get a shot at him so I could see over payment.

CBJ is in a good position right now. The market is currently quiet and if they do a deal for Nash then they should get a nice haul, I just don’t know if it will be from the Rangers. If they can take Kreider out of the deal and substitute Thomas and maybe a player like St. Croix, then I think I do it. Dubi has to go to make the $$ come close to working though more cap savings would have to be done. I do believe that the market picks up within 10 days of the deadline.

by Richter1994 on Feb 12, 2012 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

The Ottawa Sun had the same trade in the paper last night. Ugh, don’t deal Kreider please.. and don’t get Nash.

by BigB22 on Feb 12, 2012 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

yes that’s what the Rodent was commenting on.

by Richter1994 on Feb 12, 2012 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

Actually he mentions

that its noted Rumor Monger Bruce Garrioch from Ottawa who came up with Dubi, Kreider and a 1st for Nash, either way its a no deal

hate to say this but my friend there are tweets that Howson is at the Ranger game today. so that’s 2 games in a row (Philly yesterday). so it’s either Carter or Nash I would assume or possibly Brassard.
