Can You Hear Us?...
Well, I cant.
Hi guy, I've been following this forum for about a year now and this is my first post. Anyway...
I was born a Rangers fan and the Garden IS my second home(expensive home). But something about Rangers home games has been bothering me more and more over time. The fans. Whether im at the games or following them on tv, I cant help but notice the volume the fans make is a bit sub par. Now im not trying to knock the garden faithful at all, and im not trying to compare our fanbase to other franchises, but its tough not to notice after a while.
I have been to see the Rangers play at the Pru, Wells Fargo, and TD Garden. Well I cant deny it, their fans ARE louder. Even on tv its noticeable. Last season for example, when the big fat baby named Boudreau said he "couldn't even hear the fans", the Garden Faithful started chanting "Can You Hear Us?". I was proud that they stepped up to that idiot. But when game 5 came back to Washington, their fans chanted "We Are Louder". As stupid and childish as that may seem, they were right. Washington was so much louder that whole series. They were also into the game throughout, while Rangers fans seemed timid and quiet at boring times.
Another thing that bothers me that's a bit off topic is the dress code for the games. When you see Caps home games, the fans look like a sea of red surrounding the ice. At Wells Fargo, a sea of orange, etc etc. When i see the Garden, specks of blue. Its understandable that most weeknight games people come straight from work, but it still bugs me. It deprives the Garden of its intimidation.
So does anyone else notice any of this? Or am I crazy? Am I expecting too much from my fellow die hard fans? Let me know.

The whole aspect of playing at MSG makes up for the lack of coordinated color, IMO. You’re in MSG, with the fans and the lights beating down on you, and it can get loud at times. Granted…the only other arenas I’ve Bern to are The Pebble and the swamp…. and those places are tombs

I’d rather see a bunch of diffrent jerseys from graves to greschner to gabby than everyone wearing the same ovenchkin jersey anyday. It’s been true for years that the “true” fans have been getting priced out of most games but I find once playoff times come we step it up and the true fans find a way into the building. Alot of the teams you mentioned their fans are nowhere to be found if the teams are losing. Oh and the Pru is half empty evan if their team is winning except when they play us or the flyers.
Appreciate the comments
Both of you have made valid points. Its sad but true. The real fans are getting priced out. In my 18 years of existence i have had the privilege of going to 48 rags games at the garden. Not once have i ever left the blue seats.
damn thats a lot of games for only being 18, Im almost 21 and Ive only been to about 6 or 7 games lol, and they were either gifts from a friend or blue seats, but I like the blueseats better anyways.

Down low, yes, real fans are getting priced out. There are people with suits on who clearly just got free company seats getting up to get beers and food during game play as if there is no game going on. They are, for the most part, completely oblivious and have no edicate for waiting for a whistle. Its one thing to not know the game and attend because you got invited, but have some awareness to whats going on around you. Like I don’t know anything about basketball but I know to not act obnoxious as if there aren’t true fans behind my trying to watch. Wait for the whistles, time outs and commercial breaks to get up.
With that being said, yeah some places can get “louder” but many other arenas blare obnoxious music and have much louder sound systems. So “louder” does not mean they are better fans or more dedicated. IMO (and I have been to 15 games this season at MSG) the MSG crowd is the most “responsive,” not necessarily the “loudest.” The people who scream “shooooooooot” every time a ranger has the puck over the red line need to shut the f*ck up but that’s another story for another day.
I strongly disagree about the Pru center being louder. That is simply not the case, I have been to Rangers Devils games at both arenas (this season and seasons past) and the Pru center was not even close to MSG. And when the Devils are playing anyone but the Rangers you can hear a pin drop, half the people don’t even stand for a goal.
I also think the sound of the crowd at MSG for some reason does not translate well on TV as well as other newer arenas. I was at the one of the Rangers home games during the Caps series and it was LOUD; the loudest I have ever heard it in my 100 plus games attended. Then I watched the next one on TV and I noticed how different the sounds were through the TV. Maybe its the "bowl’ shape of the arena as opposed to many of the new buildings with a more erect stadium style – “right on top of the ice”- kind of seating structures. It allows the upper decks to be higher than MSG but much closer in horizontal distance to the ice because you are right on top of it. The loudest fans are in the 400s and 300s at MSG but they are so much farther away from the ice, where all the game microphones are, because of MSG bowl shape.
And the TD garden argument… Yeah they might be louder right now, however the Bruins could not sell a ticket like 6 years ago. Now that they are good again the fans are back. At least during the shitty last decade for the Rangers, MSG has had fans in the building. Same goes for the Caps.
I think the atmosphere at MSG this season, from my pretty large sample sizes of games attended, has been as good as it has been in at least the last 5 years.

I have heard that theory before, on how the Garden is shaped in an old fashioned bowl therefore the fans are farther away. Its a good point. And as for the Pru, i think its louder than the Garden. But its the rags fans that are the loud ones. Rangers fans put more heart into the Pru than the Garden, but its understandable simply to have your presence made clear on the road.
And i agree with your point on the drunken shoooot screamers. As iv said iv never left the blue seats so i know exactly how that is.
yea, it's true
about the distance. I’d rather see a game in a vertical stadium than one that flares back and away like MSG. i also agree that true-blue fans are out-priced. when i was a taxi driver i was able to afford more games than i can now, and i’ve got a real “career.” sad.
uhm
please stop saying Rags. to me, thats an annoying term idiot devil fans use to demean us. we are the new york RANGERS. rags are what losers use to wipe their tears when we crush them :)
I can understand why some fans dislike it, but thats how my circle of fans communicate here in brooklyn.
i.e. “Catch the rags game last night”?
its just what iv grown up around. Let the idiot devils “fans” say what they want, ill stick to the way i say it
the shape of the Garden is why the sight lines are terrible
I havent seen anything in the near boards in 30 years. the rake is terribly designed. and the renovations were unable provide much improvement.

renovations still have 3 more years or so to go lol
by CrazyRangerFan on Feb 13, 2012 10:11 PM EST up reply actions
I chalk it up to mobile devices
I cant tell you how often I look around and people are texting or surfing on their mobile devices rather than watching the game. And its not just wives/gfs/teenagers (sorry if I offend).
I cant see paying $100 (which is what I pay) to see a live event, only to be mesmerized by my iPhone. if it were my kid, i would confiscate it. live in the moment, not the internet.

oh and I agree. I have been going to MSG for 30+ years. it seems quieter this year. possibly something with the acoustics due to the renovation?
Playoffs should straighten it out.

Very good point
I hadn’t thought of that. Iv completely forgotten that they had done renovations. Probably because they have yet to get to where i can afford to sit.
To quote my uncle:
“STILL NO F***ING CUPHOLDERS!!!”
you will get cup holders but you will also see that the rows are narrower and they stuffed at least one more seat per row. so the seats are narrower and there is less room for your legs. its basically following airplanes rules. and i am 5’8" and I have trouble with my legs.
but they seats are nice and new and cozy. and as long as I am sitting close to a Rangers fan I can deal.

I’m with you on that one! I went out to a restaurant and the kid with the family at the table next to ours spent the entire evening on his game player. I would never let my children get away with that. Dinner is family time, we talk about life, school, politics, sports, family, our next dream vacation, whatever. The new section I was in at the garden had a line of television screens along the front row banisters. You go to a game and watch it on television? Really, watching live sports demands more attention, not less. All the hot dogs and popcorn and beer and texting and such make the game pass in a heartbeat.
I’ve grabbed my phone out occasionally but it’s never during the play. Often times I’ll text a friend watching at home to find out what some call was or something. I got a fancy phone recently and have the gamecenter app, and you can watch replays of the goals on there, so that’s one other instance. But I agree, people are way too involved with these damn things. Enjoy the moment..
totally agree
dinner is to re-cap the days events and talk about what you learned in school. I have no problems hucking their mobile devices at a brick wall.
makes us sound like old guys.
and I saw those tvs. why bother to come to the game if you watch it on a screen. save it for when someone stands up in front of you.

I used to go to games and watch the whole thing on TV. Never even sit in my seat. Granted I was back in the Green Room watching it with the injured players so I had an decent excuse ;) Free food and drinks too.

I think a lot of other arena’s pump in extra fan noise through their audio system. Also, maybe the new renovations have something to do with the way sound resonates at MSG now. A little could be a result of the same thing that changed the sound of the old Yankee Stadium to the new one. Real fans are getting priced out. Who gives a damn though who has the loudest stadium? I want the best team. Plus, we all know that Ranger fans are phenomenal fans, whether they all get to MSG or not.
Disagree to a point...
I have been to 3 or 4 games this year and watch prob every other game on TV. I agree, MSG is not LOUD every game. When Toronto or Columbus or Nashville come to town, the crowd is subdued for sure.
But i was @ the Philly game around Thanksgiving…the place was bumping…it was almost as loud as the Washington playoff Can You Hear us game (i was in attendance, which turned out very unfortunate). There is also an intenseness to the game that I dont think every arena has. A majority of fans are watching, analyzing and following the game. That is why you hear roars when they are flying around, hitting everything that moves, and they are cycling and forechecking like mad men. Ranger fans know the game, and I think that is sometimes why they are not consitently loud. But overall, I have heard it this year @ MSG and on the TV, the place is loud.
Recent example again would be the third peiod of the TB game the other night. Rangers were flying, hustling and the crowd reacted.
That is my two cents
yea i was at last nights game and i sat behind a group of idiot caps fans
they would hoot and holler literally every time a cap touched the puck. it was sad. shut up and watch the game, cheer when they make a god play. when i see a good forcheck, i cheer. when i see a good shot block, i cheer. when a player gathers the puck behind his own net and waits for his team to change lines, i keep my mouth shut and wait for him to do something because im not a moron.
Could take a page out of soccer/football supporters
In soccer there are “supporter organizations” for both club and country. It’s even caught on in the US. If you’ve ever watched any games the fans are constantly chanting and cheering. It’s a lot more creative than the ever-present “Let’s go team x” stuff, too.
It’s pretty much all parodies of songs. For international teams (i.e. USA soccer) the songs are often adapted from patriotic or american-themed songs, like Yankee Doodle for example.
Basically, fans gotta get organized and to a degree, centralized. Think Fireman Ed and the NY Jets. Rangers do “okay” for having a couple options, whether it’s “Duuuuuuuuuuu(bi)” or “Stuuuuuuuu” or “Hen-rik/ry” in addition to the LGR.
But to really take it up a notch we need a place to direct people to learn the chants and some people at games to lead and initiate them. We already have enough difficulty getting a solid LGR chant going in unison.
Not a bad suggestion, but i doubt rangers fans will sing like those at red bull stadium. But i think fan chant organization is a great way to go
We could create a topic somewhere, post ideas, vote for the best ones, and then try to promote them across various rangers media (blogs, twitter – they do love their twitter, etc)
I’ve been to roughly 10 USA games in the past couple years and it’s a blast getting loud and proud behind the team. If there are creative chants to rotate through I really think they would catch on with a lot of people. I love to make noise and show the support but will admit it gets old chanting LGR 20 times a game.
On the other hand, it can seem stuffy at times with the rambunctious crowd getting priced out as others have mentioned. It does seem like WAY too many people are self-conscious of being vocal and participating.
On D or say each penalty kill let’s do a “Block that shot” chant or something lol. Make the chants situational and timely at certain points of the game.
by I.Am.Spartacus on Feb 13, 2012 11:27 PM EST up reply actions
I think if that were to materialize, Rangers fans would participate in no time. Their all about tradition, i.e. i chant potvin sucks, yet iv never seen him play. As for the “Block that shot” idea, i may try something along those lines at the next game i attend, which will be against the devils. Ill tell my friends to start it, and see if we can get the whole section going. We’ll see how it goes. It would be cool if some hear us on tv. Just a suggestion…
none of those wretched vezula's (sp?) like thye had at the World Cup!

vuvuzela (or something like that)
I actually have essentially the same thing. I got it while I was attending Northeastern, at a hockey game no less. They’re actually fairly handy for getting chants started, and fun in moderation. Unfortunately, the recent World Cup in South Africa, they have their tradition thing of playing them non-stop. People got impatient with that and stadiums here have mostly banned them, making you trash them at the gates. Boo fun police!
There is an actual technical reason for the lower-audio. It’s an older building, with traditional architecture. And some of the newer buildings are designed with the purpose of audio being directed towards the center of the ice/court. At some older venues, the sound tends to get lost. It carries up, and can get lost in the open air. I don’t know the exact method, or even how much this really contributes (we could just be a quiet group), but I do know for a fact that newer building are designed with crowd noise in mind, and the designers make sure that any sound that could normally escape upwards is always being projected towards the arean floor. Perhaps that has something to do with it.

The Acoustics in the Stadium
probably play the biggest role in what you’ve seen.
i bet fans are embarassed to get rowdy
i know every time i see homo larry get up and dance like an idiot, i die a little inside. makes me wana do anything i can to not look like him, which includes gettng a litte rowdy
You have to understand that a lot of us fans have been going to games for many, many years. We have seen it all. the season ticket holders do not turn over that much so you have basically the same fans coming year after year. when I go, I watch the game and the players to see what they are doing. I chant and clap but i’m not going to be raucous and obnoxious. I’ll leave that to the flyer fans. doesn’t mean we’re not the best fans in the world. our loyalty and love for the team make us the best.
Honestly ...
What I miss the most is Carol Alt gliding through the blue seats throughout the game … Made the $5 ticket and subway ride totally worth it.

I get the impression the acoustics aren’t great, at least, to get sound on TV.
Red Line Station and @RedArmyLine, featuring coverage of the most frustrating team in the NHL
I believe in next year.
at the Flyers game on superbowl sunday it was 100x louder in the stadium than it was when i watched it at home on TV later. The “you cant beat us” chant was loud enough that you heard nothing in the stadium except that chant, on TV it was drowned out
