New York Rangers Have Held Preliminary Discussions For Rick Nash

Photo

According to Larry Brooks of the NY Post, the Rangers have had preliminary discussions with the Columbus Blue Jackets, regarding the services of Rick Nash. Now this doesn't mean that any sort of deal is on the way to bring the winger on the Broadway, but there have been talks.

Brooks goes on to say a package of Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Kreider, and a first overall draft pick will be part of what it takes to acquire Nash. But in my opinion, that deal makes me want to walk away before talks even begin heating up. Chris Kreider has been an up and coming prospect, the type the Rangers haven't had in their organization for quite a while.

Some say that it's not enough to land Nash, but in my honest opinion, it would be overpaying. As I said before with Kreider, the kid has proven himself on both the international level, and with Boston College over the last few years. I'm still on the fence about giving up Brandon Dubinsky as well.

Brandon Dubinsky has been with the organization for quite some time, and you can tell his heart is on Broadway. Despite some scoring issues this season, Dubinsky never gives up heart, and is a workhorse. If Dubinsky goes to Columbus for Nash, I honestly think part of the Rangers identity will disappear. As it stands right now, I would not even consider accepting that deal.

What do you guys think?

I just did a fanpost about this
I’m still on the fence about giving up Brandon Dubinsky as well.

Any deal involving Nash requires Dubinsky.

I was very on the fence until i really took a good look at this team over the past few games and realized for 4.2 mil he’s not worth it as a 3rd line player, and the additions of players like hagelin, stepan, richards, the emmergence of AA have made him expendable, even more so with his contract… Dubi is by far my favorite player… I’m wearing his jersey in class right now… i’d hate to see him go, but Rick Nash softens that loss… at least for me

I’m between a rock and a hard place… and I think my gut is telling me if kreider gets it done… do it… my reason, and i know i’m going to be heavily criticized is… Nash is a known commodity while Kreider is only a prospect… yes a very very very highly touted one, but at the end of the day a prospect… thats just my take, could this bite us in the ass… yes, but as it stands Nash is an NHLer who is one of the best powerforwards in the game right now… he’s young and he’s talented possess amazing one on one skill… i think if kreider is the deal breaker you have to get it done…

He says the opposite, actually.

Brooks says that Dubi, Kreider, and a 1st is NOT ENOUGH for Columbus to give up Nash. He also calls the deal a longshot.

The Post had been told the opening asking price for the 6-4, 220-pounder who has spent his entire career with the Blue Jackets following his first overall selection in the 2002 Entry Draft is in excess of the package speculated to be Brandon Dubinsky, Boston College can’t-miss prospect Chris Kreider, and a first-round draft choice.

by BigB22 on Feb 14, 2012 3:18 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, allegedly there’s another link around (didn’t see it) that says Dubi + Kreider + Stepan/McDonagh + 1st.

Howson’s on drugs if he thinks anything close to that is happening.

Actually, I can’t remember where I read it, but I heard CBJ is intent on getting a goalie as part of a deal, and we may be overlooking LA as a more probable location for Nash.

LA and Nash makes a ton of sense. And if LA is smart, they send Jack Johnson back with Bernier (or Quick, if they so chose)

a line of Mike Richards and Nash would be a lot to handle

Kopitar centering the second line all of a sudden makes them very formidable up front

LA needs scoring like a crack-whore needs crack. How they don’t come out of this with Nash, especially with Bernier as the centerpiece….

by Caerid11 on Feb 14, 2012 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

the only thing that holds this up

is the poor performance of goalies who changed teams lately…especially since Bernier is relatively unproven to be the centerpiece of a trade that sends away the franchise cornerstone….I’d say Columbus would be Quick or bust…and that negotiation could hit quite a few snags

@btown46

by Town on Feb 14, 2012 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

Well, it wouldn’t just be Bernier, but their 1st, and either a prospect package including Forbort or possible J.Johnson (though apparently they’re not keen on trading him)

by Caerid11 on Feb 14, 2012 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

I see what you're saying

but I really think Quick would be the deal-breaker in that negotiation

@btown46

by Town on Feb 14, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

They need scoring, but they wouldn’t move Quick. He’s young, and easily a top-5 goalie in the league at this point. A good to great goalie is worth 10x a 30-goal scorer.

by Caerid11 on Feb 14, 2012 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

therein lies the problem

Nash lies somewhere in the gap between Bernier and quick

yea thats absolutely ludicrous… i would do dubi kreider and 1st though…

Honestly we have to look at the totality of the circumstances… Hank is having his best season of his career, and there is no saying he’s going to repeat this next year even though we all expect him to, but if we get nash we are legit contenders for the next 2-3 season easily… with hank in his prime, if we just sit and wait and hope for kreider, that could be 3 years down the road…

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Feb 14, 2012 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

If you take emotions out of it, AND forget about the cap implications of $7.8m.. purely looking at assets going to CBJ – Kreider may be an A+ prospect but what are the chances that he will be BETTER than Nash is? Better than 30-40 goals, big strong powerforward? Pretty slim. And as far as Dubi, if we got Carter (or Parise), for example, without moving any roster pieces – Dubi is banished to the 3rd line for the rest of his time as a Ranger. Losing sleep over a 3rd liner…

by BigB22 on Feb 14, 2012 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

If we’re ever so deep that Dubinsky’s legitimately their 7th best forward (or worse), I won’t be losing sleep. We’ll be pretty darn dominant.

I am saying if the cap wasn’t an issue, and your issue was losing Kreider and Dubi, that’s OK because the chances are that Kreider MAY someday be as good as Nash (who knows, crapshoot) but won’t likely be BETTER, and that if you pick up a real top 6 player, Dubi is slotted for the 3rd line for the rest of his life. So you should be OK with losing both for Nash.\

That said, no way in hell do I want that to happen, I wanna keep Kreider and I do not want $7.8m Nash

On a more serious note, I don’t want to trade Duby. As it said in the post, he is a critical part of this team’s identity, and has also played an important role in CREATING it.

Also, Kreider continues to impress, anybody watch the Beanpot last night? My Terriers lost again, but seeing Kreider score made it a little easier to bear

No Dubi, Krieder, and 1st.

Instead, I will offer a prospect package:
Forwards Wojtek Wolski, Mats Zuccarello, and Ryan Bourque, defensemen Jeff Woywitka and Brendan Bell, and goalie Chad Johnson.

Rangers receive Vinny Prospal as well (I miss the guy, just saying)

Wolski needs a place like Columbus to get his game back. Columbus has a lot of time on their hands and they can help him get his development back. Zuccarello can shine at the NHL level with this team of young talent. Bourque I cannot see being a Ranger. Woywitka has done well with us, and I think he can help the Blue Jackets somewhat defensively. Bell has the potential to compete at the NHL level. Johnson can get get NHL time here.

This deal is dumb, I know. But this is what I will offer. That is it! If they don’t like it, I am walking away from negotiating.

Where would he fit?

Before we even look into what is worth giving up to acquire Nash, there is one larger issue.
Rick Nash is a first line right winger. The Rangers already have their first two RW positions filled by Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik (easily the most essential forwards on the team).
You wouldn’t move Nash to left, and Gabby and Cally are ingrained on the right side. He just isn’t the right piece for this team even if he is the best player on the trade market.
We need a scoring LW who reliably puts up points on the powerplay.
Bobby Ryan or Ray Whitney are the only ones who fit the bill.
I wouldn’t give up much for Whitney due to his age, only guys who don’t fit our system (Wolski, MZA, etc)
Ryan would be worth one solid roster player (AA or Dubie), and mid-level prospect or high pick. No more than that.

I’m out here in Ohio and watch the Bluejackets on occasion…even been to see them at Nationwide. Nash is an outstanding player and would be a phenomenal addition to our club. If the deal were Dubi, kreider and a 1st. I’d take it. This is the power of depth. We can withstand that hit and still be a team for the future. Next year we’ll be drawing at the bottom of the pack and it is time for us to push for Lord Stanley. Sometimes you got to cash that check.

That said, I would definitely mourn the loss of Dubinsky. We’ve watched him grow up. He’s key to our style of play and epitomizes everything good about this club…we’d be giving up a great hockey player but he needs to put up some points.

Window of Opportunity

Agree that if we can get Nash we do it. This year the Rangers, Bruins, Canucks, Red Wings look like the top 4 but who knows who else jumps up. Bottom line is -if we can win a cup then you have to take some risks. Nash is a proven NHL star. As someone else said, we can only hope Kreider can become what Nash already is.

Richards

Stick him on a line with Richards and keep him there. That being said, I dont want to deal Kreider. I love Dubi, but he is expendable at this point to get that kind of a player. My worry is that Dubi is a heart and soul Ranger and dealing him hurts our chemistry. Right now, there isn’t a team in the league that would want to play us in the playoffs. Dealing Dubi could mess with that mojo. I’d have to pass, especially if they want Kreider and Step/McD!!!

by BeukeBOOM! on Feb 14, 2012 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

I would really worry about that as well. Changing the chemistry by taking Dubi out of our locker room and lineup would be a nail-biter. He’s so good along the boards and that’s what we’re all about.

by voice22 on Feb 14, 2012 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

No doubt about it...

Nash would make the Rangers a better team.
I have similar feelings about giving up Dubinsky. He is very much a part of this teams identity…and his performance last year was a big part of creating that identity. It would break a lot of hearts to see dubi get shipped out…but in my opinion…that’s business. Plenty of guys with grit, heart, and huge balls on this team. Not many goal scorers.
A trade like this comes along…you almost have to pull the trigger…although i am a bit more reluctant to give up kreider as many people seem to be. I would hate to see him come into the nhl next year as a dominant force for another club. Swap him out for a couple others…and its a done deal… I am okay with pretty much any other prospect being put in his place plus a current roster player like wolski, boyle (although this would also be a heartbreaker for me), rupp, fedotenko…

And long term and short term you are not losing too much. Anisimov is a waste of space, you can’t allow $4+M of cap space being tied up in a 3rd liner (Duby), for the next few years Erixon would be your #6 D (at $1.75M), and he isn’t even on the team right now, and Zucc is too small for the teams we play.

How so? Dubi jumps to 5 million for a 20 goal scorer. Agree Erixon is cost controlled but Wolsi and Zuc arent NHL players right now and never will be for the Rangers so their deals are irrelevant. And our first rounder wont be that high so really your trading Erixon and Dubi and first round crapshoot for Nash. I dont see the issue with the pieces. Obviously Nashs deal is everyones concern and I get it but the NHL isnt built for dynastys and I dont think losing Dubinksy or Erixon really cripples the future much we have other talent. You will have a 2-3 year window to win a cup. Is the goal to a cup or to just make the playoffs every year and hope to get lucky?

There’s no guaranteeing a cup, its mostly the difference between getting in and hoping to get lucky, and getting in and hoping not to get unlucky. Building a consistent contender these days is the tougher task. I’d rather be Detroit and win 2-3 over a 20 year span than be Anaheim, if that’s the general question. I think I’d rather be San Jose than Anaheim too.

San Jose has won ZERO cups. Also I think you eliminate some of the unlucky factor with 30 in net but its always there. I would rather take the shot now IF you feel this team is capable of winning it by adding Nash. Now I may be in the minority but I THINK there is going to be another lockout which means if you dont go for it now then you have to wait 2 more years. I also think its likely that you will get amnesty the owners will absolutely want it. Theres some talk that they owners want one contract per team to NOT count against the cap. Yes I would like 2-3 cups in 20 years but even that is a stretch in todays NHL. I would make the deal and go for it and this core is good enough to make the playoffs the next 3-4 years with no changes so i think the risk is minimized.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 14, 2012 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

I’m aware SJ has no cups to date, but I’m saying I’d rather be in their position than Anaheim, who sure won
a cup, and 5 years later is a bottom feeder. I’d never trade 94 for anything, but I’d certainly question what we did given the resulting 97-04 years. I don’t want the same pattern here, even if it means we don’t ever run the table.

I agree Carters production is similar but his contract is way longer than Nashs. I also think he has character concerns and adding him to a team built with alot of chemistry is not a great move IMO>

I’m not so sure I would invest in Rick Nash for six years.I think we can acquire a scoring foward for alot less without giving up Duby or Kreider. Maybe you take another look at this deal during the off season, depending how the rest of the year pans out. It just seems evertime the Rangers have made these type of moves in the past, they never really payoff the way you expect, and it becomes another huge diasappointment. I’m happy with the way the team is now.Lets ride this out and see how far it can get us, because it seems every team that we’ll face in the playoffs have some problems and are looking more and more quite beatable.

Not bad but Nash and Gaboriks numbers are almost identical while playing for bad teams. Do you think the Rangers made a mistake with Gaborik? Nash is bigger, can play big, has great hands and scores I see no downside here if we dont give up Kreider and and gives us a legitmate Cup shot which Im not sure we have now.

by jdileone9 on Feb 14, 2012 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

Gaborik is different than Nash simply because of the contracts involved and the assets given up. Gaborik was not a mistake, Nash would be, IMO.

Gaborik’s also more than a PPG player post-lockout. Over that time:
Gaborik’s got 411 points in 399 games (214 goals). Nash has 431 in 494 games (219 goals)

And, Gaborik makes $300k less, and we’re only committed for 3 more years.

If Nash were signed for 4 years at 7.8, or 8 years at $5.5m, this is a non-issue, you go get him. His contract is just horrific for what he gives you, and that’s ignoring that 33-35 y.o. Rick Nash will likely be worse.

In all honesty all these contracts are horrific. Dubinsky will make 5 million in 2 years to score 15 goals and thats way worse. A guy like Wolski whos not worth a bag of pcuks makes 4 million. I think the reality is that he is worth the risk especially if you win the cup. Plus you may get amnesty after this season when the NHL gets locked out. I would go for it now. This isnt a league now where teams have dynastys, ther will be very repeat cup winners if any going forward. I think its worth the risk.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 14, 2012 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

It’s only the cap hits that are relevant.

And there’s no guarantee of an amnesty buy out this time.

Nothing is guaranteed in life or hockey. He has 39 points this year, he would slot in as 3rd best on the team in points and arguably its best offensive player and more complete than Gaborik(IMO).His stats and Gaboriks over his career are identical. Hes a bigger physical presence. The team will need CONSISTENT scoring come playoff time. He brings all of that. Does it guarantee a cup? No but I would like our chances alot more.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 14, 2012 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sure George can answer this better than I, but my guess is no. He already generates as many shots as anybody in the league. So unless that number somehow jumps dramatically, I don’t seem him scoring substantially more.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Feb 14, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

He hasnt produced this year to his career averages which are close to gaboriks but he would add tons of scoring depth that we dont have now and would make the PP better on day one. Also i dont like to deal in Maybes but a change of scenery to a bigtime team in a bigtime city looking for a cup could do wonders.

Amnesty would just mean you took 30 games of Nash (if you buy him out, you won’t be able to bring him back) for Dubinsky + one of your top prospects (either Erixon or Kreider)

Dubi

As I said above, keep in mind that if you add any top 6 forward via trade or this summer – Carter, Nash, Parise – Dubinsky is slotted for the third line for the rest of his career. If Kreider pushes AA off the first line next season, Dubi is even deeper into the 3rd.

So keep that in mind before throwing up arms about trading Dubi now or this summer for cap space (for Parise)… even with heart and soul, he is only doing so much from the 3rd line.

by BigB22 on Feb 14, 2012 4:11 PM EST reply actions

Dubi is probably a cap casaulty if AA and Kreider grow into the players they have the potential to be. Unless Dubi jumps into 35 G, 70 pts territory, then you wouldn’t need Nash anyway.

This summer we’ll have to deal with Wolski (Assuming he’s a walk-off), Del Zotto, and Stralman as RFA’s (and maybe contracts to Prust, Mitchell, and Biron as UFA’s). No big deal. Following year its Anisimov, Stepan, Hagelin, McDonagh, and Sauer. I put them in as baseline RFA qualifying values, and this is what I got. If Cap stays the same (assuming no lockout rollback) :

FORWARDS
Marian Gaborik ($7.500m) / Brad Richards ($6.666m) / Ryan Callahan ($4.275m)
Michael Rupp ($1.500m) / Brian Boyle ($1.700m) / Brandon Dubinsky ($4.200m)
J.T. Miller ($1.275m) / Christian Thomas ($1.000m) / Chris Krieder ($1.275m)
Derek Stepan ($0.918m) / Carl Hagelin ($0.918m) / Artem Anisimov ($1.875m)

DEFENSEMEN
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Daniel Girardi ($3.325m)
Mike Sauer ($1.250m) / Ryan McDonagh ($1.300m)
Tim Erixon ($1.750m) / Anton Stralman ($0.945m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.087m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Martin Biron ($1.000m)

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $56,278,334; BONUSES: $1,475,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $8,021,666

Now, I think we can all assume all of the RFA’s will get something more than qualifying offers, I just don’t see any big names coming in (I did my cap and figured about ~$100,000 in cap space after RFA raises)

The last time ANYONE trusted Brooks...

a deal for Bobby Ryan was “imminent”.

Please.

It would take Wolski, Zuccarello, McIlrath, St. Croix, Woywitka, Stajcer and 2 1sts to get this done.

Reason?

Howson has a plan, and it needs shaping…just like Sather’s did. Howson won’t mortgage everything, just enough to lower his payroll. He can ill-afford to go full boar on rebuilding, as he will need to market as All-Star Game next season, and market his team going forward. Losing his franchise player will hurt, but the previous GM left set for a fall, whether or not Howson brought in free agents or drafted a new team like the Oilers and Isles have.

So, right now, Howson has to do several things at once: shed his dead weight, give his franchise player an honest chance to win, stockpile draft picks and players to get a chance at invigorating his fan base, and pray they don’t move away from Columbus (which would most certainly get him fired).

He’s gonna have to swallow his pride, and take a few chances. So, if he gets a Wolski instead of Dubinsky, tough. If he has to take some lesser knowns for anyone…so be it.

Sather did.

I doubt he is the only one calling the shots on this in that organization.

My bet is they know he is going to be fired and want him to take the heat on this trade before the new GM comes in. Happens all the time in business. Make the lame duck CEO make an unpopular decision and they say you fired him because of it.

If Howson was going to be fired, it would’ve been when the coaching change took place. I don’t see him losing his job here, and I also tend to think the Commissioner has his fingerprint on this somehow. Just the mere fact that a franchise player has been talked about as a player made available to trade, let’s me know Bettman is closely monitoring this sequence of events.

When was the last time a coach and GM was fired at the same time? It normally goes like this

Team is bad = fire the coach
Team is still bad = wasn’t the coach, trade some players and/or fire GM for building the team.

If Nash wants out or the organization wants to blow it up and start again I don’t think they would put that trade on a new GM. Even if Howson isnt gone right now he has to know he needs to turn it around quick. I would be very afraid of a GM who’s back is up against the wall trading my franchise player.

I am always concerned about chemistry. When a team is one point away from being the best team in the NHL, its hard to think about making changes. I know that another scorer would be great, but this team seems to be prepared to make a run as is. If things do not work out, I can see making some changes next year.

by purinton on Feb 14, 2012 5:14 PM EST reply actions

I wish somebody would explain all this chemistry crap. I get that chemistry is important and it could be fickle but really what do people think? That if Dub leaves the room everybody is going to stop playing and sit and cry in the corner?

Or do people mean on-ice chemistry? Really, how many set lines do we have that removing one player would drastically alter the team? Especially when you are talking about adding a player that in most cases has more skill then the one going the other way.

I think “chemistry” refers to the idea that the team is running at this obscene pace because it is the perfect mix of “chemicals,” i.e. players. One small deviation, and it no longer exists.

Exactly.

Sather's in quite a spot isn't he

If he makes a move, and they don’t win, he’ll be vilified for destroying the chemistry. If he stands pat, and they don’t win, he’ll be vilified for not making a move. His only out is if they win the cup.

He won't be blamed if we don't win

Most of the sane people around here agree that with our youth and depth this doesn’t HAVE the be the year to win. We have at least a 3-4 year window to work with.

by I.LikeMittens on Feb 14, 2012 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yep

And I’m sure that most of those that now want to bring in a big contract are the same people that blamed Sather in the past for doing exactly that. Funny how things change.

by M.R.M. on Feb 14, 2012 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

it’s almost like Nash/Carter are the only 2 players that will ever be available. my thought was, if after the all-star break they tailed off and lost momentum, maybe make a change. but that didn’t happen. aside from the 1-0 loss (that could also have been at least a tie), they haven’t lost in regulation and have lengthened their lead. they seem to be getting better, and now scoring more.

Let it ride. Wouldn’t u guys rather have bobby Ryan anyway? Ride it out and trade for Ryan in the off season if we suffer an early exit.
And just because u have big names don’t equal playoff goals

It didn't sound like mgmt wants to give up Krieder from recent statements...

But hey you never no. No matter what you all think of him, he is still just a prospect, and Nash is another elite player. People didnt want BR and look at us now. The talent this team has told me early on in the season we should be one of the best teams in the leauge. We Nash on this team we would be unstoppable. And I would see no reason for that to just end after this season. With Nash we could still be a serious cup contender for years to come…

by Toad McGee on Feb 14, 2012 6:10 PM EST reply actions

Wait…so according to the post in “The Cannon” (don’t let the Mythbusters fire it), “[T]he Blue Jackets have coveted [Dubinsky] for years.” Not that there isn’t a lot to covet about him — he is an amazing, amazing player when he’s on his game — but this was something I didn’t know. Is this one of those facts that is common knowledge for most fans?

AFAIK, Marty Turcos is available from the Austrian league. Hey, he can’t be worse than Mason.

We are in shape to win the presidents trophy and go deep into the playoffs and you want to take a captain off of a losing team and trade away valuable assets come on…
The guy has no heart, otherwise they wouldn’t have the worst record in the league. He is a minus 22 for crying out loud. He’s a one way Brad Richards. And I’m not even sold on the two way one we have. 7.8 million with a no movement comes with him. This teams identity is to out work teams, block shots and play great defense in front of a great goalie…don’t give me a Rick Nash ugh!!

by louielounz1 on Feb 14, 2012 6:11 PM EST via mobile reply actions

1) because Rick Nash is the one giving up a bucket load of goals per game?
2) No player should ever be judged on their plus/minus…ever
3) Rick Nash adds scoring that the Rangers don’t have, chemistry be damned

Real Ranger fans care about the W not how we got the W…see NY Giants. Also Callahan is a +1 and Nash is a -22 big difference

Something a lot of you guys seem to forget..

Either Dubi or his bad agent pushed mgmt into paying more for him than what Sather believed he was worth. The team chemistry was not important enough to him when he held out in training camp/pre-season. Torts publically did not appreciate him holding out either. I bet sather told Dubi you better deliver on your salary and now he feels burned. I would not be suprised one bit if they use him and a couple other pieces to upgrade from Dubi. Thats what it comes down to..

I posted this before and you are right.

If you sit at the negotiation table (and walk away from one) demanding a raise based on your current and future performance and don’t deliver, its on you. If you want to stay somewhere then you set yourself up to succeed which would mean over performing your current contract.

I need two examples

1. A team that gave up “can’t miss prospect” for A-list vet that then went on to glory

More importantly:
2. (Aside from Gomez/McDonagh) Team that gave up A-list vet for blue chip that turned out to be a stud.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

Make The Deal

If there is a trade, whether its for Nash or Bobby Ryan, Dubinsky would be part of either deal. So in my mind, Wolski and Zuccarello will not play with the Rangers, so offer them up. The Rangers are deep and young on the blue line, so Erixon or McIlrath would be included and offer up a #1 pick this year. I personally would love to see either one come to Broadway. They are both big and tough players that add scoring to our line up. Dubinsky is average at best offensively but is part of the heart and soul of this team, but at 4.2 mil per year, its way too much to keep him. I’d pull the trigger and come June drink out of the Cup!

Lots of angles to approach this from

First reply/post :)

I’m torn over trading Dubinsky. I’ve watched the Rangers for almost 40 years, and he’s the streakiest player I’ve ever watched. He’ll give you 10 point in 5 games, then 2 points over 15. It’s maddening! BUT… he does work hard in the corners, hits, and will drop the gloves if need be. Also, his defensive play is pretty good. Those qualities personify what the Rangers identity currently is.

To MZA/Erixon, I could let them go without losing any sleep over it. McIlrath I’d like to keep, but he has to start showing me sometihng special.

As to Kreider, right now he’s a “may be awesome”. I don’t care what scouts says, I don’t care what he’s done in college. Plenty of players have hit the NHL with big up-side only to tank, and plenty have come from obscurity to be great. Established talent > may be awesome.

I definitely don’t like Nash’s contract. That’s about all I have to say on that.

If I go with my gut, in the end I think I say stand. We’re the #1 team in the East, 9 points up, the powerplay is showing signs of life, and we’re playing great team defense (goaltending included). Don’t mess with what ain’t broken.

Thanks,
