Chris Drury
I know this is random, but I was just thinking about this team and how awesome everything has been for them this year. It really is brilliant, I was just thinking of the differences between this year and last year, when I realized that I had totally forgot about Drury, our former captain.
Some people probably think this is stupid or something, but the guy was totally classy about everything that happened in this past season. From his constant injuries and only scoring one goal last year to how he handled his buy-out/retirement last summer with the Rangers. Drury is a great guy, he was a leader with us, and one of the select few to be dawned as the captain of the New York Rangers. Honestly, I think he in a way has helped this team this season. I think from everything that Drury exemplified from courage, leadership, defensive ability, and doing the little things right has passed on to the rest of the team, not that it didn't before or that Tortorella clearly was also pushing the same brand of hockey, but I just think he's a great guy that the team learned from and also follows in his footsteps in a way.
It stinks that the ridiculous contract he had kind of blinded some people into seeing the type of player and person he was. But when you look at Ryan Callahan, I can totally see Chris Drury being somewhat of a mentor to him, maybe he was the perfect guy to have as our predecessor to Callahan. Who knows, maybe I'm just rambling about nothing, personally though, I believe Drury has left some type of footprint on this team in someway, shape, or form. And if he has, then the results couldn't be better.

the only footprint Drury left on this team is the following: $3.7M cap hit this year and $1.7M cap hit for next year. Thanks for playing. Naslund is one of a very small group of athletes that gets it, as does Rafalski. I wanted Drury here originally but I have a very bad lasting feeling about the way he departed.
You can’t blame the guy for his knee injury, it ended his career and his play style long before the rangers bought him out
then he should have retired. he already got $30m+ from the team and he should have exited gracefully like Naslund did.

And let us know the next time you screw people over to make bank for yourself in the process, and people don’t get mad.
Not even trying to criticize Dru for taking the cash, just pointing out he should recognize what the “cost” of taking the money would be. Dru said he always wanted to be a Ranger, if he walked away, the fans would remember that, instead he took his money, but he shouldn’t expect to be cheered in the Garden for that anytime soon.

Screw people over? What are you talking about? This a business. Drury wore his heart on his sleeve for this team. It’s unfortunate Sather offered him a contract that he was never going to live up to and Drury took it, just like everyone on the planet would have. His body broke down from the wear and tear from playing the way he did. He’s under no obligation to walk away from anything, you need to get over it, if you hate Chris Drury for this you’re petty.
I’m not saying Dru is wrong for taking the money, just that Dru should have understood he was going to hear the boo birds when his production wouldn’t come close to justifying it.
Even after he had taken more money then he could even dream of from the Rangers, it still wasn’t enough. His body WAS broken down from his last trip to the IR, (although even healthy as horse, he was NEVER good enough to be worth 7 mil) and the Rangers tried to talk to him about retiring for medical reasons (he would have gotten ALL his money from insurance, and would have come off our cap entirely) but he fought tooth and nail to get himself cleared. He wound up only getting 2/3’s of the cash he had coming, and sticking us with dead cap space. Again Dru has to do what’s right for him, and if he wanted the money that’s fine, but he shouldn’t expect anyone to welcome him back to MSG.

I loved Drury as a player
I loved him on the Avs, loved him as a Flame and Sabre too. But the Rangers did pretty much set him up for failure by giving him that huge contract.
Drury was a very shitty captain, because he simply wasn’t cut out for it. Callahan on the other hand, from what I’ve seen so far is a very good captain.
Drury might have had some effect on team but it’s not nearly as large as you make it out to be.

drury set himself up by taking the money
you can’t accept big money in nyc and expect a free pass when you live up to it regardless of skill level

Sure Drury knew if he didn’t perform he’d be under scrutiny, as is any player who gets a new contract. But the Rangers should have never gave him that much in the first place.

i agree
our players didnt learn this system overnight. its about doing all the little things right and even at his worst moments, thats what drury did. he was a classy guy and i believe he did have an affect on cally. thanks for posting it.
It was much more than being classy, as I wrote.

This post is extremely speculative in nature…there’s no way to tell if Drury impacted Cally’s development for good OR bad. I will say that Drury never played with the abandon and physicality of Ryan Callahan, even during his years as a productive pro.
He was an uninspiring captain to most of the Ranger fan base, and part of that was Drury’s own fault. I cannot envision Callahan under any circumstances making the famous Drury remark that a tough loss “won’t ruin the Xmas vacation” . For me and a lot of other Ranger fans, that was a nearly unforgivable remark. Add in his underachievement in relation to his salary, and you have a polarizing player who arguably was the worst Ranger captain of the last 30 seasons.

Well the difference is that one player was paid to come here, and the other was groomed to be here and feels a connection to the team.
And if your worried about underachievement in relation to salary, well than… I’d like to introduce you to Mr. Nash over here

I was posting about Drury, who was a polarizing figure as a member of the Rangers. Not Nash.
Thanks for bringing in yet another needless reference to a player who will probably never be a Ranger. I like to confine my opinions to those people who are actually members of the Rangers.

I was talking about Drury and Cally. Read my comment again.
Someone’s a little pissy today.

But yeah, I’m allowed to be worried about the Drury/Nash similarities.
You made a comment about being a polarizing figure, and I responded to why I thought he was, and gave an example so readers could follow my thoughts better.
But sure..

Yeah
I am a little pissy today, but given the way that your response to my original comment was worded I felt like you were lumping me in with the Nash-at-all-cost crew….honest mistake on my part if you were not tarring me with that brush.
peace otherwise though!

My apologies if it came across that way.
No worries.

Moshe—I usually like and respect what you have to say, but what is the problem, exactly, with calling Dru a polarizing figure? Poll this site, I bet Dru haters and appreciators run 50-50 on the issue of Drury’s tenure as Ranger captain.
Either way, as a captain, I think Dru was a waste. Again, that is just opinion. I wish things had been better for him, but the man certainly made little effort to win over the fans—and when things turned bad for him with his health he offered little to the media or fans except silence. Not exactly what a team wants from a captaining a huge market.

Sigh. Read above.
The only thing I said was that Drury was given a fuckton of money to do something and he took it. I didn’t take a side or blame anyone or anything.
man..

Amen.
When I see how Drury got treated towards the end…it makes me hope like mad that Cally will not wind up in that same boat (even if that boat is floating in Lake Erie).
Has anyone heard anything from/about Drury since his retirement?
Somewhat

Now I’m feeling incredibly bummed I’ve never had a “hot oil” pizza before.
No public appearances? No behind-the-scenese visits (that were leaked/tweeted) to his former teammates? What a bummer, going from the go-to interview guy after games, to being invisible.
One thing I will notice is…that towards the beginning of Ryan’s tenure as “A,” especially around the Olympics, Cally was a little less polished and used “I” and “me” more frequently than “we” and “us.” (It jarred a bit, when Cally and Drury were in a joint interview.) Cally is now all about “us” and “we,” so I don’t know whether this is something that Drury helped him with.

Unfortunately
The biggest goal he’s ever scored in a game with the Rangers was against us. I’ll never fucking forget that goal =(
