Plea To The New York Rangers: Do NOT Trade For A Defenseman

The New York Rangers rumors are swirling at an unprecedented pace this winter. Whether it's Jeff Carter, Rick Nash, Anson Carter, or anyone out there, the rumors are being talked about at an all time high rate.

News broke today that Pavel Kubina was being asked by the Tampa Bay Lightning for a list of teams he would like to be traded to. The Rangers were immediately part of the speculation for a possible destination for Kubina.

That brings me to my plea. The Rangers do NOT need a defenseman. At all.

The top six as it stands is fine: Ryan McDonagh, Dan Girardi, Michael Del Zotto, Anton Stralman, Marc Staal, Steve Eminger, and soon to be Michael Sauer, Pavel Valentenko, Dylan McIllrath, Tim Erixon, I cold go on and on but you get the point.

The Rangers not only do not need a defenseman, but they would have no usage for one at all. So, please, do not trade for a defenseman. I beg you Rangers!

well they will if Erixon goes in a deal for Nash which Sather might do to keep Kreider out of a potential deal. I heard Dreger saying the Rangers are co-favorites if not favorites to land Nash. doesn’t mean a deal for nash will happen but it does mean the Rangers are in the thick of it.

the Rangers think nothing of Valtank. If they did then he would have been here with the rash of injuries early in the year. instead guys like Bell and Woywitka got a chance.

Kubina has an expiring contract

And is better than Steve “Eric bana looking mofo” eminger. I fail to see how for very little he can be acquired for isnt an upgrade for the rangers. I’d give a 3rd rounder and a shitty prospect for him. I don’t get why you think getting pavel Kubina could destroy the rangers, or atleast thats what you make it sound like.

Malone is a tailor made player for this system but his cap hit kills the possibility of him coming here……think Brandon Prust with more of a scoring touch.

He’s got an expiring contract and a history with Torts. I could see this for a lower draft-pick. Eminger has been awful, Staal still isn’t right, and he could be a solid bottom-pair D for us. Especially if Sauer isn’t looking good. Last I heard he isn’t even skating.

If it looks like Sauer isn’t coming back, I’d be on board with Kubina.

Kubina is an upgrade over Eminger, without question…..and he can shoot the puck as well. Wouldn’t be a bad addition for the playoff run at all. Also Torts coached him in Tampa, and knows his game well.

15 year vet of the NHL—a solid defender and above-average player for about 6 years in the NHL, now his game has slipped a bit but he is still a much more skilled player than Eminger. He won a Cup with Torts in Tampa.

You are the third poster to mention the expiring contract….did not feel like it was necessary to mention that since so many other mentions had been made.

I think Kubina would be a good addition for a playoff run. He’s won a cup, has a big body and I think he could play a top 4 role if other guys get injured. Knowing Torts doesn’t hurt either.

seeing that sauer ETA is unknown and with only 25+ games to go I find it more likely for the rangers to add kubina who can play on the 3rd defensive pairing and some powerplay time as well… even at his age he still has a cannon.

Staal was out for a lot longer, and since Sauer already played this season it shouldn’t be as bad. Every concussion is different.

That’s the whole point. Eminger is shaky, Sauer isn’t even skating, and Staal is still not right. Get a cheap D guy to solidify what we have. Ultimately, I think we all want G/McD Staal/Sauer MDZ/Strawman, but it might not turn out that way. Kubina could easily play next to Staal, just need to start reigning Staal in because his pinches and rushes up the ice have been fucking AWFUL.

trade for defenseman

Do not disagree with premise of analysis although do not believe that Steve Eminger has been contributing to the overall defensive excellence of the Rangers. Just watching the last few weeks of needless penalties, repeated giveaways and consistent trouble moving puck out of own end has been rather obvious. Also agree with previous posts of expiring contract, better than average shot and previous familiarity with coach for Kubina. All trades at deadline depend on additional issues as locker room presence/team attitude, etc. and with a team as confident and playing as well as they against weighing depth for injuries and the season long haul vs. sticking with the long range plan, cap space, contracts etc. Let me finish with have we forgotten what we looked like in the playoffs last year without Callahan. So basically agree if depth is needed anywhere it is to an offense that can use an added boost as well as prepare for possible injury.

by oldiegoalie on Feb 16, 2012 12:03 PM EST reply actions

Agreed!!!

I totally agree with this post! Why would the Rangers need another defenseman? Honestly its been a tight group from the get go and team chemistry is at a all time high! Lets not go back to the old Ranger way of trading youth for a slumping super star that may or may not help the overall team! If a trade is made in the next couple of weeks I hope Sather is looking at the Hartford Whale for players to get rid of!!! Kubina aint worth the loose change in my pocket which is about .45 cents….. Either is Nash for the price they are asking!!! LOL -22 says alot about being a team player!!!

by suddendeath on Feb 16, 2012 12:30 PM EST reply actions

To me this is the equivalnce of ’ Sather please trade for Nash’ post.

I cant understand how anyone is comfortable going into the playoffs with Eminger/Woy/Bickle playing prominent roles.

5 of our 7 defensemen have a COMBINED total of 15 playoffs games played. That is total for all of the 5 combined. I don’t even know if it can be found but I am very confident no team has won the cup with such an inexperienced group. And even if there was I doubt they would be on the same skill level of those three.

No clue where you are getting Sauer coming back, nothing we have seen even says he is working out. Even if he started working out now, which he isnt, it would be weeks before he would be back with only a month left to get back in game shape. And even if that did happens, which I seriously doubt at this point you are 1 injury away from being back in the same problem.

Out of all the moves to help this team in the post season, a defensmen makes the most sense and the most need.

I disagree

You can never have too much defensive depth. We’ve been rotating the ultimate scrub squad in the 6th d-spot all year with Eminger, Woywitka, and Bickel. There’s no telling when Sauer will be back, or if he will be back at all this year. Staal could take a head shot at any time and be out like Crosby. Girardi and McD block tons of shots and they could catch one in a bad spot.

Point is, if it comes down to game 7 in a playoff series, I’d rather be able to rely on a grisly vet with playoff experience than one of our revolving door extra defensemen.

by Guess Who's Back? on Feb 16, 2012 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

But they're in a playoff position

You know the guys in Phoenix aren’t like “come on boys, lets get into the playoffs so we get knocked out of the 1st round”, when you’re in the playoffs, you just gotta believe and take it game by game. Don’t sleep on any team in the playoffs, it’s a whole new season, anything can happen. Remember Montreal a few years ago? Also the Flyers in that same year? Oilers in the year after the lockout? Any team has a chance if they’re in.

Plus, the guys in Phoenix wanna stay there, making a playoff push helps their cause.

so wouldn’t you rather have eminger as the 7th guy? look at this team.. blocking shots is our MO… having depth is a plus and its not just about the final d-man spot… he’ll shoot the damn puck on the powerplay and damn he can still fire it.

by jdileone9 on Feb 16, 2012 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

As long as the price isn’t too cheap I’m absolutely in favor of this. He can help the PP, and solidify that 6 spot.

If Sauer can’t come back, Kubina takes his spot. If he can come back, than Kubina is taking Stralman’s spot. Not sure how much of an upgrade that it,

but the depth is absolutely worth it, as long as we don’t have to give up much.

Here’s my thing. If Sauer can’t come back…

Kubina replaces Eminger. There’s a gap there.

And if there’s another injury, Kubina replaces Bickel. There’s an even bigger gap there.

As long as it’s cheap, I’m game.

No reason not to do it if it’s cheap enough. Depth can never be overrated, and with Sauer not even skating, can’t guarantee he’ll be back and in full-game functionality for the playoffs.

If Sauer isn't even skating right now

he’s not likely to come back soon….there’s about 8 weeks left in the season. If he comes back with 5-10 games left, how good do you think he’ll be? I don’t think Staal has been terrible, but he hasn’t been Staal-like either.
I agree with you, I like the deal if it doesn’t cost too much. Just don’t put too many eggs in that Sauer-coming-back basket.

Thinking the same exact way

I don’t mind getting a defensemen over the trade deadline, but only if we don’t have to give up good pieces and also as long as the contract doesn’t screw us over in a year or 2.

Which bring me to a completely off topic question

Shouldn’t we be training a successor to Lundqvist? Should Biron be resigned ? Should we be giving some younger kid some time next season or something to get his feet wet. Hows that work?

lundqvist is only turning 30 i think he has at least 3-5 good years left. he said he wants to retire a ranger. as far as biron goes id re-sign him for another year or two. i wouldnt stress too much about finding a successor now.

by Guess Who's Back? on Feb 16, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

he’s gonna be 30 next month and let me clarify by what i said… 3-5 more vezina candidate years… beyond that who knows… you’re talking 35+

yeah 8-10 years would be amazing but if they ever revert to him playing 70+ games again you can kiss that wish goodbye.

by jdileone9 on Feb 17, 2012 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

In the next few years I’m sure Gordie Clark will have us pick up a project-type of goalie (probably a late-round guy like Lundqvist was) and start working him through the ranks. Goalies with a lot of development time usually pan out better than guys thrown to the wolves.

McD>Weber for me at this point. Money-wise, McD will get a raise after next year, but it still won’t be Weber money (which will most likely be 7m+). If anything, Staal would go in a deal like that because McD is younger, cost-controlled, and has the potential to be something special. Moving Staal or Girardi would be better money-wise, but I’d rather stay out of the D market (it’s going to be insane).

I wouldn’t say no where near the skater – I’m a huge Leetch fan, but McD has some wheels. It’ll be tough to make the comparison given the completely different styles the team played while each was playing. Leetch was given all the freedom he wanted to join the rush while McD is reined in a bit. I will say that Leetch was one of the best PP QBs ever so McD has a long way to go there.

It Will Be Sooooooo Nice, at Some Point Today . . .

. . . to banter about the game tonight, how interesting the matchup is — because of how desperate the Black Hawks are, how dangerous they can still be, how they give up waaaaay too many goals but can outscore anyone on a given night, and how with that possibility Torts is going with Biron.

Oh and, lest I forget, it’ll be nice to marvel how gorgeous those Chicago unis are.

by cmont on Feb 16, 2012 4:18 PM EST reply actions

Look, Biron is going to get starts, and with all the good teams we’re playing, he’s going to get one of them. Henrik’s having by and far his best season, and one of it not the BEST season of any goal-tender this year. You can attribute it to many things, but a healthy Biron getting starts to give Henrik extra rest is definitely one of them.

I don’t even give a shit if Biron loses a game here and there, because it’ll mean that Henrik will be rested enough to win the next 6-7.

I Don't Disagree, Cae

But next game is Sunday vs. CBJ. If Hank were to play tonight, and Marty on Sunday, 30 could have four days off before PIT on Tuesday.

by cmont on Feb 16, 2012 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

Eh, that’s the breaks. This team isn’t desperate for points right now, so it’s not like we need to start Hank tonight. Let him have an easy game against CBJ (could even give Biron another start), he’s earned it.

Can also think of it this way: if Biron gets lit up by the Hawks, it means we can resign him even cheaper in the off-season :-)

Hart

I was watching the Pens game last night…and they’re trumpeting Malkin for the Hart (as they do in every game…and rightly so), but the conversation turned to Lundqvist and his name as a Hart. And I’m not sure if I heard dumber arguments come from announcers….“he’s a goalie they shouldn’t be eligible, Fleury and Howard have more wins, Marty Biron’s had a great year.” There are arguments against Hank as the Hart winner…and they managed to pick the most incoherent arguments out there.

I agree

No need for a defenseman. We have 5 top 4 defenseman in Staal, Danny g, McD, MDZ, and Sauer. Add woywitka, Bickel or eminger and were good. We also have 7 top 6 forwards (Cally, Gabby, Richie, Stepan, Anisimov, Hagelin, and Dubinsky) so i don’t see the imaginary need to add that top 6 forward either.

Looking at this from wrong POV

For the NYR the problem is not going with Bickely Wookie and Stralman as bottom pairings but rather knowing that the NYR can’t keep playing Girardi/McDonagh 27-29 minutes a game.

Not to mention this shot blocking addiction Girardi has playing with fire as you can’t keep blocking shot and not eventually pay the price with a broken bone.

Erixon is discovering the NHL is way harder than Modo Sweden which kicked him in the old confidence hard. Valentenko needs rocket engines on his skates to keep up.

If the NYR can get someone who can eat minutes then they have to explore it.

Sather aint getting any younger....

Just some food for thought. Glen sather isnt getting younger and his window for winning a cup may be different than the fans. If he sees a chance to put players on this team that will win him a cup he may well pull the trigger. This year the Rangers are very cose, maybe even talented enough to take it all. That said I wouldnt be surprised to see Slats make a big move. However- it may well be one that no one sees coming as his style.

Typing in all caps very much takes away from your credibility, and there are probably 8 other teams with the “if it aint broke” mentality. There aren’t going to be 8 cup champions. By all means, cry your head off now about how good we are and then cry like a gay boy in the offseason when we go out in round 1 to the caps in the 1/8 matchup because we couldn’t score any goals.
